4 Esdras 16

1Ai de ti, Babilônia e Ásia! ai de ti, Egito e Síria!

1Woe be unto thee, Babylon, and Asia! woe be unto thee, Egypt and Syria!

2Cingi-vos de sacos e de panos de crina, lamentai os vossos filhos e entristecei-vos; pois a vossa destruição está às portas.

2Gird up yourselves with cloths of sack and hair, bewail your children, and be sorry; for your destruction is at hand.

3A espada é enviada sobre vós, e quem a fará voltar?

3A sword is sent upon you, and who may turn it back?

4O fogo é enviado entre vós, e quem o apagará?

4A fire is sent among you, and who may quench it?

5Pragas são enviadas sobre vós, e quem é aquele que as afugentará?

5Plagues are sent unto you, and what is he that may drive them away?

6Acaso pode algum homem afugentar um leão faminto na floresta? ou poderá alguém apagar o fogo no restolho, quando já começou a arder?

6May any man drive away an hungry lion in the wood? or may any one quench the fire in stubble, when it hath begun to burn?

7Poderá alguém fazer voltar a flecha que foi disparada por um arqueiro valente?

7May one turn again the arrow that is shot of a strong archer?

8O Senhor poderoso envia as pragas, e quem é o que as pode afugentar?

8The mighty Lord sendeth the plagues and who is he that can drive them away?

9Um fogo sairá da sua ira, e quem é o que o poderá apagar?

9A fire shall go forth from his wrath, and who is he that may quench it?

10Ele lançará relâmpagos, e quem não temerá? ele trovejará, e quem não terá pavor?

10He shall cast lightnings, and who shall not fear? he shall thunder, and who shall not be afraid?

11O Senhor ameaçará, e quem não será totalmente feito em pó na sua presença?

11The Lord shall threaten, and who shall not be utterly beaten to powder at his presence?

12A terra estremece, e os seus fundamentos; o mar se levanta com ondas desde o abismo, e as suas ondas são agitadas, e também os seus peixes, perante o Senhor e diante da glória do seu poder;

12The earth quaketh, and the foundations thereof; the sea ariseth up with waves from the deep, and the waves of it are troubled, and the fishes thereof also, before the Lord, and before the glory of his power:

13Pois forte é a sua destra que entesa o arco, e as suas flechas que dispara são agudas, e não errarão o alvo quando começarem a ser atiradas aos confins do mundo.

13For strong is his right hand that bendeth the bow, his arrows that he shooteth are sharp, and shall not miss, when they begin to be shot into the ends of the world.

14Eis que as pragas são enviadas e não voltarão, até que venham sobre a terra.

14Behold, the plagues are sent, and shall not return again, until they come upon the earth.

15O fogo está aceso e não se apagará, até que consuma os fundamentos da terra.

15The fire is kindled, and shall not be put out, till it consume the foundation of the earth.

16Como a flecha que é disparada por um arqueiro valente não volta para trás, assim também as pragas que forem enviadas sobre a terra não voltarão atrás.

16Like as an arrow which is shot of a mighty archer returneth not backward: even so the plagues that shall be sent upon earth shall not return again.

17Ai de mim! ai de mim! quem me livrará naqueles dias?

17Woe is me! woe is me! who will deliver me in those days?

18O princípio das dores e dos grandes prantos; o princípio da fome e da grande mortandade; o princípio das guerras, e os poderes estarão em temor; o princípio dos males! que farei eu quando estes males vierem?

18The beginning of sorrows and great mournings; the beginning of famine and great death; the beginning of wars, and the powers shall stand in fear; the beginning of evils! what shall I do when these evils shall come?

19Eis que a fome e a peste, a tribulação e a angústia são enviadas como açoites para emenda.

19Behold, famine and plague, tribulation and anguish, are sent as scourges for amendment.

20Mas por todas estas coisas eles não se converterão da sua maldade, nem estarão sempre lembrados dos açoites.

20But for all these things they shall not turn from their wickedness, nor be always mindful of the scourges.

21Eis que os mantimentos estarão tão baratos sobre a terra, que eles pensarão estar em boa situação; e precisamente então crescerão os males sobre a terra: a espada, a fome e grande confusão.

