4 Esdras 8

1E ele me respondeu, dizendo: O Altíssimo fez este mundo para muitos, mas o mundo vindouro para poucos.

1And he answered me, saying, The most High hath made this world for many, but the world to come for few.

2Dir-te-ei uma semelhança, Esdras: assim como quando perguntas à terra, ela te dirá que dá muito barro de que se fazem vasos de barro, mas pouco pó de onde vem o ouro; assim é também o curso do presente mundo.

2I will tell thee a similitude, Esdras; As when thou askest the earth, it shall say unto thee, that it giveth much mould whereof earthen vessels are made, but little dust that gold cometh of: even so is the course of this present world.

3Muitos são criados, mas poucos se salvarão.

3There be many created, but few shall be saved.

4Então respondi e disse: Traga, pois, ó minha alma, o entendimento, e devora a sabedoria.

4So answered I and said, Swallow then down, O my soul, understanding, and devour wisdom.

5Porque consentiste em dar ouvidos, e estás disposta a profetizar; pois não tens mais espaço de tempo senão tão somente para viver.

5For thou hast agreed to give ear, and art willing to prophesy: for thou hast no longer space than only to live.

6Ó Senhor, se não permitires ao teu servo que oremos perante ti, e nos deres semente ao coração e cultivo ao nosso entendimento, para que daí provenha fruto, como viverá cada homem que é corrupto e ocupa o lugar de homem?

6O Lord, if thou suffer not thy servant, that we may pray before thee, and thou give us seed unto our heart, and culture to our understanding, that there may come fruit of it; how shall each man live that is corrupt, who beareth the place of a man?

7Porque tu és único, e todos nós somos uma só feitura das tuas mãos, assim como disseste.

7For thou art alone, and we all one workmanship of thine hands, like as thou hast said.

8Pois quando o corpo é formado na madre da mãe, e tu lhe dás membros, a tua criatura é guardada no fogo e na água, e durante nove meses a tua feitura suporta a tua criatura que nela é gerada.

8For when the body is fashioned now in the mother's womb, and thou givest it members, thy creature is preserved in fire and water, and nine months doth thy workmanship endure thy creature which is created in her.

9Mas o que guarda e o que é guardado, ambos serão preservados; e quando chega o tempo, a madre preservada entrega as coisas que nela cresceram.

9But that which keepeth and is kept shall both be preserved: and when the time cometh, the womb preserved delivereth up the things that grew in it.

10Porque mandaste que das partes do corpo, a saber, dos seios, se desse leite, que é o fruto dos seios,

10For thou hast commanded out of the parts of the body, that is to say, out of the breasts, milk to be given, which is the fruit of the breasts,

11A fim de que o que foi formado seja nutrido por um tempo, até que o disponhas para a tua misericórdia.

11That the thing which is fashioned may be nourished for a time, till thou disposest it to thy mercy.

12Tu o criaste com a tua justiça, e o educaste na tua lei, e o corrigiste com o teu juízo.

12Thou broughtest it up with thy righteousness, and nurturedst it in thy law, and reformedst it with thy judgment.

13E hás de mortificá-lo como tua criatura, e vivificá-lo como tua obra.

13And thou shalt mortify it as thy creature, and quicken it as thy work.

14Se, pois, destruíres aquele que com tão grande trabalho foi formado, fácil coisa seria ordenar pelo teu mandamento que o que foi feito fosse preservado.

14If therefore thou shalt destroy him which with so great labour was fashioned, it is an easy thing to be ordained by thy commandment, that the thing which was made might be preserved.

15Agora, pois, ó Senhor, falarei: quanto ao homem em geral, tu o sabes melhor; mas quanto ao teu povo, por cuja causa me entristeço;

15Now therefore, Lord, I will speak; touching man in general, thou knowest best; but touching thy people, for whose sake I am sorry;

16E pela tua herança, por cuja causa pranteio; e por Israel, por quem estou pesaroso; e por Jacó, por cuja causa me angustio;

16And for thine inheritance, for whose cause I mourn; and for Israel, for whom I am heavy; and for Jacob, for whose sake I am troubled;

17Portanto começarei a orar perante ti por mim e por eles; porque vejo as quedas de nós que habitamos na terra.

17Therefore will I begin to pray before thee for myself and for them: for I see the falls of us that dwell in the land.

18Mas ouvi a presteza do juiz que há de vir.

18But I have heard the swiftness of the judge which is to come.

