THE EPISTLES OF PAUL · Day 11 of 21
2 Thessalonians — The Day of the Lord
1 · READ THE TEXT
2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 & 3:6-13
2 Thessalonians 2:1-12
Open in the reader →1Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, 2That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 5Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? 6And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. 7For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 8And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
2 Thessalonians 3:6-13
Open in the reader →6Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. 7For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you; 8Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you: 9Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us. 10For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. 12Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. 13But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.
2 · UNDERSTAND
The second letter corrects a distortion: someone was claiming, in Paul's name, that the Day of the Lord had already come — and some people quit working to wait. He dismantles the rumour and gives the most down-to-earth rule in the New Testament: "the one who is unwilling to work shall not eat", speaking of those who chose idleness, not of those who cannot find work. This is floor-level spirituality: waiting for the end of the world excuses nobody from paying bills and caring for dependants. Real faith does not disorganise life, it orders it.
3 · REFLECT AND ANSWER
Read the text again and answer calmly. Your answers are kept only in this browser.
- 1.What does this text reveal about who God is?
- 2.What does it show about people — and about you?
- 3.What will you do differently today because of it?
4 · LIVE AND PRAY
Practical application
Fulfil today a concrete obligation you have been spiritualising in order to postpone. Work done well is obedience too.
Lesson prayer
Lord, may the hope of your Day make me more responsible, not less. Bless my work today. Amen.
