1 Macabeus 4

1Então Górgias tomou cinco mil infantes e mil dos melhores cavaleiros, e saiu do acampamento de noite,

1Then took Gorgias five thousand footmen, and a thousand of the best horsemen, and removed out of the camp by night;

2a fim de cair sobre o acampamento dos judeus e feri-los de surpresa. E os homens da cidadela lhe serviam de guias.

2To the end he might rush in upon the camp of the Jews, and smite them suddenly. And the men of the fortress were his guides.

3Quando Judas soube disto, partiu ele mesmo com os valentes que estavam com ele, para ferir o exército do rei que estava em Emaús,

3Now when Judas heard thereof he himself removed, and the valiant men with him, that he might smite the king’s army which was at Emmaus,

4enquanto as forças ainda estavam dispersas fora do acampamento.

4While as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp.

5Entretanto, Górgias chegou de noite ao acampamento de Judas; e, não achando ninguém ali, procurou-os nos montes; pois dizia: Estes fogem de nós.

5In the mean season came Gorgias by night into the camp of Judas: and when he found no man there, he sought them in the mountains: for said he, These fellows flee from us.

6Mas, logo que amanheceu, Judas apareceu na planície com três mil homens, que, contudo, não tinham armaduras nem espadas como desejavam.

6But as soon as it was day, Judas shewed himself in the plain with three thousand men, who nevertheless had neither armour nor swords to their minds.

7E viram o acampamento dos gentios, forte e bem armado, e cercado de cavalaria; e estes eram peritos na guerra.

7And they saw the camp of the heathen, that it was strong and well harnessed, and compassed round about with horsemen; and these were expert of war.

8Então Judas disse aos homens que estavam com ele: Não temais a sua multidão, nem tenhais medo do seu ataque.

8Then said Judas to the men that were with him, Fear ye not their multitude, neither be ye afraid of their assault.

9Lembrai-vos de como os nossos pais foram salvos no mar Vermelho, quando Faraó os perseguia com um exército.

9Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army.

10Agora, pois, clamemos ao céu, para ver se o Senhor terá misericórdia de nós, e se lembrará da aliança de nossos pais, e destruirá hoje este exército diante de nós;

10Now therefore let us cry unto heaven, if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us, and remember the covenant of our fathers, and destroy this host before our face this day:

11para que todos os gentios saibam que há quem livre e salve Israel.

11That so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel.

12Então os estrangeiros levantaram os olhos e os viram vir contra eles.

12Then the strangers lifted up their eyes, and saw them coming over against them.

13Por isso saíram do acampamento para a batalha; mas os que estavam com Judas tocaram as trombetas.

13Wherefore they went out of the camp to battle; but they that were with Judas sounded their trumpets.

14Assim travaram combate, e os gentios, derrotados, fugiram para a planície.

14So they joined battle, and the heathen being discomfited fled into the plain.

15Contudo, todos os da retaguarda foram mortos à espada; pois os perseguiram até Gazara e até as planícies da Idumeia, e de Azoto, e de Jâmnia, de modo que foram mortos deles cerca de três mil homens.

15Howbeit all the hindmost of them were slain with the sword: for they pursued them unto Gazera, and unto the plains of Idumea, and Azotus, and Jamnia, so that there were slain of them upon a three thousand men.

16Feito isto, Judas voltou com o seu exército de persegui-los,

16This done, Judas returned again with his host from pursuing them,

17e disse ao povo: Não sejais cobiçosos dos despojos, porque temos uma batalha diante de nós;

17And said to the people, Be not greedy of the spoil inasmuch as there is a battle before us,

18e Górgias e o seu exército estão aqui perto de nós, no monte; mas ficai agora firmes contra os nossos inimigos e vencei-os, e depois disto podereis tomar com segurança os despojos.

18And Gorgias and his host are here by us in the mountain: but stand ye now against our enemies, and overcome them, and after this ye may boldly take the spoils.

19Estando Judas ainda dizendo estas palavras, apareceu uma parte deles espreitando do monte;

19As Judas was yet speaking these words, there appeared a part of them looking out of the mountain:

20os quais, quando perceberam que os judeus tinham posto em fuga o seu exército e queimavam as tendas, pois a fumaça que se via mostrava o que acontecera,

20Who when they perceived that the Jews had put their host to flight and were burning the tents; for the smoke that was seen declared what was done:

21vendo, pois, estas coisas, tiveram muito medo; e, vendo também o exército de Judas na planície, pronto para a batalha,

21When therefore they perceived these things, they were sore afraid, and seeing also the host of Judas in the plain ready to fight,

22fugiram todos para a terra dos estrangeiros.

