4 Macabeus 17

1Alguns dos guardas afirmaram que, quando ela também estava prestes a ser presa e morta, lançou-se voluntariamente na fogueira, a fim de que homem algum tocasse o seu corpo.

1SOME of the guards declared that when she also was about to be seized and put to death, she cast herself on the pyre in order that no man might touch her body.

2Ó mãe, que juntamente com os teus sete filhos quebrantaste a violência do tirano, anulaste os seus perversos desígnios e deste um exemplo da nobreza da fé!

2O mother, that together with thy seven sons didst break the tyrant's force, and bring to nought his evil devices, and gavest an example of the nobleness of faith.

3Estavas nobremente assentada qual teto sobre as colunas dos teus filhos, e o terremoto dos suplícios de modo algum te abalou.

3Thou wert nobly set as a roof upon thy sons as pillars, and the earthquake of the torments shook thee not at all.

4Regozija-te, pois, mãe de alma pura, tendo da mão de Deus a segura recompensa pela tua constância!

4Rejoice therefore, pure-souled mother, having the hope of thy endurance certain at the hand of God.

5Não tão majestosa brilha a lua entre os astros no céu como tu que, tendo iluminado o caminho de teus sete filhos resplandecentes como estrelas rumo à justiça, estás em honra diante de Deus; e com eles foste assentada nos céus.

5Not so majestic stands the moon amid the stars in heaven as thou, having lit the path of thy seven starlike sons unto righteousness, standest in honour with God; and thou art set in heaven with them.

6Porque os teus filhos nasceram de um filho de Abraão.

6For thy child-bearing was from the son of Abraham.

7E, se nos fosse lícito retratar, como faria algum pintor, o relato da tua piedade, não se haveriam de estremecer os espectadores diante da mãe de sete filhos sofrendo, por causa da justiça, tão inumeráveis tormentos até à morte?

7And had it been lawful for us to paint, as might some artist, the tale of thy piety, would not the spectators have shuddered at the mother of seven sons suffering for righteousness' sake multitudinous tortures even unto death?

8E bem conviria gravar estas palavras sobre o seu sepulcro, servindo de memória perene às futuras gerações do nosso povo: AQUI JAZEM UM SACERDOTE IDOSO, UMA MULHER ENTRADA EM ANOS E OS SEUS SETE FILHOS, PELA VIOLÊNCIA DE UM TIRANO QUE DESEJAVA DESTRUIR O POVO HEBREU. ELES DEFENDERAM OS DIREITOS DO NOSSO POVO, OLHANDO PARA DEUS E SUPORTANDO OS TORMENTOS ATÉ À MORTE.

8And indeed it were fitting to inscribe these words over their resting-place, speaking for a memorial to future generations of our people: HERE LIE AN AGED PRIEST AND A WOMAN FULL OF YEARS AND HER SEVEN SONS THROUGH THE VIOL- ENCE OF A TYRANT DESIRING TO DESTROY THE HEBREW NATION. THEY VINDICATED THE RIGHTS OF OUR PEOPLE LOOKING UNTO GOD AND ENDURING THE TORMENTS EVEN UNTO DEATH.

9Porque em verdade foi uma santa batalha aquela que por eles foi travada; pois, naquele dia, a virtude, provando-os mediante a paciência, propôs-lhes o prêmio da vitória na incorrupção da vida eterna.

9For truly it was a holy war which was fought by them. For on that day virtue, proving them through endurance, set before them the prize of victory in incorruption in everlasting life.

10O primeiro no combate foi Eleazar, e a mãe dos sete filhos cumpriu a sua parte, e os irmãos pelejaram valentemente.

10But the first in the fight was Eleazar, and the mother of the seven sons played her part, and the brethren fought.

11O tirano era o adversário deles, e o mundo e a vida dos homens eram os espectadores.

11The tyrant was their adversary and the world and the life of man were the spectators.

12E a justiça alcançou a vitória e concedeu a coroa aos seus atletas. Quem não se maravilhava perante os valorosos atletas da verdadeira Lei?

12And righteousness won the victor and gave the crown to her athletes. Who but wondered at the athletes of the true Law?

13Quem não ficava atônito diante deles? O próprio tirano e todo o seu conselho admiravam a sua constância, pela qual agora estão de pé diante do trono de Deus e vivem na era bem-aventurada.

13Who were not amazed at them? The tyrant himself and his whole council admired their endurance, whereby they now do both Stand beside the throne of God and live the blessed age.

14Pois Moisés diz: E todos os que se santificaram estão sob as tuas mãos.

14For Moses says, 'All also who have sanctified themselves are under thy hands.'

15E estes varões, havendo-se santificado por amor de Deus, não apenas receberam esta honra, mas também a glória de que, por meio deles, o inimigo não teve mais poder sobre o nosso povo, e o tirano sofreu o devido castigo, e a nossa terra foi purificada, tendo eles se tornado como que um resgate pelo pecado da nossa nação; e, pelo sangue destes justos e pela propiciação da sua morte, a divina Providência livrou a Israel, que dantes era tão duramente afligido.

15And these men, therefore, having sanctified themselves for God's sake, not only have received this honour, but also the honour that through them the enemy had no more power over our people, and the tyrant suffered punishment, and our country was purified, they having as it were become a ransom for our nation's sin; and through the blood of these righteous men and the propitiation of their death, the divine Providence delivered Israel that before was evil entreated.

16Porque, quando o tirano Antíoco contemplou o heroísmo da virtude deles e a sua paciência sob os suplícios, proclamou publicamente a sua constância aos seus soldados como exemplo insigne; e com isso infundiu nos seus homens o brio e o valor militar no campo de batalha e nas fadigas do cerco, de modo que saqueou e abateu a todos os seus adversários.

16For when the tyrant Antiochus saw the heroism of their virtue, and their endurance under the tortures, he publicly held up their endurance to his soldiers as an example; and he thus inspired his men with a sense of honour and heroism on the field of battle and in the labours of besieging, so that he plundered and overthrew all his enemies.
