Testamento dos 12 Patriarcas 1

1A cópia do Testamento de Rúben, a saber, as ordens que ele deu a seus filhos antes que ele morresse no centésimo vigésimo quinto ano de sua vida. Dois anos após a morte de José, seu irmão, quando Rúben adoeceu, seus filhos e os filhos de seus filhos se reuniram para visitá-lo.

1The copy of the Testament of Reuben, even the commands which he gave his sons before he died in the hundred and twenty-fifth year of his life. Two years after the death of Joseph his brother, when Reuben fell ill, his sons and his sons' sons were gathered together to visit him.

2E ele lhes disse: Meus filhos, eis que estou morrendo e vou pelo caminho de meus pais. E vendo ali Judá, e Gade, e Aser, seus irmãos, disse-lhes: Levantai-me, para que eu possa contar a meus irmãos e a meus filhos as coisas que tenho ocultado em meu coração, pois eis que agora, enfim, estou partindo.

2And he said to them: My children, behold I am dying, and go the way of my fathers. And seeing there Judah, and Gad, and Asher, his brethren, he said to them: Raise me up, that I may tell to my brethren and to my children what things I have hidden in my heart, for behold now at length I am passing away.

3E ele se levantou e os beijou, e lhes disse: Ouvi, meus irmãos, e vós, meus filhos, dai ouvidos a Rúben, vosso pai, nos mandamentos que vos ordeno. E eis que invoco como testemunha contra vós neste dia o Deus do céu, para que não andeis nos pecados da mocidade e da fornicação, nos quais fui derramado e profanei o leito de meu pai Jacó.

3And he arose and kissed them, and said unto them: Hear, my brethren, and do ye, my children, give ear to Reuben your father in the commands which I give unto you. And behold I call to witness against you this day the God of heaven, that ye walk not in the sins of youth and fornication, wherein I was poured out, and defiled the bed of my father Jacob.

4E digo-vos que ele me feriu com uma dolorosa praga em meus lombos por sete meses; e se meu pai Jacó não tivesse orado por mim ao Senhor, o Senhor me teria destruído. Pois eu tinha trinta anos de idade quando cometi a coisa má perante o Senhor, e por sete meses estive enfermo até a morte.

4And I tell you that he smote me with a sore plague in my loins for seven months; and had not my father Jacob prayed for me to the Lord, the Lord would have destroyed me. For I was thirty years old when I wrought the evil thing before the Lord, and for seven months I was sick unto death.

5E depois disso me arrependi com propósito firme de minha alma por sete anos perante o Senhor. E vinho e bebida forte não bebi, e carne não entrou em minha boca, e não comi comida aprazível; mas lamentei o meu pecado, pois foi grande, tal como não houve em Israel.

5And after this I repented with set purpose of my soul for seven years before the Lord. And wine and strong drink I drank not, and flesh entered not into my mouth, and I eat no pleasant food; but I mourned over my sin, for it was great, such as had not been in Israel.

6E agora ouvi-me, meus filhos, as coisas que vi a respeito dos sete espíritos do engano, quando me arrependi. Sete espíritos, portanto, estão designados contra o homem, e são os chefes nas obras da juventude. E sete outros espíritos lhe são dados na sua criação, para que por meio deles seja feita toda obra do homem.

6And now hear me, my children, what things I saw concerning the seven spirits of deceit, when I repented. Seven spirits therefore are appointed against man, and they are the leaders in the works of youth. And seven other spirits are given to him at his creation, that through them should be done every work of man.

7O primeiro é o espírito da vida, com o qual a constituição (do homem) é criada. O segundo é o sentido da visão, com o qual surge o desejo. O terceiro é o sentido do ouvido, com o qual vem o ensino. O quarto é o sentido do olfato, com o qual os sabores são dados para aspirar ar e respiração.

7The first is the spirit of life, with which the constitution (of man) is created. The second is the sense of sight, with which ariseth desire. The third is the sense of hearing, with which cometh teaching. The fourth is the sense of smell, with which tastes are given to draw air and breath.

8O quinto é o poder da fala, com o qual vem o conhecimento. O sexto é o sentido do paladar, com o qual vem o comer carnes e bebidas; e por ele a força é produzida, pois no alimento está o fundamento da força. O sétimo é o poder da procriação e da relação sexual, com o qual, através do amor ao prazer, os pecados entram.