22They fled every one into the land of strangers.

23Então Judas voltou para saquear as tendas, onde tomaram muito ouro, e prata, e seda azul, e púrpura marinha, e grandes riquezas.

23Then Judas returned to spoil the tents, where they got much gold, and silver, and blue silk, and purple of the sea, and great riches.

24Depois disto voltaram para casa, e cantaram um cântico de ação de graças, e louvaram o Senhor no céu, porque ele é bom, porque a sua misericórdia dura para sempre.

24After this they went home, and sung a song of thanksgiving, and praised the Lord in heaven: because it is good, because his mercy endureth forever.

25Assim Israel teve naquele dia uma grande libertação.

25Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.

26Ora, todos os estrangeiros que escaparam vieram e contaram a Lísias o que acontecera;

26Now all the strangers that had escaped came and told Lysias what had happened:

27e ele, quando ouviu isto, ficou confundido e desanimado, porque nem se fizera a Israel o que ele queria, nem acontecera o que o rei lhe ordenara.

27Who, when he heard thereof, was confounded and discouraged, because neither such things as he would were done unto Israel, nor such things as the king commanded him were come to pass.

28Por isso, no ano seguinte, Lísias reuniu sessenta mil homens escolhidos de infantaria e cinco mil cavaleiros, para os subjugar.

28The next year therefore following Lysias gathered together threescore thousand choice men of foot, and five thousand horsemen, that he might subdue them.

29Assim vieram à Idumeia e acamparam em Betsura, e Judas foi ao encontro deles com dez mil homens.

29So they came into Idumea, and pitched their tents at Bethsura, and Judas met them with ten thousand men.

30E, quando viu aquele poderoso exército, orou e disse: Bendito és tu, ó Salvador de Israel, que abateste a violência do gigante pela mão do teu servo Davi, e entregaste o exército dos estrangeiros nas mãos de Jônatas, filho de Saul, e do seu escudeiro:

30And when he saw that mighty army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of Jonathan the son of Saul, and his armourbearer;

31entrega este exército na mão do teu povo Israel, e sejam confundidos no seu poder e na sua cavalaria;

31Shut up this army in the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their power and horsemen:

32tira-lhes o ânimo, e faze cair a ousadia da sua força, e tremam diante da sua destruição;

32Make them to be of no courage, and cause the boldness of their strength to fall away, and let them quake at their destruction:

33derruba-os com a espada dos que te amam, e louvem-te com ações de graças todos os que conhecem o teu nome.

33Cast them down with the sword of them that love thee, and let all those that know thy name praise thee with thanksgiving.

34Assim travaram combate; e foram mortos do exército de Lísias cerca de cinco mil homens; caíram diante deles.

34So they joined battle; and there were slain of the host of Lysias about five thousand men, even before them were they slain.

35Quando Lísias viu o seu exército posto em fuga, e a valentia dos soldados de Judas, e como estavam prontos a viver ou a morrer valorosamente, foi para Antioquia e reuniu uma tropa de estrangeiros; e, tendo aumentado o seu exército, propôs-se voltar à Judeia.

35Now when Lysias saw his army put to flight, and the manliness of Judas’ soldiers, and how they were ready either to live or die valiantly, he went into Antiochia, and gathered together a company of strangers, and having made his army greater than it was, he purposed to come again into Judea.

36Então Judas e seus irmãos disseram: Eis que os nossos inimigos estão derrotados; subamos para purificar e dedicar o santuário.

36Then said Judas and his brethren, Behold, our enemies are discomfited: let us go up to cleanse and dedicate the sanctuary.

37Com isto todo o exército se reuniu e subiu ao monte Sião.

37Upon this all the host assembled themselves together, and went up into mount Sion.

38E, quando viram o santuário desolado, e o altar profanado, e as portas queimadas, e arbustos crescendo nos átrios como num bosque ou num dos montes, e também as câmaras dos sacerdotes derrubadas,

38And when they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burned up, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest, or in one of the mountains, yea, and the priests’ chambers pulled down;

39rasgaram as vestes, e fizeram grande lamentação, e lançaram cinza sobre as cabeças,

39They rent their clothes, and made great lamentation, and cast ashes upon their heads,

40e prostraram-se com o rosto em terra, e tocaram o alarme com as trombetas, e clamaram ao céu.

40And fell down flat to the ground upon their faces, and blew an alarm with the trumpets, and cried toward heaven.

