1Atos e Martírio de São Mateus, o Apóstolo: Naquela época, Mateus, o santo apóstolo e evangelista de Cristo, estava descansando na montanha e orando em sua túnica e manto apostólico sem sandálias; e eis que Jesus veio a Mateus à semelhança das crianças que cantam no paraíso, e disse-lhe: Paz contigo, Mateus! E Mateus, tendo olhado para Ele, e não sabendo quem Ele era, disse: Graça a ti, e paz, ó filho altamente favorecido! E por que você veio até aqui para mim, deixando aqueles que cantam no paraíso e as delícias de lá? Porque aqui o lugar é deserto; e que tipo de mesa vou preparar para você, ó filho, eu não sei, porque não tenho pão nem óleo em uma jarra.

1Acts and Martyrdom of St. Matthew the Apostle: About that time Matthew, the holy apostle and evangelist of Christ, was abiding in the mountain resting, and praying in his tunic and apostolic robes without sandals; and, behold, Jesus came to Matthew in the likeness of the infants who sing in paradise, and said to him: Peace to thee, Matthew! And Matthew having gazed upon Him, and not known who He was, said: Grace to thee, and peace, O child highly favoured! And why hast thou come hither to me, having left those who sing in paradise, and the delights there? Because here the place is desert; and what sort of a table I shall lay for thee, O child, I know not, because I have no bread nor oil in a jar.

2Além disso, até os ventos estão calmos, para não derrubarem das árvores nada para comer; porque, para cumprir meu jejum de quarenta dias, eu, participando apenas dos frutos que caem pelo movimento dos ventos, estou glorificando meu Jesus.

2Moreover, even the winds are at rest, so as not to cast down from the trees to the ground anything for food; because, for the accomplishing of my fast of forty days, I, partaking only of the fruits falling by the movement of the winds, am glorifying my Jesus.

3Agora, portanto, o que devo trazer para você, lindo menino? Não há nem água por perto, para que eu possa lavar os teus pés.

3Now, therefore, what shall I bring thee, beautiful boy? There is not even water near, that I may wash thy feet.

4E a criança disse: Por que dizes, ó Mateus? Entenda e saiba que o bom discurso é melhor do que um bezerro, e as palavras de mansidão melhores do que todas as ervas do campo, e uma palavra doce como o perfume do amor, e a alegria do semblante melhor do que a alimentação, e um olhar agradável é como a aparência da doçura.

4And the child said: Why sayest thou, O Matthew? Understand and know that good discourse is better than a calf, and words of meekness better than every herb of the field, and a sweet saying as the perfume of love, and cheerfulness of countenance better than feeding, and a pleasant look is as the appearance of sweetness.

5Entenda, Mateus, e saiba que eu sou o paraíso, que sou o consolador, sou o poder dos poderes superiores, sou a força daqueles que se restringem, sou a coroa das virgens, sou o autocontrole dos uma vez casados, sou o orgulho dos viúvos, sou a defesa das crianças, sou o fundamento da Igreja, sou o reino dos bispos, sou a glória dos presbíteros, sou o louvor dos diáconos.

5Understand, Matthew, and know that I am paradise, that I am the comforter, I am the power of the powers above, I the strength of those that restrain themselves, I the crown of the virgins, I the self-control of the once married, I the boast of the widowed, I the defence of the infants, I the foundation of the Church, I the kingdom of the bishops, I the glory of the presbyters, I the praise of the deacons.

6Seja um homem e seja forte, Mateus, nestas palavras.

6Be a man, and be strong, Matthew, in, these words.

7E Mateus disse: A visão de ti me encantou completamente, ó filho; além disso, as tuas palavras são cheias de vida.

7And Matthew said: The sight of thee hast altogether delighted me, O child; moreover also, thy words are full of life.

8Pois certamente teu rosto brilha mais que o relâmpago, e tuas palavras são inteiramente muito doces.

8For assuredly thy face shines more than the lightning, and thy words are altogether most sweet.

9E que de fato eu te vi no paraíso quando você cantava com as outras crianças que foram mortas em Belém, eu sei muito bem; mas como você veio de repente até aqui, isso me surpreende completamente.

9And that indeed I saw thee in paradise when thou didst sing with the other infants who were killed in Bethlehem, I know right well; but how thou hast suddenly come hither, this altogether astonishes me.

10Mas uma coisa te perguntarei, ó filho: aquele ímpio Herodes, onde está ele? A criança diz-lhe: Já que perguntaste, ouve a sua morada.

10But I shall ask thee one thing, O child: that impious Herod, where is he? The child says to him: Since thou hast asked, hear his dwelling-place.

11Ele mora, de fato, no Hades; e foi preparado para ele fogo inextinguível, Geena sem fim, lama borbulhante, verme que não dorme, porque ele matou três mil crianças, desejando matar o menino Jesus, o mais velho de todos os tempos; mas de todas essas idades eu sou pai.

11He dwells, indeed, in Hades; and there has been prepared for him fire unquenchable, Gehenna without end, bubbling mire, worm that sleeps not, because he cut off three thousand infants, wishing to slay the child Jesus, the ancient of the ages; but of all these ages I am father.

12Agora, portanto, ó Mateus, pegue esta minha vara, desça da montanha e vá para Myrna, a cidade dos devoradores de homens, e plante-a perto do portão da igreja que você e André fundaram; e assim que você a plantar, será uma árvore grande e alta e com muitos galhos, e seus galhos se estenderão até trinta côvados, e de cada galho o fruto será diferente tanto para a vista quanto para o paladar, e do topo da árvore fluirá muito mel; e de sua raiz brotará uma grande fonte, dando de beber a esta região ao redor e nela haverá criaturas que nadam e rastejam; e nela se lavarão os canibais e comerão do fruto das árvores da videira e do mel; e seus corpos serão mudados e suas formas serão alteradas para serem como as de outros homens; e envergonhar-se-ão da nudez do seu corpo, e vestir-se-ão com roupas de carneiros do rebanho, e não comerão mais coisas impuras; e haverá para eles fogo em superabundância, preparando os sacrifícios para as ofertas, e assarão o seu pão no fogo; e eles se verão à semelhança do resto dos homens e me reconhecerão e glorificarão meu Pai que está nos céus.

12Now therefore, O Matthew, take this rod of mine, and go down from the mountain, and go into Myrna, the city of the man-eaters, and plant it by the gate of the church which thou and Andrew founded; and as soon as thou hast planted it, it shall be a tree, great and lofty and with many branches, and its branches shall extend to thirty cubits, and of each single branch the fruit shall be different both to the sight and the eating, and from the top of the tree shall flow down much honey; and from its root there shall come forth a great fountain, giving drink to this country round about, and in it creatures that swim and creep; and in it the man-eaters shall wash themselves, and eat of the fruit of the trees of the vine and of the honey; and their bodies shall be changed, and their forms shall be altered so as to be like those of other men; and they shall be ashamed of the nakedness of their body, and they shall put on clothing of the rams of the sheep, and they shall no longer eat unclean things; and there shall be to them fire in superabundance, preparing the sacrifices for offerings, and they shall bake their bread with fire; and they shall see each other in the likeness of the rest of men, and they shall acknowledge me, and glorify my Father who is in the heavens.