21Behold, victuals shall be so good cheap upon earth, that they shall think themselves to be in good case, and even then shall evils grow upon earth, sword, famine, and great confusion.

22Pois muitos dos que habitam sobre a terra perecerão de fome; e aos outros, que escaparem da fome, a espada os destruirá.

22For many of them that dwell upon earth shall perish of famine; and the other, that escape the hunger, shall the sword destroy.

23E os mortos serão lançados fora como esterco, e não haverá quem os conforte; pois a terra ficará desolada e as cidades serão derribadas.

23And the dead shall be cast out as dung, and there shall be no man to comfort them: for the earth shall be wasted, and the cities shall be cast down.

24Nenhum homem restará para lavrar a terra e para semeá-la.

24There shall be no man left to till the earth, and to sow it

25As árvores darão frutos, e quem os colherá?

25The trees shall give fruit, and who shall gather them?

26As uvas amadurecerão, e quem as pisará? pois todos os lugares estarão desolados de homens;

26The grapes shall ripen, and who shall tread them? for all places shall be desolate of men:

27De sorte que um homem desejará ver outro e ouvir a sua voz.

27So that one man shall desire to see another, and to hear his voice.

28Pois de uma cidade restarão dez, e dois do campo, os quais se esconderão nos bosques espessos e nas fendas das rochas.

28For of a city there shall be ten left, and two of the field, which shall hide themselves in the thick groves, and in the clefts of the rocks.

29Como num olival em cada árvore são deixadas três ou quatro azeitonas;

29As in an orchard of Olives upon every tree there are left three or four olives;

30Ou como quando se vindima uma vinha, restam alguns cachos aos que diligentemente buscam pela vinha;

30Or as when a vineyard is gathered, there are left some clusters of them that diligently seek through the vineyard:

31Assim naqueles dias serão deixados três ou quatro pelos que vasculharem as suas casas com a espada.

31Even so in those days there shall be three or four left by them that search their houses with the sword.

32E a terra será deixada desolada, e os seus campos envelhecerão, e os seus caminhos e todas as suas veredas se encherão de espinhos, porque nenhum homem transitará por eles.

32And the earth shall be laid waste, and the fields thereof shall wax old, and her ways and all her paths shall grow full of thorns, because no man shall travel therethrough.

33As virgens prantearão, não tendo noivos; as mulheres prantearão, não tendo maridos; suas filhas prantearão, não tendo ajudadores.

33The virgins shall mourn, having no bridegrooms; the women shall mourn, having no husbands; their daughters shall mourn, having no helpers.

34Nas guerras serão destruídos os seus noivos, e os seus maridos perecerão de fome.

34In the wars shall their bridegrooms be destroyed, and their husbands shall perish of famine.

35Ouvi agora estas coisas e entendei-as, vós servos do Senhor.

35Hear now these things and understand them, ye servants of the Lord.

36Eis a palavra do Senhor, recebei-a; não creiais nos deuses dos quais o Senhor falou.

36Behold, the word of the Lord, receive it: believe not the gods of whom the Lord spake.

37Eis que as pragas se aproximam e não tardam.

37Behold, the plagues draw nigh, and are not slack.

38Como a mulher grávida que no nono mês dá à luz o seu filho, e faltando duas ou três horas para o seu parto grandes dores cercam o seu ventre, as quais dores, quando a criança sai, não cessam um só instante;

38As when a woman with child in the ninth month bringeth forth her son, with two or three hours of her birth great pains compass her womb, which pains, when the child cometh forth, they slack not a moment:

39Assim também não tardarão as pragas a vir sobre a terra, e o mundo pranteará, e dores sobrevirão sobre ele de todos os lados.

39Even so shall not the plagues be slack to come upon the earth, and the world shall mourn, and sorrows shall come upon it on every side.

40Ó povo meu, ouve a minha palavra: aparelhai-vos para a peleja, e naqueles males sede como peregrinos sobre a terra.

40O my people, hear my word: make you ready to thy battle, and in those evils be even as pilgrims upon the earth.

