3 Macabeus 2

1Então o sumo sacerdote Simão dobrou os joelhos diante do lugar santo, estendeu as mãos em postura reverente, e proferiu a seguinte súplica:

1Now was it that the high priest Simon bowed his knees over against the holy place, and spread out his hands in reverent form, and uttered the following supplication:

2Ó Senhor, Senhor, Rei dos céus, e Soberano de toda a criação, Santo entre os santos, único Governador, Todo-Poderoso, dá ouvidos a nós, que somos oprimidos por um ímpio e profano, que se ufana da sua confiança e da sua força.

2O Lord, Lord, King of the heavens, and Ruler of the whole creation, Holy among the holy, sole Governor, Almighty, give ear to us who are oppressed by a wicked and profane one, who exulteth in his confidence and strength.

3Tu, o Criador de tudo, o Senhor do universo, que és Governador justo, e julgas todos os que agem com orgulho e insolência.

3It is thou, the Creator of all, the Lord of the universe, who art a righteous Governor, and judgest all who act with pride and insolence.

4Foste tu que destruíste os antigos obreiros da injustiça, entre os quais estavam os gigantes, que confiavam na sua força e no seu atrevimento, cobrindo-os com um dilúvio sem medida.

4It was thou who didst destroy the former workers of unrighteousness, among whom were the giants, who trusted in their strength and hardihood, by covering them with a measureless flood.

5Foste tu que fizeste dos sodomitas, obreiros de excessiva iniquidade, homens notórios pelos seus vícios, um exemplo para as gerações futuras, quando os consumiste com fogo e enxofre.

5It was thou who didst make the Sodomites, those workers of exceeding iniquity, men notorious for their vices, an example to after generations, when thou didst consume them with fire and brimstone.

6Deste a conhecer o teu poder quando fizeste que o atrevido Faraó, o escravizador do teu povo, passasse pela prova de muitos e diversos flagelos.

6Thou didst make known thy power when thou causedst the bold Pharaoh, the enslaver of thy people, to pass through the ordeal of many and diverse inflictions.

7E fizeste rolar sobre ele as profundezas do mar, quando ele os perseguia com carros e com uma multidão de seguidores, e deste passagem segura aos que em ti confiaram, a ti, Senhor de toda a criação.

7And thou rolledst the depths of the sea over him, when he made pursuit with chariots, and with a multitude of followers, and gavest a safe passage to those who put their trust in thee, the Lord of the whole creation.

8Estes viram e sentiram as obras das tuas mãos, e louvaram-te, ó Todo-Poderoso.

8These saw and felt the works of thine hands, and praised thee the Almighty.

9Tu, ó Rei, quando criaste a terra ilimitada e sem medida, escolheste esta cidade; tornaste este lugar sagrado ao teu nome, embora de nada necessites; glorificaste-o com a tua ilustre presença, depois de o edificares para a glória do teu grande e honrado nome.

9Thou, O King, when thou createdst the illimitable and measureless earth, didst choose out this city: thou didst make this place sacred to thy name, albeit thou needest nothing: thou didst glorify it with thy illustrious presence, after constructing it to the glory of thy great and honourable name.

10E prometeste, por amor à casa de Israel, que se nos apartássemos de ti, e fôssemos afligidos, e depois viéssemos a esta casa e orássemos, tu ouvirias a nossa oração.

10And thou didst promise, out of love to the house of Israel, that should we fall away from thee, and become afflicted, and then come to this house and pray, thou wouldest hear our prayer.

11Em verdade tu és fiel e verdadeiro.

11Verily thou art faithful and true.

12E como muitas vezes socorreste os nossos pais quando estavam em apuros e em humilde estado, e os livraste de grandes perigos,

12And whereas thou didst often aid our fathers when hard pressed, and in low estate, and deliveredst them out of great dangers,

13vê agora, santo Rei, como, por causa dos nossos muitos e grandes pecados, estamos abatidos, e sujeitos aos nossos inimigos, e nos tornamos fracos e sem força.

13see now, holy King, how through our many and great sins we are borne down, and made subject to our enemies, and are become weak and powerless.

14Estando nós nesta baixa condição, este homem atrevido e profano procura desonrar este teu santo lugar, consagrado, dentre a terra, ao nome da tua Majestade.

14We being in this low condition, this bold and profane man seeks to dishonour this thy holy place, consecrated out of the earth to the name of thy Majesty.

15A tua morada, o céu dos céus, é de fato inacessível aos homens.

15Thy dwelling-place, the heaven of heavens, is indeed unapproachable to men.

16Mas, como te aprouve manifestar a tua glória entre o teu povo Israel, santificaste este lugar.

16But since it seemed good to thee to exhibit thy glory among thy people Israel, thou didst sanctify this place.

17Não nos castigues por meio da impureza dos homens deles, nem nos corrijas por meio da sua profanação; para que os sem lei não se gabem na sua ira, nem exultem em exuberante orgulho de palavras, e digam:

17Punish us not by means of the uncleanness of their men, nor chastise us by means of their profanity; lest the lawless ones should boast in their rage, and exult in exuberant pride of speech, and say,

18Pisamos a casa santa, como se pisam as casas idólatras.

