3 Macabeus 7

1O rei Ptolomeu Filopátor aos comandantes em todo o Egito, e a todos os que estão postos sobre os negócios, alegria e força.

1King Ptolemy Philopator to the commanders throughout Egypt, and to all who are set over affairs, joy and strength.

2Nós também, e os nossos filhos, estamos bem; e Deus dirigiu os nossos negócios como desejamos.

2We, too, and our children are well; and God has directed our affairs as we wish.

3Certos amigos nossos, por malícia, instaram veementemente conosco para que castigássemos em conjunto os judeus do nosso reino, com a aplicação de um castigo monstruoso.

3Certain of our friends did of malice vehemently urge us to punish the Jews of our realm in a body, with the infliction of a monstrous punishment.

4Pretendiam que os nossos negócios jamais estariam em bom estado enquanto isso não se fizesse. Tal, diziam, era o ódio que os judeus têm a todos os outros povos.

4They pretended that our affairs would never be in a good state till this took place. Such, they said, was the hatred borne by the Jews to all other people.

5Traziam-nos acorrentados em cadeias penosas como escravos, antes, como traidores. Sem inquérito nem exame, esforçaram-se por aniquilá-los. Cingiram-se de uma crueldade selvagem, pior que o costume cita.

5They brought them fettered in grievous chains as slaves, nay, as traitors. Without enquiry or examination they endeavoured to annihilate them. They buckled themselves with a savage cruelty, worse than Scythian custom.

6Por esta causa os ameaçamos severamente; contudo, com a clemência que costumamos estender a todos os homens, permitimos-lhes por fim que vivessem. Achando que o Deus do céu lançou um escudo de proteção sobre os judeus, de modo a preservá-los, e que ele combatia por eles como um pai sempre combate por seus filhos;

6For this cause we severely threatened them; yet, with the clemency which we are wont to extend to all men, we at length permitted them to live. Finding that the God of heaven cast a shield of protection over the Jews so as to preserve them, and that he fought for them as a father always fights for his sons;

7e tomando em consideração a sua constância e fidelidade para conosco e para com os nossos antepassados, nós os absolvemos, como devíamos, de toda espécie de acusação.

7and taking into consideration their constancy and fidelity towards us and towards our ancestors, we have, as we ought, acquitted them of every sort of charge.

8E despedimo-los para as suas várias casas; mandando a todos os homens, em toda parte, que não lhes façam mal algum, nem os injuriem injustamente por causa do passado.

8And we have dismissed them to their several homes; bidding all men everywhere to do them no wrong, or unrighteously revile them about the past.

9Pois sabei que, se concebermos algum mau desígnio contra eles, ou de qualquer modo os molestarmos, teremos sempre por adversário, não o homem, mas o Deus Altíssimo, o soberano de todo poder. Dele não haverá escapatória, como vingador de tais obras. Passai bem.

9For know ye, that should we conceive any evil design against, or in any manner aggrieve them, we shall ever have as our opposite, not man, but the highest God, the ruler of all might. From Him there will be no escape, as the avenger of such deeds. Fare ye well.

10Quando receberam esta carta, não se apressaram a partir imediatamente. Peticionaram ao rei que lhes fosse permitido infligir o devido castigo àqueles da sua raça que voluntariamente haviam transgredido contra o santo Deus e a lei de Deus.

10When they had received this letter, they were not forward to depart immediately. They petitioned the king to be allowed to inflict fitting punishment upon those of their race who had willingly transgressed the holy God, and the law of God.

11Alegaram que homens que, por causa do ventre, transgrediram as ordenanças de Deus, jamais seriam fiéis aos interesses do rei.

11They alleged that men who had for their bellies' sake transgressed the ordinances of God, would never be faithful to the interests of the king.

12O rei admitiu a verdade deste raciocínio, e os elogiou. Foi-lhes dado pleno poder, sem mandado nem comissão especial, para destruir, com ousadia, em todas as partes dos domínios do rei, os que haviam transgredido a lei de Deus.

12The king admitted the truth of this reasoning, and commended them. Full power was given them, without warrant or special commission, to destroy those who had transgressed the law of God boldly in every part of the king's dominions.

13Os seus sacerdotes, então, como era justo, o saudaram com bons votos, e todo o povo respondeu com o Aleluia. Depois partiram alegremente.

13Their priests, then, as it was meet, saluted him with good wishes, and all the people echoed with the Hallelujah. They then joyfully departed.

14Então castigaram e destruíram com ignomínia todo judeu poluído que lhes caía no caminho;

14Then they punished and destroyed with ignominy every polluted Jew that fell in their way;

15matando assim, naquele dia, mais de trezentos homens, e estimando esta destruição dos ímpios uma ocasião de alegria.

15slaying thus, in that day, above three hundred men, and esteeming this destruction of the wicked a season of joy.

16Eles mesmos, tendo se apegado ao seu Deus até à morte, e tendo gozado plena libertação, partiram da cidade engrinaldados com coroas de flores odoríferas de toda espécie. Proferindo exclamações de alegria, com cânticos de louvor e melodiosos hinos, agradeceram ao Deus de seus pais, o eterno Salvador de Israel.

16They themselves having held fast their God unto death, and having enjoyed a full deliverance, departed from the city garlanded with sweet-flowered wreaths of every kind. Uttering exclamations of joy, with songs of praise, and melodious hymns they thanked the God of their fathers, the eternal Saviour of Israel.

17Tendo chegado a Ptolemaida, chamada, pela especialidade daquele distrito, Portadora de Rosas, onde a frota, conforme o desejo geral, os esperou sete dias,

17Having arrived at Ptolemais, called from the specialty of that district Rose-bearing, where the fleet, in accordance with the general wish, waited for them seven days,

18participaram de um banquete de libertação, pois o rei generosamente concedeu a cada um os meios de assegurar o regresso a casa.

18they partook of a banquet of deliverance, for the king generously granted them severally the means of securing a return home.

19Foram, pois, reconduzidos em paz, enquanto davam expressão a devidas ações de graças; e resolveram guardar estes dias, durante a sua peregrinação, como dias de alegria.

19They were accordingly brought back in peace, while they gave utterance to becoming thanks; and they determined to keep these days during their sojourn as days of joyfulness.

20Registraram-nos como sagrados numa coluna, depois de haverem dedicado o lugar da sua festa para ser um lugar de oração. Partiram ilesos, livres, abundantes em alegria, preservados por ordem do rei, por terra, por mar e por rio, cada um para a sua casa.

20These they registered as sacred upon a pillar, when they had dedicated the place of their festivity to be one of prayer. They departed unharmed, free, abundant in joy, preserved by the king's command, by land, by sea, and by river, each to his own home.

21Tinham mais peso do que antes entre os seus inimigos; e eram honrados e temidos, e ninguém de modo algum os despojou dos seus bens.

21They had more weight than before among their enemies; and were honoured and feared, and no one in any way robbed them of their goods.

22Cada homem recebeu de volta o que era seu, segundo o inventário; os que haviam obtido os seus bens entregaram-nos com o maior terror. Pois o Deus Altíssimo operou com perfeição maravilhas para a sua salvação.

22Every man received back his own, according to inventory; those who had obtained their goods, giving them up with the greatest terror. For the greatest God wrought with perfectness wonders for their salvation.

23Bendito seja o Redentor de Israel para sempre. Amém.

23Blessed be the Redeemer of Israel unto everlasting. Amen.
