THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON · Day 11 of 14
Humility of the Wise
1 · READ THE TEXT
Proverbs 11:2 & 26:12 & Philippians 2:3-8
Proverbs 11:2
Open in the reader →2When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
Proverbs 26:12
Open in the reader →12Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
Philippians 2:3-8
Open in the reader →3Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
2 · UNDERSTAND
"When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom." Proverbs even says there is more hope for a fool than for "a man wise in his own eyes" — because the fool can still learn, and the presumptuous cannot. Paul pushes this to the limit in Philippians: the model of humility is Christ himself, who being God did not cling to that right but emptied himself. Biblical humility is not thinking little of yourself; it is being available, not needing to be right in public, being able to say "I was wrong" without collapsing.