8The fifth is the power of speech, with which cometh knowledge. The sixth is the sense of taste, with which cometh the eating of meats and drinks; and by it strength is produced, for in food is the foundation of strength. The seventh is the power of procreation and sexual intercourse, with which through love of pleasure sins enter in.

9Por isso é o último na ordem da criação, e o primeiro na da juventude, porque é cheio de ignorância, e conduz o jovem como um cego para uma cova, e como um animal para o precipício.

9Wherefore it is the last in order of creation, and the first in that of youth, because it is filled with ignorance, and leadeth the youth as a blind man to a pit, and as a beast to a precipice.

10Além de todos estes há um oitavo espírito do sono, com o qual se opera o transe da natureza e a imagem da morte. Com estes espíritos se misturam os espíritos do erro. Primeiro, o espírito da fornicação está assentado na natureza e nos sentidos; o segundo, o espírito da insaciabilidade, no ventre; o terceiro, o espírito da peleja, no fígado e na vesícula.

10Besides all these there is an eighth spirit of sleep, with which is brought about the trance of nature and the image of death. With these spirits are mingled the spirits of error. First, the spirit of fornication is seated in the nature and in the senses; the second, the spirit of insatiableness, in the belly; the third, the spirit of fighting, in the liver and gall.

11O quarto é o espírito do servilismo e da astúcia, para que através da atenção oficiosa alguém possa parecer agradável. O quinto é o espírito da soberba, para que alguém seja jactancioso e arrogante. O sexto é o espírito da mentira, na perdição e no ciúme para praticar enganos e ocultações de parentes e amigos.

11The fourth is the spirit of obsequiousness and chicanery, that through officious attention one may be fair in seeming. The fifth is the spirit of pride, that one may be boastful and arrogant. The sixth is the spirit of lying, in perdition and jealousy to practise deceits, and concealments from kindred and friends.

12O sétimo é o espírito da injustiça, com o qual ocorrem furtos e atos de rapina, para que o homem cumpra o desejo de seu coração; pois a injustiça opera juntamente com os outros espíritos através do recebimento de presentes.

12The seventh is the spirit of injustice, with which are thefts and acts of rapacity, that a man may fulfill the desire of his heart; for injustice worketh together with the other spirits by the taking of gifts.

13E a todos estes o espírito do sono se une, que é (o) do erro e da fantasia. E assim perece todo jovem, obscurecendo sua mente da verdade, e não compreendendo a lei de Deus, nem obedecendo às advertências de seus pais, como aconteceu também a mim em minha mocidade. E agora, meus filhos, amai a verdade, e ela vos guardará: ouvi as palavras de Rúben, vosso pai.

13And with all these the spirit of sleep is joined which is (that) of error and fantasy. And so perisheth every young man, darkening his mind from the truth, and not understanding the law of God, nor obeying the admonitions of his fathers as befell me also in my youth. And now, my children, love the truth, and it will preserve you: hear ye the words of Reuben your father.

14Não deis atenção ao rosto de mulher, nem vos associeis com a mulher de outro homem, nem vos intrometais nos assuntos das mulheres.

14Pay no heed to the face of a woman, Nor associate with another man's wife, Nor meddle with affairs of womankind.

15Pois se eu não tivesse visto Bila se banhando em lugar coberto, não teria caído nesta grande iniquidade.

15For had I not seen Bilhah bathing in a covered place, I had not fallen into this great iniquity.

16Pois minha mente, acolhendo o pensamento da nudez da mulher, não me permitiu dormir até que eu tivesse consumado a coisa abominável. Pois enquanto Jacó, nosso pai, havia ido a Isaque, seu pai, quando estávamos em Éder, perto de Efrata em Belém, Bila se embriagou e dormia descoberta em sua câmara.

16For my mind taking in the thought of the woman's nakedness, suffered me not to sleep until I had wrought the abominable thing. For while Jacob our father had gone to Isaac his father, when we were in Eder, near to Ephrath in Bethlehem, Bilhah became drunk and was asleep uncovered in her chamber.

17Tendo, pois, entrado e contemplado a sua nudez, pratiquei a impiedade sem que ela o percebesse, e, deixando-a dormindo, parti. E imediatamente um anjo de Deus revelou a meu pai acerca de minha impiedade, e ele veio e pranteou sobre mim, e não a tocou mais.

17Having therefore gone in and beheld nakedness, I wrought the impiety without her perceiving it, and leaving her sleeping I departed. And forthwith an angel of God revealed to my father concerning my impiety, and he came and mourned over me, and touched her no more.

