4 Esdras 9

1Ele me respondeu então, e disse: Mede diligentemente o tempo em si mesmo; e quando vires que uma parte dos sinais preditos já passou,

1He answered me then, and said, Measure thou the time diligently in itself: and when thou seest part of the signs past, which I have told thee before,

2Então entenderás que é este mesmo o tempo em que o Altíssimo começará a visitar o mundo que fez.

2Then shalt thou understand, that it is the very same time, wherein the Highest will begin to visit the world which he made.

3Portanto, quando se virem no mundo terremotos e tumultos de povos,

3Therefore when there shall be seen earthquakes and uproars of the people in the world:

4Então compreenderás bem que o Altíssimo falou destas coisas desde os dias que foram antes de ti, desde o princípio.

4Then shalt thou well understand, that the most High spake of those things from the days that were before thee, even from the beginning.

5Pois, assim como tudo o que é feito no mundo tem princípio e fim, e o fim é manifesto,

5For like as all that is made in the world hath a beginning and an end, and the end is manifest:

6Assim também os tempos do Altíssimo têm princípios evidentes em maravilhas e obras poderosas, e fins em efeitos e sinais.

6Even so the times also of the Highest have plain beginnings in wonder and powerful works, and endings in effects and signs.

7E todo aquele que for salvo, e puder escapar pelas suas obras e pela fé com que crestes,

7And every one that shall be saved, and shall be able to escape by his works, and by faith, whereby ye have believed,

8Será preservado dos referidos perigos e verá a minha salvação na minha terra e dentro dos meus termos; pois os santifiquei para mim desde o princípio.

8Shall be preserved from the said perils, and shall see my salvation in my land, and within my borders: for I have sanctified them for me from the beginning.

9Então estarão em mísero estado os que agora desprezaram os meus caminhos; e os que os rejeitaram com desdém habitarão em tormentos.

9Then shall they be in pitiful case, which now have abused my ways: and they that have cast them away despitefully shall dwell in torments.

10Pois aqueles que em sua vida receberam benefícios e não me conheceram,

10For such as in their life have received benefits, and have not known me;

11E os que aborreceram a minha lei enquanto ainda tinham liberdade, e quando ainda lhes estava aberto o lugar de arrependimento, não o entenderam, antes o desprezaram,

11And they that have loathed my law, while they had yet liberty, and, when as yet place of repentance was open unto them, understood not, but despised it;

12Esses devem conhecê-lo após a morte pelo tormento.

12The same must know it after death by pain.

13E tu, portanto, não sejas curioso de como os ímpios serão punidos e quando; mas indaga como os justos serão salvos, de quem é o mundo e para quem o mundo foi criado.

13And therefore be thou not curious how the ungodly shall be punished, and when: but enquire how the righteous shall be saved, whose the world is, and for whom the world is created.

14Então respondi eu e disse:

14Then answered I and said,

15Já disse antes, e agora digo, e direi também depois, que são muito mais os que perecem do que os que hão de ser salvos,

15I have said before, and now do speak, and will speak it also hereafter, that there be many more of them which perish, than of them which shall be saved:

16Assim como a onda é maior do que a gota.

16Like as a wave is greater than a drop.

17E ele me respondeu, dizendo: Qual é o campo, tal é também a semente; como são as flores, tais são também as cores; tal como é o artífice, tal é a obra; e como é o lavrador, tal é a sua lavoura; pois era o tempo do mundo.

17And he answered me, saying, Like as the field is, so is also the seed; as the flowers be, such are the colours also; such as the workman is, such also is the work; and as the husbandman is himself, so is his husbandry also: for it was the time of the world.

18E quando eu preparava o mundo, que ainda não estava feito, para que nele habitassem estes que agora vivem, ninguém falou contra mim.

18And now when I prepared the world, which was not yet made, even for them to dwell in that now live, no man spake against me.

19Pois então todos obedeciam; mas agora os costumes dos que foram criados neste mundo feito são corrompidos por uma semente perpétua e se libertam por uma lei insondável.

19For then every one obeyed: but now the manners of them which are created in this world that is made are corrupted by a perpetual seed, and by a law which is unsearchable rid themselves.

20Assim considerei o mundo, e eis que havia perigo por causa dos ardis que nele entraram.

20So I considered the world, and, behold, there was peril because of the devices that were come into it.

21E vi, e poupei-o com grande indulgência, e reservei para mim uma uva do cacho e uma planta de grande linhagem.

21And I saw, and spared it greatly, and have kept me a grape of the cluster, and a plant of a great people.

22Pereça, pois, a multidão que nasceu em vão; e guarde-se a minha uva e a minha planta, pois com grande trabalho as aperfeiçoei.

22Let the multitude perish then, which was born in vain; and let my grape be kept, and my plant; for with great labour have I made it perfect.

23Contudo, se cessares ainda mais sete dias (porém não jejuarás neles,

23Nevertheless, if thou wilt cease yet seven days more, (but thou shalt not fast in them,

24Mas vai a um campo de flores, onde nenhuma casa esteja edificada, e come somente das flores do campo; não comas carne, nem bebas vinho, mas come apenas flores);

24But go into a field of flowers, where no house is builded, and eat only the flowers of the field; taste no flesh, drink no wine, but eat flowers only;)

25E ora continuamente ao Altíssimo, então virei e falarei contigo.