18We have trampled upon the holy house, as idolatrous houses are trampled upon.

19Apaga as nossas iniquidades, e remove os nossos erros, e mostra a tua compaixão nesta hora.

19Blot out our iniquities, and do away with our errors, and shew forth thy compassion in this hour.

20Que as tuas misericórdias se adiantem depressa ao nosso encontro. Concede-nos paz, para que os abatidos e quebrantados de coração te louvem com a sua boca.

20Let thy mercies quickly go before us. Grant us peace, that the cast down and broken hearted may praise thee with their mouth.

21Naquele tempo Deus, que vê todas as coisas, que está acima de todos, Santo entre os santos, ouviu aquela oração, tão conveniente; e feriu duramente o homem grandemente exaltado em desprezo e insolência.

21At that time God, who seeth all things, who is beyond all Holy among the holy, heard that prayer, so suitable; and scourged the man greatly uplifted with scorn and insolence.

22Sacudindo-o de um lado para outro, como se sacode uma cana ao vento, lançou-o sobre o pavimento, sem forças, com os membros paralisados; por um justo juízo privado da faculdade da fala.

22Shaking him to and fro as a reed is shaken with the wind, he cast him upon the pavement, powerless, with limbs paralyzed; by a righteous judgment deprived of the faculty of speech.

23Os seus amigos e guarda-costas, vendo a pronta retribuição que de repente o alcançara, tomados de excessivo terror, e temendo que ele morresse, apressaram-se a removê-lo.

23His friends and body-guards, beholding the swift recompense which had suddenly overtaken him, struck with exceeding terror, and fearing that he would die, speedily removed him.

24Quando, com o correr do tempo, ele voltou a si, este severo revés não produziu nele arrependimento algum, mas partiu com ameaças amargas.

24When in course of time he had come to himself, this severe check caused no repentance within him, but he departed with bitter threatenings.

25Foi para o Egito, e tornou-se pior na maldade por meio dos seus já mencionados companheiros de vinho, perdidos para toda bondade;

25He proceeded to Egypt, grew worse in wickedness through his beforementioned companions in wine, who were lost to all goodness;

26e, não satisfeito com inúmeros atos de impiedade, tanto lhe cresceu a audácia que ali levantou más notícias, e muitos dos seus amigos, observando atentamente o seu propósito, uniram-se para promover a sua vontade.

26and not satisfied with countless acts of impiety, his audacity so increased that he raised evil reports there, and many of his friends, watching his purpose attentively, joined in furthering his will.

27O seu propósito era infligir um estigma público à nossa raça; por isso ergueu uma coluna no pórtico da torre, e mandou gravar nela a seguinte inscrição:

27His purpose was to inflict a public stigma upon our race; wherefore he erected a pillar at the tower-porch, and caused the following inscription to be engraven upon it:

28Que a entrada no seu próprio templo fosse recusada a todos os que não sacrificassem; que todos os judeus fossem registrados entre o povo comum; que os que resistissem fossem à força apanhados e mortos;

28That entrance to their own temple was to be refused to all those who would not sacrifice; that all the Jews were to be registered among the common people; that those who resisted were to be forcibly seized and put to death;

29que os que assim fossem registrados fossem marcados no corpo com o símbolo da folha de hera de Dioniso, e fossem separados com estes direitos limitados.

29that those who were thus registered, were to be marked on their persons by the ivy-leaf symbol of Dionysus, and to be set apart with these limited rights.

30Para desfazer a aparência de odiá-los a todos, mandou escrever por baixo que, se algum deles escolhesse entrar na comunidade dos iniciados nos ritos, estes teriam direitos iguais aos dos alexandrinos.

30To do away with the appearance of hating them all, he had it written underneath, that if any of them should elect to enter the community of those initiated in the rites, these should have equal rights with the Alexandrians.

31Alguns dos que presidiam à cidade, portanto, abominando toda aproximação da cidade da piedade, cederam sem hesitar ao rei, e esperavam tirar grande honra de uma futura ligação com ele.

31Some of those who were over the city, therefore, abhorring any approach to the city of piety, unhesitatingly gave in to the king, and expected to derive some great honour from a future connection with him.

32Um espírito mais nobre, porém, levou a maioria a apegar-se às suas observâncias religiosas, e, pagando dinheiro para viverem sem ser molestados, procuraram escapar ao registro:

32A nobler spirit, however, prompted the majority to cling to their religious observances, and by paying money that they might live unmolested, these sought to escape the registration:

33esperando alegremente o socorro futuro, abominavam os seus próprios apóstatas, considerando-os inimigos da nação, e excluindo-os dos usos comuns do convívio social.

33cheerfully looking forward to future aid, they abhorred their own apostates, considering them to be national foes, and debarring them from the common usages of social intercourse.
