4 Esdras 5

1Todavia, quanto aos sinais, eis que virão dias em que os que habitam sobre a terra serão tomados de grande pavor, e o caminho da verdade estará escondido, e a terra será estéril de fé.

1Nevertheless as coming the tokens, behold, the days shall come, that they which dwell upon earth shall be taken in a great number, and the way of truth shall be hidden, and the land shall be barren of faith.

2Mas a iniquidade se multiplicará acima daquela que agora vês, ou daquela que ouviste há muito tempo.

2But iniquity shall be increased above that which now thou seest, or that thou hast heard long ago.

3E a terra que agora vês ter raiz, vê-la-ás subitamente desolada.

3And the land, that thou seest now to have root, shalt thou see wasted suddenly.

4Porém, se o Altíssimo te conceder vida, verás depois da terceira trombeta que o sol subitamente resplandecerá de noite, e a lua três vezes de dia;

4But if the most High grant thee to live, thou shalt see after the third trumpet that the sun shall suddenly shine again in the night, and the moon thrice in the day:

5E sangue gotejará da madeira, e a pedra dará a sua voz, e os povos serão perturbados;

5And blood shall drop out of wood, and the stone shall give his voice, and the people shall be troubled:

6E reinará aquele a quem os habitantes da terra não esperam, e as aves voarão juntas em debandada;

6And even he shall rule, whom they look not for that dwell upon the earth, and the fowls shall take their flight away together:

7E o mar de Sodoma lançará peixes, e fará estrondo à noite, o qual muitos não conheceram; contudo todos ouvirão a sua voz.

7And the Sodomitish sea shall cast out fish, and make a noise in the night, which many have not known: but they shall all hear the voice thereof.

8Haverá também confusão em muitos lugares, e o fogo será amiúde lançado de novo, e os animais ferozes mudarão de lugares, e mulheres menstruadas darão à luz monstros;

8There shall be a confusion also in many places, and the fire shall be oft sent out again, and the wild beasts shall change their places, and menstruous women shall bring forth monsters:

9E águas salgadas se acharão nas doces, e todos os amigos se destruirão uns aos outros; então o engenho se esconderá, e o entendimento se recolherá à sua câmara secreta,

9And salt waters shall be found in the sweet, and all friends shall destroy one another; then shall wit hide itself, and understanding withdraw itself into his secret chamber,

10E será buscado por muitos, e contudo não será achado; então se multiplicará a injustiça e a incontinência sobre a terra.

10And shall be sought of many, and yet not be found: then shall unrighteousness and incontinency be multiplied upon earth.

11Uma terra também perguntará à outra, e dirá: Passou por ti a justiça que faz o homem justo? E ela responderá: Não.

11One land also shall ask another, and say, Is righteousness that maketh a man righteous gone through thee? And it shall say, No.

12No mesmo tempo os homens esperarão, porém nada alcançarão; trabalharão, mas os seus caminhos não prosperarão.

12At the same time shall men hope, but nothing obtain: they shall labour, but their ways shall not prosper.

13Para te mostrar tais sinais tenho permissão; e, se orares outra vez, e chorares como agora, e jejuares sete dias, ouvirás coisas ainda maiores.

13To shew thee such tokens I have leave; and if thou wilt pray again, and weep as now, and fast even days, thou shalt hear yet greater things.

14Então despertei, e um temor extremo traspassou todo o meu corpo, e a minha mente se perturbou, de modo que desfaleceu.

14Then I awaked, and an extreme fearfulness went through all my body, and my mind was troubled, so that it fainted.

15Mas o anjo que viera falar comigo susteve-me, confortou-me e pôs-me de pé.

15So the angel that was come to talk with me held me, comforted me, and set me up upon my feet.

16E na segunda noite sucedeu que Salatiel, chefe do povo, veio a mim, dizendo: Onde estiveste? e por que está tão abatido o teu semblante?

16And in the second night it came to pass, that Salathiel the captain of the people came unto me, saying, Where hast thou been? and why is thy countenance so heavy?

17Não sabes que Israel te está confiado na terra do seu cativeiro?

17Knowest thou not that Israel is committed unto thee in the land of their captivity?

18Levanta-te, pois, e come pão, e não nos desampares, como o pastor que deixa o seu rebanho nas mãos de lobos cruéis.

18Up then, and eat bread, and forsake us not, as the shepherd that leaveth his flock in the hands of cruel wolves.

19Então lhe disse: Vai-te de mim, e não te chegues a mim. E ele ouviu o que eu disse, e retirou-se de mim.

19Then said I unto him, Go thy ways from me, and come not nigh me. And he heard what I said, and went from me.

20E assim jejuei sete dias, lamentando e chorando, como me ordenara o anjo Uriel.