19Ouve, pois, a minha voz, e compreende as minhas palavras, e falarei perante ti. Este é o princípio das palavras de Esdras, antes de ser arrebatado; e disse:

19Therefore hear my voice, and understand my words, and I shall speak before thee. This is the beginning of the words of Esdras, before he was taken up: and I said,

20Ó Senhor, que habitas na eternidade, que contemplas lá do alto as coisas nos céus e no ar;

20O Lord, thou that dwellest in everlastingness which beholdest from above things in the heaven and in the air;

21Cujo trono é inestimável, cuja glória não se pode compreender, diante de quem os exércitos dos anjos estão com tremor;

21Whose throne is inestimable; whose glory may not be comprehended; before whom the hosts of angels stand with trembling,

22Cujo ministério se exerce no vento e no fogo, cuja palavra é verdadeira e cujos ditos são constantes, cujo mandamento é forte e cuja ordenança é terrível;

22Whose service is conversant in wind and fire; whose word is true, and sayings constant; whose commandment is strong, and ordinance fearful;

23Cujo olhar desseca os abismos, e cuja indignação faz derreter os montes, o que a verdade testifica:

23Whose look drieth up the depths, and indignation maketh the mountains to melt away; which the truth witnesseth:

24Ouve a oração do teu servo, e dá ouvidos à petição da tua criatura.

24O hear the prayer of thy servant, and give ear to the petition of thy creature.

25Porque enquanto eu viver falarei, e enquanto tiver entendimento responderei.

25For while I live I will speak, and so long as I have understanding I will answer.

26Ó não olhes para os pecados do teu povo, mas para aqueles que te servem em verdade.

26O look not upon the sins of thy people; but on them which serve thee in truth.

27Não repares nas más maquinações dos gentios, mas no desejo daqueles que guardam os teus testemunhos nas aflições.

27Regard not the wicked inventions of the heathen, but the desire of those that keep thy testimonies in afflictions.

28Não penses naqueles que andaram fingidamente diante de ti, mas lembra-te daqueles que, segundo a tua vontade, conheceram o teu temor.

28Think not upon those that have walked feignedly before thee: but remember them, which according to thy will have known thy fear.

29Não seja a tua vontade destruir aqueles que viveram como animais, mas olha para aqueles que claramente ensinaram a tua lei.

29Let it not be thy will to destroy them which have lived like beasts; but to look upon them that have clearly taught thy law.

30Não te indignes contra aqueles que são julgados piores do que feras, mas ama aqueles que sempre põem a sua confiança na tua justiça e glória.

30Take thou no indignation at them which are deemed worse than beasts; but love them that always put their trust in thy righteousness and glory.

31Porque nós e nossos pais desfalecemos de tais enfermidades; mas por causa de nós, pecadores, serás chamado misericordioso.

31For we and our fathers do languish of such diseases: but because of us sinners thou shalt be called merciful.

32Pois se tens desejo de te compadecer de nós, então serás chamado misericordioso para conosco, a saber, que não temos obras de justiça.

32For if thou hast a desire to have mercy upon us, thou shalt be called merciful, to us namely, that have no works of righteousness.

33Porque os justos, que têm muitas boas obras guardadas contigo, receberão recompensa das suas próprias ações.

33For the just, which have many good works laid up with thee, shall out of their own deeds receive reward.

34Pois que é o homem, para que te indignes contra ele? ou que é a geração corruptível, para que te amargures tanto contra ela?

34For what is man, that thou shouldest take displeasure at him? or what is a corruptible generation, that thou shouldest be so bitter toward it?

35Porque em verdade não há homem entre os nascidos que não tenha obrado impiamente; e entre os fiéis não há ninguém que não tenha errado.

35For in truth them is no man among them that be born, but he hath dealt wickedly; and among the faithful there is none which hath not done amiss.

36Pois nisto, ó Senhor, se manifestará a tua justiça e a tua bondade, se fores misericordioso para com aqueles que não têm a confiança das boas obras.

36For in this, O Lord, thy righteousness and thy goodness shall be declared, if thou be merciful unto them which have not the confidence of good works.

37Então ele me respondeu e disse: Algumas coisas falaste retamente, e segundo as tuas palavras assim será.

37Then answered he me, and said, Some things hast thou spoken aright, and according unto thy words it shall be.

38Porque na verdade não pensarei na disposição daqueles que pecaram antes da morte, antes do juízo, antes da destruição;

38For indeed I will not think on the disposition of them which have sinned before death, before judgment, before destruction:

39Mas alegrar-me-ei com a disposição dos justos, e lembrar-me-ei também da sua peregrinação, e da salvação e da recompensa que hão de ter.

39But I will rejoice over the disposition of the righteous, and I will remember also their pilgrimage, and the salvation, and the reward, that they shall have.

40Assim como falei agora, assim sucederá.

40Like as I have spoken now, so shall it come to pass.

41Porque assim como o lavrador semeia muita semente sobre a terra e planta muitas árvores, e contudo o que é semeado de bom a seu tempo não brota, nem tudo o que é plantado cria raiz; da mesma sorte é dos que são semeados no mundo: não se salvarão todos.

41For as the husbandman soweth much seed upon the ground, and planteth many trees, and yet the thing that is sown good in his season cometh not up, neither doth all that is planted take root: even so is it of them that are sown in the world; they shall not all be saved.

