4 Macabeus 5

1Assentou-se, pois, o tirano Antíoco em tribunal num lugar elevado, ladeado por seus conselheiros e com suas tropas em armas ao redor, ordenando aos guardas que arrastassem até ali a cada um dos hebreus e os constrangessem a comer carne de porco e manjares sacrificados aos ídolos; e, se alguém recusasse contaminar-se com tais abominações, fosse atormentado e morto.

1Accordingly, the tyrant Antiochus, accompanied by his councillors, sat in judgement on a certain high place with his troops drawn up around him in full armour, and he ordered his guards to drag there every single man of the Hebrews and compel them to eat swine's flesh and things offered to idols; but if any should refuse to defile themselves with the unclean things, they were to he tortured and put to death.

2Tendo sido muitos conduzidos à força, foi trazido perante Antíoco, como o primeiro da assembleia, um hebreu por nome Eleazar, de estirpe sacerdotal, douto na ciência da Lei, homem de idade avançada e mui estimado por muitos na corte do tirano por causa de sua sabedoria.

2And when many had been taken by force, one man first from among the company was brought before Antiochus, a Hebrew whose name was Eleazar, a priest by birth, trained in knowledge of the law, a man advanced in years and well known to many of the tyrant's court for his philosophy.

3E Antíoco, pondo os olhos nele, disse: «Antes de ordenar que comecem os teus suplícios, ó venerando ancião, quero dar-te este conselho: come da carne de porco e salva a tua vida; porque reverencio a tua velhice e as tuas cãs, conquanto o tê-las trazido por tantos anos apegado ainda à religião judaica me faça duvidar de tua sabedoria.

3And Antiochus, looking on him, said: 'Before I allow the tortures to begin for you, O venerable man, I would give you this counsel, that you should eat of the flesh of the swine and save your life; for I respect your age and your grey hairs, although to have worn them so long a time, and still to cling to the Jewish religion, makes me think you no philosopher.

4Pois excelente é a carne deste animal que a Natureza benignamente nos outorgou, e por que haverias de abominá-la? Em verdade, é rematada loucura recusar deleites legítimos, e é injusto repudiar os favores da Natureza.

4For most excellent is the meat of this animal which Nature has graciously bestowed upon us, and why should you abominate it? Truly it is folly not to enjoy innocent pleasures, and it is wrong to reject Nature's favours.

5Porém maior loucura ainda será da tua parte se, por causa de vãos escrúpulos acerca da verdade, persistires em desafiar o meu poder para tua própria perdição.

5But it will be still greater folly, I think, on your part if with idle vapouring about truth you shall proceed to defy even me to your own punishment.

6Não despertarás da tua absurda filosofia? Não deitarás fora as quimeras dos teus raciocínios, e, assumindo um ânimo digno de teus anos maduros, aprenderás a verdadeira sabedoria do proveito, acolhendo o meu benévolo conselho e apiedando-te de tua própria velhice?

6Will you not awake from your preposterous philosophy? Will you not fling aside the nonsense of your calculations and, adopting another frame of mind befitting your mature years, learn the true philosophy of expediency, and how to my charitable counsel, and have pity on your own venerable age?

7Considera também isto: que se houver algum Poder divino que vele por esta tua religião, certamente perdoará uma transgressão cometida sob violência e coação».

7For consider this, too, that even if there be some Power whose eye is upon this religion of yours, he will always pardon you for a transgression done under compulsion.'

8Mas Eleazar, incitado pelo tirano à ingestão proibida de carnes imundas, pediu licença para falar; e, obtida ela, começou o seu discurso perante o tribunal nestes termos:

8Bus urged by the tyrant to the unlawful eating of unclean meat, Eleazar asked permission to speak; and receiving it, he began his speech before the court as follows:

9«Nós, ó Antíoco, havendo recebido a Lei divina como constituição de nossa pátria, não cremos que nos seja imposta necessidade maior do que a de obedecer a esta mesma Lei.

9'We, O Antiochus, having accepted the Divine Law as the Law of our country, do not believe any stronger necessity is laid upon us than that of our obedience to the Law.

10Por conseguinte, temos por indeclinável dever não violar a Lei em coisa alguma.

10Therefore we do surely deem it right not. in any way whatsoever to transgress the Law.

11E ainda que a nossa Lei, como dizes, não fosse verdadeiramente divina, e nós erradamente a julgássemos divina, nem assim nos seria lícito macular a nossa fidelidade e renome de piedade.

