1 Macabeus 12

1Quando Jônatas viu que o tempo lhe era favorável, escolheu alguns homens e os enviou a Roma, para confirmar e renovar a amizade que tinham com eles.

1Now when Jonathan saw that time served him, he chose certain men, and sent them to Rome, for to confirm and renew the friendship that they had with them.

2Enviou também cartas aos lacedemônios e a outros lugares, com o mesmo propósito.

2He sent letters also to the Lacedemonians, and to other places, for the same purpose.

3Foram, pois, a Roma, e entraram no senado, e disseram: Jônatas, o sumo sacerdote, e o povo dos judeus nos enviaram a vós, para que renoveis com eles a amizade e a aliança que tínheis, como no tempo passado.

3So they went unto Rome, and entered into the senate, and said, Jonathan the high priest, and the people of the Jews, sent us unto you, to the end ye should renew the friendship, which ye had with them, and league, as in former time.

4Então os romanos lhes deram cartas para os governadores de cada lugar, para que os conduzissem em paz à terra da Judeia.

4Upon this the Romans gave them letters unto the governors of every place that they should bring them into the land of Judea peaceably.

5E esta é a cópia das cartas que Jônatas escreveu aos lacedemônios:

5And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Lacedemonians:

6Jônatas, o sumo sacerdote, e os anciãos da nação, e os sacerdotes, e os demais judeus, aos lacedemônios, seus irmãos, saudação.

6Jonathan the high priest, and the elders of the nation, and the priests, and the other of the Jews, unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting:

7Em tempos passados foram enviadas cartas ao sumo sacerdote Onias da parte de Ario, que então reinava entre vós, para significar que sois nossos irmãos, como mostra a cópia abaixo transcrita.

7There were letters sent in times past unto Onias the high priest from Darius, who reigned then among you, to signify that ye are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify.

8Naquele tempo Onias recebeu com honra o embaixador que foi enviado, e recebeu as cartas, nas quais se fazia declaração da aliança e da amizade.

8At which time Onias entreated the ambassador that was sent honourably, and received the letters, wherein declaration was made of the league and friendship.

9Por isso também nós, ainda que não necessitemos de nenhuma destas coisas, tendo nas mãos os livros santos para nos consolar,

9Therefore we also, albeit we need none of these things, that we have the holy books of scripture in our hands to comfort us,

10procuramos, contudo, enviar-vos mensageiros para renovar a fraternidade e a amizade, para que não nos tornemos de todo estranhos para vós; pois já passou muito tempo desde que nos enviastes mensageiros.

10Have nevertheless attempted to send unto you for the renewing of brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers unto you altogether: for there is a long time passed since ye sent unto us.

11Nós, pois, em todo tempo, sem cessar, tanto nas nossas festas como nos outros dias convenientes, nos lembramos de vós nos sacrifícios que oferecemos e nas nossas orações, como é justo e como convém lembrar-se dos irmãos;

11We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our feasts, and other convenient days, do remember you in the sacrifices which we offer, and in our prayers, as reason is, and as it becometh us to think upon our brethren:

12e alegramo-nos muito com a vossa glória.

12And we are right glad of your honour.

13Quanto a nós, tivemos grandes angústias e guerras por todos os lados, porque os reis que estão em redor de nós pelejaram contra nós.

13As for ourselves, we have had great troubles and wars on every side, forsomuch as the kings that are round about us have fought against us.

14Contudo, não quisemos ser pesados a vós, nem aos outros nossos aliados e amigos, nestas guerras;

14Howbeit we would not be troublesome unto you, nor to others of our confederates and friends, in these wars:

15pois temos o socorro do céu que nos ajuda, de modo que somos livrados dos nossos inimigos, e os nossos inimigos são humilhados.

15For we have help from heaven that succoureth us, so as we are delivered from our enemies, and our enemies are brought under foot.

16Por esta causa escolhemos Numênio, filho de Antíoco, e Antípatro, filho de Jasão, e os enviamos aos romanos, para renovar a amizade que tínhamos com eles e a aliança anterior.

16For this cause we chose Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater the son of Jason, and sent them unto the Romans, to renew the amity that we had with them, and the former league.

17Ordenamos-lhes também que fossem a vós, e vos saudassem, e vos entregassem as nossas cartas acerca da renovação da nossa fraternidade.