20And so I fasted seven days, mourning and weeping, like as Uriel the angel commanded me.

21E depois de sete dias sucedeu que os pensamentos do meu coração foram de novo mui pesados para mim,

21And after seven days so it was, that the thoughts of my heart were very grievous unto me again,

22E a minha alma recobrou o espírito de entendimento, e comecei a falar outra vez com o Altíssimo,

22And my soul recovered the spirit of understanding, and I began to talk with the most High again,

23E disse: Ó Soberano Senhor, de toda a floresta da terra e de todas as suas árvores escolheste para ti uma só videira;

23And said, O Lord that bearest rule, of every wood of the earth, and of all the trees thereof, thou hast chosen thee one only vine:

24E de todas as terras de todo o mundo escolheste para ti uma só cova, e de todas as suas flores um só lírio;

24And of all lands of the whole world thou hast chosen thee one pit: and of all the flowers thereof one lily:

25E de todos os abismos do mar encheste para ti um só rio, e de todas as cidades edificadas santificaste Sião para ti;

25And of all the depths of the sea thou hast filled thee one river: and of all builded cities thou hast hallowed Sion unto thyself:

26E de todas as aves criadas nomeaste para ti uma só pomba, e de todo o gado feito proveste para ti uma só ovelha;

26And of all the fowls that are created thou hast named thee one dove: and of all the cattle that are made thou hast provided thee one sheep:

27E entre todas as multidões de povos adquiriste para ti um só povo; e a este povo, a quem amaste, deste uma lei que é aprovada por todos.

27And among all the multitudes of people thou hast gotten thee one people: and unto this people, whom thou lovedst, thou gavest a law that is approved of all.

28E agora, ó Senhor, por que entregaste este único povo a muitos? e sobre uma só raiz preparaste outros, e por que espalhaste o teu único povo entre muitos?

28And now, O Lord, why hast thou given this one people over unto many? and upon the one root hast thou prepared others, and why hast thou scattered thy only one people among many?

29E aqueles que contradiziam as tuas promessas, e não criam nas tuas alianças, os pisaram aos pés.

29And they which did gainsay thy promises, and believed not thy covenants, have trodden them down.

30Se tanto aborreces o teu povo, todavia deverias castigá-lo com as tuas próprias mãos.

30If thou didst so much hate thy people, yet shouldest thou punish them with thine own hands.

31Ora, tendo eu proferido estas palavras, o anjo que viera a mim na noite anterior foi enviado a mim,

31Now when I had spoken these words, the angel that came to me the night afore was sent unto me,

32E disse-me: Ouve-me, e eu te instruirei; atenta para o que te digo, e eu te direi mais.

32And said unto me, Hear me, and I will instruct thee; hearken to the thing that I say, and I shall tell thee more.

33E eu disse: Fala, meu Senhor. Então ele me disse: Estás mui perturbado de espírito por amor de Israel; acaso amas tu esse povo mais do que Aquele que o fez?

33And I said, Speak on, my Lord. Then said he unto me, Thou art sore troubled in mind for Israel's sake: lovest thou that people better than he that made them?

34E eu disse: Não, Senhor; mas com mui grande dor tenho falado, porque as minhas entranhas se afligem a cada hora, enquanto me afadigo por compreender o caminho do Altíssimo e esquadrinhar parte do seu juízo.

34And I said, No, Lord: but of very grief have I spoken: for my reins pain me every hour, while I labour to comprehend the way of the most High, and to seek out part of his judgment.

35E ele me disse: Não podes. E eu disse: Por que, Senhor? para que nasci eu, pois? ou por que não foi o ventre de minha mãe a minha sepultura, a fim de que não visse a aflição de Jacó e o penoso trabalho da linhagem de Israel?

35And he said unto me, Thou canst not. And I said, Wherefore, Lord? whereunto was I born then? or why was not my mother's womb then my grave, that I might not have seen the travail of Jacob, and the wearisome toil of the stock of Israel?

36E ele me disse: Numera-me as coisas que ainda não vieram, ajunta-me as gotas que estão dispersas, torna-me verdes as flores que estão murchas,

36And he said unto me, Number me the things that are not yet come, gather me together the dross that are scattered abroad, make me the flowers green again that are withered,

37Abre-me os lugares que estão fechados, e faze-me sair os ventos que neles estão encerrados, mostra-me a imagem de uma voz; e então eu te declararei o que te afadigas por saber.

37Open me the places that are closed, and bring me forth the winds that in them are shut up, shew me the image of a voice: and then I will declare to thee the thing that thou labourest to know.

38E eu disse: Ó Soberano Senhor, quem pode saber estas coisas senão Aquele cuja morada não é com os homens?

38And I said, O Lord that bearest rule, who may know these things, but he that hath not his dwelling with men?

