THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON · Day 2 of 14
Proverbs for Life
1 · READ THE TEXT
Proverbs 1:1-7 & 4:20-27
Proverbs 1:1-7
Open in the reader →1The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; 2To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; 3To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; 4To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. 5A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: 6To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. 7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 4:20-27
Open in the reader →20My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. 21Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. 22For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. 23Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. 24Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. 25Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. 26Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. 27Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
2 · UNDERSTAND
Proverbs presents itself as a training manual: it exists "to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young". Verse 7 is the key to the whole book: "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge". Note that a proverb is not an absolute promise, it is observed wisdom — it describes the path that usually works, not a magic formula. Chapter 4 shows that wisdom is kept in the whole body: the guarded heart, the corrected mouth, the eyes looking ahead, the feet choosing the path. Nobody becomes wise by accident.

Lesson prayer
Father, teach me to guard my heart, for out of it flow the springs of life. Correct in me what I no longer even notice is crooked. Amen.
