1 Macabeus 9

1Além disso, quando Demétrio soube que Nicanor e o seu exército tinham sido mortos na batalha, enviou pela segunda vez Báquides e Alcimo à terra da Judeia, e com eles a principal força do seu exército;

1Furthermore, when Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his host were slain in battle, he sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judea the second time, and with them the chief strength of his host:

2os quais saíram pelo caminho que leva a Gálgala, e acamparam diante de Masalote, que está em Arbela; e, depois de a tomarem, mataram muita gente.

2Who went forth by the way that leadeth to Galgala, and pitched their tents before Masaloth, which is in Arbela, and after they had won it, they slew much people.

3Também no primeiro mês do ano cento e cinquenta e dois acamparam diante de Jerusalém;

3Also the first month of the hundred fifty and second year they encamped before Jerusalem:

4dali partiram e foram a Bereia, com vinte mil infantes e dois mil cavaleiros.

4From whence they removed, and went to Berea, with twenty thousand footmen and two thousand horsemen.

5Ora, Judas acampara em Eleasa, e com ele três mil homens escolhidos;

5Now Judas had pitched his tents at Eleasa, and three thousand chosen men with him:

6os quais, vendo que a multidão do outro exército era tão grande, tiveram muito medo; por isso muitos se retiraram do exército, de modo que não ficaram deles mais de oitocentos homens.

6Who seeing the multitude of the other army to be so great were sore afraid; whereupon many conveyed themselves out of the host, insomuch as abode of them no more but eight hundred men.

7Quando Judas viu que o seu exército se dispersava e que a batalha o apertava, ficou muito perturbado e angustiado, porque não tinha tempo para os reunir.

7When Judas therefore saw that his host slipt away, and that the battle pressed upon him, he was sore troubled in mind, and much distressed, for that he had no time to gather them together.

8Contudo, disse aos que ficaram: Levantemo-nos e subamos contra os nossos inimigos, se porventura pudermos pelejar contra eles.

8Nevertheless unto them that remained he said, Let us arise and go up against our enemies, if peradventure we may be able to fight with them.

9Mas eles o dissuadiam, dizendo: Nunca o poderemos; salvemos agora antes as nossas vidas, e depois voltaremos com os nossos irmãos e pelejaremos contra eles; pois somos poucos.

9But they dehorted him, saying, We shall never be able: let us now rather save our lives, and hereafter we will return with our brethren, and fight against them: for we are but few.

10Então Judas disse: Deus me livre de fazer tal coisa e fugir deles; se chegou a nossa hora, morramos valorosamente pelos nossos irmãos, e não manchemos a nossa honra.

10Then Judas said, God forbid that I should do this thing, and flee away from them: if our time be come, let us die manfully for our brethren, and let us not stain our honour.

11Com isto o exército de Báquides saiu das tendas e se pôs defronte deles, estando a sua cavalaria dividida em dois esquadrões, e os seus fundeiros e arqueiros iam adiante do exército, e os que marchavam na vanguarda eram todos homens valentes.

11With that the host of Bacchides removed out of their tents, and stood over against them, their horsemen being divided into two troops, and their slingers and archers going before the host and they that marched in the foreward were all mighty men.

12Quanto a Báquides, estava na ala direita; assim o exército se aproximou dos dois lados e tocou as trombetas.

12As for Bacchides, he was in the right wing: so the host drew near on the two parts, and sounded their trumpets.

13Também os do lado de Judas tocaram as suas trombetas, de modo que a terra tremeu com o estrondo dos exércitos, e a batalha durou desde a manhã até a noite.

13They also of Judas’ side, even they sounded their trumpets also, so that the earth shook at the noise of the armies, and the battle continued from morning till night.

14Quando Judas percebeu que Báquides e a força do seu exército estavam no lado direito, tomou consigo todos os homens mais valentes,

14Now when Judas perceived that Bacchides and the strength of his army were on the right side, he took with him all the hardy men,

15os quais derrotaram a ala direita e a perseguiram até o monte de Azoto.

15Who discomfited the right wing, and pursued them unto the mount Azotus.

16Mas, quando os da ala esquerda viram que os da ala direita tinham sido derrotados, seguiram Judas e os que estavam com ele de perto, pelas costas.

16But when they of the left wing saw that they of the right wing were discomfited, they followed upon Judas and those that were with him hard at the heels from behind:

17Então houve uma batalha dura, de modo que muitos foram mortos de ambos os lados.

17Whereupon there was a sore battle, insomuch as many were slain on both parts.

18Também Judas foi morto, e os demais fugiram.