41O que vende, seja como o que foge; e o que compra, como o que há de perder;

41He that selleth, let him be as he that fleeth away: and he that buyeth, as one that will lose:

42O que negocia, como o que não tira proveito disso; e o que edifica, como o que não há de habitar nela;

42He that occupieth merchandise, as he that hath no profit by it: and he that buildeth, as he that shall not dwell therein:

43O que semeia, como o que não há de ceifar; assim também o que planta a vinha, como o que não há de colher as uvas;

43He that soweth, as if he should not reap: so also he that planteth the vineyard, as he that shall not gather the grapes:

44Os que se casam, como os que não hão de ter filhos; e os que não se casam, como os viúvos.

44They that marry, as they that shall get no children; and they that marry not, as the widowers.

45E, portanto, os que trabalham, em vão trabalham;

45And therefore they that labour labour in vain:

46Pois estranhos colherão os seus frutos, e despojarão os seus bens, derribarão as suas casas e levarão cativos os seus filhos; pois em cativeiro e fome gerarão filhos.

46For strangers shall reap their fruits, and spoil their goods, overthrow their houses, and take their children captives, for in captivity and famine shall they get children.

47E os que comerciam com roubo, quanto mais adornam as suas cidades, as suas casas, as suas possessões e as suas próprias pessoas,

47And they that occupy their merchandise with robbery, the more they deck their cities, their houses, their possessions, and their own persons:

48Tanto mais me indignarei contra eles pelo seu pecado, diz o Senhor.

48The more will I be angry with them for their sin, saith the Lord.

49Como a meretriz inveja a mulher honesta e mui virtuosa;

49Like as a whore envieth a right honest and virtuous woman:

50Assim a justiça aborrecerá a iniquidade, quando esta se adornar, e a acusará em sua presença, quando vier Aquele que defende o que diligentemente esquadrinha todo pecado sobre a terra.

50So shall righteousness hate iniquity, when she decketh herself, and shall accuse her to her face, when he cometh that shall defend him that diligently searcheth out every sin upon earth.

51E, portanto, não sejais semelhantes a ela, nem às suas obras.

51And therefore be ye not like thereunto, nor to the works thereof.

52Pois ainda um pouco, e a iniquidade será tirada da terra, e a justiça reinará entre vós.

52For yet a little, and iniquity shall be taken away out of the earth, and righteousness shall reign among you.

53Não diga o pecador que não pecou; pois Deus queimará brasas de fogo sobre a sua cabeça, daquele que disser perante o Senhor Deus e a sua glória: Não pequei.

53Let not the sinner say that he hath not sinned: for God shall burn coals of fire upon his head, which saith before the Lord God and his glory, I have not sinned.

54Eis que o Senhor conhece todas as obras dos homens, as suas imaginações, os seus pensamentos e os seus corações;

54Behold, the Lord knoweth all the works of men, their imaginations, their thoughts, and their hearts:

55O qual disse apenas uma palavra: Faça-se a terra; e foi feita: Faça-se o céu; e foi criado.

55Which spake but the word, Let the earth be made; and it was made: Let the heaven be made; and it was created.

56Pela sua palavra foram feitas as estrelas, e ele conhece o número delas.

56In his word were the stars made, and he knoweth the number of them.

57Ele esquadrinha o abismo e os seus tesouros; mediu o mar e o que nele se contém.

57He searcheth the deep, and the treasures thereof; he hath measured the sea, and what it containeth.

58Ele encerrou o mar no meio das águas, e com a sua palavra suspendeu a terra sobre as águas.

58He hath shut the sea in the midst of the waters, and with his word hath he hanged the earth upon the waters.

59Ele estende os céus como uma abóbada; sobre as águas os fundou.

59He spreadeth out the heavens like a vault; upon the waters hath he founded it.

60No deserto fez fontes de água, e lagoas sobre os cumes dos montes, para que as correntes descessem das altas rochas a regar a terra.

60In the desert hath he made springs of water, and pools upon the tops of the mountains, that the floods might pour down from the high rocks to water the earth.