13Agora, portanto, apresse-se, Mateus, e desça daqui, porque a saída do seu corpo através do fogo está próxima, e a coroa da sua resistência.

13Now therefore make haste, Matthew, and go down hence, because the departure from thy body through fire is at hand, and the crown of thy endurance.

14E o menino, tendo dito isto, e dando-lhe a vara, foi elevado aos céus.

14And the child having said this, and given him the rod, was taken up into the heavens.

15E Mateus desceu da montanha, apressando-se para a cidade.

15And Matthew went down from the mountain, hastening to the city.

16E quando ele estava prestes a entrar na cidade, encontraram-se com ele Fulvana, a esposa do rei, e seu filho Fulvanus e sua esposa Erva, que estavam possuídos por um espírito imundo, e gritaram: Quem te trouxe aqui novamente, Mateus? ou quem te deu a vara para nossa destruição? pois vemos também o menino Jesus, o Filho de Deus, que está contigo.

16And as he was about to enter into the city, there met him Fulvana the wife of the king, and his son Fulvanus and his wife Erva, who were possessed by an unclean spirit, and cried out shouting: Who has brought thee here again, Matthew? or who has given thee the rod for our destruction? for we see also the child Jesus, the Son of God, who is with thee.

17Não vá então, ó Mateus, plantar a vara para o alimento e para a transformação dos devoradores de homens: pois descobri o que devo fazer contigo.

17Do not go then, O Matthew, to plant the rod for the food, and for the transformation of the man-eaters: for I have found what I shall do to thee.

18Pois já que me expulsaste desta cidade e me impediste de cumprir meus desejos entre os devoradores de homens, eis que levantarei contra ti o rei desta cidade, e ele te queimará vivo.

18For since thou didst drive me out of this city, and prevent me from fulfilling my wishes among the man-eaters, behold, I will raise up against thee the king of this city, and he will burn thee alive.

19E Mateus, tendo imposto as mãos sobre cada um dos endemoninhados, pôs os demônios em fuga e curou o povo; e eles o seguiram.

19And Matthew, having laid his hands on each one of the demoniacs, put the demons to flight, and made the people whole; and they followed him.

20E assim o caso se manifestou, Platão, o bispo, tendo ouvido falar da presença do santo apóstolo Mateus, encontrou-o com todo o clero; e, caindo por terra, beijaram-lhe os pés.

20And thus the affair being made manifest, Plato the bishop, having heard of the presence of the holy Apostle Matthew, met him with all the clergy; and having fallen to the ground, they kissed his feet.

21E Mateus os levantou e entrou com eles na igreja, e o menino Jesus também estava com ele.

21And Matthew raised them, and went with them into the church, and the child Jesus was also with him.

22E Mateus, chegando à porta da igreja, pôs-se sobre uma certa pedra alta e imóvel; e quando toda a cidade se reuniu, especialmente os irmãos que acreditaram, começou a dizer: Homens e mulheres que aparecem à nossa vista, até então acreditando no universo, mas agora conhecendo Aquele que sustentou e fez o universo; até agora adorando o Sátiro e ridicularizados por dez mil falsos deuses, mas agora através de Jesus Cristo reconhecendo o único Deus, Senhor, Juiz; que deixaram de lado a imensurável grandeza do mal e revestiram-se de amor, que é de natureza semelhante à afeição, pelos homens; antes estranhos a Cristo, mas agora confessando-O como Senhor e Deus; anteriormente sem forma, mas agora transformados por meio de Cristo; - eis o cajado que você vê em minha mão, que Jesus, em quem você acreditou e acreditará, me deu; perceba agora o que acontece por meu intermédio e reconheça as riquezas da grandeza que Ele neste dia fará para você.

22And Matthew, having come to the gate of the church, stood upon a certain lofty and immoveable stone; and when the whole city ran together, especially the brethren who had believed, began to say: Men and women who appear in our sight, heretofore believing in the universe, but now knowing Him who has upheld and made the universe; until now worshipping the Satyr, and mocked by ten thousand false gods, but now through Jesus Christ acknowledging the one and only God, Lord, Judge; who have laid aside the immeasurable greatness of evil, and put on love, which is of like nature with affectionateness, towards men; once strangers to Christ, but now confessing Him Lord and God; formerly without form, but now transformed through Christ;—behold, the staff which you see in my hand, which Jesus, in whom you have believed and will believe, gave me; perceive now what comes to pass through me, and acknowledge the riches of the greatness which He will this day make for you.

23Pois eis que plantarei esta vara neste lugar e ela será um sinal para as vossas gerações e se tornará uma árvore grande, alta e florescente, e seu fruto belo à vista e agradável à vista; e dele sairá fragrância de perfumes, e enrolar-se-á nele uma videira cheia de cachos; e do seu topo desce mel, e toda criatura voadora se esconderá em seus ramos; e da sua raiz sairá uma fonte de água, cheia de nadadores e répteis, que dará de beber a toda a região em redor.

23For, behold, I shall plant this rod in this place, and it shall be a sign to your generations, and it shall become a tree, great and lofty and flourishing, and its fruit beautiful to the view and good to the sight; and the fragrance of perfumes shall come forth from it, and there shall be a vine twining round it, full of clusters; and from the top of it honey coming down, and every flying creature shall find covert in its branches; and a fountain of water shall come forth from the root of it, having swimming and creeping things, giving drink to all the country round about.

24E tendo dito isso, e invocando o nome do Senhor Jesus, ele fixou sua vara no chão, e imediatamente ela cresceu até um côvado; e a visão era estranha e maravilhosa.

24And having said this, and called upon the name of the Lord Jesus, he fixed his rod in the ground, and straightway it sprung up to one cubit; and the sight was strange and wonderful.

25Pois a vara imediatamente cresceu, aumentou de tamanho e se tornou uma grande árvore, como Mateus havia dito.

25For the rod having straightway shot up, increased in size, and grew into a great tree, as Matthew had said.

26E o apóstolo disse: Entrem na fonte e lavem seus corpos nela, e então comam dos frutos da árvore, e da videira e do mel, e bebam da fonte, e vocês serão transformados à semelhança dos homens; e depois disso, tendo entrado na igreja, vocês reconhecerão claramente que acreditaram no Deus vivo e verdadeiro.

26And the apostle said: Go into the fountain and wash your bodies in it, and then thus partake both of the fruits of the tree, and of the vine and the honey, and drink of the fountain, and you shall be transformed in your likeness to that of men; and after that, having gone into the church, you will clearly recognise that you have believed in the living and true God.

27E tendo feito todas estas coisas, viram-se transformados na semelhança de Mateus; então, tendo assim entrado na igreja, eles adoraram e glorificaram a Deus.

27And having done all these things, they saw themselves changed into the likeness of Matthew; then, having thus gone into the church, they worshipped and glorified God.

28E quando foram transformados, souberam que estavam nus; e correram apressadamente cada um para sua casa para cobrir a sua nudez, porque estavam envergonhados.

28And when they had been changed, they knew that they were naked; and they ran in haste each to his own house to cover their nakedness, because they were ashamed.