18Judas also was killed, and the remnant fled.

19Então Jônatas e Simão tomaram Judas, seu irmão, e o sepultaram no sepulcro de seus pais, em Modin.

19Then Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother, and buried him in the sepulchre of his fathers in Modin.

20Além disso, choraram-no, e todo Israel fez grande lamentação por ele, e se enlutou muitos dias, dizendo:

20Moreover they bewailed him, and all Israel made great lamentation for him, and mourned many days, saying,

21Como caiu o valente que salvava Israel!

21How is the valiant man fallen, that delivered Israel!

22Quanto às outras coisas de Judas, e às suas guerras, e aos feitos nobres que praticou, e à sua grandeza, não foram escritas, porque eram muitíssimas.

22As for the other things concerning Judas and his wars, and the noble acts which he did, and his greatness, they are not written: for they were very many.

23Depois da morte de Judas, os ímpios começaram a levantar a cabeça em todos os territórios de Israel, e se levantaram todos os que praticavam a iniquidade.

23Now after the death of Judas the wicked began to put forth their heads in all the coasts of Israel, and there arose up all such as wrought iniquity.

24Naqueles dias houve também uma fome muito grande, por causa da qual a terra se passou para o lado deles.

24In those days also was there a very great famine, by reason whereof the country revolted, and went with them.

25Então Báquides escolheu os homens ímpios e os fez senhores da terra.

25Then Bacchides chose the wicked men, and made them lords of the country.

26E eles fizeram inquirição e busca dos amigos de Judas, e os levaram a Báquides, que se vingou deles e os tratou com desprezo.

26And they made enquiry and search for Judas’ friends, and brought them unto Bacchides, who took vengeance of them, and used them despitefully.

27Assim houve grande aflição em Israel, qual não houvera desde o tempo em que não se via profeta entre eles.

27So was there a great affliction in Israel, the like whereof was not since the time that a prophet was not seen among them.

28Por esta causa todos os amigos de Judas se reuniram e disseram a Jônatas:

28For this cause all Judas’ friends came together, and said unto Jonathan,

29Desde que morreu teu irmão Judas, não temos homem semelhante a ele para sair contra os nossos inimigos, e contra Báquides, e contra os da nossa nação que nos são adversários.

29Since thy brother Judas died, we have no man like him to go forth against our enemies, and Bacchides, and against them of our nation that are adversaries to us.

30Agora, pois, escolhemos-te hoje para seres o nosso príncipe e capitão em seu lugar, para que dirijas as nossas batalhas.

30Now therefore we have chosen thee this day to be our prince and captain in his stead, that thou mayest fight our battles.

31Então Jônatas tomou naquele tempo o governo e levantou-se em lugar de seu irmão Judas.

31Upon this Jonathan took the governance upon him at that time, and rose up instead of his brother Judas.

32Mas, quando Báquides soube disto, procurou matá-lo.

32But when Bacchides gat knowledge thereof, he sought for to slay him.

33Então Jônatas, e Simão, seu irmão, e todos os que estavam com ele, percebendo isto, fugiram para o deserto de Tecoa e acamparam junto à água do tanque de Asfar.

33Then Jonathan, and Simon his brother, and all that were with him, perceiving that, fled into the wilderness of Thecoe, and pitched their tents by the water of the pool Asphar.

34Quando Báquides soube disto, aproximou-se do Jordão com todo o seu exército no dia de sábado.

34Which when Bacchides understood, he came near to Jordan with all his host upon the sabbath day.

35Ora, Jônatas enviara seu irmão João, chefe do povo, a pedir aos seus amigos, os nabateus, que guardassem a bagagem deles, que era muita.

35Now Jonathan had sent his brother John, a captain of the people, to pray his friends the Nabathites, that they might leave with them their carriage, which was much.

36Mas os filhos de Jambri saíram de Medaba, e prenderam João e tudo o que tinha, e se foram com isso.

36But the children of Jambri came out of Medaba, and took John, and all that he had, and went their way with it.

37Depois disto, chegou a Jônatas e a Simão, seu irmão, a notícia de que os filhos de Jambri celebravam um grande casamento e traziam a noiva de Nadabate com grande séquito, por ser filha de um dos grandes príncipes de Canaã.

37After this came word to Jonathan and Simon his brother, that the children of Jambri made a great marriage, and were bringing the bride from Nadabatha with a great train, as being the daughter of one of the great princes of Chanaan.