61Ele fez o homem e pôs o seu coração no meio do corpo, e deu-lhe fôlego, vida e entendimento,

61He made man, and put his heart in the midst of the body, and gave him breath, life, and understanding.

62Sim, e o Espírito de Deus Todo-Poderoso, que fez todas as coisas e esquadrinha todas as coisas ocultas nos segredos da terra;

62Yea and the Spirit of Almighty God, which made all things, and searcheth out all hidden things in the secrets of the earth,

63Certamente ele conhece os vossos desígnios e o que pensais nos vossos corações, mesmo aqueles que pecam e desejam encobrir o seu pecado.

63Surely he knoweth your inventions, and what ye think in your hearts, even them that sin, and would hide their sin.

64Portanto, o Senhor esquadrinhou com exatidão todas as vossas obras, e vos exporá à vergonha.

64Therefore hath the Lord exactly searched out all your works, and he will put you all to shame.

65E quando os vossos pecados forem manifestados, ficareis envergonhados perante os homens, e os vossos próprios pecados serão os vossos acusadores naquele dia.

65And when your sins are brought forth, ye shall be ashamed before men, and your own sins shall be your accusers in that day.

66Que fareis vós? ou como encobrireis os vossos pecados diante de Deus e dos seus anjos?

66What will ye do? or how will ye hide your sins before God and his angels?

67Eis que Deus mesmo é o juiz; temei-o; deixai os vossos pecados e esquecei as vossas iniquidades, para nunca mais vos embaraçardes com elas; e assim Deus vos guiará e vos livrará de toda tribulação.

67Behold, God himself is the judge, fear him: leave off from your sins, and forget your iniquities, to meddle no more with them for ever: so shall God lead you forth, and deliver you from all trouble.

68Pois eis que o furor ardente de uma grande multidão se acendeu sobre vós, e levarão alguns de vós, e alimentar-vos-ão com o que foi oferecido aos ídolos, estando ociosos.

68For, behold, the burning wrath of a great multitude is kindled over you, and they shall take away certain of you, and feed you, being idle, with things offered unto idols.

69E os que consentirem com eles serão tidos em escárnio e em opróbrio, e pisados aos pés.

69And they that consent unto them shall be had in derision and in reproach, and trodden under foot.

70Pois haverá em todo lugar e nas cidades vizinhas uma grande insurreição sobre os que temem o Senhor.

70For there shall be in every place, and in the next cities, a great insurrection upon those that fear the Lord.

71Eles serão como loucos, não poupando a ninguém, mas ainda espoliando e destruindo os que temem o Senhor.

71They shall be like mad men, sparing none, but still spoiling and destroying those that fear the Lord.

72Pois devastarão e despojarão os seus bens, e os lançarão fora das suas casas.

72For they shall waste and take away their goods, and cast them out of their houses.

73Então serão conhecidos os que são os meus escolhidos, e serão provados como o ouro no fogo.

73Then shall they be known, who are my chosen; and they shall be tried as the gold in the fire.

74Ouvi, ó meus amados, diz o Senhor: eis que os dias de tribulação estão às portas, mas eu vos livrarei deles.

74Hear, O ye my beloved, saith the Lord: behold, the days of trouble are at hand, but I will deliver you from the same.

75Não temais, nem duvideis; pois Deus é o vosso guia,

75Be ye not afraid neither doubt; for God is your guide,

76E o guia daqueles que guardam os meus mandamentos e preceitos, diz o Senhor Deus; não vos façam os vossos pecados curvar para baixo, nem se levantem as vossas iniquidades.

76And the guide of them who keep my commandments and precepts, saith the Lord God: let not your sins weigh you down, and let not your iniquities lift up themselves.

77Ai dos que estão atados com os seus pecados e cobertos com as suas iniquidades, como o campo é coberto de sarças e a sua vereda coberta de espinhos, de modo que nenhum homem pode transitar por ela!

77Woe be unto them that are bound with their sins, and covered with their iniquities like as a field is covered over with bushes, and the path thereof covered with thorns, that no man may travel through!

78É deixado abandonado e lançado no fogo para ser totalmente consumido.

78It is left undressed, and is cast into the fire to be consumed therewith.