18Não deis atenção, portanto, meus filhos, à formosura das mulheres, nem ocupeis vossa mente com seus afazeres; mas andai em singeleza de coração no temor do Senhor, e empregai trabalho nas boas obras, e no estudo e nos vossos rebanhos, até que o Senhor vos dê uma esposa, a quem Ele quiser, para que não sofrais como eu sofri.

18Pay no heed, therefore, my children, to the beauty of women, nor set your mind on their affairs; but walk in singleness of heart in the fear of the Lord, and expend labour on good works, and on study and on your flocks, until the Lord give you a wife, whom He will, that ye suffer not as I did.

19Pois até a morte de meu pai não tive ousadia de olhar em seu rosto, ou de falar a qualquer de meus irmãos, por causa da vergonha. Até agora minha consciência me causa angústia por causa de minha impiedade. E contudo meu pai me consolou muito e orou por mim ao Senhor, para que a ira do Senhor se desviasse de mim, assim como o Senhor mostrou.

19For until my father's death I had not boldness to look in his face, or to speak to any of my brethren, because of the reproach. Even until now my conscience causeth me anguish on account of my impiety. And yet my father comforted me much and prayed for me unto the Lord, that the anger of the Lord might pass from me, even as the Lord showed.

20E desde então até agora tenho estado em guarda e não pequei. Portanto, meus filhos, digo-vos: observai todas as coisas que vos ordeno, e não pecareis. Pois uma cova para a alma é o pecado da fornicação, separando-a de Deus e aproximando-a dos ídolos, porque engana a mente e o entendimento, e conduz os jovens ao hades antes do seu tempo.

20And thenceforth until now I have been on my guard and sinned not. Therefore, my children, I say unto you, observe all things whatsoever I command you, and ye shall not sin. For a pit unto the soul is the sin of fornication, separating it from God, and bringing it near to idols, because it deceiveth the mind and understanding, and leadeth young men into hades before their time.

21Pois a muitos a fornicação tem destruído; porque, quer um homem seja velho ou nobre, ou rico ou pobre, traz opróbrio sobre si mesmo diante dos filhos dos homens e escárnio perante Beliar. Pois ouvistes a respeito de José, como se guardou de uma mulher, e purificou seus pensamentos de toda fornicação, e achou graça aos olhos de Deus e dos homens.

21For many hath fornication destroyed; because, though a man be old or noble, or rich or poor, he bringeth reproach upon himself with the sons of men and derision with Beliar. For ye heard regarding Joseph how he guarded himself from a woman, and purged his thoughts from all fornication, and found favour in the sight of God and men.

22Pois a mulher egípcia fez muitas coisas contra ele, e convocou magos, e ofereceu-lhe poções de amor, mas o propósito de sua alma não admitiu desejo mau. Portanto, o Deus de vossos pais o livrou de toda morte maligna (e) oculta. Pois se a fornicação não vencer vossa mente, tampouco Beliar poderá vencer-vos.

22For the Egyptian woman did many things unto him, and summoned magicians, and offered him love potions, but the purpose of his soul admitted no evil desire. Therefore the God of your fathers delivered him from every evil (and) hidden death. For if fornication overcomes not your mind, neither can Beliar overcome you.

23Pois más são as mulheres, meus filhos; e visto que não têm poder ou força sobre o homem, usam de ardis por atrações exteriores, para que possam atraí-lo a si mesmas. E àquele a quem não podem seduzir por atrativos exteriores, a este vencem pela astúcia. Pois além disso, acerca delas, o anjo do Senhor me disse e me ensinou que as mulheres são vencidas pelo espírito de fornicação mais do que os homens, e em seu coração tramam contra os homens; e por meio de seus adornos enganam primeiro suas mentes, e pelo olhar do olho instilam o veneno, e então através do ato consumado os levam cativos.

23For evil are women, my children; and since they have no power or strength over man, they use wiles by outward attractions, that they may draw him to themselves. And whom they cannot bewitch by outward attractions, him they overcome by craft. For moreover, concerning them, the angel of the Lord told me, and taught me, that women are overcome by the spirit of fornication more than men, and in their heart they plot against men; and by means of their adornment they deceive first their minds, and by the glance of the eye instill the poison, and then through the accomplished act they take them captive.

