Eclesiástico 18

1Aquele que vive para sempre criou todas as coisas em conjunto.

1He that liveth for ever hath created all things in general.

2Só o Senhor é justo, e não há outro senão ele,

2The Lord only is righteous, and there is none other but he,

3que governa o mundo com a palma da sua mão, e todas as coisas obedecem à sua vontade; pois ele é o Rei de tudo, separando pelo seu poder entre elas as coisas santas das profanas.

3Who governeth the world with the palm of his hand, and all things obey his will: for he is the King of all, by his power dividing holy things among them from profane.

4A quem deu ele poder para anunciar as suas obras? E quem investigará os seus feitos nobres?

4To whom hath he given power to declare his works? and who shall find out his noble acts?

5Quem medirá a força da sua majestade? E quem contará também as suas misericórdias?

5Who shall number the strength of his majesty? and who shall also tell out his mercies?

6Quanto às obras maravilhosas do Senhor, nada se lhes pode tirar, nem coisa alguma se lhes pode acrescentar, nem se pode achar o seu fundo.

6As for the wondrous works of the Lord, there may nothing be taken from them, neither may any thing be put unto them, neither can the ground of them be found out.

7Quando o homem acaba, então começa; e, quando para, fica perplexo.

7When a man hath done, then he beginneth; and when he leaveth off, then he shall be doubtful.

8Que é o homem, e para que serve? Qual é o seu bem, e qual é o seu mal?

8What is man, and whereto serveth he? what is his good, and what is his evil?

9O número dos dias do homem, quando muito, é de cem anos.

9The number of a man’s days at the most are an hundred years.

10Como uma gota de água para o mar e uma pedrinha em comparação com a areia, assim são mil anos para os dias da eternidade.

10As a drop of water unto the sea, and a gravelstone in comparison of the sand; so are a thousand years to the days of eternity.

11Por isso Deus é paciente com eles e derrama sobre eles a sua misericórdia.

11Therefore is God patient with them, and poureth forth his mercy upon them.

12Viu e percebeu que o seu fim é mau; por isso multiplicou a sua compaixão.

12He saw and perceived their end to be evil; therefore he multiplied his compassion.

13A misericórdia do homem é para o seu próximo; mas a misericórdia do Senhor é sobre toda carne: ele repreende, e educa, e ensina, e reconduz, como o pastor o seu rebanho.

13The mercy of man is toward his neighbour; but the mercy of the Lord is upon all flesh: he reproveth, and nurtureth, and teacheth and bringeth again, as a shepherd his flock.

14Tem misericórdia dos que recebem a disciplina e dos que buscam com diligência os seus juízos.

14He hath mercy on them that receive discipline, and that diligently seek after his judgments.

15Meu filho, não manches as tuas boas obras, nem uses palavras desagradáveis quando deres alguma coisa.

15My son, blemish not thy good deeds, neither use uncomfortable words when thou givest any thing.

16Não abranda o orvalho o calor? Assim a palavra é melhor do que a dádiva.

16Shall not the dew asswage the heat? so is a word better than a gift.

17Eis que a palavra não é melhor do que a dádiva? Mas ambas estão no homem benigno.

17Lo, is not a word better than a gift? but both are with a gracious man.

18O insensato censura com grosseria, e a dádiva do invejoso consome os olhos.

18A fool will upbraid churlishly, and a gift of the envious consumeth the eyes.

19Aprende antes de falar, e cuida da saúde antes de adoecer.

19Learn before thou speak, and use physick or ever thou be sick.

20Antes do juízo examina-te a ti mesmo, e no dia da visitação acharás misericórdia.

20Before judgment examine thyself, and in the day of visitation thou shalt find mercy.

21Humilha-te antes de adoecer, e no tempo dos pecados mostra arrependimento.

21Humble thyself before thou be sick, and in the time of sins shew repentance.

22Nada te impeça de cumprir o teu voto no tempo devido, e não esperes até a morte para te justificares.

22Let nothing hinder thee to pay thy vow in due time, and defer not until death to be justified.

23Antes de orar, prepara-te, e não sejas como quem tenta o Senhor.

23Before thou prayest, prepare thyself; and be not as one that tempteth the Lord.

24Pensa na ira que haverá no fim, e no tempo da vingança, quando ele desviar o seu rosto.

24Think upon the wrath that shall be at the end, and the time of vengeance, when he shall turn away his face.

25Quando tiveres fartura, lembra-te do tempo da fome; e, quando fores rico, pensa na pobreza e na necessidade.

25When thou hast enough, remember the time of hunger: and when thou art rich, think upon poverty and need.

26Da manhã até a tarde o tempo muda, e todas as coisas se fazem depressa diante do Senhor.

26From the morning until the evening the time is changed, and all things are soon done before the Lord.

27O sábio temerá em todas as coisas, e no dia do pecado se guardará da ofensa; mas o insensato não observará o tempo.

27A wise man will fear in every thing, and in the day of sinning he will beware of offence: but a fool will not observe time.

28Todo homem de entendimento conhece a sabedoria e louvará quem a achou.

28Every man of understanding knoweth wisdom, and will give praise unto him that found her.

29Os que eram entendidos nas sentenças tornaram-se também eles sábios e derramaram parábolas excelentes.

29They that were of understanding in sayings became also wise themselves, and poured forth exquisite parables.

30Não sigas as tuas paixões, mas refreia-te dos teus apetites.

30Go not after thy lusts, but refrain thyself from thine appetites.

31Se deres à tua alma os desejos que lhe agradam, ela te fará objeto de riso para os teus inimigos que te caluniam.

31If thou givest thy soul the desires that please her, she will make thee a laughingstock to thine enemies that malign thee.

32Não te deleites em muitos banquetes, nem te prendas às suas despesas.

32Take not pleasure in much good cheer, neither be tied to the expence thereof.

33Não te tornes mendigo banqueteando com dinheiro emprestado, quando nada tens na tua bolsa; pois armarás ciladas à tua própria vida e serás falado.

33Be not made a beggar by banqueting upon borrowing, when thou hast nothing in thy purse: for thou shalt lie in wait for thine own life, and be talked on.
