1 Macabeus 2

1Naqueles dias levantou-se Matatias, filho de João, filho de Simeão, sacerdote dos filhos de Joiaribe, de Jerusalém, e habitou em Modin.

1In those days arose Mattathias the son of John, the son of Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, from Jerusalem, and dwelt in Modin.

2E tinha cinco filhos: Joanã, chamado Gadi;

2And he had five sons, Joannan, called Caddis:

3Simão, chamado Tassi;

3Simon; called Thassi:

4Judas, que se chamava Macabeu;

4Judas, who was called Maccabeus:

5Eleazar, chamado Avarã; e Jônatas, de sobrenome Afus.

5Eleazar, called Avaran: and Jonathan, whose surname was Apphus.

6E, quando viu as blasfêmias que se cometiam em Judá e em Jerusalém,

6And when he saw the blasphemies that were committed in Juda and Jerusalem,

7disse: Ai de mim! Por que nasci para ver esta desgraça do meu povo e da cidade santa, e para habitar ali, quando foi entregue na mão do inimigo, e o santuário na mão dos estrangeiros?

7He said, Woe is me! wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people, and of the holy city, and to dwell there, when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy, and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers?

8O seu templo tornou-se como um homem sem glória.

8Her temple is become as a man without glory.

9Os seus vasos gloriosos foram levados ao cativeiro, as suas crianças foram mortas nas ruas, os seus jovens pela espada do inimigo.

9Her glorious vessels are carried away into captivity, her infants are slain in the streets, her young men with the sword of the enemy.

10Que nação não teve parte no seu reino e não tomou dos seus despojos?

10What nation hath not had a part in her kingdom and gotten of her spoils?

11Todos os seus ornamentos lhe foram tirados; de livre que era, tornou-se escrava.

11All her ornaments are taken away; of a free woman she is become a bondslave.

12E eis que o nosso santuário, a nossa formosura e a nossa glória, foi devastado, e os gentios o profanaram.

12And, behold, our sanctuary, even our beauty and our glory, is laid waste, and the Gentiles have profaned it.

13Para que, pois, havemos de viver ainda?

13To what end therefore shall we live any longer?

14Então Matatias e os seus filhos rasgaram as vestes, e vestiram-se de saco, e choraram amargamente.

14Then Mattathias and his sons rent their clothes, and put on sackcloth, and mourned very sore.

15Entretanto, os oficiais do rei, que obrigavam o povo à apostasia, vieram à cidade de Modin para os fazer sacrificar.

15In the mean while the king’s officers, such as compelled the people to revolt, came into the city Modin, to make them sacrifice.

16E, quando muitos de Israel vieram a eles, também Matatias e os seus filhos se reuniram.

16And when many of Israel came unto them, Mattathias also and his sons came together.

17Então os oficiais do rei responderam e disseram a Matatias desta maneira: Tu és chefe, e homem honrado e grande nesta cidade, e apoiado por filhos e irmãos.

17Then answered the king’s officers, and said to Mattathias on this wise, Thou art a ruler, and an honourable and great man in this city, and strengthened with sons and brethren:

18Agora, pois, aproxima-te primeiro e cumpre a ordem do rei, como fizeram todos os gentios, e também os homens de Judá e os que ficaram em Jerusalém; assim tu e a tua casa sereis do número dos amigos do rei, e tu e os teus filhos sereis honrados com prata e ouro e muitas recompensas.

18Now therefore come thou first, and fulfil the king’s commandment, like as all the heathen have done, yea, and the men of Juda also, and such as remain at Jerusalem: so shalt thou and thy house be in the number of the king’s friends, and thou and thy children shall be honoured with silver and gold, and many rewards.

19Então Matatias respondeu e falou em alta voz: Ainda que todas as nações que estão sob o domínio do rei lhe obedeçam, e cada uma se aparte da religião de seus pais, e consinta nas suas ordens,

19Then Mattathias answered and spake with a loud voice, Though all the nations that are under the king’s dominion obey him, and fall away every one from the religion of their fathers, and give consent to his commandments:

20eu, e os meus filhos, e os meus irmãos andaremos na aliança de nossos pais.

20Yet will I and my sons and my brethren walk in the covenant of our fathers.

21Deus nos livre de abandonarmos a lei e as ordenanças.

21God forbid that we should forsake the law and the ordinances.

22Não obedeceremos às palavras do rei, para nos desviarmos da nossa religião, nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.

22We will not hearken to the king’s words, to go from our religion, either on the right hand, or the left.

23Quando acabou de dizer estas palavras, veio um dos judeus, à vista de todos, para sacrificar sobre o altar que estava em Modin, segundo a ordem do rei.

23Now when he had left speaking these words, there came one of the Jews in the sight of all to sacrifice on the altar which was at Modin, according to the king’s commandment.