29E Mateus e Platão permaneceram na igreja passando a noite, e glorificando a Deus.

29And Matthew and Plato remained in the church spending the night, and glorifying God.

30E restaram também a esposa do rei, e seu filho e sua esposa, e eles oraram ao apóstolo para que lhes desse o selo em Cristo.

30And there remained also the king's wife, and his son and his wife, and they prayed the apostle to give them the seal in Christ.

31E Mateus deu ordens a Platão; e ele, saindo, batizou-os na água da fonte da árvore, em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo.

31And Matthew gave orders to Plato; and he, having gone forth, baptized them in the water of the fountain of the tree, in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost.

32E assim, depois disso, tendo entrado na igreja, eles comungaram dos santos mistérios de Cristo; e eles exultaram e passaram a noite, eles também junto com o apóstolo, tendo também vindo muitos outros com eles; e todos na igreja cantaram a noite inteira, glorificando a Deus.

32And so thereafter, having gone into the church, they communicated in the holy mysteries of Christ; and they exulted and passed the night, they also along with the apostle, many others having also come with them; and all in the church sang the whole night, glorifying God.

33E quando o amanhecer chegou plenamente, o abençoado Mateus, tendo acompanhado o bispo Platão, parou no lugar onde a vara havia sido plantada, e ele viu que a vara havia crescido e se tornado uma grande árvore, e perto dela uma videira enrolada em volta dela, e mel descendo de cima até sua raiz; e aquela árvore era ao mesmo tempo bela e florescente, como as plantas do paraíso, e um rio saía de sua raiz regando toda a terra da cidade de Myrna.

33And when the dawn had fully come, the blessed Matthew, having gone along with the bishop Plato, stood in the place in which the rod had been planted, and he sees the rod grown into a great tree, and near it a vine twined round it, and honey coming down from above even to its root; and that tree was at once beautiful and flourishing, like the plants in paradise, and a river proceeded from its root watering all the land of the city of Myrna.

34E todos correram juntos e comeram do fruto da árvore e da videira, como qualquer um quis.

34And all ran together, and ate of the fruit of the tree and the vine, just as any one wished.

35E quando o que aconteceu foi relatado no palácio, o rei Fulvanus, tendo sabido o que havia sido feito por Mateus sobre sua esposa, seu filho e sua nora, regozijou-se por um tempo com sua purificação; mas vendo que eles eram inseparáveis de Mateus, ele foi tomado de ira e raiva e tentou matá-lo no fogo.

35And when what had come to pass was reported in the palace, the king Fulvanus, having learned what had been done by Matthew about his wife, and his son, and his daughter-in-law, rejoiced for a time at their purification; but seeing that they were inseparable from Matthew, he was seized with rage and anger, and endeavoured to put him to death by fire.

36E naquela noite em que o rei pretendia impor as mãos sobre Mateus, Mateus viu Jesus dizer-lhe: Estou sempre contigo para te salvar, Mateus; seja forte e seja um homem.

36And on that night in which the king intended to lay hands on Matthew, Matthew saw Jesus saying to him: I am with thee always to save thee, Matthew; be strong, and be a man.

37E o bem-aventurado Mateus, tendo acordado e selado sobre todo o corpo, levantou-se de madrugada e entrou na igreja; e tendo dobrado os joelhos, orou fervorosamente.

37And the blessed Matthew, having awoke, and sealed himself over all the body, rose up at dawn, and proceeded into the church; and having bent his knees, prayed earnestly.

38Então, vindo o bispo e o clero, eles ficaram em comum em oração, glorificando a Deus.

38Then the bishop having come, and the clergy, they stood in common in prayer, glorifying God.

39E depois de terem terminado a oração, o bispo Platão disse: Paz seja contigo, Mateus, apóstolo de Cristo! E o bem-aventurado Mateus disse-lhe: Paz contigo! E quando eles se sentaram, o apóstolo disse ao bispo Platão e a todo o clero: Desejo que vocês, filhos, saibam, tendo Jesus me declarado, que o rei desta cidade vai enviar soldados contra mim, o diabo tendo entrado nele e o armado manifestamente contra nós.

39And after they had ended the prayer, the bishop Plato said: Peace to thee, Matthew, apostle of Christ! And the blessed Matthew said to him: Peace to you! And when they had sat down, the apostle said to the bishop Plato, and to all the clergy: I wish you, children, to know, Jesus having declared it to me, that the king of this city is going to send soldiers against me, the devil having entered into him, and manifestly armed him against us.

40Mas entreguemo-nos a Jesus, e Ele nos livrará de toda provação e livrará todos os que Nele creram.

40But let us give ourselves up to Jesus, and He will deliver us from every trial, and all who have believed in Him.

41E o rei, conspirando contra o bem-aventurado Mateus como deveria impor as mãos sobre ele, e vendo também que os crentes eram muitos, ficou muito perplexo e estava em grande dificuldade.

41And the king, plotting against the blessed Matthew how he should lay hands on him, and seeing also that the believers were very many, was very much at fault, and was in great difficulty.

42Portanto, o demônio perverso e impuro que havia saído da esposa do rei, e de seu filho, e de sua nora, posto em fuga por Mateus, tendo se transformado na semelhança de um soldado, ficou diante do rei, e disse-lhe: Ó rei, por que és assim prejudicado por este estranho e feiticeiro? Você não sabe que ele era publicano, mas agora foi chamado apóstolo por Jesus, que foi crucificado pelos judeus? Pois eis que tua esposa, e teu filho, e tua nora, instruídos por ele, creram nele, e junto com ele cantam na igreja.

42Therefore the wicked and unclean devil who had come forth from the king's wife, and his son, and his daughter-in-law, put to flight by Matthew, having transformed himself into the likeness of a soldier, stood before the king, and said to him: O king, why art thou thus put to the worse by this stranger and sorcerer? Knowest thou not that he was a publican, but now he has been called an apostle by Jesus, who was crucified by the Jews? For, behold, thy wife, and thy son, and thy daughter-in-law, instructed by him, have believed in him, and along with him sing in the church.

43E agora, eis que Mateus sai, e Platão com ele, e vão para a porta chamada Pesada; mas apressa-te, e encontrá-los-ás, e farás-lhe tudo o que for agradável aos teus olhos.

43And now, behold, Matthew is going forth, and Plato with him, and they are going to the gate called Heavy; but make haste, and thou wilt find them, and thou shalt do to him all that may be pleasing in thine eyes.

44O rei, tendo ouvido isso, e ficando ainda mais exasperado com o pretenso soldado, enviou quatro soldados contra o bem-aventurado Mateus, ameaçando-os, e dizendo: A menos que vocês tragam Mateus para mim, eu os queimarei vivos com fogo; e o castigo que ele sofrerá, vocês suportarão.

44The king having heard this, and being the more exasperated by the pretended soldier, sent against the blessed Matthew four soldiers, having threatened them, and said: Unless you bring Matthew to me, I shall burn you alive with fire; and the punishment which he is to undergo, you shall endure.

45E os soldados, assim ameaçados pelo rei, vão em armas até onde estão o apóstolo Mateus e o bispo Platão.

45And the soldiers, having been thus threatened by the king, go in arms to where the Apostle Matthew and the bishop Plato are.

