Testamento dos 12 Patriarcas 4

1O traslado das palavras de Judá, as coisas que ele falou a seus filhos antes de morrer. Eles se reuniram, portanto, e vieram a ele, e ele lhes disse: Ouvi, meus filhos, a Judá, vosso pai. Eu fui o quarto filho nascido de meu pai Jacó; e Lia, minha mãe, chamou-me Judá, dizendo: Dou graças ao Senhor, porque Ele me deu também um quarto filho.

1The copy of the words of Judah, what things he spake to his sons before he died. They gathered themselves together, therefore, and came to him, and he said to them: Hearken, my children, to Judah your father. I was the fourth son born to my father Jacob; and Leah my mother named me Judah, saying, I give thanks to the Lord, because He hath given me a fourth son also.

2Eu fui veloz na minha mocidade, e obediente a meu pai em tudo. E honrei a minha mãe e a irmã de minha mãe. E aconteceu que, quando me tornei homem, meu pai me abençoou, dizendo: Tu serás rei, prosperando em todas as coisas.

2I was swift in my youth, and obedient to my father in everything. And I honoured my mother and my mother's sister. And it came to pass, when I became a man, that my father blessed me, saying, Thou shalt be a king, prospering in all things.

3E o Senhor me mostrou favor em todas as minhas obras, tanto no campo como na casa. Sei que corri atrás de uma corça, e a alcancei, e preparei a carne para meu pai, e ele comeu. E os corços eu costumava dominar na caça, e alcançar tudo o que havia nas planícies.

3And the Lord showed me favour in all my works both in the field and in the house. I know that I raced a hind, and caught it, and prepared the meat for my father, and he did eat. And the roes I used to master in the chase, and overtake all that was in the plains.

4Uma égua selvagem alcancei, e a peguei e a amansei. Matei um leão e arranquei um cabrito de sua boca. Tomei um urso pela pata e o lancei pelo precipício abaixo, e ele foi esmagado. Corri mais que o javali selvagem e, agarrando-o enquanto corria, despedacei-o.

4A wild mare I overtook, and caught it and tamed it. I slew a lion and plucked a kid out of its mouth. I took a bear by its paw and hurled it down the cliff, and it was crushed. I outran the wild boar, and seizing it as I ran, I tore it in sunder.

5Um leopardo em Hebrom saltou sobre o meu cão, e eu o agarrei pela cauda, e o arremessei contra as rochas, e ele se partiu em dois. Achei um touro selvagem pastando nos campos e, agarrando-o pelos chifres, girando-o e atordoando-o, lancei-o longe de mim e o matei.

5A leopard in Hebron leaped upon my dog, and I caught it by the tail, and hurled it on the rocks, and it was broken in twain. I found a wild ox feeding in the fields, and seizing it by the horns, and whirling it round and stunning it, I cast it from me and slew it.

6E quando os dois reis dos cananeus vieram cobertos de armadura contra os nossos rebanhos, e muita gente com eles, sozinho investi contra o rei de Hazor, e feri-o nas caneleiras e o derrubei, e assim o matei. E ao outro, o rei de Tapua, enquanto estava montado em seu cavalo, matei, e assim dispersei todo o seu povo.

6And when the two kings of the Canaanites came sheathed in armour against our flocks, and much people with them, single-handed I rushed upon the king of Hazor, and smote him on the greaves and dragged him down, and so I Slew him. And the other, the king of Tappuah, as he sat upon his horse, I slew, and so I scattered all his people.

7Acor, o rei, homem de estatura gigantesca, encontrei-o arremessando dardos para a frente e para trás montado a cavalo; e tomei uma pedra de sessenta libras de peso, e a lancei e feri o seu cavalo, e o matei. E lutei com (este) outro por duas horas; e fendi o seu escudo em dois, e cortei-lhe os pés, e o matei.

7Achor the king a man of giant stature I found, hurling javelins before and behind as he sat on horseback, and I took up a stone of sixty pounds weight, and hurled it and smote his horse, and killed it. And I fought with (this) other for two hours; and I clave his shield in twain, and I chopped off his feet, and killed him.

8E enquanto eu lhe despojava a couraça, eis que nove homens, seus companheiros, começaram a lutar comigo. E enrolei a minha capa na mão, e atirei-lhes pedras, e matei quatro deles, e os demais fugiram.

8And as I was stripping off his breastplate, behold nine men his companions began to fight with me. And I wound my garment on my hand; and I slung stones at them, and killed four of them, and the rest fled.

9E Jacó, meu pai, matou Beelesate, rei de todos os reis, um gigante em força, de doze côvados de altura.

9And Jacob my father slew Beelesath, king of all the kings, a giant in strength, twelve cubits high.

10E o temor caiu sobre eles, e cessaram de guerrear contra nós. Por isso meu pai estava livre de ansiedade nas guerras quando eu estava com meus irmãos. Pois ele viu em visão a meu respeito que um anjo de poder me seguia por toda parte, para que eu não fosse vencido.

10And fear fell upon them, and they ceased warring against us. Therefore my father was free from anxiety in the wars when I was with my brethren. For he saw in a vision concerning me that an angel of might followed me everywhere, that I should not be overcome.