39Quanto a mim, sou insensato; como poderei, pois, falar destas coisas que me perguntas?

39As for me, I am unwise: how may I then speak of these things whereof thou askest me?

40Então ele me disse: Assim como não podes fazer nenhuma destas coisas que mencionei, do mesmo modo não podes esquadrinhar o meu juízo, nem, no fim, o amor que prometi ao meu povo.

40Then said he unto me, Like as thou canst do none of these things that I have spoken of, even so canst thou not find out my judgment, or in the end the love that I have promised unto my people.

41E eu disse: Eis, ó Senhor, que tu estás perto daqueles que são reservados até o fim; e que farão os que foram antes de mim, ou nós que agora somos, ou os que hão de vir depois de nós?

41And I said, Behold, O Lord, yet art thou nigh unto them that be reserved till the end: and what shall they do that have been before me, or we that be now, or they that shall come after us?

42E ele me disse: Compararei o meu juízo a um anel: assim como não há tardança dos últimos, da mesma sorte não há pressa dos primeiros.

42And he said unto me, I will liken my judgment unto a ring: like as there is no slackness of the last, even so there is no swiftness of the first.

43Respondi, pois, e disse: Não poderias ter feito os que foram feitos, e os que agora são, e os que hão de vir, todos de uma vez, para que mostrasses o teu juízo mais depressa?

43So I answered and said, Couldest thou not make those that have been made, and be now, and that are for to come, at once; that thou mightest shew thy judgment the sooner?

44Então ele me respondeu e disse: A criatura não pode apressar-se mais do que o Criador; nem pode o mundo conter de uma vez aqueles que nele hão de ser criados.

44Then answered he me, and said, The creature may not haste above the maker; neither may the world hold them at once that shall be created therein.

45E eu disse: Como disseste ao teu servo que tu, que dás vida a tudo, deste vida de uma vez à criatura que criaste, e a criatura a sustentou; assim também ela poderia sustentar agora de uma vez os que estão presentes.

45And I said, As thou hast said unto thy servant, that thou, which givest life to all, hast given life at once to the creature that thou hast created, and the creature bare it: even so it might now also bear them that now be present at once.

46E ele me disse: Pergunta à madre de uma mulher, e dize-lhe: Se dás à luz filhos, por que não o fazes juntos, mas um após outro? pede-lhe, pois, que dê à luz dez filhos de uma vez.

46And he said unto me, Ask the womb of a woman, and say unto her, If thou bringest forth children, why dost thou it not together, but one after another? pray her therefore to bring forth ten children at once.

47E eu disse: Ela não pode, mas deve fazê-lo com intervalo de tempo.

47And I said, She cannot: but must do it by distance of time.

48Então me disse: Assim dei a madre da terra àqueles que nela são semeados a seus tempos.

48Then said he unto me, Even so have I given the womb of the earth to those that be sown in it in their times.

49Porque assim como a criança tenra não pode produzir as coisas que pertencem aos idosos, da mesma sorte dispus o mundo que criei.

49For like as a young child may not bring forth the things that belong to the aged, even so have I disposed the world which I created.

50E interroguei, e disse: Visto que agora me abriste o caminho, prosseguirei a falar perante ti; pois a nossa mãe, de quem me disseste que é jovem, aproxima-se agora da velhice.

50And I asked, and said, Seeing thou hast now given me the way, I will proceed to speak before thee: for our mother, of whom thou hast told me that she is young, draweth now nigh unto age.

51Ele me respondeu e disse: Pergunta à mulher que dá à luz, e ela te dirá.

51He answered me, and said, Ask a woman that beareth children, and she shall tell thee.

52Dize-lhe: Por que não são os que agora deste à luz semelhantes aos que foram antes, mas de menor estatura?

52Say unto her, Wherefore are unto they whom thou hast now brought forth like those that were before, but less of stature?

53E ela te responderá: Os que nascem no vigor da mocidade são de uma feição, e os que nascem no tempo da velhice, quando a madre desfalece, são de outra.

53And she shall answer thee, They that be born in the strength of youth are of one fashion, and they that are born in the time of age, when the womb faileth, are otherwise.

54Considera tu, pois, também, como sois de menor estatura do que aqueles que foram antes de vós.

54Consider thou therefore also, how that ye are less of stature than those that were before you.

55E assim os que vierem depois de vós serão menores do que vós, como criaturas que já começam a envelhecer e já passaram do vigor da juventude.

55And so are they that come after you less than ye, as the creatures which now begin to be old, and have passed over the strength of youth.

56Então disse eu: Senhor, peço-te, se achei graça aos teus olhos, mostra ao teu servo por meio de quem visitas a tua criatura.

56Then said I, Lord, I beseech thee, if I have found favour in thy sight, shew thy servant by whom thou visitest thy creature.