41Então Judas designou alguns homens para pelejar contra os que estavam na cidadela, até que purificasse o santuário.

41Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those that were in the fortress, until he had cleansed the sanctuary.

42Assim escolheu sacerdotes de conduta irrepreensível, que se deleitavam na lei;

42So he chose priests of blameless conversation, such as had pleasure in the law:

43os quais purificaram o santuário e levaram as pedras contaminadas para um lugar impuro.

43Who cleansed the sanctuary, and bare out the defiled stones into an unclean place.

44E, deliberando o que fariam com o altar dos holocaustos, que fora profanado,

44And when as they consulted what to do with the altar of burnt offerings, which was profaned;

45julgaram melhor derrubá-lo, para que não lhes fosse opróbrio, pois os gentios o tinham contaminado; por isso o derrubaram,

45They thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the heathen had defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down,

46e guardaram as pedras no monte do templo, num lugar conveniente, até que viesse um profeta que mostrasse o que se devia fazer delas.

46And laid up the stones in the mountain of the temple in a convenient place, until there should come a prophet to shew what should be done with them.

47Então tomaram pedras inteiras, segundo a lei, e edificaram um altar novo, semelhante ao anterior;

47Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former;

48e restauraram o santuário e o interior do templo, e santificaram os átrios.

48And made up the sanctuary, and the things that were within the temple, and hallowed the courts.

49Fizeram também novos vasos sagrados, e introduziram no templo o candelabro, e o altar dos holocaustos e o do incenso, e a mesa.

49They made also new holy vessels, and into the temple they brought the candlestick, and the altar of burnt offerings, and of incense, and the table.

50E queimaram incenso sobre o altar, e acenderam as lâmpadas que estavam sobre o candelabro, para darem luz no templo.

50And upon the altar they burned incense, and the lamps that were upon the candlestick they lighted, that they might give light in the temple.

51Além disso, puseram os pães sobre a mesa, e estenderam os véus, e acabaram todas as obras que tinham começado.

51Furthermore they set the loaves upon the table, and spread out the veils, and finished all the works which they had begun to make.

52No dia vinte e cinco do nono mês, que se chama Casleu, no ano cento e quarenta e oito, levantaram-se de madrugada,

52Now on the five and twentieth day of the ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up betimes in the morning,

53e ofereceram sacrifício, segundo a lei, sobre o novo altar dos holocaustos que tinham feito.

53And offered sacrifice according to the law upon the new altar of burnt offerings, which they had made.

54No mesmo tempo e no mesmo dia em que os gentios o tinham profanado, nesse mesmo foi ele dedicado com cânticos, e cítaras, e harpas, e címbalos.

54Look, at what time and what day the heathen had profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals.

55Então todo o povo se prostrou com o rosto em terra, adorando e louvando o Deus do céu, que lhes dera bom êxito.

55Then all the people fell upon their faces, worshipping and praising the God of heaven, who had given them good success.

56E assim celebraram a dedicação do altar durante oito dias, e ofereceram holocaustos com alegria, e sacrificaram o sacrifício de libertação e de louvor.

56And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed the sacrifice of deliverance and praise.

57Adornaram também a fachada do templo com coroas de ouro e com escudos; e renovaram as portas e as câmaras, e puseram-lhes portas.

57They decked also the forefront of the temple with crowns of gold, and with shields; and the gates and the chambers they renewed, and hanged doors upon them.

58Assim houve muito grande alegria entre o povo, porque foi tirado o opróbrio dos gentios.

58Thus was there very great gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the heathen was put away.

59Além disso, Judas e seus irmãos, com toda a congregação de Israel, ordenaram que os dias da dedicação do altar fossem celebrados no seu tempo, de ano em ano, durante oito dias, a partir do dia vinte e cinco do mês de Casleu, com alegria e regozijo.

59Moreover Judas and his brethren with the whole congregation of Israel ordained, that the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their season from year to year by the space of eight days, from the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, with mirth and gladness.

60Naquele tempo também fortificaram o monte Sião com muros altos e torres fortes em redor, para que os gentios não viessem pisá-lo como antes tinham feito.

60At that time also they builded up the mount Sion with high walls and strong towers round about, lest the Gentiles should come and tread it down as they had done before.

61E puseram ali uma guarnição para o guardar, e fortificaram Betsura para o proteger, a fim de que o povo tivesse uma defesa contra a Idumeia.

61And they set there a garrison to keep it, and fortified Bethsura to preserve it; that the people might have a defence against Idumea.
