4 Esdras 3

1No trigésimo ano após a ruína da cidade, estava eu em Babilônia, e jazia perturbado sobre a minha cama, e os meus pensamentos subiam ao meu coração:

1In the thirtieth year after the ruin of the city I was in Babylon, and lay troubled upon my bed, and my thoughts came up over my heart:

2Porque vi a desolação de Sião e a opulência dos que habitavam em Babilônia.

2For I saw the desolation of Sion, and the wealth of them that dwelt at Babylon.

3E o meu espírito se comoveu em extremo, de maneira que comecei a proferir palavras cheias de temor ao Altíssimo, e disse:

3And my spirit was sore moved, so that I began to speak words full of fear to the most High, and said,

4Ó Senhor soberano, tu falaste no princípio, quando formaste a terra, e isso por ti só, e ordenaste ao povo,

4O Lord, who bearest rule, thou spakest at the beginning, when thou didst plant the earth, and that thyself alone, and commandedst the people,

5E deste a Adão um corpo sem vida, o qual era obra das tuas mãos, e assopraste nele o fôlego da vida, e ele se tornou vivente diante de ti.

5And gavest a body unto Adam without soul, which was the workmanship of thine hands, and didst breathe into him the breath of life, and he was made living before thee.

6E tu o introduziste no paraíso, que a tua destra havia plantado antes que a terra existisse.

6And thou leadest him into paradise, which thy right hand had planted, before ever the earth came forward.

7E a ele deste o mandamento de amar o teu caminho; o qual ele transgrediu, e imediatamente determinaste a morte nele e nas suas gerações, das quais procederam nações, tribos, povos e famílias incontáveis.

7And unto him thou gavest commandment to love thy way: which he transgressed, and immediately thou appointedst death in him and in his generations, of whom came nations, tribes, people, and kindreds, out of number.

8E cada povo andava segundo a sua própria vontade, e praticava coisas espantosas perante ti, e desprezava os teus mandamentos.

8And every people walked after their own will, and did wonderful things before thee, and despised thy commandments.

9E outra vez, no decorrer do tempo, trouxeste o dilúvio sobre os que habitavam no mundo e os destruíste.

9And again in process of time thou broughtest the flood upon those that dwelt in the world, and destroyedst them.

10E sucedeu com cada um deles que, assim como a morte veio sobre Adão, assim também o dilúvio veio sobre estes.

10And it came to pass in every of them, that as death was to Adam, so was the flood to these.

11Todavia, deixaste a um deles, a saber, a Noé com a sua casa, do qual procederam todos os homens justos.

11Nevertheless one of them thou leftest, namely, Noah with his household, of whom came all righteous men.

12E aconteceu que, quando os que habitavam sobre a terra começaram a multiplicar-se, e geraram muitos filhos, e se tornaram um grande povo, começaram de novo a ser mais ímpios do que os primeiros.

12And it happened, that when they that dwelt upon the earth began to multiply, and had gotten them many children, and were a great people, they began again to be more ungodly than the first.

13Ora, vivendo eles tão impiamente diante de ti, escolheste para ti um homem dentre eles, cujo nome era Abraão.

13Now when they lived so wickedly before thee, thou didst choose thee a man from among them, whose name was Abraham.

14A este amaste, e somente a ele revelaste a tua vontade;

14Him thou lovedst, and unto him only thou shewedst thy will:

15E fizeste com ele uma aliança eterna, prometendo-lhe que nunca desampararias a sua descendência.

15And madest an everlasting covenant with him, promising him that thou wouldest never forsake his seed.

16E deste-lhe a Isaque, e a Isaque deste também a Jacó e a Esaú. Quanto a Jacó, tu o escolheste para ti e rejeitaste a Esaú; e assim Jacó se tornou uma grande multidão.

16And unto him thou gavest Isaac, and unto Isaac also thou gavest Jacob and Esau. As for Jacob, thou didst choose him to thee, and put by Esau: and so Jacob became a great multitude.

17E aconteceu que, conduzindo tu a sua semente para fora do Egito, os levaste ao monte Sinai.

17And it came to pass, that when thou leadest his seed out of Egypt, thou broughtest them up to the mount Sinai.

18E, inclinando os céus, firmaste a terra, abalaste o mundo inteiro, fizeste estremecer os abismos e perturbaste os homens daquela era.