17We commanded them also to go unto you, and to salute and to deliver you our letters concerning the renewing of our brotherhood.

18Agora, pois, fareis bem em nos dar resposta a isto.

18Wherefore now ye shall do well to give us an answer thereto.

19E esta é a cópia das cartas que Ario enviou a Onias:

19And this is the copy of the letters which Oniares sent.

20Ario, rei dos lacedemônios, a Onias, o sumo sacerdote, saudação.

20Areus king of the Lacedemonians to Onias the high priest, greeting:

21Acha-se escrito que os lacedemônios e os judeus são irmãos, e que são da linhagem de Abraão.

21It is found in writing, that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham:

22Agora, pois, visto que isto chegou ao nosso conhecimento, fareis bem em nos escrever sobre a vossa prosperidade.

22Now therefore, since this is come to our knowledge, ye shall do well to write unto us of your prosperity.

23Nós vos escrevemos em resposta que o vosso gado e os vossos bens são nossos, e os nossos são vossos. Por isso ordenamos aos nossos embaixadores que vos façam relatório disto desta maneira.

23We do write back again to you, that your cattle and goods are ours, and ours are yours. We do command therefore our ambassadors to make report unto you on this wise.

24Quando Jônatas ouviu que os príncipes de Demétrio tinham vindo pelejar contra ele com um exército maior do que antes,

24Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius’ princes were come to fight against him with a greater host than afore,

25partiu de Jerusalém e foi ao encontro deles na terra de Hamate; pois não lhes deu tempo para entrar na sua terra.

25He removed from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amathis: for he gave them no respite to enter his country.

26Enviou também espias às suas tendas, os quais voltaram e lhe contaram que estavam determinados a atacá-los de noite.

26He sent spies also unto their tents, who came again, and told him that they were appointed to come upon them in the night season.

27Por isso, logo que o sol se pôs, Jônatas ordenou aos seus homens que vigiassem e estivessem armados, para que toda a noite estivessem prontos para pelejar; também pôs sentinelas em redor do exército.

27Wherefore so soon as the sun was down, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms, that all the night long they might be ready to fight: also he sent forth centinels round about the host.

28Mas, quando os adversários ouviram que Jônatas e os seus homens estavam prontos para a batalha, tiveram medo e tremeram nos seus corações, e acenderam fogueiras no seu acampamento.

28But when the adversaries heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, they feared, and trembled in their hearts, and they kindled fires in their camp.

29Contudo, Jônatas e os seus não o souberam até a manhã; pois viam as luzes a arder.

29Howbeit Jonathan and his company knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning.

30Então Jônatas os perseguiu, mas não os alcançou; pois tinham passado o rio Eleutero.

30Then Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they were gone over the river Eleutherus.

31Por isso Jônatas se voltou contra os árabes, chamados zabadeus, e os feriu e tomou os seus despojos.

31Wherefore Jonathan turned to the Arabians, who were called Zabadeans, and smote them, and took their spoils.

32E, partindo dali, veio a Damasco e assim atravessou toda a terra.

32And removing thence, he came to Damascus, and so passed through all the country,

33Também Simão saiu e atravessou a terra até Ascalom e as fortalezas vizinhas, de onde se desviou para Jope e a tomou.

33Simon also went forth, and passed through the country unto Ascalon, and the holds there adjoining, from whence he turned aside to Joppa, and won it.

34Pois ouvira que queriam entregar a fortaleza aos partidários de Demétrio; por isso pôs ali uma guarnição para a guardar.

34For he had heard that they would deliver the hold unto them that took Demetrius’ part; wherefore he set a garrison there to keep it.

35Depois disto Jônatas voltou para casa e, convocando os anciãos do povo, deliberou com eles sobre a construção de fortalezas na Judeia,

35After this came Jonathan home again, and calling the elders of the people together, he consulted with them about building strong holds in Judea,

36e sobre elevar os muros de Jerusalém e levantar um grande terrapleno entre a cidadela e a cidade, para a separar da cidade, a fim de que ficasse isolada e não pudessem nela nem vender nem comprar.

36And making the walls of Jerusalem higher, and raising a great mount between the tower and the city, for to separate it from the city, that so it might be alone, that men might neither sell nor buy in it.

37Com isto se reuniram para reedificar a cidade, pois parte do muro, junto à torrente, do lado do oriente, tinha caído; e repararam o que se chamava Cafenata.