11And yet, were our Law, as you suggest, not truly divine, while we vainly believed it to be divine, not even so would it be right for us to destroy our reputation for piety.

12Não julgues, pois, que seja falta leve o comermos vianda imunda, porquanto a transgressão da Lei, quer nas coisas pequenas, quer nas grandes, tem a mesma gravidade, pois em ambos os casos a Lei é igualmente menosprezada.

12Think it not, then, a small sin for us to eat the unclean thing, for the transgression of the Law, be it in small things or in great, is equally heinous; for in either case equally the Law is despised.

13Escarneces da nossa sabedoria, como se sob o seu amparo vivêssemos de modo alheio à razão.

13And you scoff at our philosophy, as if under it we were living in a manner contrary to reason.

14Não é assim; pois a Lei nos ensina o autodomínio, de sorte que somos senhores de todos os nossos prazeres e concupiscências, e somos robustecidos na fortaleza a fim de suportar de bom grado toda aflição; e nos ensina a justiça, para que procedamos com equidade em todas as circunstâncias; e nos ensina a piedade, para que adoremos com reverência unicamente ao Deus vivo e verdadeiro.

14Not so, for the Law teaches us self-control, so that we are masters of all our pleasures and desires and are thoroughly trained in manliness so as to endure all pain with readiness; and it teaches justice, so that with all our various dispositions we act fairly, and it teaches righteousness, so that with due reverence we worship only the God who is.

15Por este motivo não comemos carne impura; pois, crendo que a nossa Lei foi outorgada por Deus, sabemos que o Criador do universo, como sábio Legislador, compadece-se de nós em harmonia com a nossa natureza.

15Therefore do we eat no unclean meat; for believing our Law to be given by God, we know also that the Creator of the world, as a Lawgiver, feels for us according to our nature.

16Ele nos ordenou comer aquilo que é proveitoso para as nossas almas, e nos proibiu os alimentos que seriam nocivos.

16He has commanded us to eat the things that will be convenient for our souls, and he has forbidden us to eat meats that would be the contrary.

17Mas é atitude própria de um tirano constranger-nos não somente a violar a Lei, senão também forçar-nos a comer de sorte que escarneças desta profanação que nos é sumamente abominável.

17But it is the act of a tyrant that you should compel us not only to transgress the Law, but should also make us eat in such manner that you may mock at' this defilement so utterly abominable to us.

18Não zombarás, porém, de mim desta maneira, nem violarei eu os sagrados juramentos de meus pais de guardar a Lei, ainda que me arranques os olhos e queimes as minhas entranhas no fogo.

18But you shall not mock at me thus, neither will I break the sacred oaths of my ancestors to keep the Law, not even though you tear out mine eyes and bum out mine entrails.

19Não estou tão enfraquecido pela velhice que, quando a retidão se acha em perigo, o vigor da juventude não ressurja na minha Razão.

19I am not so unmanned by old age but that when righteousness is at stake the strength of youth returns to my Reason.

20Aperta, pois, os teus torniquetes e aviva mais o fogo da tua fornalha; não tenho tanta compaixão de minha velhice que por ela eu venha a quebrar em minha pessoa a Lei de meus pais.

20So twist hard your racks and blow your furnace hotter. I do not so pity mine old age as to break the Law of my fathers in mine own person.

21Não hei de desmentir-te, ó Lei que foste a minha mestra; não hei de abandonar-te, ó amada temperança; não hei de envergonhar-te, ó Razão que amas a sabedoria; nem renegarei a vós, ó sacerdócio venerável e conhecimento sagrado da Lei!

21I will not belie thee, O Law that wast my teacher; I will not desert thee, O beloved self-control; I will not put thee to shame, O wisdom-loving Reason, nor will I deny ye, O venerated priesthood and knowledge of the Law.

22Tampouco mancharás a boca pura de minha velhice e a minha perseverança de toda a vida na Lei; puro me receberão os meus pais, sem que eu tema os teus tormentos até a morte.

22Neither shalt thou sully the pure mouth of mine old age and my lifelong constancy to the Law. Clean shall my fathers receive me, unafraid of thy torments even to the death.

23Porque podes de fato tiranizar os ímpios, mas jamais dominarás o meu firme propósito de justiça, quer por tuas palavras, quer por tuas obras!»

23For thou indeed mayest be tyrant over unrighteous men, but thou shalt not lord it over my resolution in the matter of righteousness either by thy words or through thy deeds.'
