4 Baruque 2

1Então Jeremias rasgou as suas vestes, pôs pó sobre a cabeça e entrou no santuário de Deus.

1But Jeremiah rent his garments, and put dust upon his head, and entered into the sanctuary of God.

2E Baruque, vendo-o com pó espalhado sobre a cabeça e com as vestes rasgadas, clamou em alta voz, dizendo: Pai Jeremias, que tens, ou que pecado cometeu o povo?

2And Baruch, seeing him with dust sprinkled upon his head, and his garments rent, cried with a loud voice, saying: Father Jeremiah, what aileth thee, or what sin hath the people committed?

3Pois, sempre que o povo pecava, Jeremias espalhava pó sobre a cabeça e orava pelo povo, até que o pecado lhe fosse perdoado.

3For whensoever the people sinned, Jeremiah sprinkled dust upon his head, and prayed for the people, until the sin was forgiven it.

4E Baruque lhe perguntou, dizendo: Pai, que tens?

4And Baruch asked him, saying: Father, what aileth thee?

5E Jeremias lhe disse: Guarda-te de rasgar as tuas vestes, mas rasguemos os nossos corações; e não tiremos água para os bebedouros, mas choremos e enchamo-los com lágrimas; porque o Senhor não terá misericórdia deste povo.

5And Jeremiah said unto him: Beware of rending thy garments, but let us rend our hearts; and let us not draw water for the troughs, but let us weep and fill them with tears; for the Lord will not have mercy upon this people.

6E Baruque disse: Pai Jeremias, que aconteceu?

6And Baruch said: Father Jeremiah, what hath befallen?

7E Jeremias disse: Deus entrega a cidade nas mãos do rei dos caldeus, para levar o povo cativo para a Babilônia.

7And Jeremiah said: God delivereth the city into the hands of the king of the Chaldeans, to carry the people captive into Babylon.

8E, quando Baruque ouviu estas coisas, também ele rasgou as suas vestes, e disse: Pai Jeremias, quem te declarou isto?

8And when Baruch heard these things, he also rent his garments, and said: Father Jeremiah, who hath declared this unto thee?

9E Jeremias lhe disse: Espera um pouco comigo até a sexta hora da noite, para que saibas que a palavra é verdadeira.

9And Jeremiah said unto him: Wait a little with me until the sixth hour of the night, that thou mayest know that the word is true.

10Assim, permaneceram junto ao altar, chorando.

10So they abode at the altar, weeping.