18And bowing the heavens, thou didst set fast the earth, movedst the whole world, and madest the depths to tremble, and troubledst the men of that age.

19E a tua glória passou por quatro portas, de fogo, de terremoto, de vento e de frio; para que desses a lei à semente de Jacó, e a diligência à geração de Israel.

19And thy glory went through four gates, of fire, and of earthquake, and of wind, and of cold; that thou mightest give the law unto the seed of Jacob, and diligence unto the generation of Israel.

20E contudo não tiraste deles o coração maligno, para que a tua lei produzisse fruto neles.

20And yet tookest thou not away from them a wicked heart, that thy law might bring forth fruit in them.

21Porque o primeiro Adão, trazendo em si um coração maligno, transgrediu e foi vencido; e assim são todos os que dele nasceram.

21For the first Adam bearing a wicked heart transgressed, and was overcome; and so be all they that are born of him.

22Deste modo a fraqueza tornou-se perpétua; e a lei permaneceu no coração do povo juntamente com a malignidade da raiz; de sorte que o bem se apartou e o mal permaneceu.

22Thus infirmity was made permanent; and the law (also) in the heart of the people with the malignity of the root; so that the good departed away, and the evil abode still.

23Assim se passaram os tempos e os anos chegaram ao fim; então suscitaste para ti um servo chamado Davi;

23So the times passed away, and the years were brought to an end: then didst thou raise thee up a servant, called David:

24Ao qual mandaste que edificasse uma cidade ao teu nome, e nela te oferecesse incenso e oblações.

24Whom thou commandedst to build a city unto thy name, and to offer incense and oblations unto thee therein.

25Tendo-se feito isto durante muitos anos, os que habitavam na cidade desampararam-te,

25When this was done many years, then they that inhabited the city forsook thee,

26E em todas as coisas fizeram como Adão e todas as suas gerações haviam feito; porque também eles tinham o coração maligno:

26And in all things did even as Adam and all his generations had done: for they also had a wicked heart:

27E assim entregaste a tua cidade nas mãos dos teus inimigos.

27And so thou gavest thy city over into the hands of thine enemies.

28São porventura melhores as obras dos que habitam em Babilônia, para que por isso tenham o domínio sobre Sião?

28Are their deeds then any better that inhabit Babylon, that they should therefore have the dominion over Sion?

29Pois, quando cheguei ali e vi iniquidades incontáveis, então a minha alma contemplou muitos malfeitores neste trigésimo ano, de modo que o meu coração desmaiou.

29For when I came thither, and had seen impieties without number, then my soul saw many evildoers in this thirtieth year, so that my heart failed me.

30Porque vi como suportas os pecadores e tens poupado os malfeitores; e destruíste o teu povo, e preservaste os teus inimigos, e não deste a entender a razão disto.

30For I have seen how thou sufferest them sinning, and hast spared wicked doers: and hast destroyed thy people, and hast preserved thine enemies, and hast not signified it.

31Não compreendo como este caminho possa ser deixado: são acaso os de Babilônia melhores do que os de Sião?

31I do not remember how this way may be left: Are they then of Babylon better than they of Sion?

32Ou há outro povo que te conheça além de Israel? Ou que geração creu assim nas tuas alianças como Jacó?

32Or is there any other people that knoweth thee beside Israel? or what generation hath so believed thy covenants as Jacob?

33E contudo a sua recompensa não aparece e o seu trabalho não tem fruto; porque andei de um lado para outro entre os gentios, e vejo que transbordam em riquezas e não cuidam dos teus mandamentos.

33And yet their reward appeareth not, and their labour hath no fruit: for I have gone here and there through the heathen, and I see that they flow in wealth, and think not upon thy commandments.

34Pesa, pois, agora na balança as nossas iniquidades e também as dos que habitam no mundo; e assim não se achará o teu nome senão em Israel.

34Weigh thou therefore our wickedness now in the balance, and theirs also that dwell the world; and so shall thy name no where be found but in Israel.

35Ou quando foi que os habitantes da terra não pecaram diante de ti? Ou que povo guardou assim os teus mandamentos?

35Or when was it that they which dwell upon the earth have not sinned in thy sight? or what people have so kept thy commandments?

36Acharás que Israel nominalmente guardou os teus preceitos; mas os gentios, não.

36Thou shalt find that Israel by name hath kept thy precepts; but not the heathen.
