THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON · Day 6 of 14
The Fear of the Lord
1 · READ THE TEXT
Proverbs 9:10-12 & Psalm 111:10
Proverbs 9:10-12
Open in the reader →10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. 11For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. 12If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
Psalms 111:10
Open in the reader →10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
2 · UNDERSTAND
"Fear of the Lord" (yirat YHWH) is the most misunderstood expression in wisdom literature. It is not terror of a God who punishes for pleasure, and it is not merely "respect", a word far too weak. It is the awe of someone who knows before Whom they stand: a reverence that reorders the priorities of an entire life. That is why it is called the "beginning" — not an early stage you outgrow, but the foundation everything else is built on. Whoever loses that reference becomes clever, not wise: they learn to manipulate reality without knowing where they are going.
3 · REFLECT AND ANSWER
Read the text again and answer calmly. Your answers are kept only in this browser.
- 1.What does this text reveal about who God is?
- 2.What does it show about people — and about you?
- 3.What will you do differently today because of it?
4 · LIVE AND PRAY
Practical application
Before opening your phone tomorrow morning, spend two minutes in silence acknowledging before whom you live. Let that awareness decide the first thing you do.
Lesson prayer
Holy is your name, Lord. Teach me the reverence that does not paralyse but orders; may I fear you in such a way that I need fear nothing else. Amen.