42Respondi então e disse: Se achei graça, deixa-me falar.

42I answered then and said, If I have found grace, let me speak.

43Assim como a semente do lavrador perece se não brotar e não receber a tua chuva a seu tempo, ou se vier chuva demasiada e a corromper;

43Like as the husbandman's seed perisheth, if it come not up, and receive not thy rain in due season; or if there come too much rain, and corrupt it:

44Do mesmo modo perece também o homem, que é formado pelas tuas mãos e é chamado a tua imagem, porque tu és semelhante a ele, por amor de quem fizeste todas as coisas, e o comparaste à semente do lavrador.

44Even so perisheth man also, which is formed with thy hands, and is called thine own image, because thou art like unto him, for whose sake thou hast made all things, and likened him unto the husbandman's seed.

45Não te ires contra nós, mas poupa o teu povo e compadece-te da tua herança; porque és misericordioso para com a tua criatura.

45Be not wroth with us but spare thy people, and have mercy upon thine own inheritance: for thou art merciful unto thy creature.

46Então ele me respondeu e disse: As coisas presentes são para os presentes, e as coisas vindouras para os que hão de vir.

46Then answered he me, and said, Things present are for the present, and things to cometh for such as be to come.

47Porque estás mui longe de poder amar a minha criatura mais do que eu; mas muitas vezes me cheguei a ti e a ela, porém nunca aos injustos.

47For thou comest far short that thou shouldest be able to love my creature more than I: but I have ofttimes drawn nigh unto thee, and unto it, but never to the unrighteous.

48Nisto também és maravilhoso perante o Altíssimo:

48In this also thou art marvellous before the most High:

49Em que te humilhaste, como te convém, e não te julgaste digno de ser muito glorificado entre os justos.

49In that thou hast humbled thyself, as it becometh thee, and hast not judged thyself worthy to be much glorified among the righteous.

50Porque muitas e grandes misérias serão feitas àqueles que nos últimos tempos habitarem no mundo, porque andaram com grande soberba.

50For many great miseries shall be done to them that in the latter time shall dwell in the world, because they have walked in great pride.

51Mas tu compreende por ti mesmo, e busca a glória para aqueles que são semelhantes a ti.

51But understand thou for thyself, and seek out the glory for such as be like thee.

52Porque para vós está aberto o paraíso, plantada está a árvore da vida, preparado está o tempo vindouro, aparelhada está a abundância, edificada está a cidade e concedido o repouso, sim, a perfeita bondade e sabedoria.

52For unto you is paradise opened, the tree of life is planted, the time to come is prepared, plenteousness is made ready, a city is builded, and rest is allowed, yea, perfect goodness and wisdom.

53A raiz do mal está selada longe de vós, a enfermidade e a traça estão escondidas de vós, e a corrupção fugiu para o inferno para ser esquecida;

53The root of evil is sealed up from you, weakness and the moth is hid from you, and corruption is fled into hell to be forgotten:

54As dores passaram, e no fim é mostrado o tesouro da imortalidade.

54Sorrows are passed, and in the end is shewed the treasure of immortality.

55E, portanto, não faças mais perguntas acerca da multidão dos que perecem.

55And therefore ask thou no more questions concerning the multitude of them that perish.

56Porque eles, tendo recebido liberdade, desprezaram o Altíssimo, escarneceram da sua lei e abandonaram os seus caminhos.

56For when they had taken liberty, they despised the most High, thought scorn of his law, and forsook his ways.

57Além disso pisaram aos pés os seus justos,

57Moreover they have trodden down his righteous,

58E disseram no seu coração que não há Deus; e isto sabendo que hão de morrer.

58And said in their heart, that there is no God; yea, and that knowing they must die.

59Porque assim como as coisas sobreditas vos receberão, da mesma sorte a sede e o tormento estão preparados para eles; pois não foi da sua vontade que os homens fossem aniquilados;

59For as the things aforesaid shalt receive you, so thirst and pain are prepared for them: for it was not his will that men should come to nought:

60Mas os próprios que foram criados contaminaram o nome daquele que os fez, e foram ingratos para com aquele que lhes preparou a vida.

60But they which be created have defiled the name of him that made them, and were unthankful unto him which prepared life for them.

61E por isso o meu juízo está agora à mão.

61And therefore is my judgment now at hand.

62Estas coisas não mostrei a todos os homens, mas a ti e a poucos semelhantes a ti. Então respondi e disse:

62These things have I not shewed unto all men, but unto thee, and a few like thee. Then answered I and said,

63Eis, ó Senhor, que agora me mostraste a multidão das maravilhas que começarás a fazer nos últimos tempos; mas em que tempo, não me mostraste.

63Behold, O Lord, now hast thou shewed me the multitude of the wonders, which thou wilt begin to do in the last times: but at what time, thou hast not shewed me.