46E quando chegaram perto deles, ouviram realmente a sua conversa, mas não viram ninguém.

46And when they came near them, they heard their speaking indeed, but saw no one.

47E tendo chegado, eles disseram ao rei: Rogamos-te, ó rei, fomos e não encontramos ninguém, mas apenas ouvimos vozes de pessoas conversando.

47And having come, they said to the king: We pray thee, O king, we went and found no one, but only heard the voices of persons talking.

48E o rei, enfurecido e ardendo como fogo, deu ordens para enviar outros dez soldados - devoradores de homens - dizendo-lhes: Vão furtivamente ao local, e despedacem-nos vivos, e comam Mateus, e Platão, que está com ele.

48And the king, being enraged, and having blazed up like fire, gave orders to send other ten soldiers—man-eaters—saying to them: Go stealthily to the place, and tear them in pieces alive, and eat up Matthew, and Plato, who is with him.

49E quando eles estavam prestes a se aproximar do bem-aventurado Mateus, o Senhor Jesus Cristo, vindo na forma de um lindo menino, segurando uma tocha de fogo, correu ao seu encontro, queimando-lhes os olhos.

49And when they were about to come near the blessed Matthew, the Lord Jesus Christ, having come in the likeness of a most beautiful boy, holding a torch of fire, ran to meet them, burning out their eyes.

50E eles, tendo gritado e jogado fora as armas, fugiram e foram até o rei, sem palavras.

50And they, having cried out and thrown their arms from them, fled, and came to the king, being speechless.

51E o demônio que antes havia aparecido ao rei na forma de um soldado, sendo novamente transformado na forma de um soldado, ficou diante do rei e disse-lhe: Tu vês, ó rei, que este estranho enfeitiçou todos eles.

51And the demon who had before appeared to the king in the form of a soldier, being again transformed into the form of a soldier, stood before the king, and said to him: Thou seest, O king, this stranger has bewitched them all.

52Aprenda, então, como você o levará.

52Learn, then, how thou shalt take him.

53O rei lhe disse: Diga-me primeiro onde está a sua força, para que eu saiba, e então me levantarei contra ele com grande força.

53The king says to him: Tell me first wherein his strength is, that I may know, and then I will draw up against him with a great force.

54E o demônio, compelido por um anjo, diz ao rei: Já que desejas ouvir com precisão sobre ele, ó rei, eu te contarei toda a verdade.

54And the demon, compelled by an angel, says to the king: Since thou wishest to hear accurately about him, O king, I will tell thee all the truth.

55Na verdade, a menos que ele esteja disposto a ser levado por você por vontade própria, você trabalha em vão e não será capaz de machucá-lo; mas se você quiser impor as mãos sobre ele, você ficará cego e ficará paralisado.

55Really, unless he shall be willing to be taken by thee of his own accord, thou labourest in vain, and thou wilt not be able to hurt him; but if thou wishest to lay hands on him, thou wilt be struck by him with blindness, and thou wilt be paralyzed.

56E se enviares uma multidão de soldados contra ele, também eles ficarão cegos e paralíticos.

56And if thou send a multitude of soldiers against him, they also will be struck with blindness, and will be paralyzed.

57E nós iremos, sim, sete demônios imundos, e imediatamente acabaremos com você e todo o seu acampamento, e destruiremos toda a cidade com raios, exceto aqueles que nomeiam aquele terrível e santo nome de Cristo; pois onde quer que um passo deles chegue, dali, perseguidos, fugimos.

57And we shall go, even seven unclean demons, and immediately make away with thee and thy whole camp, and destroy all the city with lightning, except those naming that awful and holy name of Christ; for wherever a footstep of theirs has come, thence, pursued, we flee.

58E ainda que lhe apliques fogo, para ele o fogo será orvalho; e se o encerrares numa fornalha, para ele a fornalha será uma igreja; e se você o acorrentar na prisão e selar o chão, as portas se abrirão para ele por sua própria vontade, e todos os que crêem nesse nome entrarão, mesmo eles, e dirão: Esta prisão é uma igreja do Deus vivo, e uma habitação santa para aqueles que vivem sozinhos.

58And even if thou shalt apply fire to him, to him the fire will be dew; and if thou shalt shut him up in a furnace, to him the furnace will be a church; and if thou shalt put him in chains in prison, and seal up the floors, the doors will open to him of their own accord, and all who believe in that name will go in, even they, and say, This prison is a church of the living God, and a holy habitation of those that live alone.

59Eis, ó rei, eu te contei toda a verdade.

59Behold, O king, I have told thee all the truth.

60O rei, portanto, diz ao pretenso soldado: Já que não conheço Mateus, venha comigo, e aponte-o para mim à distância, e tire de mim ouro, tanto quanto desejar, ou vá você mesmo, e com sua espada mate-o, e Platão, seu associado.

60The king therefore says to the pretended soldier: Since I do not know Matthew, come with me, and point him out to me from a distance, and take from me gold, as much as thou mayst wish, or go thyself, and with thy sword kill him, and Plato his associate.

61O demônio lhe diz: não posso matá-lo.

61The demon says to him: I cannot kill him.

62Não me atrevo nem a olhar para o seu rosto, vendo que ele destruiu toda a nossa geração através do nome de Cristo, proclamado através dele.

62I dare not even look into his face, seeing that he has destroyed all our generation through the name of Christ, proclaimed through him.

63O rei lhe diz: E quem és tu? E ele diz: Eu sou o demônio que habitou em tua mulher, e em teu filho, e em tua nora; e meu nome é Asmodeu; e este Mateus me expulsou deles.

63The king says to him: And who art thou? And he says: I am the demon who dwelt in thy wife, and in thy son, and in thy daughter-in-law; and my name is Asmodaeus; and this Matthew drove me out of them.

64E agora, eis que tua esposa, e teu filho, e tua nora cantam junto com ele na igreja.

64And now, behold, thy wife, and thy son, and thy daughter-in-law sing along with him in the church.

65E eu sei, ó rei, que tu também depois disso acreditarás nele.

65And I know, O king, that thou also after this wilt believe in him.

66O rei diz-lhe: Quem quer que sejas, espírito de muitas formas, conjuro-te pelo Deus que aquele a quem chamas Mateus proclama, afasta-te daqui sem fazer mal a ninguém.

66The king says to him: Whoever thou art, spirit of many shapes, I adjure thee by the God whom he whom thou callest Matthew proclaims, depart hence without doing hurt to any one.

67E imediatamente o demônio, não mais como um soldado, mas como fumaça, tornou-se invisível; e enquanto fugia ele gritou: Ó nome secreto, armado contra nós, peço-te, Mateus, servo do Deus santo, perdoe-me, e não permanecerei mais nesta cidade.

67And straightway the demon, no longer like a soldier, but like smoke, became invisible; and as he fled he cried out: O secret name, armed against us, I pray thee, Matthew, servant of the holy God, pardon me, and I will no longer remain in this city.

68Mantenha o que é seu; mas eu irei para o fogo eterno.

68Keep thou thine own; but I go away into the fire everlasting.

69Então o rei, tomado de grande medo pela resposta do demônio, permaneceu quieto naquele dia.