11E no sul sobreveio-nos uma guerra maior do que aquela em Siquém; e pus-me em ordem de batalha com meus irmãos, e persegui mil homens, e matei deles duzentos homens e quatro reis. E subi sobre o muro, e matei quatro homens valentes. E assim conquistamos Hazor, e tomamos todo o despojo.

11And in the south there came upon us a greater war than that in Shechem; and I joined in battle array with my brethren, and pursued a thousand men, and slew of them two hundred men and four kings. And I went up upon the wall, and I slew four mighty men. And so we captured Hazor, and took all the spoil.

12No dia seguinte partimos para Aretã, cidade forte, murada e inacessível, que nos ameaçava de morte. Mas eu e Gade nos aproximamos pelo lado oriental da cidade, e Rúben e Levi pelo ocidental. E os que estavam sobre o muro, pensando que estávamos sós, foram atraídos para baixo contra nós.

12On the next day we departed to Aretan, a city strong and walled and inaccessible, threatening us with death. But I and Gad approached on the east side of the city, and Reuben and Levi on the west. And they that were upon the wall, thinking that we were alone, were drawn down against us.

13E assim meus irmãos secretamente escalaram o muro de ambos os lados por meio de estacas, e entraram na cidade, sem que os homens o soubessem. E tomamo-la ao fio da espada. E quanto àqueles que se haviam refugiado na torre, pusemos fogo à torre e tomamos tanto a ela como a eles.

13And so my brothers secretly climbed up the wall on both sides by stakes, and entered the city, while the men knew it not. And we took it with the edge of the sword. And as for those who had taken refuge in the tower, we set fire to the tower and took both it and them.

14E enquanto partíamos, os homens de Tapua investiram contra o nosso despojo; e entregando-o aos nossos filhos, pelejamos com eles até Tapua.

14And as we were departing the men of Tappuah set upon our spoil, and delivering it up to our sons we fought with them as far as Tappuah.

15E matamo-los e queimamos a sua cidade, e tomamos como despojo tudo o que nela havia.

15And we slew them and burnt their city, and took as spoil all that was in it.

16E quando eu estava junto às águas de Cozeba, os homens de Jobel vieram contra nós para a batalha. E pelejamos com eles e os derrotamos; e matamos os seus aliados de Siló, e não lhes deixamos poder para investirem contra nós. E os homens de Maquir vieram sobre nós no quinto dia, para arrebatar o nosso despojo; e atacamo-los e vencemo-los em feroz batalha, pois havia uma multidão de homens valentes entre eles, e matamo-los antes que subissem a encosta. E quando chegamos à sua cidade, as suas mulheres rolaram sobre nós pedras do cume da colina sobre a qual a cidade estava edificada. E eu e Simeão nos escondemos atrás da povoação, e apoderamo-nos das alturas, e destruímos também esta cidade.

16And when I was at the waters of Kozeba, the men of Jobel came against us to battle. And we fought with them and routed them; and their allies from Shiloh we slew, and we did not leave them power to come in against us. And the men of Makir came upon us the fifth day, to seize our spoil; and we attacked them and overcame them in fierce battle: for there was a host of mighty men amongst them, and we slew them before they had gone up the ascent. And when we came to their city their women rolled upon us stones from the brow of the hill on which the city stood, And I and Simeon hid ourselves behind the town, and seized upon the heights, and destroyed this city also.

17E no dia seguinte foi-nos dito que o rei da cidade de Gaas, com um poderoso exército, vinha contra nós. Eu, pois, e Dã fingimo-nos amorreus, e como aliados entramos na sua cidade. E na profundeza da noite nossos irmãos vieram e nós lhes abrimos as portas; e destruímos todos os homens e os seus bens, e tomamos por presa tudo o que era deles, e os seus três muros derrubamos.

17And the next day it was told us that the king of the city of Gaash with a mighty host was coming against us. I, therefore, and Dan feigned ourselves to be Amorites, and as allies went into their city. And in the depth of night our brethren came and we opened to them the gates; and we destroyed all the men and their substance, and we took for a prey all that was theirs, and their three walls we cast down.

18E aproximamo-nos de Tamna, onde estavam todos os bens dos reis inimigos. Então, sendo insultado por eles, indignei-me e corri contra eles até o cume; e eles continuavam a atirar contra mim pedras e dardos. E se Dã, meu irmão, não me tivesse ajudado, eles ter-me-iam morto.

18And we drew near to Thamna, where was all the substance of the hostile kings. Then being insulted by them, I was therefore wroth, and rushed against them to the summit; and they kept slinging against me stones and darts. And had not Dan my brother aided me, they would have slain me.

19Caímos sobre eles, portanto, com furor, e todos fugiram; e passando por outro caminho, suplicaram a meu pai, e ele fez paz com eles. E não lhes fizemos dano algum, e tornaram-se nossos tributários, e restituímos-lhes o seu despojo.

19We came upon them, therefore, with wrath, and they all fled; and passing by another way, they besought my father, and he made peace with them. And we did to them no hurt, and they became tributary to us, and we restored to them their spoil.

20E eu edifiquei Tamna, e meu pai edificou Pabael. Eu tinha vinte anos de idade quando sobreveio esta guerra. E os cananeus temiam a mim e a meus irmãos.

