4 Baruque 7

1E Baruque levantou-se e saiu do sepulcro.

1And Baruch arose, and went forth out of the tomb.

2E a águia, respondendo com voz humana, disse: Salve, Baruque, despenseiro da fé.

2And the eagle, answering with a human voice, said: Hail, Baruch, steward of the faith.

3E Baruque lhe disse: Tu és escolhida, tu que falas, dentre todas as aves do céu; pois isso é manifesto pelo brilho dos teus olhos.

3And Baruch said unto him: Thou art chosen, thou that speakest, out of all the birds of heaven; for it is manifest from the brightness of thine eyes.

4Mostra-me, pois, que fazes aqui?

4Show me therefore, what doest thou here?

5E a águia lhe disse: Fui enviada aqui, para que, seja qual for a mensagem que quiseres, possas enviá-la por mim.

5And the eagle said unto him: I was sent hither, that whatsoever message thou wilt, thou mayest send by me.

6E Baruque lhe disse: És capaz de levar esta mensagem a Jeremias, na Babilônia?

6And Baruch said unto him: Art thou able to bear this message to Jeremiah into Babylon?

7E a águia lhe disse: Para isto mesmo fui enviada.

7And the eagle said unto him: For this very thing was I sent.

8E Baruque tomou a carta e quinze figos do cesto de Abimeleque, e atou-os ao pescoço da águia, e lhe disse:

8And Baruch took the letter, and fifteen figs out of the basket of Abimelech, and bound them upon the neck of the eagle, and said unto him:

9A ti falo, rei das aves, vai em paz e com saúde, e traze-me notícias.

9To thee I say, king of the birds, go in peace with health, and bring me the tidings.

10Não sejas como o corvo, que Noé enviou, e não voltou mais a ele para dentro da arca; mas sê como a pomba, que pela terceira vez trouxe notícias ao homem justo;

10Be not like the raven, which Noah sent forth, and it returned no more unto him into the ark; but be like the dove, which the third time brought tidings to the righteous man;

11assim também tu, leva estas boas notícias a Jeremias e aos que estão com ele, para que te vá bem; leva esta carta ao povo escolhido de Deus.

11so also do thou, bear this good tidings to Jeremiah and to them that are with him, that it may be well with thee; bear this letter to the chosen people of God.

12Se todas as aves do céu te cercarem, e todos os inimigos da verdade, querendo guerrear contra ti, combaterem, que o Senhor te dê poder. E não te desvies para a direita, nem para a esquerda, mas, como uma flecha que vai direta, assim vai no poder de Deus.

12If all the birds of heaven encircle thee, and all the enemies of the truth, wishing to war against thee, contend; may the Lord give thee power. And turn not aside to the right hand, nor to the left, but as an arrow going straight, so go in the power of God.

13Então a águia voou, levando a carta, e foi para a Babilônia, e pousou sobre uma certa árvore fora da cidade, num lugar deserto; e guardou silêncio até que Jeremias passou, ele mesmo e alguns outros do povo:

13Then the eagle flew, having the letter, and went unto Babylon, and rested upon a certain tree outside the city in a desert place; and he kept silence until Jeremiah passed by, himself and certain others of the people:

14pois iam sair para sepultar um morto; porque Jeremias havia pedido a Nabucodonosor, dizendo: Dá-me um lugar onde eu possa sepultar os mortos do meu povo. E ele lho deu.

14for they were going forth to bury a dead man; for Jeremiah had asked of Nebuchadnezzar, saying: Give me a place, where I may bury the dead of my people. And he gave it to him.

15E, enquanto iam, chorando com o morto, chegaram em frente da águia; e a águia clamou, dizendo: A ti falo, Jeremias, o escolhido de Deus, vai, reúne todo o povo, e venham para cá, a fim de ouvirem a boa proclamação que te trouxe da parte de Baruque e de Abimeleque.

15And as they went away, weeping with the dead man, they came opposite the eagle; and the eagle cried, saying: To thee I say, Jeremiah, the chosen of God, go, gather all the people, and let them come hither, that they may hear the good proclamation which I have brought thee from Baruch and from Abimelech.

16E Jeremias, ouvindo-a, glorificou a Deus; e, indo-se, reuniu o povo com mulheres e crianças, e veio onde estava a águia.

16And Jeremiah, hearing it, glorified God; and going away he gathered the people with women and children, and came where the eagle was.

17E a águia desceu sobre o morto, e ele viveu de novo; e isto foi feito para que cressem.

17And the eagle came down upon the dead man, and he lived again; and this was done that they might believe.

18E todo o povo se maravilhou do que foi feito, dizendo: Será este o Deus que apareceu aos nossos pais no deserto por meio de Moisés, e se fez na forma de uma águia, e nos apareceu por esta grande águia?

18And all the people marvelled at that which was done, saying: Can this be the God who appeared to our fathers in the wilderness by Moses, and made himself in the form of an eagle, and appeared unto us by this great eagle?

19E a águia disse a Jeremias: Vem cá, desata esta carta e lê-a ao povo.

