Apocalipse de Abraão 6

1Quando eu, Abraão, ouvi tais palavras de meu pai, ri em minha mente e suspirei na tristeza e na ira de minha alma, e disse: "Como, então, aquilo que ele mesmo faz — estátuas fabricadas — pode ser auxílio para meu pai?

1When I, Abraham, however, heard such words from my father, I laughed in my mind and sighed in the grief and in the anger of my soul, and said: "How then can that which is made by him — manufactured statues — be a helper of my father?

2Ou será o corpo sujeito à sua alma, e a alma ao espírito, e o espírito à insensatez e à ignorância?" E eu disse: "Convém suportar o mal uma vez.

2Or shall the body then be subject to its soul, and the soul to the spirit, and the spirit to folly and ignorance!" And I said: "It is fitting once to endure evil.

3Assim, voltarei minha mente para o que é puro e exporei diante dele meus pensamentos."

3So I will direct my mind to what is pure and lay my thoughts open before him."

4[E] respondi: "Ó pai Terá, seja qual for destes que louvas como deus, és insensato em tua mente.

4[And] I answered and said: "O father Terah, whichever of these thou praisest as a god, thou art foolish in thy mind.

5Eis que os deuses de teu irmão Ora, que estão no templo sagrado, são mais dignos de honra do que [estes] teus.

5Behold the gods of thy brother Ora, which stand in the holy temple, are more worthy of honour than [these of] thine.

6Pois eis que Zúqueu, deus de teu irmão Oron, é mais digno de honra do que teu deus Merumate, porque é feito de ouro, muito estimado pelas pessoas, e, quando envelhecer com os anos, será remodelado; mas, se teu deus Merumate sofrer alteração ou se quebrar, não será renovado, porque é uma pedra; o mesmo se dá com o deus Joavon [que está com Zúqueu acima dos outros deuses — quanto mais digno de honra é ele do que o deus Barisate, que é feito de madeira, enquanto ele é forjado em prata!

6For behold Zucheus, the god of thy brother Oron, is more worthy of honour than thy god Merumath, because he is made of gold which is highly valued by people, and when he groweth old in years he will be re-modelled; but if your god Merumath is changed or broken, he will not be renewed, because he is a stone; the which is also the case with the god Joavon [who standeth with Zucheus over the other gods — how much more worthy of honour is he than the god Barisat, who is made of wood, while he is forged of silver!

7Como foi feito, pela adaptação humana, valioso na aparência exterior!

7How is he made, by adaptation of man, valuable to outward appearance!

8Mas teu deus Barisate, quando ainda estava, antes de ser preparado, enraizado (?) na terra e era grande e maravilhoso pela glória dos ramos e das flores, tu o talhaste com o machado, e, por meio de tua arte, ele foi feito um deus.

8But thy god Barisat, while he was still, before he had been prepared, rooted up (?) upon the earth and was great and wonderful with the glory of branches and blossom, thou didst hew out with the axe, and by means of thy art he hath been made into a god.

9E eis que sua pujança já murchou e pereceu; caiu das alturas ao chão, passou da grandeza à pequenez, e a aparência de seu rosto desapareceu, e ele] próprio Barisate foi consumido pelo fogo, reduzido a cinzas e já não existe; e tu dizes: "Hoje farei outro que amanhã preparará minha comida!" "Ele pereceu em completa destruição!"

9And lo! his fatness is already withered and perished, he is fallen from the height to the ground, he hath come from great estate to littleness, and the appearance of his countenance hath vanished, and he] Barisat himself is burnt up by fire and reduced to ashes and is no more; and thou sayest: "To-day I will make another which to-morrow shall make ready my food!""He hath perished to utter destruction!"