20And I built Thamna, and my father built Pabael. I was twenty years old when this war befell. And the Canaanites feared me and my brethren.

21E eu tinha muito gado, e tinha por maioral dos pastores a Iram, o adulamita. E quando fui a ele, vi a Parsaba, rei de Adulão; e ele falou conosco e nos deu um banquete;

21And I had much cattle, and I had for chief herdsman Iram the Adullamite. And when I went to him I saw Parsaba, king of Adullam; and he spake unto us, and he made us a feast;

22e quando eu estava aquecido, deu-me sua filha Bate-Sua por mulher. Ela me deu à luz Er, e Onã, e Selá; e a dois deles o Senhor feriu, pois Selá sobreviveu, e vós sois os seus filhos.

22and when I was heated he gave me his daughter Bathshua to wife. She bare me Er, and Onan and Shelah; and two of them the Lord smote: for Shelah lived, and his children are ye.

23E dezoito anos habitou meu pai em paz com seu irmão Esaú, e os filhos deste conosco, depois que viemos da Mesopotâmia, de Labão. E cumpridos os dezoito anos, no quadragésimo ano da minha vida, Esaú, irmão de meu pai, veio sobre nós com um poderoso e forte povo.

23And eighteen years my father abode in peace with his brother Esau, and his sons with us, after that we came from Mesopotamia, from Laban. And when eighteen years were fulfilled, in the fortieth year of my life, Esau, the brother of my father, came upon us with a mighty and strong people.

24E Jacó feriu a Esaú com uma flecha, e ele foi levado ferido ao monte Seir, e, indo a caminho, morreu em Anoniram. E perseguimos os filhos de Esaú. Ora, tinham eles uma cidade com muros de ferro e portas de bronze; e não podíamos entrar nela, e acampamos ao redor e a sitiamos.

24And Jacob smote Esau with an arrow, and he was taken up wounded on Mount Seir, and as he went he died at Anoniram. And we pursued after the sons of Esau. Now they had a city with walls of iron and gates of brass; and we could not enter into it, and we encamped around, and besieged it.

25E quando não nos abriram em vinte dias, pus uma escada à vista de todos e, com o meu escudo sobre a cabeça, subi, suportando o assalto de pedras de mais de três talentos de peso; e matei quatro dos seus valentes.

25And when they opened not to us in twenty days, I set up a ladder in the sight of all and with my shield upon my head I went up, sustaining the assault of stones, upwards of three talents weight; and I slew four of their mighty men.

26E Rúben e Gade mataram outros seis. Então nos pediram termos de paz; e havendo tomado conselho com nosso pai, os recebemos como tributários. E deram-nos quinhentos coros de trigo, quinhentos batos de azeite e quinhentas medidas de vinho, até a fome, quando descemos ao Egito.

26And Reuben and Gad slew six others. Then they asked from us terms of peace; and having taken counsel with our father, we received them as tributaries. And they gave us five hundred cors of wheat, five hundred baths of oil, five hundred measures of wine, until the famine, when we went down into Egypt.

27E depois destas coisas meu filho Er tomou por mulher a Tamar, da Mesopotâmia, filha de Arã.

27And after these things my son Er took to wife Tamar, from Mesopotamia, a daughter of Aram.

28Ora, Er era ímpio, e estava em necessidade quanto a Tamar, porque ela não era da terra de Canaã. E na terceira noite um anjo do Senhor o feriu. E ele não a havia conhecido, segundo a maligna astúcia de sua mãe, pois não desejava ter filhos dela.

28Now Er was wicked, and he was in need concerning Tamar, because she was not of the land of Canaan. And on the third night an angel of the Lord smote him. And he had not known her according to the evil craftiness of his mother, for he did not wish to have children by her.

29Nos dias da festa de núpcias dei-lhe Onã em casamento; e este também, em sua maldade, não a conheceu, embora tenha passado com ela um ano. E quando o ameacei, ele coabitou com ela, mas derramou o sêmen no chão, segundo a ordem de sua mãe, e também morreu por causa da sua maldade.

29In the days of the wedding-feast I gave Onan to her in marriage; and he also in wickedness knew her not, though he spent with her a year. And when I threatened him he went in unto her, but he spilled the seed on the ground, according to the command of his mother, and he also died through wickedness.

30E desejei dar-lhe também Selá, mas sua mãe não o permitiu; pois maquinava o mal contra Tamar, porquanto ela não era das filhas de Canaã, como ela própria era.

30And I wished to give Shelah also to her, but his mother did not permit it; for she wrought evil against Tamar, because she was not of the daughters of Canaan, as she also herself was.

31E eu sabia que a linhagem dos cananeus era maligna, mas o ímpeto da juventude cegou o meu entendimento. E quando a vi derramando vinho, pela embriaguez do vinho fui enganado, e a tomei, embora meu pai não me houvesse aconselhado (a isso). E enquanto eu estava ausente, ela foi e tomou para Selá uma mulher de Canaã. E quando soube o que ela fizera, amaldiçoei-a na angústia da minha alma. E ela também morreu por causa de sua maldade, juntamente com seus filhos.

