2 Clemente 16

1Portanto, irmãos, visto que encontramos não pequena oportunidade para o arrependimento, tendo ainda tempo, voltemo-nos novamente para Deus que nos chamou, enquanto ainda temos Quem nos acolha.

1Therefore, brethren, since we have found no small opportunity for repentance, seeing that we have time, let us turn again unto God that called us, while we have still One that receiveth us.

2Pois se nos despedirmos destes deleites e subjugarmos a nossa alma, recusando satisfazer as suas más paixões, seremos participantes da misericórdia de Jesus.

2For if we bid farewell to these enjoyments and conquer our soul in refusing to fulfill its evil lusts, we shall be partakers of the mercy of Jesus.

3Mas sabei que o dia do juízo já vem como fornalha ardente, e os poderes dos céus se dissolverão, e toda a terra se derreterá como chumbo no fogo; e então se manifestarão as obras ocultas e patentes dos homens.

3But ye know that the day of judgment cometh even now as a burning oven, and the powers of the heavens shall melt, and all the earth as lead melting on the fire, and then shall appear the secret and open works of men.

4Boa coisa é, pois, a esmola, assim como o arrependimento do pecado. O jejum é melhor do que a oração, mas a esmola é melhor do que ambos. E o amor cobre multidão de pecados, mas a oração de uma boa consciência livra da morte. Bem-aventurado todo homem que for achado repleto destas coisas; pois a esmola alivia o fardo do pecado.

4Almsgiving therefore is a good thing, even as repentance from sin. Fasting is better than prayer, but almsgiving better than both. And love covereth a multitude of sins, but prayer out of a good conscience delivereth from death. Blessed is every man that is found full of these. For almsgiving lifteth off the burden of sin.