24Pois uma mulher não pode forçar um homem abertamente, mas pelo porte de meretriz o seduz. Fugi, portanto, da fornicação, meus filhos, e ordenai a vossas mulheres e a vossas filhas que não adornem suas cabeças e rostos para enganar a mente: porque toda mulher que usa desses artifícios foi reservada para o castigo eterno.

24For a woman cannot force a man openly, but by a harlot's bearing she beguiles him. Flee, therefore, fornication, my children, and command your wives and your daughters, that they adorn not their heads and faces to deceive the mind: because every woman who useth these wiles hath been reserved for eternal punishment.

25Pois assim elas seduziram os Vigilantes que existiam antes do dilúvio; pois como estes as contemplavam continuamente, cobiçaram-nas, e conceberam o ato em sua mente; pois transformaram-se em forma de homens, e apareceram a elas quando estavam com seus maridos.

25For thus they allured the Watchers who were before the flood; for as these continually beheld them, they lusted after them, and they conceived the act in their mind; for they changed themselves into the shape of men, and appeared to them when they were with their husbands.

26E as mulheres, cobiçando em suas mentes as formas deles, deram à luz gigantes, pois os Vigilantes lhes apareciam como alcançando até o céu.

26And the women lusting in their minds after their forms, gave birth to giants, for the Watchers appeared to them as reaching even unto heaven.

27Guardai-vos, portanto, da fornicação; e se desejais ser puros de mente, guardai vossos sentidos de toda mulher. E ordenai às mulheres igualmente que não se associem com homens, para que também sejam puras de mente. Pois os encontros constantes, ainda que a ação ímpia não seja consumada, são para elas uma doença irremediável, e para nós uma destruição de Beliar e um opróbrio eterno.

27Beware, therefore, of fornication; and if you wish to be pure in mind, guard your senses from every woman. And command the women likewise not to associate with men, that they also may be pure in mind. For constant meetings, even though the ungodly deed be not wrought, are to them an irremediable disease, and to us a destruction of Beliar and an eternal reproach.

28Pois na fornicação não há entendimento nem piedade, e todo ciúme habita na concupiscência da mesma. Portanto, digo-vos, tereis ciúmes contra os filhos de Levi, e buscareis ser exaltados sobre eles; mas não podereis. Pois Deus os vingará, e morrereis de má morte.

28For in fornication there is neither understanding nor godliness, and all jealousy dwelleth in the lust thereof. Therefore, then I say unto you, ye will be jealous against the sons of Levi, and will seek to be exalted over them; but ye shall not be able. For God will avenge them, and ye shall die by an evil death.

29Pois a Levi Deus deu a soberania e a Judá juntamente com ele e a mim também, e a Dã e a José, para que fôssemos príncipes. Portanto, ordeno-vos que deis ouvidos a Levi, porque ele conhecerá a lei do Senhor, e dará ordenanças para julgamento e sacrificará por todo o Israel até a consumação dos tempos, como o ungido Sumo Sacerdote, de quem o Senhor falou, Conjuro-vos pelo Deus do céu a praticar a verdade cada um para com seu próximo e a guardar o amor cada um por seu irmão.

29For to Levi God gave the sovereignty and to Judah with him and to me also, and to Dan and Joseph, that we should be for rulers. Therefore I command you to hearken to Levi, because he shall know the law of the Lord, and shall give ordinances for judgement and shall sacrifice for all Israel until the consummation of the times, as the anointed High Priest, of whom the Lord spake, I adjure you by the God of heaven to do truth each one unto his neighbour and to entertain love each one for his brother.

30E aproximai-vos de Levi em humildade de coração, para que possais receber a bênção de sua boca. Pois ele abençoará a Israel e a Judá, porque a ele escolheu o Senhor para ser rei sobre toda a nação. E inclinai-vos diante de sua semente, pois por nossa causa morrerá em guerras visíveis e invisíveis, e será entre vós um rei eterno.

30And draw ye near to Levi in humbleness of heart, that ye may receive a blessing from his mouth. For he shall bless Israel and Judah, because him hath the Lord chosen to be king over all the nation. And bow down before his seed, for on our behalf it will die in wars visible and invisible, and will be among you an eternal king.

31E Rúben morreu, tendo dado estas ordens a seus filhos. E colocaram-no em um ataúde até que o levaram do Egito, e o sepultaram em Hebrom, na caverna onde estava seu pai.

31And Reuben died, having given these commands to his sons. And they placed him in a coffin until they carried him up from Egypt, and buried him in Hebron in the cave where his father was.