31And I knew that the race of the Canaanites was wicked, but the impulse of youth blinded my mind. And when I saw her pouring out wine, owing to the intoxication of wine I was deceived, and took her although my father had not counselled (it). And while I was away she went and took for Shelah a wife from Canaan. And when I knew what she had done, I cursed her in the anguish of my soul. And she also died through her wickedness together with her sons.

32E depois destas coisas, estando Tamar viúva, ouviu após dois anos que eu subia para tosquiar as minhas ovelhas; e adornou-se com trajes nupciais, e assentou-se na cidade de Enaim junto à porta. Pois era costume dos amorreus que aquela que estava para se casar se assentasse em prostituição por sete dias junto à porta.

32And after these things, while Tamar was a widow, she heard after two years that I was going up to shear my sheep, and adorned herself in bridal array, and sat in the city Enaim by the gate. For it was a law of the Amorites, that she who was about to marry should sit in fornication seven days by the gate.

33Portanto, estando embriagado com vinho, não a reconheci; e a sua formosura me enganou, pelo modo do seu adorno. E desviei-me para ela e disse: Deixa-me entrar a ti. E ela disse: Que me darás? E dei-lhe o meu cajado, o meu cinto e o diadema do meu reino como penhor.

33Therefore being drunk with wine, I did not recognize her; and her beauty deceived me, through the fashion of her adorning. And I turned aside to her, and said: Let me go in unto thee. And she said: What wilt thou give me? And I gave her my staff, and my girdle, and the diadem of my kingdom in pledge.

34E entrei a ela, e ela concebeu. E não sabendo o que havia feito, quis matá-la; mas ela enviou secretamente os meus penhores e envergonhou-me. E quando a chamei, ouvi também as palavras secretas que proferi ao deitar-me com ela na minha embriaguez;

34And I went in unto her, and she conceived. And not knowing what I had done, I wished to slay her; but she privily sent my pledges, and put me to shame. And when I called her, I heard also the secret words which I spoke when lying with her in my drunkenness;

35e não a pude matar, porque isso vinha do Senhor. Pois eu disse: Não suceda que ela o tenha feito com astúcia, havendo recebido o penhor de outra mulher. Porém não me cheguei mais a ela enquanto vivi, porque havia feito esta abominação em todo o Israel.

35and I could not slay her, because it was from the Lord. For I said, Lest haply she did it in subtlety, having received the pledge from another woman. But I came not again near her while I lived, because I had done this abomination in all Israel.

36Ademais, os que estavam na cidade disseram que não havia prostituta na porta, porque ela viera de outro lugar e se assentara por um pouco junto à porta. E pensei que ninguém sabia que eu havia entrado a ela. E depois disto fomos para o Egito ter com José, por causa da fome. E eu tinha quarenta e seis anos de idade, e setenta e três anos vivi no Egito.

36Moreover, they who were in the city said there was no harlot in the gate, because she came from another place, and sat for a while in the gate. And I thought that no one knew that I had gone in to her. And after this we came into Egypt to Joseph, because of the famine. And I was forty and six years old, and seventy and three years lived I in Egypt.

37E agora vos ordeno, meus filhos, ouvi a Judá, vosso pai, e guardai os meus ditos para cumprirdes todas as ordenanças do Senhor e obedecerdes aos mandamentos de Deus. E não andeis segundo as vossas concupiscências, nem nas imaginações dos vossos pensamentos com soberba de coração; e não vos glorieis nos feitos e na força da vossa mocidade, pois isto também é mau aos olhos do Senhor.

37And now I command you, my children, hearken to Judah your father, and keep my sayings to perform all the ordinances of the Lord, and to obey the commands of God. And walk not after your lusts, nor in the imaginations of your thoughts in haughtiness of heart; and glory not in the deeds and strength of your youth, for this also is evil in the eyes of the Lord.

38Porquanto eu também me gloriei de que nas guerras a face de nenhuma mulher formosa jamais me seduzira, e repreendi a Rúben, meu irmão, acerca de Bila, mulher de meu pai; os espíritos do ciúme e da fornicação puseram-se em ordem de batalha contra mim, até que me deitei com Bate-Sua, a cananeia, e com Tamar, que estava desposada com meus filhos.

38Since I also gloried that in wars no comely woman's face ever enticed me, and reproved Reuben my brother concerning Bilhah, the wife of my father, the spirits of jealousy and of fornication arrayed themselves against me, until I lay with Bathshua the Canaanite, and Tamar, who was espoused to my sons.

39Pois eu dissera a meu sogro: Tomarei conselho com meu pai, e assim tomarei a tua filha. E ele não queria, mas mostrou-me uma reserva infinda de ouro em favor de sua filha, pois era rei. E adornou-a de ouro e de pérolas, e fez com que ela nos servisse vinho no banquete com a formosura das mulheres.

39For I said to my father-in-law: I will take counsel with my father, and so will I take thy daughter. And he was unwilling, but he showed me a boundless store of gold in his daughter's behalf; for he was a king. And he adorned her with gold and pearls, and caused her to pour out wine for us at the feast with the beauty of women.

40E o vinho desviou os meus olhos, e o prazer cegou o meu coração. E enamorei-me dela e me deitei com ela, e transgredi o mandamento do Senhor e o mandamento de meus pais, e tomei-a por mulher. E o Senhor me retribuiu segundo a imaginação do meu coração, porquanto não tive alegria em seus filhos.

