4 Macabeus 8

1E, por ordem do tirano, sete irmãos, juntamente com sua idosa mãe, foram conduzidos prisioneiros à sua presença, todos belos, modestos, de nobre nascimento e, em geral, de aparência atraente.

1And under these orders of the tyrant seven brethren together with their aged mother were brought prisoners before him, all handsome, and modest, and well-born, — and generally attractive.

2Quando o tirano os viu ali, em pé como um coro festivo, com a mãe no meio deles, reparou neles e, impressionado com seu porte nobre e distinto, sorriu-lhes e, chamando-os para perto, disse:

2And when the tyrant saw them there, standing as if they were a festal choir with their mother in the midst, he took notice of them, and struck by their noble and distinguished bearing he smiled at them, and calling them nearer said:

3Ó jovens, desejo o bem a cada um de vós, admiro vossa beleza e muito honro tão numeroso grupo de irmãos; por isso, não apenas vos aconselho a não persistir na loucura daquele ancião que já sofreu, mas também vos rogo que cedais a mim e participeis de minha amizade. Pois, assim como posso punir os que desobedecem às minhas ordens, também posso elevar os que me obedecem.

3'O young men, I wish well to each one of you, and admire your beauty, and honour highly so large a band of brothers; so not only do I advise you not to persist in the madness of that old man who has already suffered, but I even entreat of you to yield to me and become partakers in my friendship. For, as I am able to punish those who disobey my orders, so am I able to advance those who do obey me.

4Estai certos, pois, de que recebereis cargos importantes e autoridade a meu serviço, se rejeitardes a lei ancestral de vosso povo.

4Be assured then that you shall be given positions of importance and authority in my service if you will reject the ancestral law of your polity.

5Participai da vida helênica, segui um novo caminho e desfrutai um pouco de vossa juventude; pois, se vossa desobediência me provocar à ira, obrigar-me-eis a recorrer a penas terríveis e a matar cada um de vós mediante tortura.

5Share in the Hellenic life, and walk in a new way, and take some pleasure in your youth; for if you drive me to anger with your disobedience you will compel me to resort to terrible penalties and put every single one of you to death by torture.

6Tende, pois, compaixão de vós mesmos, de quem até eu, vosso adversário, me compadeço por causa de vossa juventude e beleza.

6Have pity then on yourselves, whom even I, your opponent, pity for your youth and your beauty.

7Não considerareis entre vós que, se me desobedecerdes, nada vos espera senão a morte entre tormentos?

7Will you not consider with yourselves this thing, that if you disobey me there is nothing before you but death in torments?'

8Com estas palavras, ordenou que fossem apresentados os instrumentos de tortura, a fim de persuadi-los pelo medo a comer carne impura.

8With these words he ordered the instruments of torture to be brought forward in order to persuade them by fear to eat unclean meat.

9Mas, quando os guardas trouxeram rodas, instrumentos de deslocar articulações, cavaletes, aparelhos de esmagar ossos, catapultas, caldeirões, braseiros, parafusos de apertar os polegares, garras de ferro, cunhas e ferros de marcar, o tirano tornou a falar e disse:

9But when the guards had produced wheels, and joint-dislocators, and racks, and bone-crushers, and catapults, and cauldrons, and braziers, and thumb-screws, and iron claws, and wedges, and branding irons, the tyrant spoke again and said:

10Melhor será que tenhais medo, meus rapazes; a justiça que adorais perdoará vossa transgressão involuntária.

10'You had better feel fear, my lads, and the justice you worship will pardon your unwilling transgression.'

11Eles, porém, ouvindo suas persuasões e vendo seus terríveis instrumentos, não só não demonstraram medo, como opuseram ao tirano sua filosofia e, pela reta Razão, humilharam sua tirania.

11But they, hearing his persuasions, and seeing his dreadful engines, not only showed no fear but actually arrayed their philosophy in opposition to the tyrant, and by their right Reason did abase his tyranny.

12Considerai, contudo: se alguns deles fossem fracos de ânimo e covardes, que palavras teriam proferido? Não seriam estas?

12And yet consider; supposing some amongst them to have been faint-hearted and cowardly, what sort of language would they have used? would it not have been to this effect?

13Ai de nós, criaturas miseráveis e insensatas em extremo! Quando o rei nos convida e nos dirige um apelo com promessas de bom tratamento, não lhe obedeceremos?

13'Alas! miserable creatures that we are and foolish above measure! When the king invites us and appeals to us on terms of kind treatment shall we not obey him?

14Por que nos animamos com desejos vãos e ousamos uma desobediência que nos custará a vida? Não temeremos, irmãos, os terríveis instrumentos, nem ponderaremos suas ameaças de tortura, abandonando estas jactâncias vazias e esta presunção fatal?

14Why do we encourage ourselves with vain desires and dare a disobedience that is to cost us our lives? Shall we not, O men my brothers, fear the dread instruments and weigh well his threats of the tortures, and abandon these empty vaunts and this fatal bragging?

15Tenhamos compaixão de nossa juventude e piedade da velhice de nossa mãe; e consideremos que, se desobedecermos, morreremos.

15Let us take pity on our own youth and have compassion on our mother's age; and let us lay to heart that if we disobey we shall die.

16Até a justiça divina terá misericórdia de nós se, constrangidos pela necessidade, cedermos ao rei por medo. Por que haveríamos de rejeitar esta vida querida e privar-nos deste doce mundo?

16And even the divine justice will have mercy on us, if compelled by necessity we yield to the king in fear. Why should we cast away from us this dear life and rob ourselves of this sweet world?

17Não lutemos contra a necessidade nem, com vã confiança, atraiamos a tortura sobre nós.

17Let us not strive against necessity nor with vain confidence invite our torture.

18A própria Lei não deseja condenar-nos à morte quando estamos aterrorizados pelos instrumentos de tortura.

18Even the Law itself does not willingly condemn us to death, we being in terror of the instruments of torture.

19Por que nos inflama semelhante espírito de contenda, e por que nos agrada uma obstinação mortal, se poderíamos viver em paz obedecendo ao rei?

19Why does such contentiousness inflame us and a fatal obstinacy find favour with us, when we might have a peaceful life by obeying the king?'

20Mas nenhum desses dizeres saiu da boca daqueles jovens diante da perspectiva da tortura, nem tais pensamentos lhes vieram à mente.

20But no such words escaped these young men at the prospect of the torture, nor did such thoughts enter into their minds.

21Pois desprezavam as paixões e dominavam a dor.

21For they were despisers of the passions and masters over pain.