25And pray unto the Highest continually, then will I come and talk with thee.

26Fui, pois, para o campo que se chama Ardate, como ele me ordenara; e ali me assentei entre as flores, e comi das ervas do campo, e o alimento destas me sustentou.

26So I went my way into the field which is called Ardath, like as he commanded me; and there I sat among the flowers, and did eat of the herbs of the field, and the meat of the same satisfied me.

27E depois de sete dias assentei-me sobre a relva, e o meu coração se angustiou dentro de mim, como dantes.

27After seven days I sat upon the grass, and my heart was vexed within me, like as before:

28E abri a minha boca e comecei a falar diante do Altíssimo, e disse:

28And I opened my mouth, and began to talk before the most High, and said,

29Ó Senhor, tu que te revelas a nós, tu foste manifestado aos nossos pais no deserto, num lugar onde nenhum homem pisava, numa terra estéril, quando saíram do Egito.

29O Lord, thou that shewest thyself unto us, thou wast shewed unto our fathers in the wilderness, in a place where no man treadeth, in a barren place, when they came out of Egypt.

30E falaste, dizendo: Ouve-me, ó Israel; e atenta para as minhas palavras, ó semente de Jacó.

30And thou spakest saying, Hear me, O Israel; and mark my words, thou seed of Jacob.

31Pois eis que semeio em vós a minha lei, e ela dará fruto em vós, e sereis honrados nela para sempre.

31For, behold, I sow my law in you, and it shall bring fruit in you, and ye shall be honoured in it for ever.

32Mas nossos pais, que receberam a lei, não a guardaram, e não observaram as tuas ordenanças; e embora o fruto da tua lei não perecesse, nem pudesse perecer, pois era teu,

32But our fathers, which received the law, kept it not, and observed not thy ordinances: and though the fruit of thy law did not perish, neither could it, for it was thine;

33Contudo os que a receberam pereceram, porque não guardaram aquilo que neles fora semeado.

33Yet they that received it perished, because they kept not the thing that was sown in them.

34E eis que é costume que, quando a terra recebe semente, ou o mar um navio, ou qualquer vaso alimento ou bebida, perecendo aquilo em que foi semeado ou lançado,

34And, lo, it is a custom, when the ground hath received seed, or the sea a ship, or any vessel meat or drink, that, that being perished wherein it was sown or cast into,

35Pereça também aquilo que foi semeado, ou lançado, ou recebido, e não permaneça conosco; mas conosco não sucedeu assim.

35That thing also which was sown, or cast therein, or received, doth perish, and remaineth not with us: but with us it hath not happened so.

36Pois nós, que recebemos a lei, perecemos pelo pecado, juntamente com o nosso coração que a recebeu;

36For we that have received the law perish by sin, and our heart also which received it

37Todavia, a lei não perece, mas permanece na sua força.

37Notwithstanding the law perisheth not, but remaineth in his force.

38E enquanto eu falava estas coisas no meu coração, olhei para trás com os meus olhos, e ao lado direito vi uma mulher, e eis que ela pranteava e chorava em alta voz, e estava grandemente aflita no coração, e suas vestes estavam rasgadas, e tinha cinza sobre a cabeça.

38And when I spake these things in my heart, I looked back with mine eyes, and upon the right side I saw a woman, and, behold, she mourned and wept with a loud voice, and was much grieved in heart, and her clothes were rent, and she had ashes upon her head.

39Então deixei as meditações em que estava e voltei-me para ela,

39Then let I my thoughts go that I was in, and turned me unto her,

40E disse-lhe: Por que choras? por que estás tão angustiada em tua alma?

40And said unto her, Wherefore weepest thou? why art thou so grieved in thy mind?

41E ela me disse: Deixa-me, senhor meu, para que eu chore por mim mesma e aumente a minha dor, pois estou mui aflita no meu espírito e muito abatida.

41And she said unto me, Sir, let me alone, that I may bewail myself, and add unto my sorrow, for I am sore vexed in my mind, and brought very low.

42E eu lhe disse: Que tens tu? dize-me.

42And I said unto her, What aileth thee? tell me.

43Ela me disse: Eu, tua serva, fui estéril e não tive filhos, embora tivesse marido por trinta anos.

43She said unto me, I thy servant have been barren, and had no child, though I had an husband thirty years,

44E nesses trinta anos nada mais fiz, de dia e de noite, e a cada hora, senão suplicar ao Altíssimo.

44And those thirty years I did nothing else day and night, and every hour, but make my, prayer to the Highest.

45Depois de trinta anos, Deus ouviu a mim, tua serva, olhou para a minha miséria, considerou a minha tribulação e deu-me um filho; e muito me alegrei com ele, assim como meu marido e todos os meus vizinhos; e demos grande honra ao Todo-Poderoso.

45After thirty years God heard me thine handmaid, looked upon my misery, considered my trouble, and gave me a son: and I was very glad of him, so was my husband also, and all my neighbours: and we gave great honour unto the Almighty.

46E criei-o com grande fadiga.

46And I nourished him with great travail.

47Assim, quando ele cresceu e chegou o tempo em que devia tomar mulher, preparei um banquete.

47So when he grew up, and came to the time that he should have a wife, I made a feast.
