3 Macabeus 1

1Ora, Filopátor, ao saber pelos que voltaram que Antíoco se apoderara dos lugares que lhe pertenciam, enviou ordens a todos os seus soldados de infantaria e de cavalaria, tomou consigo sua irmã Arsínoe, e marchou até as regiões de Ráfia, onde Antíoco e as suas forças estavam acampados.

1Now Philopater, on learning from those who came back that Antiochus had made himself master of the places which belonged to himself, sent orders to all his footmen and horsemen, took with him his sister Arsinoe, and marched out as far as the parts of Raphia, where Antiochus and his forces encamped.

2E um certo Teódoto, querendo levar a efeito o seu intento, tomou consigo os mais valentes dos homens de armas que outrora lhe haviam sido confiados por Ptolomeu, e penetrou de noite até a tenda de Ptolomeu, para o matar por sua própria conta, e assim pôr fim à guerra.

2And one Theodotus, intending to carry out his design, took with him the bravest of the armed men who had been before committed to his trust by Ptolemy, and got through at night to the tent of Ptolemy, to kill him on his own responsibility, and so to end the war.

3Mas Dositeu, chamado filho de Drimilo, judeu de nascimento, depois renegado das leis e dos costumes de sua pátria, levou Ptolomeu dali, e fez deitar na tenda, em seu lugar, um homem obscuro. Coube a este sofrer a sorte que era destinada ao outro.

3But Dositheus, called the son of Drimulus, by birth a Jew, afterward a renegade from the laws and observances of his country, conveyed Ptolemy away, and made an obscure person lie down in his stead in the tent. It befel this man to receive the fate which was meant for the other.

4Travou-se então um combate feroz; e, prevalecendo os homens de Antíoco, Arsínoe corria continuamente de fileira em fileira, e, com os cabelos desgrenhados, com lágrimas e rogos, pedia aos soldados que combatessem varonilmente por si mesmos, por seus filhos e por suas mulheres; e prometeu que, se saíssem vencedores, daria a cada um deles duas minas de ouro.

4A fierce battle then took place; and the men of Antiochus prevailing, Arsinoe continually went up and down the ranks, and with dishevelled hair, with tears and entreaties, begged the soldiers to fight manfully for themselves, their children, and wives; and promised that if they proved conquerors, she would give them two minæ of gold apiece.

5Assim aconteceu que os seus inimigos foram derrotados no combate corpo a corpo, e que muitos deles foram feitos prisioneiros.

5It thus fell out that their enemies were defeated in hand-to-hand encounter, and that many of them were taken prisoners.

6Tendo vencido essa investida, o rei resolveu então visitar as cidades vizinhas e animá-las.

6Having vanquished this attempt, the king then decided to proceed to the neighbouring cities, and encourage them.

7Fazendo isto, e dando donativos aos templos delas, inspirou confiança aos seus súditos.

7By doing this, and by making donations to their temples, he inspired his subjects with confidence.

8Os judeus também lhe enviaram alguns do seu conselho e dos seus anciãos. As saudações, os presentes de hospitalidade e as felicitações pelos sucessos passados, que lhe ofereceram, encheram-no de maior desejo de visitar a cidade deles.

8The Jews also sent some of their council and of their elders to him. The greetings, guest-gifts, and congratulations on the past, bestowed by them, filled him with the greater eagerness to visit their city.

9Tendo chegado a Jerusalém, sacrificado, oferecido ações de graças ao Deus Altíssimo, feito tudo o mais que convinha à santidade do lugar, e entrado no átrio interior,

9Having arrived at Jerusalem, sacrificed, and offered thank-offerings to the Greatest God, and done whatever else was suitable to the sanctity of the place, and entered the inner court,

10ficou tão impressionado com a exata magnificência do lugar, e admirou de tal modo a ordem do templo, que concebeu o propósito de entrar no próprio santuário.

10he was so struck with the exact magnificence of the place, and so wondered at the orderly arrangements of the temple, that he conceived the purpose of entering the sanctuary itself.

11E quando lhe disseram que isso não era permitido, pois nenhum da nação, nem mesmo os sacerdotes em geral, mas somente o sumo sacerdote supremo de todos, e este uma só vez por ano, podia entrar, de modo nenhum quis ceder.

11And when they told him that this was not permissible, none of the nation, no, nor even the priests in general, but only the supreme high priest of all, and he only once in a year, being allowed to go in, he would by no means give way.

12Então lhe leram a lei; mas ele persistiu em impor-se, exclamando que lhe devia ser permitido; e dizendo: Seja que eles estejam privados desta honra, eu não o devo estar.