40And the wine turned aside my eyes, and pleasure blinded my heart. And I became enamoured of and I lay with her, and transgressed the commandment of the Lord and the commandment of my fathers, and I took her to wife. And the Lord rewarded me according to the imagination of my heart, inasmuch as I had no joy in her children.

41E agora, meus filhos, digo-vos: não vos embriagueis com vinho; pois o vinho desvia a mente da verdade, e inspira a paixão da concupiscência, e conduz os olhos ao erro. Pois o espírito de fornicação tem o vinho como ministro para dar prazer à mente; pois estes dois também tiram o entendimento do homem.

41And now, my children, I say unto you, be not drunk with wine; for wine turneth the mind away from the truth, and inspires the passion of lust, and leadeth the eyes into error. For the spirit of fornication hath wine as a minister to give pleasure to the mind; for these two also take away the mind of man.

42Pois se um homem bebe vinho até a embriaguez, este perturba a mente com pensamentos imundos que conduzem à fornicação, e inflama o corpo para a união carnal; e se a ocasião da concupiscência estiver presente, ele comete o pecado e não se envergonha. Tal é o homem embriagado, meus filhos; pois aquele que está ébrio a ninguém reverencia.

42For if a man drink wine to drunkenness, it disturbeth the mind with filthy thoughts leading to fornication, and heateth the body to carnal union; and if the occasion of the lust be present, he worketh the sin, and is not ashamed. Such is the inebriated man, my children; for he who is drunken reverenceth no man.

43Pois, eis que a mim também me fez errar, de sorte que não me envergonhei da multidão na cidade, visto que diante dos olhos de todos me desviei para Tamar, e cometi um grande pecado, e descobri a vergonha de meus filhos.

43For, lo, it made me also to err, so that I was not ashamed of the multitude in the city, in that before the eyes of all I turned aside unto Tamar, and I wrought a great sin, and I uncovered the covering of my sons' shame.

44Depois de haver bebido vinho, reverenciei não o mandamento de Deus, e tomei uma mulher de Canaã por esposa. Pois de muita prudência necessita o homem que bebe vinho, meus filhos; e nisto consiste a discrição no beber vinho: o homem pode beber enquanto preservar a modéstia.

44After I had drunk wine I reverenced not the commandment of God, and I took a woman of Canaan to wife. For much discretion needeth the man who drinketh wine, my children; and herein is discretion in drinking wine a man may drink so long as he preserveth modesty.

45Mas se ultrapassar este limite, o espírito do engano ataca a sua mente, e faz o ébrio falar torpezas, e transgredir, e não se envergonhar, mas até gloriar-se na sua vergonha e considerar-se honrado.

45But if he go beyond this limit the spirit of deceit attacketh his mind, and it maketh the drunkard to talk filthily, and to transgress and not to be ashamed, but even to glory in his shame, and to account himself honourable.

46Aquele que comete fornicação não percebe quando sofre perda, e não se envergonha quando exposto à desonra. Pois ainda que um homem seja rei e cometa fornicação, ele é despojado da sua realeza, tornando-se escravo da fornicação, como eu próprio também sofri.

46He that committeth fornication is not aware when he suffers loss, and is not ashamed when put to dishonour. For even though a man be a king and commit fornication, he is stripped of his kingship by becoming the slave of fornication, as I myself also suffered.

47Pois entreguei o meu cajado, isto é, o sustentáculo da minha tribo; e o meu cinto, isto é, o meu poder; e o meu diadema, isto é, a glória do meu reino. E na verdade me arrependi destas coisas; vinho e carne não comi até a minha velhice, nem contemplei alegria alguma.

47For I gave my staff, that is, the stay of my tribe; and my girdle, that is, my power; and my diadem, that is, the glory of my kingdom. And indeed I repented of these things; wine and flesh I eat not until my old age, nor did I behold any joy.

48E o anjo de Deus mostrou-me que para sempre as mulheres dominam tanto sobre o rei como sobre o mendigo. E do rei tiram a sua glória, e do valente a sua força, e do mendigo até mesmo aquele pouco que é o esteio da sua pobreza.

48And the angel of God showed me that for ever do women bear rule over king and beggar alike. And from the king they take away his glory, and from the valiant man his might, and from the beggar even that little which is the stay of his poverty.

49Observai, portanto, meus filhos, o devido limite no vinho; pois há nele quatro espíritos malignos: de concupiscência, de ardente desejo, de devassidão e de torpe ganância. Se beberdes vinho com alegria, sede comedidos no temor de Deus. Pois se na (vossa) alegria o temor de Deus se apartar, então surge a embriaguez e a desfaçatez se introduz furtivamente.

49Observe, therefore, my children, the (rights limit in wine; for there are in it four evil spirits--- of lust, of hot desire, of profligacy of filthy lucre. If ye drink wine in gladness, be ye modest in the fear of God. For if in (your) gladness the fear of God departeth, then drunkenness ariseth and shamelessness stealeth in.

