4 Esdras 10

1E sucedeu que, quando o meu filho entrou na sua câmara nupcial, caiu e morreu.

1And it so came to pass, that when my son was entered into his wedding chamber, he fell down, and died.

2Então todos nós derrubamos as luzes, e todos os meus vizinhos se levantaram para me consolar; assim descansei até a noite do segundo dia.

2Then we all overthrew the lights, and all my neighbours rose up to comfort me: so I took my rest unto the second day at night.

3E aconteceu que, quando todos haviam cessado de me consolar, a fim de que eu tivesse repouso, levantei-me de noite e fugi, e vim para este campo, como vês.

3And it came to pass, when they had all left off to comfort me, to the end I might be quiet; then rose I up by night and fled, and came hither into this field, as thou seest.

4E agora proponho no meu coração não voltar para a cidade, mas aqui permanecer, e não comer nem beber, mas jejuar e prantear continuamente até morrer.

4And I do now purpose not to return into the city, but here to stay, and neither to eat nor drink, but continually to mourn and to fast until I die.

5Então deixei as meditações em que estava e falei-lhe com indignação, dizendo:

5Then left I the meditations wherein I was, and spake to her in anger, saying,

6Mulher insensata sobre todas as outras, não vês o nosso pranto e o que nos sucedeu?

6Thou foolish woman above all other, seest thou not our mourning, and what happeneth unto us?

7Como Sião, nossa mãe, está cheia de toda a tristeza, e mui humilhada, chorando amargamente?

7How that Sion our mother is full of all heaviness, and much humbled, mourning very sore?

8E agora, vendo que todos nós pranteamos e estamos tristes, pois estamos todos em angústia, estás tu aflita por causa de um só filho?

8And now, seeing we all mourn and are sad, for we are all in heaviness, art thou grieved for one son?

9Pois pergunta à terra, e ela te dirá que é ela que deve chorar pela queda de tantos que sobre ela nasceram.

9For ask the earth, and she shall tell thee, that it is she which ought to mourn for the fall of so many that grow upon her.

10Pois dela todos saíram no princípio, e dela virão todos os outros; e eis que caminham quase todos para a perdição, e uma multidão deles é de todo desarraigada.

10For out of her came all at the first, and out of her shall all others come, and, behold, they walk almost all into destruction, and a multitude of them is utterly rooted out.

11Quem, pois, deveria fazer maior pranto senão aquela que perdeu tão grande multidão, e não tu, que te entristeces por um só?

11Who then should make more mourning than she, that hath lost so great a multitude; and not thou, which art sorry but for one?

12Mas se me disseres: A minha lamentação não é como a da terra, porque perdi o fruto do meu ventre, que gerei com dores e dei à luz com aflições;

12But if thou sayest unto me, My lamentation is not like the earth's, because I have lost the fruit of my womb, which I brought forth with pains, and bare with sorrows;

13Porém com a terra não é assim, pois a multidão nela presente, segundo o curso da terra, vai-se como veio:

13But the earth not so: for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone, as it came:

14Então eu te digo: Assim como deste à luz com trabalho, assim também a terra deu o seu fruto, a saber, o homem, desde o princípio Àquele que a fez.

14Then say I unto thee, Like as thou hast brought forth with labour; even so the earth also hath given her fruit, namely, man, ever since the beginning unto him that made her.

15Agora, pois, guarda para ti a tua tristeza, e suporta com bom ânimo o que te sobreveio.

15Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thyself, and bear with a good courage that which hath befallen thee.

16Porque, se reconheceres ser justo o decreto de Deus, a seu tempo receberás o teu filho e serás louvada entre as mulheres.

16For if thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just, thou shalt both receive thy son in time, and shalt be commended among women.

17Vai, pois, para a cidade, para o teu marido.

17Go thy way then into the city to thine husband.

18E ela me disse: Não o farei; não irei para a cidade, mas aqui hei de morrer.

18And she said unto me, That will I not do: I will not go into the city, but here will I die.

19Então prossegui falando-lhe ainda mais, e disse:

19So I proceeded to speak further unto her, and said,

20Não faças isso, mas aconselha-te comigo; pois quantas são as adversidades de Sião? Sê consolada por causa da dor de Jerusalém.

20Do not so, but be counselled by me: for how many are the adversities of Sion? be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem.