38Por isso se lembraram de João, seu irmão, e subiram, e se esconderam ao abrigo do monte;

38Therefore they remembered John their brother, and went up, and hid themselves under the covert of the mountain:

39onde levantaram os olhos e olharam, e eis um grande alvoroço e muita bagagem; e o noivo saiu, com os seus amigos e irmãos, ao encontro deles, com tambores, e instrumentos de música, e muitas armas.

39Where they lifted up their eyes, and looked, and, behold, there was much ado and great carriage: and the bridegroom came forth, and his friends and brethren, to meet them with drums, and instruments of musick, and many weapons.

40Então Jônatas e os que estavam com ele se levantaram contra eles do lugar onde estavam de emboscada, e fizeram deles tal matança que muitos caíram mortos, e os demais fugiram para o monte; e tomaram todos os seus despojos.

40Then Jonathan and they that were with him rose up against them from the place where they lay in ambush, and made a slaughter of them in such sort, as many fell down dead, and the remnant fled into the mountain, and they took all their spoils.

41Assim o casamento se converteu em luto, e o som das suas melodias em lamentação.

41Thus was the marriage turned into mourning, and the noise of their melody into lamentation.

42E, tendo vingado plenamente o sangue de seu irmão, voltaram para o pântano do Jordão.

42So when they had avenged fully the blood of their brother, they turned again to the marsh of Jordan.

43Quando Báquides soube disto, veio no dia de sábado às margens do Jordão com grande força.

43Now when Bacchides heard hereof, he came on the sabbath day unto the banks of Jordan with a great power.

44Então Jônatas disse aos seus: Subamos agora e pelejemos pelas nossas vidas, porque hoje não é para nós como nos tempos passados;

44Then Jonathan said to his company, Let us go up now and fight for our lives, for it standeth not with us to day, as in time past:

45pois eis que a batalha está diante de nós e atrás de nós, e a água do Jordão de um lado e de outro, e também o pântano e o bosque, e não há lugar para nos desviarmos.

45For, behold, the battle is before us and behind us, and the water of Jordan on this side and that side, the marsh likewise and wood, neither is there place for us to turn aside.

46Clamai, pois, agora ao céu, para que sejais livrados da mão dos vossos inimigos.

46Wherefore cry ye now unto heaven, that ye may be delivered from the hand of your enemies.

47Com isto travaram combate, e Jônatas estendeu a mão para ferir Báquides, mas este recuou diante dele.

47With that they joined battle, and Jonathan stretched forth his hand to smite Bacchides, but he turned back from him.

48Então Jônatas e os que estavam com ele saltaram no Jordão e passaram a nado para a outra margem; mas os outros não passaram o Jordão até eles.

48Then Jonathan and they that were with him leapt into Jordan, and swam over unto the other bank: howbeit the other passed not over Jordan unto them.

49Assim foram mortos do lado de Báquides naquele dia cerca de mil homens.

49So there were slain of Bacchides’ side that day about a thousand men.

50Depois Báquides voltou a Jerusalém e reparou as cidades fortes da Judeia: a fortaleza de Jericó, e Emaús, e Bet-Horom, e Betel, e Tamnata, Faratoni e Tafom; estas ele fortificou com muros altos, com portas e ferrolhos.

50Afterward returned Bacchides to Jerusalem and repaired the strong cities in Judea; the fort in Jericho, and Emmaus, and Bethhoron, and Beth-el, and Thamnatha, Pharathoni, and Taphon, these did he strengthen with high walls, with gates and with bars.

51E pôs nelas guarnições, para fazerem mal a Israel.

51And in them he set a garrison, that they might work malice upon Israel.

52Fortificou também a cidade de Betsura, e Gazara, e a cidadela, e pôs nelas tropas e provisão de víveres.

52He fortified also the city Bethsura, and Gazera, and the tower, and put forces in them, and provision of victuals.

53Além disso, tomou como reféns os filhos dos principais homens da terra e os pôs na cidadela de Jerusalém, sob guarda.

53Besides, he took the chief men’s sons in the country for hostages, and put them into the tower at Jerusalem to be kept.

54Além disso, no ano cento e cinquenta e três, no segundo mês, Alcimo mandou derrubar o muro do átrio interior do santuário; derrubou também as obras dos profetas.

54Moreover in the hundred fifty and third year, in the second month, Alcimus commanded that the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary should be pulled down; he pulled down also the works of the prophets.

55E, quando começou a derrubar, nesse mesmo tempo Alcimo foi ferido, e os seus empreendimentos foram impedidos; pois a sua boca se fechou, e foi tomado de paralisia, de modo que não podia mais falar coisa alguma, nem dar ordens acerca da sua casa.