50Mas se quereis viver sobriamente, não toqueis absolutamente no vinho, para que não pequeis com palavras ultrajantes, e em contendas e calúnias, e em transgressões dos mandamentos de Deus, e pereçais antes do vosso tempo. Ademais, o vinho revela os mistérios de Deus e dos homens, assim como eu também revelei os mandamentos de Deus e os mistérios de Jacó, meu pai, à mulher cananeia Bate-Sua, os quais Deus me ordenara que não revelasse. E o vinho é causa tanto de guerra como de confusão.

50But if ye would live soberly do not touch wine at all, lest ye sin in words of outrage, and in fightings and slanders, and transgressions of the commandments of God, and ye perish before your time. Moreover, wine revealeth the mysteries of God and men, even as I also revealed the commandments of God and the mysteries of Jacob my father to the Canaanitish woman Bathshua, which God bade me not to reveal. And wine is a cause both of war and confusion.

51E agora, ordeno-vos, meus filhos, que não ameis o dinheiro, nem olheis fixamente para a formosura das mulheres; porque por causa do dinheiro e da formosura fui seduzido por Bate-Sua, a cananeia.

51And now, I command you, my children, not to love money, nor to gaze upon the beauty of women; because for the sake of money and beauty I was led astray to Bathshua the Canaanite.

52Pois sei que por causa destas duas coisas a minha linhagem cairá na impiedade. Pois até mesmo os sábios entre os meus filhos elas corromperão, e farão diminuir o reino de Judá, o qual o Senhor me deu por causa da minha obediência a meu pai.

52For I know that because of these two things shall my race fall into wickedness. For even wise men among my sons shall they mar, and shall cause the kingdom of Judah to be diminished, which the Lord gave me because of my obedience to my father.

53Pois nunca causei tristeza a Jacó, meu pai; porque todas as coisas, tudo quanto me ordenou, eu fiz. E Isaque, pai de meu pai, abençoou-me para que eu fosse rei em Israel, e Jacó outrossim me abençoou de maneira semelhante. E sei que de mim será estabelecido o reino.

53For I never caused grief to Jacob, my father: for all things whatsoever he commanded I did. And Isaac, the father of my father, blessed me to be king in Israel, and Jacob further blessed me in like manner. And I know that from me shall the kingdom be established.

54E sei que males haveis de praticar nos últimos dias.

54And I know what evils ye will do in the last days.

55Guardai-vos, portanto, meus filhos, da fornicação e do amor ao dinheiro, e ouvi a Judá, vosso pai.

55Beware, therefore, my children, of fornication, and the love of money, and hearken to Judah your father.

56Pois estas coisas vos apartam da lei de Deus, e cegam a inclinação da alma, e ensinam a arrogância, e não permitem que o homem tenha compaixão do seu próximo. Elas roubam da sua alma toda a bondade, e o oprimem com fadigas e aflições, e afugentam dele o sono, e devoram a sua carne.

56For these things withdraw you from the law of God, And blind the inclination of the soul, And teach arrogance, And suffer not a man to have compassion upon his neighbour They rob his soul of all goodness, And oppress him with toils and troubles, And drive away sleep from him, And devour his flesh.

57E ele estorva os sacrifícios de Deus; e não se lembra da bênção de Deus, não dá ouvidos a um profeta quando este fala, e ressente-se das palavras de piedade.

57And he hindereth the sacrifices of God; And he remembereth not the blessing of God, He hearkeneth not to a prophet when he speaketh, And resenteth the words of godliness.

58Pois é escravo de duas paixões contrárias, e não pode obedecer a Deus, porque elas cegaram a sua alma, e ele anda de dia como de noite.

58For he is a slave to two contrary passions, And cannot obey God, Because they have blinded his soul, And he walketh in the day as in the night.

59Meus filhos, o amor ao dinheiro conduz à idolatria; porque, extraviados pelo dinheiro, os homens chamam de deuses àqueles que não são deuses, e faz com que aquele que o possui caia na loucura. Por causa do dinheiro perdi meus filhos; e se não tivessem sido aceitos o meu arrependimento, e a minha humilhação, e as orações de meu pai, eu teria morrido sem filhos. Mas o Deus de meus pais teve misericórdia de mim, porque o fiz por ignorância. E o príncipe do engano me cegou, e pequei como homem e como carne, sendo corrompido pelos pecados; e aprendi a minha própria fraqueza enquanto me julgava invencível.

59My children, the love of money leadeth to idolatry; because, when led astray through money, men name as gods those who are not gods, and it causeth him who hath it to fall into madness For the sake of money I lost my children, and had not my repentance, and my humiliation, and the prayers of my father been accepted, I should have died childless. But the God of my fathers had mercy on me, because I did it in ignorance. And the prince of deceit blinded me, and I sinned as a man and as flesh, being corrupted through sins; and I learnt my own weakness while thinking myself invincible.

60Sabei, portanto, meus filhos, que dois espíritos assistem ao homem: o espírito da verdade e o espírito do erro. E no meio está o espírito de entendimento da mente, ao qual pertence inclinar-se para onde quiser.

60Know, therefore, my children, that two spirits wait upon man the spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit. And in the midst is the spirit of understanding of the mind, to which it belongeth to turn whithersoever it will.

61E as obras da verdade e as obras do engano estão escritas nos corações dos homens, e cada uma delas o Senhor conhece.