21Pois vês que o nosso santuário está desolado, o nosso altar derribado, o nosso templo destruído;

21For thou seest that our sanctuary is laid waste, our altar broken down, our temple destroyed;

22O nosso saltério jaz por terra, o nosso cântico foi emudecido, o nosso regozijo cessou, a luz do nosso candelabro se apagou, a arca da nossa aliança foi saqueada, as nossas coisas sagradas foram profanadas, e o nome que sobre nós foi invocado está quase desonrado; nossos filhos foram envergonhados, nossos sacerdotes queimados, nossos levitas levados para o cativeiro, nossas virgens desonradas e nossas mulheres violadas; nossos homens justos foram levados, nossos pequeninos destruídos, nossos jovens escravizados e nossos valentes tornaram-se fracos;

22Our psaltery is laid on the ground, our song is put to silence, our rejoicing is at an end, the light of our candlestick is put out, the ark of our covenant is spoiled, our holy things are defiled, and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned: our children are put to shame, our priests are burnt, our Levites are gone into captivity, our virgins are defiled, and our wives ravished; our righteous men carried away, our little ones destroyed, our young men are brought in bondage, and our strong men are become weak;

23E, o que é o maior de tudo, o selo de Sião perdeu agora a sua glória, pois foi entregue nas mãos dos que nos aborrecem.

23And, which is the greatest of all, the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour; for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us.

24E, portanto, sacode a tua grande tristeza e afasta a multidão de dores, para que o Poderoso te seja misericordioso outra vez, e o Altíssimo te dê alívio e descanso dos teus trabalhos.

24And therefore shake off thy great heaviness, and put away the multitude of sorrows, that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again, and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour.

25E sucedeu que, enquanto eu falava com ela, eis que o seu rosto subitamente resplandeceu em extremo, e o seu semblante refulgiu, de modo que tive medo dela e ponderava o que seria aquilo.

25And it came to pass while I was talking with her, behold, her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly, and her countenance glistered, so that I was afraid of her, and mused what it might be.

26E eis que de repente ela soltou um grande grito, mui terrível, de maneira que a terra tremeu com o clamor da mulher.

26And, behold, suddenly she made a great cry very fearful: so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman.

27E olhei, e eis que a mulher já não me aparecia mais, mas estava ali uma cidade edificada, e um lugar espaçoso mostrava-se desde os fundamentos; então temi, e clamei em alta voz, dizendo:

27And I looked, and, behold, the woman appeared unto me no more, but there was a city builded, and a large place shewed itself from the foundations: then was I afraid, and cried with a loud voice, and said,

28Onde está o anjo Uriel, que veio a mim no princípio? pois ele me fez cair em muitos êxtases, e o meu fim se tornou em corrupção, e a minha oração em opróbrio.

28Where is Uriel the angel, who came unto me at the first? for he hath caused me to fall into many trances, and mine end is turned into corruption, and my prayer to rebuke.

29E enquanto eu falava estas palavras, eis que ele veio a mim e olhou para mim.

29And as I was speaking these words behold, he came unto me, and looked upon me.

30E eis que eu jazia como morto, e o meu entendimento me fora tirado; e ele me tomou pela mão direita, confortou-me, pôs-me de pé e disse-me:

30And, lo, I lay as one that had been dead, and mine understanding was taken from me: and he took me by the right hand, and comforted me, and set me upon my feet, and said unto me,

31Que tens tu? e por que estás tão inquieto? e por que se turbou o teu entendimento e os pensamentos do teu coração?

31What aileth thee? and why art thou so disquieted? and why is thine understanding troubled, and the thoughts of thine heart?

32E eu disse: Porque me desamparaste; e contudo procedi segundo as tuas palavras, e fui para o campo, e eis que vi, e ainda vejo, o que não sou capaz de exprimir.

32And I said, Because thou hast forsaken me, and yet I did according to thy words, and I went into the field, and, lo, I have seen, and yet see, that I am not able to express.

33E ele me disse: Põe-te de pé varonilmente, e eu te aconselharei.

33And he said unto me, Stand up manfully, and I will advise thee.

34Então disse eu: Fala em mim, senhor meu; somente não me desampares, para que eu não morra frustrado da minha esperança.

34Then said I, Speak on, my lord, in me; only forsake me not, lest I die frustrate of my hope.

35Pois vi o que não conhecia e ouço o que não sei.

35For I have seen that I knew not, and hear that I do not know.

36Ou está enganado o meu sentido, ou a minha alma está sonhando?