55And as he began to pull down, even at that time was Alcimus plagued, and his enterprizes hindered: for his mouth was stopped, and he was taken with a palsy, so that he could no more speak any thing, nor give order concerning his house.

56Assim Alcimo morreu naquele tempo com grande tormento.

56So Alcimus died at that time with great torment.

57Quando Báquides viu que Alcimo estava morto, voltou para o rei; por isso a terra da Judeia teve descanso dois anos.

57Now when Bacchides saw that Alcimus was dead, he returned to the king: whereupon the land of Judea was in rest two years.

58Então todos os homens ímpios fizeram conselho, dizendo: Eis que Jônatas e os seus estão tranquilos e vivem sem cuidado; agora, pois, traremos aqui Báquides, que os prenderá a todos numa só noite.

58Then all the ungodly men held a council, saying, Behold, Jonathan and his company are at ease, and dwell without care: now therefore we will bring Bacchides hither, who shall take them all in one night.

59Assim foram e se aconselharam com ele.

59So they went and consulted with him.

60Então ele partiu e veio com grande exército, e enviou cartas secretamente aos seus partidários na Judeia, para que prendessem Jônatas e os que estavam com ele; mas não puderam, porque o seu plano lhes foi conhecido.

60Then removed he, and came with a great host, and sent letters privily to his adherents in Judea, that they should take Jonathan and those that were with him: howbeit they could not, because their counsel was known unto them.

61Por isso prenderam dos homens da terra, que eram autores daquela maldade, cerca de cinquenta pessoas, e os mataram.

61Wherefore they took of the men of the country, that were authors of that mischief, about fifty persons, and slew them.

62Depois Jônatas, e Simão, e os que estavam com ele se retiraram para Betbasi, que está no deserto, e repararam as suas ruínas e a fortificaram.

62Afterward Jonathan, and Simon, and they that were with him, got them away to Bethbasi, which is in the wilderness, and they repaired the decays thereof, and made it strong.

63Quando Báquides soube disto, reuniu todo o seu exército e mandou avisar os que eram da Judeia.

63Which thing when Bacchides knew, he gathered together all his host, and sent word to them that were of Judea.

64Então foi e sitiou Betbasi; e a atacaram por muito tempo e fizeram máquinas de guerra.

64Then went he and laid siege against Bethbasi; and they fought against it a long season and made engines of war.

65Mas Jônatas deixou seu irmão Simão na cidade e saiu ele mesmo pela terra, e saiu com certo número de homens.

65But Jonathan left his brother Simon in the city, and went forth himself into the country, and with a certain number went he forth.

66E feriu Odonarques e seus irmãos, e os filhos de Fasirom na sua tenda.

66And he smote Odonarkes and his brethren, and the children of Phasiron in their tent.

67E, quando começou a feri-los e subiu com as suas forças, Simão e os seus saíram da cidade e queimaram as máquinas de guerra,

67And when he began to smite them, and came up with his forces, Simon and his company went out of the city, and burned up the engines of war,

68e pelejaram contra Báquides, que foi derrotado por eles, e o afligiram muito; pois o seu plano e o seu trabalho foram em vão.

68And fought against Bacchides, who was discomfited by them, and they afflicted him sore: for his counsel and travail was in vain.

69Por isso se irou muito contra os homens ímpios que o tinham aconselhado a vir à terra, de modo que matou muitos deles, e resolveu voltar para a sua própria terra.

69Wherefore he was very wroth at the wicked men that gave him counsel to come into the country, inasmuch as he slew many of them, and purposed to return into his own country.

70Quando Jônatas soube disto, enviou-lhe embaixadores, para fazer a paz com ele e para que lhes entregasse os prisioneiros.

70Whereof when Jonathan had knowledge, he sent ambassadors unto him, to the end he should make peace with him, and deliver them the prisoners.

71Ele aceitou isto, e fez segundo as suas exigências, e lhe jurou que nunca lhe faria mal em todos os dias da sua vida.

71Which thing he accepted, and did according to his demands, and sware unto him that he would never do him harm all the days of his life.

72E, tendo-lhe restituído os prisioneiros que antes tomara da terra da Judeia, voltou e foi para a sua terra, e nunca mais veio aos seus territórios.

72When therefore he had restored unto him the prisoners that he had taken aforetime out of the land of Judea, he returned and went his way into his own land, neither came he any more into their borders.

73Assim cessou a espada de Israel; e Jônatas habitou em Micmás e começou a governar o povo; e destruiu os ímpios de Israel.

73Thus the sword ceased from Israel: but Jonathan dwelt at Machmas, and began to govern the people; and he destroyed the ungodly men out of Israel.