61And the works of truth and the works of deceit are written upon the hearts of men, and each one of them the Lord knoweth.

62E não há tempo em que as obras dos homens possam ser ocultadas; pois no próprio coração foram elas escritas diante do Senhor. E o espírito da verdade testifica de todas as coisas e acusa a todos; e o pecador é consumido pelo seu próprio coração, e não pode levantar o rosto diante do juiz.

62And there is no time at which the works of men can be hid; for on the heart itself have they been written down before the Lord. And the spirit of truth testifieth all things, and accuseth all; and the sinner is burnt up by his own heart, and cannot raise his face to the judge.

63E agora, meus filhos, ordeno-vos: amai a Levi, para que possais permanecer, e não vos exalteis contra ele, para que não sejais de todo destruídos. Pois a mim o Senhor deu o reino, e a ele o sacerdócio, e pôs o reino abaixo do sacerdócio.

63And now, my children, I command you, love Levi, that ye may abide, and exalt not yourselves against him, lest ye be utterly destroyed. For to me the Lord gave the kingdom, and to him the priesthood, and He set the kingdom beneath the priesthood.

64A mim deu as coisas sobre a terra; a ele as coisas nos céus. Como o céu é mais alto do que a terra, assim o sacerdócio de Deus é mais alto do que o reino terreno, a menos que decaia pelo pecado para longe do Senhor e seja dominado pelo reino terreno.

64To me He gave the things upon the earth; to him the things in the heavens. As the heaven is higher than the earth, so is the priesthood of God higher than the earthly kingdom, unless it falls away through sin from the Lord and is dominated by the earthly kingdom.

65Pois o anjo do Senhor me disse: O Senhor o escolheu antes de ti, para achegar-se a Ele, e para comer da Sua mesa e oferecer-Lhe as primícias das coisas seletas dos filhos de Israel; mas tu serás rei de Jacó.

65For the angel of the Lord said unto me: The Lord chose him rather than thee, to draw near to Him, and to eat of His table and to offer Him the first-fruits of the choice things of the sons of Israel; but thou shalt be king of Jacob.

66E tu serás entre eles como o mar. Pois assim como no mar os justos e os injustos são sacudidos, sendo uns levados ao cativeiro enquanto outros são enriquecidos, assim também toda a linhagem de homens será em ti: uns empobrecerão, sendo levados cativos, e outros enriquecerão despojando os bens alheios.

66And thou shalt be amongst them as the sea. For as, on the sea, just and unjust are tossed about, some taken into captivity while some are enriched, so also shall every race of men be in thee: some shall be impoverished, being taken captive, and others grow rich by plundering the possessions of others.

67Pois os reis serão como monstros marinhos. Engolirão os homens como peixes: os filhos e as filhas de homens livres escravizarão; casas, terras, rebanhos e dinheiro saquearão;

67For the kings shall be as sea-monsters. They shall swallow men like fishes: The sons and daughters of free men shall they enslave; Houses, lands, flocks, money shall they plunder:

68e com a carne de muitos alimentarão injustamente os corvos e as garças; e avançarão no mal, exaltados na cobiça, e haverá falsos profetas como tempestades, e perseguirão a todos os homens justos.

68And with the flesh of many shall they wrongfully feed the ravens and the cranes; And they shall advance in evil, in covetousness uplifted, And there shall be false prophets like tempests, And they shall persecute all righteous men.

69E o Senhor suscitará sobre eles divisões de uns contra os outros. E haverá guerras contínuas em Israel;

69And the Lord shall bring upon them divisions one against another. And there shall be continual wars in Israel;

70e entre homens de outra raça o meu reino chegará ao fim, até que venha a salvação de Israel, até a manifestação do Deus da justiça, para que Jacó e todos os gentios descansem em paz.

70And among men of another race shall my kingdom be brought to an end, Until the salvation of Israel shall come, Until the appearing of the God of righteousness, That Jacob and all the Gentiles may rest in peace.

71E Ele guardará o poder do meu reino para sempre; pois o Senhor me jurou com juramento que não destruiria o reino da minha descendência para sempre.

71And He shall guard the might of my kingdom for ever; For the Lord sware to me with an oath that He would not destroy the kingdom from my seed for ever.

72Ora, tenho grande tristeza, meus filhos, por causa das vossas devassidões, feitiçarias e idolatrias que haveis de praticar contra o reino, seguindo os que têm espíritos adivinhadores, prognosticadores e demônios do engano. Fareis de vossas filhas cantoras e prostitutas, e vos misturareis nas abominações dos gentios.

72Now I have much grief, my children, because of your lewdness and witchcrafts, and idolatries which ye shall practise against the kingdom, following them that have familiar spirits, diviners, and demons of error. Ye shall make your daughters singing girls and harlots, and ye shall mingle in the abominations of the Gentiles.

73Por causa de tais coisas o Senhor trará sobre vós fome e peste, morte e espada, cerco de inimigos e opróbrios de amigos, matança de filhos, estupro de esposas, saque de bens, queima do templo de Deus, desolação da terra e a vossa própria escravidão entre os gentios. E farão de alguns de vós eunucos para as suas mulheres.