12Then they read the law to him; but he persisted in obtruding himself, exclaiming, that he ought to be allowed: and saying, Be it that they were deprived of this honour, I ought not to be.

13E perguntou: Por que, entrando eu em todos os templos, nenhum dos sacerdotes presentes me proibiu?

13And he put the question, Why, when he entered all temples, none of the priests who were present forbad him?

14Alguém lhe respondeu irrefletidamente que fazia mal em gabar-se disso.

14He was thoughtlessly answered by some one, That he did wrong to boast of this.

15Pois bem, disse ele, uma vez que o fiz, seja qual for a causa, não entrarei, com ou sem o vosso consentimento?

15Well; since I have done this, said he, be the cause what it may, shall I not enter with or without your consent?

16E quando os sacerdotes, prostrados em suas vestes sagradas, imploravam ao Deus Altíssimo que viesse socorrê-los na hora da necessidade e afastasse a violência do feroz agressor, e enchiam o templo de lamentações e lágrimas,

16And when the priests fell down in their sacred vestments imploring the Greatest God to come and help in time of need, and to avert the violence of the fierce aggressor, and when they filled the temple with lamentations and tears,

17então os que haviam ficado na cidade se assustaram e correram para fora, incertos do que sucederia.

17then those who had been left behind in the city were scared, and rushed forth, uncertain of the event.

18As virgens, que haviam sido encerradas nos seus aposentos, saíram com as suas mães, lançando pó e cinza sobre as cabeças, e enchendo as ruas de clamores.

18Virgins, who had been shut up within their chambers, came out with their mothers, scattering dust and ashes on their heads, and filling the streets with outcries.

19As mulheres, recentemente desposadas, deixaram os seus tálamos, deixaram o recato que lhes convinha, e correram pela cidade em desordem.

19Women, but recently separated off, left their bridal chambers, left the reserve that befitted them, and ran about the city in a disorderly manner.

20Os recém-nascidos foram abandonados pelas mães ou pelas amas que deles cuidavam; uns aqui, outros ali, em casas ou nos campos; e estas mulheres, agora, com um ardor que não se podia conter, afluíam em multidão ao templo do Altíssimo.

20Newborn babes were deserted by the mothers or nurses who waited upon them; some here, some there, in houses, or in fields; these now, with an ardour which could not be checked, swarmed into the Most High temple.

21Várias eram as orações oferecidas pelos que se reuniam neste lugar, por causa do ímpio atentado do rei.

21Various were the prayers offered up by those who assembled in this place, on account of the unholy attempt of the king.

22Com eles havia alguns dos cidadãos que tomaram ânimo, e não quiseram submeter-se à obstinação dele, nem ao seu intento de levar a cabo o seu propósito.

22Along with these there were some of the citizens who took courage, and would not submit to his obstinacy, and his intention of carrying out his purpose.

23Clamando às armas e a morrer valentemente em defesa da lei de seus pais, provocaram grande tumulto no lugar, e a custo foram reconduzidos pelos velhos e pelos anciãos ao posto de oração que haviam ocupado antes.

23Calling out to arms, and to die bravely in defence of the law of their fathers, they created a great uproar in the place, and were with difficulty brought back by the aged and the elders to the station of prayer which they had occupied before.

24Durante todo esse tempo a multidão continuava a orar.

24During this time the multitude kept on praying.

25Os anciãos que cercavam o rei procuravam de muitas maneiras desviar o seu espírito altivo do desígnio que formara.

25The elders who surrounded the king strove in many ways to divert his haughty mind from the design which he had formed.

26Ele, no seu ânimo endurecido, insensível a toda persuasão, avançava para pôr em obra esse desígnio.

26He, in his hardened mood, insensible to all persuasion, was going onwards, with the view of carrying out this design.

27Contudo, até os seus próprios oficiais, quando viram isso, uniram-se aos judeus em súplica Àquele que tem todo o poder, para que os socorresse na presente crise e não fechasse os olhos a tão soberba iniquidade.

27Yet even his own officers, when they saw this, joined the Jews in an appeal to Him who has all power, to aid in the present crisis, and not wink at such overweening lawlessness.

28Tal era a frequência e a veemência do clamor da multidão reunida, que resultou um estrondo indescritível.

28Such was the frequency and the vehemence of the cry of the assembled crowd, that an indescribable noise ensued.

29Não somente os homens, mas as próprias paredes e o pavimento pareciam ressoar; preferindo todas as coisas a dissolução a ver o lugar profanado.

29Not the men only, the very walls and floor seemed to sound forth; all things preferring dissolution rather than to see the place defiled.
