4 Macabeus 13

1Se, pois, os sete irmãos desprezaram os tormentos até à morte, está universalmente provado que a Razão inspirada é soberana senhora sobre as paixões.

1If therefore the seven brethren despised the tortures even to the death, it is universally proved that the Inspired Reason is supreme lord over the passions.

2Porque, se tivessem cedido às suas paixões ou padecimentos, e comido carnes imundas, teríamos dito que foram por elas vencidos.

2For if they had yielded to their passions or sufferings and eaten unclean meat we should have said that they had been conquered thereby.

3Mas, neste caso, não foi assim; antes, pela sua Razão, que foi louvada diante de Deus, elevaram-se soberanos sobre as suas paixões.

3But in this case it was not so; on the contrary by their Reason, which was commended in the sight of God, they rose superior to their passions.

4E é impossível negar a supremacia do entendimento; pois alcançaram a vitória sobre as suas paixões e as suas dores.

4And it is impossible to deny the supremacy of the mind; for they won the victory over their passions and their pains.

5Como poderíamos deixar de admitir o domínio da reta Razão sobre a paixão nestes homens que não recuaram diante das agonias do fogo?

5How can we do otherwise than admit right Reason's mastery over passion with these men who shrank not before the agonies of burning?

6Pois, assim como as torres sobre os molhes dos portos repelem os assaltos das ondas e oferecem uma entrada serena aos que entram no ancoradouro, assim a reta Razão dos jovens, qual fortaleza de sete torres, defendeu o porto da justiça e repeliu a tempestade das paixões.

6For even as towers on harbour-moles repulse the assaults of the waves and offer a calm entrance to those entering the haven, so the seven-towered right Reason of the youths defended the haven of righteousness and repulsed the tempestuousness of the passions.

7Formaram um coro sagrado de justiça, exortando-se mutuamente e dizendo:

7They formed a holy choir of righteousness as they cheered one another on, saying:

8Morramos como irmãos, ó irmãos, pela Lei!

8'Let us die like brothers, O brethren, for the Law.

9Imitemos os três jovens na corte assíria, que desprezaram esta mesma prova da fornalha!

9Let us imitate the Three Children at the Assyrian court who despised this same ordeal of the furnace.

10Não nos mostremos covardes diante da prova da justiça!

10Let us not turn cravens before the proof of righteousness.'

11E dizia um: Irmão, tem bom ânimo!; e outro: Suporta valorosamente!; e outro, trazendo à memória o passado: Lembrai-vos de que linhagem sois, e de sob qual mão paternal Isaque, por causa da justiça, se entregou para ser sacrificado!

11And one said, 'Brother, be of good cheer,' and another, 'Bear it out nobly'; and another recalling the past, 'Remember of what stock ye are, and at whose fatherly hand Isaac for righteousness' sake yielded himself to be a sacrifice.'

12E todos eles juntamente, olhando uns para os outros com semblante radiante e mui denodado, diziam: De todo o coração nos consagraremos a Deus, que nos concedeu as nossas almas, e entreguemos os nossos corpos à custódia da Lei!

12And each and all of them together, looking at each other brightly and very boldly, said, 'With a whole heart will we consecrate ourselves unto God who gave us our souls, and let us lend our bodies to the keeping of the Law.

13Não temamos àquele que cuida matar; pois uma grande peleja e perigo da alma aguarda em tormento eterno àqueles que transgridem o mandamento de Deus!

13Let us not fear him who thinketh he kills; for a great struggle and peril of the soul awaits in eternal torment those who transgress the ordinance of God.

14Armemo-nos, pois, com o domínio da divina Razão sobre as paixões!

14Let us then arm ourselves with divine Reason's mastery of the passions.

15Depois deste nosso padecimento, Abraão, Isaque e Jacó nos receberão, e todos os nossos antepassados nos louvarão!

15After this our passion, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob shall receive us, and all our forefathers shall praise us.'

16E a cada um dos irmãos, ao serem arrastados, os que ainda aguardavam a sua vez diziam: Não nos desonres, irmão, nem sejas infiel aos nossos irmãos que já morreram!

16And to each separate one of the brothers, as they were dragged off, those whose turn was yet to come said, 'Do not disgrace us, brother, nor be false to our brethren already dead.'