69Then the king, affected with great fear at the answer of the demon, remained quiet that day.

70E chegando a noite, e ele não conseguindo dormir porque estava com fome, levantou-se de madrugada e entrou na igreja, com apenas dois soldados sem armas, para prender Mateus por astúcia, para matá-lo.

70And the night having come, and he not being able to sleep because he was hungry, leaped up at dawn, and went into the church, with only two soldiers without arms, to take Matthew by craft, that he might kill him.

71E, tendo chamado dois amigos de Mateus, disse-lhes: Mostrai a Mateus, diz ele, que desejo ser seu discípulo.

71And having summoned two friends of Matthew, he said to them: Show to Matthew, says he, that I wish to be his disciple.

72E Mateus, ouvindo e conhecendo a astúcia do tirano, e tendo sido avisado também pela visão do Senhor para ele, saiu da igreja, conduzido pela mão por Platão, e parou no portão da igreja.

72And Matthew hearing, and knowing the craft of the tyrant, and having been warned also by the vision of the Lord to him, went forth out of the church, led by the hand by Plato, and stood in the gate of the church.

73E disseram ao rei: Eis Mateus na porta! E ele diz: Quem ele é, ou onde está, não vejo.

73And they say to the king: Behold Matthew in the gate! And he says: Who he is, or where he is, I see not.

74E eles lhe disseram: Eis que ele está à tua vista.

74And they said to him: Behold, he is in sight of thee.

75E ele diz: Enquanto isso não vejo ninguém.

75And he says: All the while I see nobody.

76Pois ele havia sido cegado pelo poder de Deus.

76For he had been blinded by the power of God.

77E começou a gritar: Ai de mim, miserável! que mal me sobreveio, pois meus olhos foram cegados e todos os meus membros paralisados? Ó Asmodeu Belzebu Satanás! tudo o que você me disse veio sobre mim.

77And he began to cry out: Woe to me, miserable! what evil has come upon me, for my eyes have been blinded, and all my limbs paralyzed? O Asmodaeus Beelzebul Satan! all that thou hast said to me has come upon me.

78Mas peço-te, Mateus, servo de Deus, que me perdoe como arauto do bom Deus; pois certamente o Jesus proclamado por ti há três dias durante a noite apareceu-me completamente resplandecente como um raio, como um belo jovem, e disse-me: Já que estás a alimentar maus conselhos na maldade do teu coração em relação ao meu servo Mateus, saiba que lhe revelei que através de ti será a libertação do seu corpo.

78But I pray thee, Matthew, servant of God, forgive me as the herald of the good God; for assuredly the Jesus proclaimed by thee three days ago through the night appeared to me altogether resplendent as with lightning, like a beautiful young man, and said to me, Since thou art entertaining evil counsels in the wickedness of thine heart in regard to my servant Matthew, know I have disclosed to him that through thee will be the release of his body.

79E imediatamente o vi subindo ao céu.

79And straightway I saw him going up into heaven.

80Se, portanto, ele é o teu Deus, e se ele deseja que o teu corpo seja enterrado em nossa cidade para um testemunho da salvação das gerações seguintes, e para o banimento dos demônios, eu conhecerei a verdade por mim mesmo por meio disso, pela imposição de mãos sobre mim, e recuperarei minha visão.

80If therefore he is thy God, and if he wishes thy body to be buried in our city for a testimony of the salvation of the generations after this, and for the banishing of the demons, I shall know the truth for myself by this, by thee laying on hands upon me, and I shall receive my sight.

81E o apóstolo impôs-lhe as mãos sobre os olhos e disse: Efatá: Jesus, fê-lo recuperar a visão instantaneamente.

81And the apostle having laid his hands upon his eyes, and saying Ephphatha, Jesus, he made him receive his sight instantly.

82E imediatamente o rei, agarrando o apóstolo e conduzindo-o pela mão direita, levou-o de forma astuta ao palácio; e Platão estava à esquerda de Mateus, acompanhando-o e segurando-o.

82And straightway the king, laying hold of the apostle, and leading him by the right hand, brought him by craft into the palace; and Plato was on Matthew's left hand, going along with him, and keeping hold of him.

83Então Mateus diz: Ó tirano astuto, até quando não cumprirás as obras de teu pai, o diabo? E ele ficou furioso com o que foi dito; pois ele percebeu que lhe infligiria uma morte mais amarga.

83Then Matthew says: O crafty tyrant, how long dost thou not fulfil the works of thy father the devil? And he was enraged at what had been said; for he perceived that he would inflict upon him a more bitter death.

84Pois ele resolveu matá-lo pelo fogo.

84For he resolved to put him to death by fire.

85E ordenou que viessem vários carrascos e o conduzissem ao local à beira-mar, onde costumava acontecer a execução de malfeitores, dizendo aos carrascos: Ouvi dizer, diz ele, que o Deus que ele proclama livra do fogo aqueles que acreditam nele.

85And he commanded several executioners to come, and to lead him away to the place by the seashore, where the execution of malefactors was wont to take place, saying to the executioners: I hear, says he, that the God whom he proclaims delivers from fire those who believe in him.

86Depois de deitá-lo, portanto, de costas no chão, e esticá-lo, fure-lhe as mãos e os pés com pregos de ferro, e cubra-o com papel, depois de untá-lo com óleo de golfinho, e cubra-o com enxofre e asfalto e piche, e coloque estopa e mato por cima.

86Having laid him, therefore, on the ground on his back, and stretched him out, pierce his hands and feet with iron nails, and cover him over with paper, having smeared it with dolphins' oil, and cover him up with brimstone and asphalt and pitch, and put tow and brushwood above.

87Assim aplique o fogo nele; e se alguém da mesma tribo que ele se levantar contra você, ele receberá o mesmo castigo.

87Thus apply the fire to him; and if any of the same tribe with him rise up against you, he shall get the same punishment.

88E o apóstolo exortou os irmãos a permanecerem inabaláveis, e que se alegrassem, e o acompanhassem com grande mansidão, cantando e louvando a Deus, porque foram considerados dignos de ter as relíquias do apóstolo.

88And the apostle exhorted the brethren to remain undismayed, and that they should rejoice, and accompany him with great meekness, singing and praising God, because they were deemed worthy to have the relics of the apostle.

89Tendo chegado ao local, os algozes, como feras extremamente malignas, prenderam no chão as mãos e os pés de Mateus com pregos compridos; e tendo feito tudo como lhes foi ordenado, aplicaram o fogo.

89Having therefore come to the place, the executioners, like most evil wild beasts, pinned down to the ground Matthew's hands and feet with long nails; and having done everything as they had been bid, applied the fire.

90E eles realmente trabalharam em estreita colaboração, acendendo tudo; mas todo o fogo se transformou em orvalho, de modo que os irmãos, regozijando-se, clamaram: O único Deus é o dos cristãos, que auxilia Mateus, em quem também acreditamos: o único Deus é o dos cristãos, que preserva o seu próprio apóstolo no fogo.

90And they indeed laboured closely, kindling it all round; but all the fire was changed into dew, so that the brethren, rejoicing, cried out: The only God is the Christians', who assists Matthew, in whom also we have believed: the only God is the Christians', who preserves His own apostle in the fire.

