THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON · Day 3 of 14
Ecclesiastes and the Meaning of Life
1 · READ THE TEXT
Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 & 3:1-14
Ecclesiastes 1:1-11
Open in the reader →1The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 2Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. 3What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? 4One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. 5The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. 6The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. 7All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. 8All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. 9The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. 10Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. 11There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-14
Open in the reader →1To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. 9What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? 10I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. 11He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. 12I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. 13And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God. 14I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
2 · UNDERSTAND
"Hevel havelim" — usually translated "vanity of vanities" — literally means breath, vapour, smoke the hand cannot hold. The Preacher is not a pessimist: he is honest. He looks at work, pleasure, knowledge and money and concludes that none of them, on its own, can hold a life up. Yet the same book that says everything is breath commands us to eat our bread with joy, to enjoy the work of our hands and to recognise that there is a time for everything under heaven. The lesson is not to quit the world; it is to stop demanding from the world a weight it cannot carry.

4 · LIVE AND PRAY
Practical application
Identify one thing you expect too much meaning from (a job title, a result, someone's approval). Today, do it well — and hand the outcome to God without demanding from it what it cannot give.
Lesson prayer
Eternal God, you set eternity in the human heart. Free me from chasing wind and teach me to receive today as your gift. Amen.