24Vendo isto, Matatias inflamou-se de zelo, e os seus rins estremeceram, e não pôde conter a sua ira, segundo o juízo; por isso correu e o matou sobre o altar.

24Which thing when Mattathias saw, he was inflamed with zeal, and his reins trembled, neither could he forbear to shew his anger according to judgment: wherefore he ran, and slew him upon the altar.

25Matou também, naquele momento, o comissário do rei, que obrigava os homens a sacrificar, e derrubou o altar.

25Also the king’s commissioner, who compelled men to sacrifice, he killed at that time, and the altar he pulled down.

26Assim procedeu com zelo pela lei de Deus, como fizera Fineias a Zinri, filho de Salu.

26Thus dealt he zealously for the law of God like as Phinees did unto Zambri the son of Salom.

27E Matatias clamou em alta voz por toda a cidade, dizendo: Todo aquele que tem zelo pela lei e guarda a aliança, siga-me.

27And Mattathias cried throughout the city with a loud voice, saying, Whosoever is zealous of the law, and maintaineth the covenant, let him follow me.

28Assim ele e os seus filhos fugiram para os montes e deixaram tudo o que tinham na cidade.

28So he and his sons fled into the mountains, and left all that ever they had in the city.

29Então muitos que buscavam a justiça e o direito desceram ao deserto para habitar ali;

29Then many that sought after justice and judgment went down into the wilderness, to dwell there:

30eles, e os seus filhos, e as suas mulheres, e o seu gado; porque as aflições aumentaram muito sobre eles.

30Both they, and their children, and their wives; and their cattle; because afflictions increased sore upon them.

31Quando se contou aos servos do rei e ao exército que estava em Jerusalém, na cidade de Davi, que alguns homens que tinham transgredido a ordem do rei haviam descido aos esconderijos do deserto,

31Now when it was told the king’s servants, and the host that was at Jerusalem, in the city of David, that certain men, who had broken the king’s commandment, were gone down into the secret places in the wilderness,

32perseguiram-nos com grande número; e, tendo-os alcançado, acamparam contra eles e lhes fizeram guerra no dia de sábado.

32They pursued after them a great number, and having overtaken them, they camped against them, and made war against them on the sabbath day.

33E disseram-lhes: Basta o que fizestes até agora; saí e fazei segundo a ordem do rei, e vivereis.

33And they said unto them, Let that which ye have done hitherto suffice; come forth, and do according to the commandment of the king, and ye shall live.

34Mas eles disseram: Não sairemos, nem faremos a ordem do rei, para profanar o dia de sábado.

34But they said, We will not come forth, neither will we do the king’s commandment, to profane the sabbath day.

35Então os atacaram com toda a pressa.

35So then they gave them the battle with all speed.

36Contudo, eles não lhes responderam, nem lhes lançaram uma pedra, nem taparam os lugares onde estavam escondidos;

36Howbeit they answered them not, neither cast they a stone at them, nor stopped the places where they lay hid;

37mas disseram: Morramos todos na nossa inocência; o céu e a terra testificarão por nós de que nos matais injustamente.

37But said, Let us die all in our innocency: heaven and earth will testify for us, that ye put us to death wrongfully.

38Assim os atacaram no sábado e os mataram, com as suas mulheres, e filhos, e gado, em número de mil pessoas.

38So they rose up against them in battle on the sabbath, and they slew them, with their wives and children and their cattle, to the number of a thousand people.

39Quando Matatias e os seus amigos souberam disto, choraram amargamente por eles.

39Now when Mattathias and his friends understood hereof, they mourned for them right sore.

40E disseram uns aos outros: Se todos fizermos como fizeram os nossos irmãos, e não pelejarmos pelas nossas vidas e pelas nossas leis contra os gentios, logo nos exterminarão da terra.

40And one of them said to another, If we all do as our brethren have done, and fight not for our lives and laws against the heathen, they will now quickly root us out of the earth.

41Por isso naquele tempo decidiram, dizendo: Todo aquele que vier fazer-nos guerra no dia de sábado, pelejaremos contra ele; e não morreremos todos, como os nossos irmãos que foram mortos nos esconderijos.

41At that time therefore they decreed, saying, Whosoever shall come to make battle with us on the sabbath day, we will fight against him; neither will we die all, as our brethren that were murdered in the secret places.

42Então veio a ele uma companhia de assideus, homens valentes de Israel, todos os que se tinham consagrado voluntariamente à lei.

42Then came there unto him a company of Assideans who were mighty men of Israel, even all such as were voluntarily devoted unto the law.

43Também todos os que fugiam da perseguição se juntaram a eles e lhes serviram de apoio.

43Also all they that fled for persecution joined themselves unto them, and were a stay unto them.

44Assim uniram as suas forças, e feriram os pecadores na sua ira e os homens perversos no seu furor; e os demais fugiram para os gentios em busca de socorro.

44So they joined their forces, and smote sinful men in their anger, and wicked men in their wrath: but the rest fled to the heathen for succour.