91E pela voz a cidade foi abalada.

91And by the voice the city was shaken.

92E alguns dos algozes, tendo saído, disseram ao rei: Nós, de fato, ó rei, por todo artifício de vingança, acendemos o fogo; mas o feiticeiro com um certo nome o apaga, invocando Cristo e invocando sua cruz; e os cristãos que o cercam brincam com o fogo, e andando nele descalços, riem de nós, e fugimos envergonhados.

92And some of the executioners, having gone forth, said to the king: We indeed, O king, by every contrivance of vengeance, have kindled the fire; but the sorcerer by a certain name puts it out, calling upon Christ, and invoking his cross; and the Christians surrounding him play with the fire, and walking in it with naked feet, laugh at us, and we have fled ashamed.

93Então ele ordenou que uma multidão carregasse brasas da fornalha do banho no palácio, e os doze deuses de ouro e prata; e coloque-os, diz ele, em um círculo ao redor do feiticeiro, para que ele não possa de alguma forma enfeitiçar o fogo da fornalha do palácio.

93Then he ordered a multitude to carry coals of fire from the furnace of the bath in the palace, and the twelve gods of gold and silver; and place them, says he, in a circle round the sorcerer, lest he may even somehow bewitch the fire from the furnace of the palace.

94E havendo muitos carrascos e soldados, alguns carregavam as brasas; e outros, carregando os deuses, os trouxeram.

94And there being many executioners and soldiers, some carried the coals; and others, bearing the gods, brought them.

95E o rei os acompanhou, vigiando para que nenhum dos cristãos roubasse um de seus deuses ou enfeitiçasse o fogo.

95And the king accompanied them, watching lest any of the Christians should steal one of his gods, or bewitch the fire.

96E quando chegaram perto do lugar onde o apóstolo foi pregado, seu rosto estava voltado para o céu, e todo o seu corpo estava coberto com o papel, e muito mato sobre seu corpo até a altura de dez côvados.

96And when they came near the place where the apostle was nailed down, his face was looking towards heaven, and all his body was covered over with the paper, and much brushwood over his body to the height of ten cubits.

97E tendo ordenado aos soldados que colocassem os deuses em círculo ao redor de Mateus, a cinco côvados de distância, firmemente presos para que não caíssem, ele novamente ordenou que o carvão fosse jogado e acendesse o fogo em todos os pontos.

97And having ordered the soldiers to set the gods in a circle round Matthew, five cubits off, securely fastened that they might not fall, again he ordered the coal to be thrown on, and to kindle the fire at all points.

98E Mateus, olhando para o céu, clamou: Adonai eloi sabaoth marmari marmunth; isto é, ó Deus Pai, ó Senhor Jesus Cristo, livra-me e queima os deuses que eles adoram; e que o fogo também persiga o rei até o seu palácio, mas não para a sua destruição: pois talvez ele se arrependa e se converta.

98And Matthew, having looked up to heaven, cried out, Adonai eloi sabaoth marmari marmunth; that is, O God the Father, O Lord Jesus Christ, deliver me, and burn down their gods which they worship; and let the fire also pursue the king even to his palace, but not to his destruction: for perhaps he will repent and be converted.

99E quando viu o fogo ter uma altura monstruosa, o rei, pensando que Mateus estava queimado, riu alto e disse: A tua magia foi de alguma utilidade para ti, Mateus? Seu Jesus pode agora lhe dar alguma ajuda? E quando ele disse isso, uma terrível maravilha apareceu; pois todo o fogo junto com a lenha se afastou de Mateus e foi derramado ao redor de seus deuses, de modo que nada de ouro ou prata foi mais visto; e o rei fugiu e disse: Ai de mim, que meus deuses foram destruídos pela repreensão de Mateus, cujo peso era mil talentos de ouro e mil talentos de prata.

99And when he saw the fire to be monstrous in height, the king, thinking that Matthew was burnt up, laughed aloud, and said: Has thy magic been of any avail to thee, Matthew? Can thy Jesus now give thee any help? And as he said this a dreadful wonder appeared; for all the fire along with the wood went away from Matthew, and was poured round about their gods, so that nothing of the gold or the silver was any more seen; and the king fled, and said: Woe's me, that my gods are destroyed by the rebuke of Matthew, of which the weight was a thousand talents of gold and a thousand talents of silver.

100Better are the gods of stone and of earthenware, in that they are neither melted nor stolen.

101E quando o fogo destruiu totalmente seus deuses e queimou muitos soldados, aconteceu novamente outra maravilha estranha.

101And when the fire had thus utterly destroyed their gods, and burnt up many soldiers, there came to pass again another stranger wonder.

102Pois o fogo, na forma de um grande e terrível dragão, perseguiu o tirano até o palácio e correu de um lado para outro ao redor do rei, não o deixando entrar no palácio.

102For the fire, in the likeness of a great and dreadful dragon, chased the tyrant as far as the palace, and ran hither and thither round the king, not letting him go into the palace.

103E o rei, perseguido pelo fogo, e não autorizado a entrar em seu palácio, voltou-se para onde Mateus estava e gritou, dizendo: Rogo-te, quem quer que sejas, ó homem, seja mágico, ou feiticeiro, ou deus, ou anjo de Deus, a quem uma pira tão grande não tocou, remove de mim este dragão terrível e ardente; esqueça o mal que cometi, como também quando me fizeste recuperar a visão.

103And the king, chased by the fire, and not allowed to go into his palace, turned back to where Matthew was, and cried out, saying: I beseech thee, whoever thou art, O man, whether magician or sorcerer or god, or angel of God, whom so great a pyre has not touched, remove from me this dreadful and fiery dragon; forget the evil I have done, as also when thou madest me receive my sight.

104E Mateus, tendo repreendido o fogo, e as chamas apagadas, e o dragão tornado invisível, estendendo os olhos para o céu, e orando em hebraico, e encomendando o seu espírito ao Senhor, disse: Paz convosco! E, tendo glorificado ao Senhor, foi descansar por volta da hora sexta.

104And Matthew, having rebuked the fire, and the flames having been extinguished, and the dragon having become invisible, stretching his eyes to heaven, and praying in Hebrew, and commending his spirit to the Lord, said: Peace to you! And having glorified the Lord, he went to his rest about the sixth hour.

105Então o rei, tendo ordenado que viessem mais soldados, e que a cama fosse trazida do palácio, que tinha uma grande exibição de ouro, ordenou que o apóstolo fosse colocado sobre ela e levado para o palácio.

105Then the king, having ordered more soldiers to come, and the bed to be brought from the palace, which had a great show of gold, he ordered the apostle to be laid on it, and carried to the palace.

106E o corpo do apóstolo jazia como se dormisse, e o seu manto e a sua túnica não manchados pelo fogo; e às vezes eles o viam na cama, e às vezes seguindo, e às vezes indo antes da cama, e com a mão direita colocada sobre a cabeça de Platão, e cantando junto com a multidão, de modo que tanto o rei quanto os soldados, com a multidão, ficaram impressionados.