36Or is my sense deceived, or my soul in a dream?

37Agora, pois, rogo-te que expliques ao teu servo esta visão.

37Now therefore I beseech thee that thou wilt shew thy servant of this vision.

38Ele me respondeu então, e disse: Ouve-me, e eu te instruirei, e te direi por que tens medo; pois o Altíssimo te revelará muitos segredos.

38He answered me then, and said, Hear me, and I shall inform thee, and tell thee wherefore thou art afraid: for the Highest will reveal many secret things unto thee.

39Ele viu que o teu caminho é reto, porquanto continuamente te entristeces pelo teu povo e fazes grande lamentação por Sião.

39He hath seen that thy way is right: for that thou sorrowest continually for thy people, and makest great lamentation for Sion.

40Este, pois, é o significado da visão que viste ultimamente:

40This therefore is the meaning of the vision which thou lately sawest:

41Viste uma mulher que chorava, e começaste a consolá-la;

41Thou sawest a woman mourning, and thou begannest to comfort her:

42Mas agora já não vês a semelhança da mulher, mas apareceu-te uma cidade edificada.

42But now seest thou the likeness of the woman no more, but there appeared unto thee a city builded.

43E quanto ao que ela te disse sobre a morte do seu filho, esta é a explicação:

43And whereas she told thee of the death of her son, this is the solution:

44Esta mulher que viste é Sião; e quanto àquela que vês como uma cidade edificada,

44This woman, whom thou sawest is Sion: and whereas she said unto thee, even she whom thou seest as a city builded,

45Quanto ao ter ela dito que esteve estéril trinta anos, são estes os trinta anos em que não houve nela oblação.

45Whereas, I say, she said unto thee, that she hath been thirty years barren: those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her.

46Mas passados trinta anos Salomão edificou a cidade e ofereceu oblações; e então a estéril deu à luz um filho.

46But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings: and then bare the barren a son.

47E quanto a ter-te dito que o criou com trabalho, essa foi a habitação em Jerusalém.

47And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour: that was the dwelling in Jerusalem.

48Mas quanto ao ter-te dito que o seu filho, ao entrar na câmara nupcial, caiu e morreu, foi esta a destruição que sobreveio a Jerusalém.

48But whereas she said unto thee, That my son coming into his marriage chamber happened to have a fail, and died: this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem.

49E eis que viste a sua semelhança, e porque ela chorava por seu filho começaste a consolá-la; e destas coisas que sucederam, estas te deviam ser reveladas.

49And, behold, thou sawest her likeness, and because she mourned for her son, thou begannest to comfort her: and of these things which have chanced, these are to be opened unto thee.

50Pois agora o Altíssimo vê que te afliges com sinceridade e sofres de todo o teu coração por ela; por isso te mostrou o resplendor da sua glória e a formosura da sua beleza.

50For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly, and sufferest from thy whole heart for her, so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory, and the comeliness of her beauty:

51E por isso te mandei permanecer no campo onde não havia casa edificada;

51And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded:

52Porque sabia que o Altíssimo te mostraria isto.

52For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee.

53Portanto, mandei-te ir para o campo, onde não havia fundamento de edificação alguma.

53Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field, where no foundation of any building was.

54Pois no lugar em que o Altíssimo começa a mostrar a sua cidade, nenhuma obra de homem pode subsistir.

54For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city, there can no man's building be able to stand.

55E por isso não temas, nem se espavente o teu coração, mas entra e contempla a beleza e a grandeza do edifício, tanto quanto os teus olhos puderem ver;

55And therefore fear not, let not thine heart be affrighted, but go thy way in, and see the beauty and greatness of the building, as much as thine eyes be able to see:

56E depois ouvirás tanto quanto os teus ouvidos puderem compreender.

56And then shalt thou hear as much as thine ears may comprehend.

57Pois és bem-aventurado sobre muitos outros, e és chamado para junto do Altíssimo, e assim são poucos.

57For thou art blessed above many other, and art called with the Highest; and so are but few.

58Mas amanhã à noite permanecerás aqui;

58But to morrow at night thou shalt remain here;

59E assim o Altíssimo te mostrará visões das coisas excelsas que o Altíssimo fará aos que habitam sobre a terra nos últimos dias. Assim dormi aquela noite e outra, como ele me ordenara.

59And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the high things, which the most High will do unto them that dwell upon the earth in the last days. So I slept that night and another, like as he commanded me.