37Upon this they came together to build up the city, forasmuch as part of the wall toward the brook on the east side was fallen down, and they repaired that which was called Caphenatha.

38Também Simão reconstruiu Adida, na Sefelá, e a fortificou com portas e ferrolhos.

38Simon also set up Adida in Sephela, and made it strong with gates and bars.

39Ora, Trifão procurava apoderar-se do reino da Ásia e matar o rei Antíoco, para pôr a coroa na sua própria cabeça.

39Now Tryphon went about to get the kingdom of Asia, and to kill Antiochus the king, that he might set the crown upon his own head.

40Contudo, temia que Jônatas não o permitisse e que pelejasse contra ele; por isso procurava um meio de prender Jônatas para o matar. Assim partiu e veio a Betsã.

40Howbeit he was afraid that Jonathan would not suffer him, and that he would fight against him; wherefore he sought a way how to take Jonathan, that he might kill him. So he removed, and came to Bethsan.

41Então Jônatas saiu ao seu encontro com quarenta mil homens escolhidos para a batalha, e veio a Betsã.

41Then Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for the battle, and came to Bethsan.

42Quando Trifão viu que Jônatas vinha com tão grande força, não ousou estender a mão contra ele;

42Now when Tryphon saw Jonathan came with so great a force, he durst not stretch his hand against him;

43mas o recebeu com honra, e o recomendou a todos os seus amigos, e lhe deu presentes, e ordenou aos seus homens de guerra que lhe obedecessem como a ele mesmo.

43But received him honourably, and commended him unto all his friends, and gave him gifts, and commanded his men of war to be as obedient unto him, as to himself.

44Também disse a Jônatas: Por que deste a todo este povo tão grande trabalho, não havendo guerra entre nós?

44Unto Jonathan also he said, Why hast thou brought all this people to so great trouble, seeing there is no war betwixt us?

45Manda-os, pois, agora para casa, e escolhe alguns poucos homens que te acompanhem, e vem comigo a Ptolemaida, porque ta darei, e também as demais fortalezas e tropas, e todos os que têm algum cargo; quanto a mim, voltarei e partirei; pois é esta a causa da minha vinda.

45Therefore send them now home again, and choose a few men to wait on thee, and come thou with me to Ptolemais, for I will give it thee, and the rest of the strong holds and forces, and all that have any charge: as for me, I will return and depart: for this is the cause of my coming.

46Assim Jônatas, crendo nele, fez como ele lhe disse, e despediu o seu exército, que foi para a terra da Judeia.

46So Jonathan believing him did as he bade him, and sent away his host, who went into the land of Judea.

47E reteve consigo somente três mil homens, dos quais enviou dois mil para a Galileia, e mil foram com ele.

47And with himself he retained but three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him.

48Mas, logo que Jônatas entrou em Ptolemaida, os de Ptolemaida fecharam as portas e o prenderam, e mataram à espada todos os que tinham vindo com ele.

48Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates and took him, and all them that came with him they slew with the sword.

49Então Trifão enviou um exército de infantaria e cavalaria para a Galileia e para a grande planície, para destruir toda a companhia de Jônatas.

49Then sent Tryphon an host of footmen and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain, to destroy all Jonathan’s company.

50Mas, quando souberam que Jônatas e os que estavam com ele tinham sido presos e mortos, animaram-se uns aos outros e marcharam em formação cerrada, prontos para pelejar.

50But when they knew that Jonathan and they that were with him were taken and slain, they encouraged one another; and went close together, prepared to fight.

51Os que os perseguiam, pois, percebendo que estavam prontos a pelejar pelas suas vidas, voltaram atrás.

51They therefore that followed upon them, perceiving that they were ready to fight for their lives, turned back again.

52Por isso todos chegaram em paz à terra da Judeia, e ali choraram Jônatas e os que estavam com ele, e tiveram muito medo; por isso todo Israel fez grande lamentação.

52Whereupon they all came into the land of Judea peaceably, and there they bewailed Jonathan, and them that were with him, and they were sore afraid; wherefore all Israel made great lamentation.

53Então todos os gentios que estavam em redor deles procuraram destruí-los; pois diziam: Não têm chefe nem quem os ajude; agora, pois, façamos-lhes guerra e apaguemos a sua memória dentre os homens.

53Then all the heathen that were round about them sought to destroy them: for said they, They have no captain, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away their memorial from among men.