106And the body of the apostle was lying as if in sleep, and his robe and his tunic unstained by the fire; and sometimes they saw him on the bed, and sometimes following, and sometimes going before the bed, and with his right hand put upon Plato's head, and singing along with the multitude, so that both the king and the soldiers, with the crowd, were struck with astonishment.

107E muitos enfermos e endemoninhados, tendo apenas tocado a cama, foram curados; e todos os que tinham aparência selvagem, naquela mesma hora foram transformados na semelhança de outros homens.

107And many diseased persons and demoniacs, having only touched the bed, were made sound; and as many as were savage in appearance, in that same hour were changed into the likeness of other men.

108E quando a cama estava indo para o palácio, todos vimos Mateus levantando-se, por assim dizer, da cama e indo para o céu, conduzido pela mão por um lindo menino; e doze homens em vestes brilhantes vieram ao seu encontro, tendo coroas de ouro que nunca perdem o brilho em suas cabeças; e vimos como aquela criança coroou Mateus, para ser como eles, e num relâmpago eles foram para o céu.

108And as the bed was going into the palace, we all saw Matthew rising up, as it were, from the bed, and going into heaven, led by the hand by a beautiful boy; and twelve men in shining garments came to meet him, having never-fading and golden crowns on their head; and we saw how that child crowned Matthew, so as to be like them, and in a flash of lightning they went away to heaven.

109E o rei parou no portão do palácio e ordenou que ninguém entrasse, exceto os soldados que carregavam a cama.

109And the king stood at the gate of the palace, and ordered that no one should come in but the soldiers carrying the bed.

110E, fechando as portas, mandou fazer um caixão de ferro, colocou nele o corpo de Mateus e selou-o com chumbo; através do portão leste do palácio, à meia-noite, colocou-o em um barco, sem que ninguém soubesse, e jogou-o nas profundezas do mar.

110And having shut the doors, he ordered an iron coffin to be made, put the body of Matthew into it, and sealed it up with lead; through the eastern gate of the palace at midnight put it into a boat, no one knowing of it, and threw it into the deep part of the sea.

111E durante toda a noite os irmãos permaneceram diante do portão do palácio, passando a noite e cantando; e quando o amanhecer surgiu, ouviu-se uma voz: Ó bispo Platão, carrega o Evangelho e o Saltério de David; vá com a multidão dos irmãos para o leste do palácio, e cante o Aleluia, e leia o Evangelho, e traga como oferta o pão sagrado; e tendo espremido três cachos da videira em um copo, comungue comigo, como o Senhor Jesus nos mostrou como oferecer quando Ele ressuscitou dos mortos no terceiro dia.

111And through the whole night the brethren remained before the gate of the palace, spending the night, and singing; and when the dawn rose there was a voice: O bishop Plato, carry the Gospel and the Psalter of David; go along with the multitude of the brethren to the east of the palace, and sing the Alleluia, and read the Gospel, and bring as an offering the holy bread; and having pressed three clusters from the vine into a cup, communicate with me, as the Lord Jesus showed us how to offer up when He rose from the dead on the third day.

112E o bispo, tendo corrido para a igreja, e tomado o Evangelho e o Saltério de Davi, e tendo reunido os presbíteros e a multidão dos irmãos, veio para o leste do palácio na hora do nascer do sol; e ordenando ao que cantava que subisse sobre uma pedra elevada, começou a louvar a Deus cantando um cântico: Preciosa aos olhos de Deus é a morte dos Seus santos.

112And the bishop having run into the church, and taken the Gospel and the Psalter of David, and having assembled the presbyters and the multitude of the brethren, came to the east of the palace at the hour of sunrise; and having ordered the one who was singing to go upon a certain lofty stone, he began to praise in singing of a song to God: Precious in the sight of God is the death of His saints.

113E ainda: deitei-me e dormi; Eu me levantei: porque o Senhor me sustentará.

113And again: I laid me down and slept; I arose: because the Lord will sustain me.

114E ouviram o canto de um cântico de David: Porventura aquele que está morto não ressuscitará? Agora eu o ressuscitarei para mim mesmo, diz o Senhor.

114And they listened to the singing of a song of David: Shall he that is dead not rise again? Now I shall raise him up for myself, saith the Lord.

115E todos gritaram o Aleluia.

115And all shouted out the Alleluia.

116E o bispo leu o Evangelho e todos gritaram: Glória a Ti, glorificado no céu e na terra.

116And the bishop read the Gospel, and all cried out: Glory to Thee, Thou who hast been glorified in heaven and on earth.

117E então eles ofereceram o presente da oferta sagrada para Mateus; e tendo participado em ação de graças dos mistérios imaculados e vivificantes de Cristo, todos eles glorificaram a Deus.

117And so then they offered the gift of the holy offering for Matthew; and having partaken for thanksgiving of the undefiled and life-giving mysteries of Christ, they all glorified God.

118E era por volta da hora sexta, e Platão vê o mar oposto a cerca de sete estádios de distância; e eis que Mateus estava em pé sobre o mar, e dois homens, um de cada lado, em vestes resplandecentes, e o lindo menino na frente deles.

118And it was about the sixth hour, and Plato sees the sea opposite about seven furlongs off; and, behold, Matthew was standing on the sea, and two men, one on each side, in shining garments, and the beautiful boy in front of them.

119E todos os irmãos viram estas coisas e os ouviram dizer Amém, Aleluia.

119And all the brethren saw these things, and they heard them saying Amen, Alleluia.

120E via-se o mar fixo como uma pedra de cristal, e o lindo menino diante deles, quando do fundo do mar surgiu uma cruz, e na ponta da cruz subindo o caixão no qual estava o corpo de Mateus; e na hora da perfuração na cruz, o menino colocou o caixão no chão, atrás do palácio, a leste, onde o bispo havia oferecido a oferenda por Mateus.

120And one could see the sea fixed like a stone of crystal, and the beautiful boy in front of them, when out of the depth of the sea a cross came up, and at the end of the cross the coffin going up in which was the body of Matthew; and in the hour of the piercing on the cross, the boy placed the coffin on the ground, behind the palace towards the east, where the bishop had offered the offering for Matthew.

121E o rei tendo visto estas coisas da parte superior da casa, e ficando aterrorizado, saiu do palácio, e correu e adorou em direção ao leste no caixão, e prostrou-se diante do bispo, e dos presbíteros, e dos diáconos, em arrependimento e confissão, dizendo: Verdadeiramente eu creio no verdadeiro Deus, Cristo Jesus.

121And the king having seen these things from the upper part of the house, and being terror-struck, went forth from the palace, and ran and worshipped towards the east at the coffin, and fell down before the bishop, and the presbyters, and the deacons, in repentance and confession, saying: Truly I believe in the true God, Christ Jesus.

122Eu imploro, dê-me o selo em Cristo, e eu lhe darei meu palácio, em testemunho de Mateus, e você colocará o caixão em minha cama dourada, na grande sala de jantar; somente, tendo-me batizado nele, comunique-me a Eucaristia de Cristo.

122I entreat, give me the seal in Christ, and I will give you my palace, in testimony of Matthew, and you shall put the coffin upon my golden bed, in the great dining-room; only, having baptized me in it, communicate to me the Eucharist of Christ.