19And the eagle said unto Jeremiah: Come hither, unloose this letter, and read it to the people.

20Assim, tendo desatado a carta, leu-a ao povo. E, quando o povo ouviu, chorou e pôs pó sobre a cabeça; e disseram a Jeremias:

20So having unloosed the letter, he read it to the people. And when the people heard, they wept, and put dust upon their heads; and they said unto Jeremiah:

21Salva-nos e dize-nos o que havemos de fazer, para que entremos de novo na nossa cidade.

21Save us, and tell us what we shall do, that we may enter again into our city.

22E Jeremias respondeu e lhes disse: Tudo o que ouvistes da carta, guardai; e ele nos levará à nossa cidade.

22And Jeremiah answered and said unto them: All that ye have heard out of the letter, keep; and he will bring us into our city.

23E Jeremias escreveu também uma carta a Baruque, dizendo assim: Meu amado filho, não negligencies, nas tuas orações, rogar por nós, para que ele faça prosperar o nosso caminho, até que saiamos dos mandamentos deste rei iníquo; pois foste achado justo diante dele, e ele não te permitiu vir aqui conosco, para que não visses a aflição que sobreveio ao povo da parte dos babilônios;

23And Jeremiah wrote also a letter unto Baruch, saying thus: My beloved son, neglect not, in thy prayers, to entreat for us, that he may prosper our way, until we go out from the commandments of this lawless king; for thou wast found righteous before him, and he suffered thee not to come in hither with us, that thou shouldest not see the affliction which hath befallen the people from the Babylonians;

24pois, como um pai, tendo um filho unigênito, e sendo este entregue ao castigo; então os que veem o pai e o consolam lhe cobrem o rosto, para que não veja como o seu próprio filho é castigado, e não seja ainda mais destruído pela dor; assim também Deus se compadeceu de ti e não te permitiu vir à Babilônia, para que não visses a aflição do povo; pois desde o tempo em que entramos nesta cidade, a dor não cessou de nós, sessenta e seis anos hoje.

24for as a father, having an only-begotten son, and he being delivered up to punishment; they therefore who see the father, and comfort him, cover his face, that he may not see how his son himself is punished, and be the more destroyed by grief; for even so hath God had mercy on thee, and suffered thee not to come into Babylon, that thou shouldest not see the affliction of the people; for from the time that we entered into this city the grief hath not ceased from us, sixty and six years this day.

25Pois muitas vezes, ao sair, achei alguns do povo pendurados por Nabucodonosor, o rei, chorando e dizendo: Tem misericórdia de nós, ó Deus Zar.

25For often, as I went forth, I found some of the people hanging by Nebuchadnezzar the king, weeping and saying: Have mercy upon us, O God Zar.

26Ouvindo estas coisas, entristeci-me e chorei um choro duplo; não só porque estavam enforcados, mas porque invocavam um deus estranho, dizendo: Tem misericórdia de nós.

26Hearing these things, I was grieved, and wept a twofold weeping; not only because they were hanged, but because they called upon a strange god, saying: Have mercy upon us.

27E lembrei-me dos dias de festa que celebrávamos em Jerusalém antes de sermos levados cativos. E, lembrando-me, gemi, e voltei à minha casa em dor e em choro.

27And I remembered the days of feast which we kept in Jerusalem before we were carried captive. And remembering, I groaned, and returned to my house in pain and weeping.

28Agora, pois, ora, para o lugar onde estás, tu e Abimeleque, por este povo, para que ouçam a minha voz e os juízos da minha boca, e para que saiamos daqui.

28Now therefore pray, unto the place where thou art, thou and Abimelech, for this people, that they may hearken unto my voice and the judgments of my mouth, and that we may go out from hence.

29Pois eu te digo que, todo o tempo que passamos aqui, eles nos seguram, dizendo: Cantai-nos um cântico dos cânticos de Sião, e o cântico do vosso Deus. E lhes respondemos: Como cantaremos para vós, estando em terra estranha?

29For I say unto thee, that all the time which we have spent here, they hold us fast, saying: Sing us a song from the songs of Zion, and the song of your God. And we answered them: How shall we sing unto you, being in a strange land?

30E depois destas coisas atou a carta ao pescoço da águia, dizendo: Vai em paz; o Senhor visite a ambos.

30And after these things he bound the letter upon the neck of the eagle, saying: Go in peace; may the Lord visit both.

31E a águia voou e trouxe a carta, e deu-a a Baruque. E, tendo-a desatado, leu-a, e beijou-a, e chorou, tendo ouvido, por causa das dores e das aflições do povo.

31And the eagle flew, and brought the letter, and gave it to Baruch. And having unloosed it, he read it, and kissed it, and wept, having heard, because of the griefs and the afflictions of the people.

32E Jeremias, tomando os figos, distribuiu-os aos enfermos do povo. E permaneceu ensinando-os a abster-se das contaminações das nações da Babilônia.

32And Jeremiah, taking the figs, distributed them to the sick of the people. And he abode teaching them to abstain from the defilements of the nations of Babylon.