73For which things' sake the Lord shall bring upon you famine and pestilence, death and the sword, beleaguering by enemies, and revilings of friends, the slaughter of children, the rape of wives, the plundering of possessions, the burning of the temple of God, the laying waste of the land, the enslavement of yourselves among the Gentiles. And they shall make some of you eunuchs for their wives.

74Até que o Senhor vos visite, quando com coração perfeito vos arrependerdes e andardes em todos os Seus mandamentos; e Ele vos fará subir do cativeiro dentre os gentios.

74Until the Lord visit you, when with perfect heart ye repent and walk in all His commandments; and He bring you up from captivity among the Gentiles.

75E depois destas coisas vos surgirá em paz uma estrela de Jacó, e levantar-se-á da minha descendência um homem, como o sol da justiça, andando com os filhos dos homens em mansidão e justiça; e nenhum pecado se achará nele.

75And after these things shall a star arise to you from Jacob in peace, And a man shall arise from my seed, like the sun of righteousness, walking with the sons of men in meekness and righteousness; And no sin shall be found in him.

76E os céus se abrirão para ele, para derramar o espírito, (a saber) a bênção do Santo Pai;

76and the heavens shall be open unto him, To pour out the spirit, (even) the blessing of the Holy Father;

77e Ele derramará o espírito da graça sobre vós; e vós sereis para Ele filhos em verdade, e andareis nos Seus mandamentos, primeiros e últimos.

77And He shall pour out the spirit of grace upon you; And ye shall be unto Him sons in truth, And ye shall walk in His commandments first and last.

78Este é o Renovo do Deus Altíssimo, e esta é a Fonte que dá vida a todos.

78This Branch of God Most High, And this Fountain giving life unto all.

79Então resplandecerá o cetro do meu reino; e da vossa raiz surgirá uma haste;

79Then shall the sceptre of my kingdom shine forth; And from your root shall arise a stem;

80e dela crescerá uma vara de justiça para os gentios, para julgar e salvar todos os que invocam o Senhor.

80And from it shall grow a rod of righteousness to the Gentiles, To judge and to save all that call upon the Lord.

81E depois destas coisas ressurgirão para a vida Abraão, Isaque e Jacó, e eu e meus irmãos seremos chefes das tribos de Israel: Levi primeiro, eu o segundo, José o terceiro, Benjamim o quarto, Simeão o quinto, Issacar o sexto, e assim todos em ordem. E o Senhor abençoou a Levi, e o Anjo da Presença, a mim; os poderes da glória, a Simeão; o céu, a Rúben; a terra, a Issacar; o mar, a Zebulom; as montanhas, a José; o tabernáculo, a Benjamim; os luminares, a Dã; o Éden, a Naftali; o sol, a Gade; a lua, a Aser.

81And after these things shall Abraham and Isaac and Jacob arise unto life, and I and my brethren shall be chiefs of the tribes of Israel: Levi first, I the second, Joseph third, Benjamin fourth, Simeon fifth; Issachar sixth, and so all in order. And the Lord blessed Levi, and the Angel of the Presence, me; the powers of glory, Simeon; the heaven, Reuben; the earth, Issachar; the sea, Zebulun; the mountains, Joseph; the tabernacle, Benjamin; the luminaries, Dan; Eden, Naphtali; the sun, Gad; the moon, Asher.

82E vós sereis o povo do Senhor, e tereis uma só língua; e não haverá ali espírito algum de engano de Beliar, pois ele será lançado no fogo para sempre.

82And ye shall be the people of the Lord, and have one tongue; And there shall be there no spirit of deceit of Beliar, For he shall be cast into the fire for ever.

83E os que morreram em tristeza ressurgirão em alegria, e os que foram pobres por amor do Senhor serão enriquecidos, e os que foram mortos por amor do Senhor despertarão para a vida.

83And they who have died in grief shall arise in joy, And they who were poor for the Lord's sake shall be made rich, And they who are put to death for the Lord's sake shall awake to life.

84E os cervos de Jacó correrão em regozijo, e as águias de Israel voarão em alegria; e todo o povo glorificará o Senhor para sempre.

84And the harts of Jacob shall run in joyfulness, And the eagles of Israel shall fly in gladness; And all the people shall glorify the Lord for ever.

85Observai, portanto, meus filhos, toda a lei do Senhor, pois há esperança para todos os que se apegam firmemente aos Seus caminhos. E disse-lhes: Eis que hoje morro diante dos vossos olhos, com cento e dezenove anos de idade. Ninguém me sepulte com trajes suntuosos, nem rasgue as minhas entranhas, pois isto é o que farão aqueles que são reis; e levai-me convosco para Hebrom.

85Observe, therefore, my children, all the law of the Lord, for there is hope for all them who hold fast unto His ways. And he said to them: Behold, I die before your eyes this day, a hundred and nineteen years old. Let no one bury me in costly apparel, nor tear open my bowels, for this shall they who are kings do; and carry me up to Hebron with you.

86E Judá, havendo dito estas coisas, adormeceu; e fizeram os seus filhos conforme tudo quanto ele lhes ordenara, e sepultaram-no em Hebrom, com seus pais.

86And Judah, when he had said these things, fell asleep; and his sons did according to all whatsoever he commanded them, and they buried him in Hebron, with his fathers.