123E o bispo tendo orado e ordenado que ele tirasse a roupa, e tendo-o examinado por um longo tempo, e ele tendo confessado e chorado pelo que havia feito, tendo-o selado e ungido com óleo, lançou-o no mar, em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo.

123And the bishop having prayed, and ordered him to take off his clothes, and having examined him for a long time, and he having confessed and wept over what he had done, having sealed him, and anointed him with oil, put him down into the sea, in the name of Father, and Son, and Holy Ghost.

124E quando ele saiu da água, ordenou-lhe que vestisse roupas esplêndidas, e então, tendo dado louvor e agradecimento, comunicando o pão sagrado e o cálice misturado, o bispo primeiro os deu ao rei, dizendo: Que este corpo de Cristo, e este cálice, Seu sangue derramado por nós, sejam para ti para a remissão dos pecados para a vida.

124And when he came up from the water he ordered him to put on himself splendid garments, and so then having given praise and thanks, communicating the holy bread and mixed cup, the bishop first gave them to the king, saying: Let this body of Christ, and this cup, His blood shed for us, be to thee for the remission of sins unto life.

125E uma voz foi ouvida lá do alto: Amém, amém, amém.

125And a voice was heard from on high: Amen, amen, amen.

126E quando ele comungou assim com medo e alegria, o apóstolo apareceu e disse: Rei Fulvanus, teu nome não será mais Fulvanus; mas você será chamado Mateus.

126And when he had thus communicated in fear and joy, the apostle appeared and said: King Fulvanus, thy name shall no longer be Fulvanus; but thou shalt be called Matthew.

127E tu, filho do rei, não serás mais chamado Fulvanus, mas também Mateus; e tu Zifagia, a esposa do rei, serás chamada Sophia; e Erva, a esposa de seu filho, será chamada Synesis.

127And thou, the son of the king, shall no longer be called Fulvanus, but Matthew also; and thou Ziphagia, the wife of the king, shall be called Sophia; and Erva, the wife of your son, shall be called Synesis.

128E estes teus nomes estarão escritos nos céus, e não faltará descendência dos vossos lombos de geração em geração.

128And these names of yours shall be written in the heavens, and there shall not fail of your loins from generation to generation.

129E naquela mesma hora Mateus nomeou o rei presbítero, e ele tinha trinta e sete anos; e nomeou o filho do rei diácono, tendo dezessete anos; e à esposa do rei ele nomeou uma presbítera; e à esposa de seu filho ele nomeou uma diaconisa, e ela também tinha dezessete anos.

129And in that same hour Matthew appointed the king a presbyter, and he was thirty-seven years old; and the king's son he appointed deacon, being seventeen years old; and the king's wife he appointed a presbyteress; and his son's wife he appointed a deaconess, and she also was seventeen years old.

130E então ele os abençoou, dizendo: A bênção e a graça de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo estarão convosco por toda a eternidade.

130And then he thus blessed them, saying: The blessing and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ shall be with you to time everlasting.

131Então o rei, tendo acordado do sono, e regozijado com toda a sua casa com a visão do santo apóstolo Mateus, louvou a Deus.

131Then the king, having awakened out of sleep, and rejoiced with all his house at the vision of the holy Apostle Matthew, praised God.

132E o rei, tendo entrado no seu palácio, quebrou todos os ídolos e deu um decreto aos do seu reino, escrevendo assim: Rei Mateus, a todos os que estão sob o meu reino, saudações.

132And the king, having gone into his palace, broke all the idols to pieces, and gave a decree to those in his kingdom, writing thus: King Matthew, to all those under my kingdom, greeting.

133Tendo Cristo aparecido na Terra e salvado a raça humana, descobriu-se que os chamados deuses eram enganadores, destruidores de almas e conspiradores contra a raça humana.

133Christ having appeared upon earth, and having saved the human race, the so-called gods have been found to be deceivers, and soul-destroyers, and plotters against the human race.

134De onde, tendo a graça divina brilhado e vindo até nós, e tendo chegado ao conhecimento do engano dos ídolos, que é vão e falso, pareceu bom à nossa divindade que não deveria haver muitos deuses, mas um, e apenas um, o Deus nos céus.

134Whence, divine grace having shone abroad, and come even to us, and we having come to the knowledge of the deception of the idols, that it is vain and false, it has seemed good to our divinity that there should not be many gods, but one, and one only, the God in the heavens.

135E você, tendo recebido este nosso decreto, cumpra o seu significado, e quebre e destrua todos os ídolos; e se alguém for descoberto a partir de agora servindo ídolos, ou escondendo-os, que tal pessoa seja submetida ao castigo pela espada.

135And you, having received this our decree, keep to the purport of it, and break to pieces and destroy every idol; and if any one shall be detected from this time forth serving idols, or concealing them, let such an one be subjected to punishment by the sword.

136Adeus a todos, porque também estamos bem.

136Farewell all, because we also are well.

137E quando esta ordem foi dada, todos, regozijando-se e exultando, quebraram os seus ídolos, clamando e dizendo: Só existe um Deus, aquele que está nos céus, que faz o bem aos homens.

137And when this order was given out, all, rejoicing and exulting, broke their idols to pieces, crying out and saying: There is one only God, He who is in the heavens, who does good to men.

138E depois que todas essas coisas aconteceram, Mateus, o apóstolo de Cristo, apareceu ao bispo Platão e disse-lhe: Platão, servo de Deus e nosso irmão, saibas que depois de três anos será o teu descanso no Senhor e a exultação pelos séculos dos séculos.

138And after all these things had come to pass, Matthew the apostle of Christ appeared to the bishop Plato, and said to him: Plato, servant of God, and our brother, be it known unto thee, that after three years shall be thy rest in the Lord, and exultation to ages of ages.

139E o próprio rei, a quem pelo meu próprio nome chamei Mateus, receberá o trono do teu bispado, e depois dele seu filho.

139And the king himself, whom after my own name I have called Matthew, shall receive the throne of thy bishopric, and after him his son.

140E ele, tendo dito Paz a ti e a todos os santos, foi para o céu.

140And he, having said Peace to thee and all the saints, went to heaven.

141E depois de três anos o bispo Platão descansou no Senhor.

141And after three years the bishop Plato rested in the Lord.

142E o rei Mateus o sucedeu, tendo cedido voluntariamente seu reino a outro, de onde lhe foi dada graça contra demônios imundos, e ele curou todas as aflições.

142And King Matthew succeeded him, having given up his kingdom willingly to another, whence there was given him grace against unclean demons, and he cured every affliction.

143E ele promoveu seu filho para ser presbítero e o tornou o segundo depois de si mesmo.

143And he advanced his son to be a presbyter, and made him second to himself.

144E São Mateus terminou a sua carreira no país dos devoradores de homens, na cidade de Myrna, no dia dezesseis do mês de novembro, reinando Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, a quem seja a glória e a força, agora e sempre, e pelos séculos dos séculos, Amém.

144And Saint Matthew finished his course in the country of the man-eaters, in the city of Myrna, on the sixteenth of the month of November, our Lord Jesus Christ reigning, to whom be glory and strength, now and ever, and to ages of ages, Amen.