45Então Matatias e os seus amigos percorreram a terra e derrubaram os altares;

45Then Mattathias and his friends went round about, and pulled down the altars:

46e todos os meninos incircuncisos que acharam dentro dos limites de Israel, circuncidaram-nos com valentia.

46And what children soever they found within the coast of Israel uncircumcised, those they circumcised valiantly.

47Perseguiram também os soberbos, e a obra prosperou nas suas mãos.

47They pursued also after the proud men, and the work prospered in their hand.

48Assim recobraram a lei da mão dos gentios e da mão dos reis, e não deixaram o pecador triunfar.

48So they recovered the law out of the hand of the Gentiles, and out of the hand of kings, neither suffered they the sinner to triumph.

49Quando se aproximou o tempo em que Matatias havia de morrer, disse aos seus filhos: Agora a soberba e o opróbrio tomaram força, e é o tempo da destruição e da ira da indignação.

49Now when the time drew near that Mattathias should die, he said unto his sons, Now hath pride and rebuke gotten strength, and the time of destruction, and the wrath of indignation:

50Agora, pois, meus filhos, sede zelosos pela lei e dai as vossas vidas pela aliança de vossos pais.

50Now therefore, my sons, be ye zealous for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of your fathers.

51Lembrai-vos das obras que os nossos pais fizeram no seu tempo; assim recebereis grande honra e um nome eterno.

51Call to remembrance what acts our fathers did in their time; so shall ye receive great honour and an everlasting name.

52Não foi Abraão achado fiel na provação, e isso lhe foi imputado como justiça?

52Was not Abraham found faithful in temptation, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness?

53José, no tempo da sua angústia, guardou o mandamento e foi feito senhor do Egito.

53Joseph in the time of his distress kept the commandment and was made lord of Egypt.

54Fineias, nosso pai, por ser zeloso e fervoroso, alcançou a aliança de um sacerdócio eterno.

54Phinees our father in being zealous and fervent obtained the covenant of an everlasting priesthood.

55Josué, por cumprir a palavra, foi feito juiz em Israel.

55Jesus for fulfilling the word was made a judge in Israel.

56Calebe, por dar testemunho diante da congregação, recebeu a herança da terra.

56Caleb for bearing witness before the congregation received the heritage of the land.

57Davi, por ser misericordioso, possuiu o trono de um reino eterno.

57David for being merciful possessed the throne of an everlasting kingdom.

58Elias, por ser zeloso e fervoroso pela lei, foi arrebatado ao céu.

58Elias for being zealous and fervent for the law was taken up into heaven.

59Ananias, Azarias e Misael, por crerem, foram salvos da chama.

59Ananias, Azarias, and Misael, by believing were saved out of the flame.

60Daniel, pela sua inocência, foi livrado da boca dos leões.

60Daniel for his innocency was delivered from the mouth of lions.

61E assim considerai de geração em geração que nenhum dos que confiam nele será vencido.

61And thus consider ye throughout all ages, that none that put their trust in him shall be overcome.

62Não temais, pois, as palavras do homem pecador; porque a sua glória será esterco e vermes.

62Fear not then the words of a sinful man: for his glory shall be dung and worms.

63Hoje será exaltado, e amanhã não será achado, porque voltou ao seu pó, e o seu pensamento pereceu.

63To day he shall be lifted up and to morrow he shall not be found, because he is returned into his dust, and his thought is come to nothing.

64Portanto, meus filhos, sede valentes e mostrai-vos homens em favor da lei; porque por ela alcançareis glória.

64Wherefore, ye my sons, be valiant and shew yourselves men in the behalf of the law; for by it shall ye obtain glory.

65E eis que sei que vosso irmão Simão é homem de conselho; ouvi-o sempre: ele vos será por pai.

65And behold, I know that your brother Simon is a man of counsel, give ear unto him alway: he shall be a father unto you.

66Quanto a Judas Macabeu, foi poderoso e forte desde a sua juventude; seja ele o vosso capitão e dirija a guerra do povo.

66As for Judas Maccabeus, he hath been mighty and strong, even from his youth up: let him be your captain, and fight the battle of the people.

67Tomai também convosco todos os que observam a lei, e vingai a injúria do vosso povo.

67Take also unto you all those that observe the law, and avenge ye the wrong of your people.

68Retribuí plenamente aos gentios, e atendei aos mandamentos da lei.

68Recompense fully the heathen, and take heed to the commandments of the law.

69Assim os abençoou, e foi reunido a seus pais.

69So he blessed them, and was gathered to his fathers.

70E morreu no ano cento e quarenta e seis, e os seus filhos o sepultaram nos sepulcros de seus pais, em Modin, e todo Israel fez grande pranto por ele.

70And he died in the hundred forty and sixth year, and his sons buried him in the sepulchres of his fathers at Modin, and all Israel made great lamentation for him.
