Eclesiástico 23

1Ó Senhor, Pai e Governador de toda a minha vida, não me deixes entregue aos seus conselhos, e não me deixes cair por eles.

1O Lord, Father and Governor of all my whole life, leave me not to their counsels, and let me not fall by them.

2Quem porá açoites sobre os meus pensamentos e a disciplina da sabedoria sobre o meu coração, para que não me poupem pelas minhas ignorâncias, e não deixem passar os meus pecados?

2Who will set scourges over my thoughts, and the discipline of wisdom over mine heart? that they spare me not for mine ignorances, and it pass not by my sins:

3Para que não se multipliquem as minhas ignorâncias, nem abundem os meus pecados para a minha destruição, e eu não caia diante dos meus adversários, e o meu inimigo, cuja esperança está longe da tua misericórdia, não se alegre sobre mim.

3Lest mine ignorances increase, and my sins abound to my destruction, and I fall before mine adversaries, and mine enemy rejoice over me, whose hope is far from thy mercy.

4Ó Senhor, Pai e Deus da minha vida, não me dês olhar soberbo, mas afasta sempre dos teus servos o ânimo altivo.

4O Lord, Father and God of my life, give me not a proud look, but turn away from thy servants always a haughty mind.

5Afasta de mim as esperanças vãs e a concupiscência, e sustentarás aquele que sempre deseja servir-te.

5Turn away from me vain hopes and concupiscence, and thou shalt hold him up that is desirous always to serve thee.

6Não se apodere de mim a voracidade do ventre nem a luxúria da carne; e não entregues o teu servo a um ânimo sem pudor.

6Let not the greediness of the belly nor lust of the flesh take hold of me; and give not over me thy servant into an impudent mind.

7Ouvi, ó filhos, a disciplina da boca; quem a guarda nunca será apanhado pelos seus lábios.

7Hear, O ye children, the discipline of the mouth: he that keepeth it shall never be taken in his lips.

8O pecador será deixado na sua loucura; tanto o maldizente como o soberbo cairão por ela.

8The sinner shall be left in his foolishness: both the evil speaker and the proud shall fall thereby.

9Não acostumes a tua boca ao juramento, nem te habitues a nomear o Santo.

9Accustom not thy mouth to swearing; neither use thyself to the naming of the Holy One.

10Pois, como o servo que é continuamente espancado não ficará sem marca roxa, assim quem jura e nomeia a Deus continuamente não ficará sem culpa.

10For as a servant that is continually beaten shall not be without a blue mark: so he that sweareth and nameth God continually shall not be faultless.

11O homem que jura muito se encherá de iniquidade, e o flagelo nunca se apartará da sua casa; se ofender, o seu pecado estará sobre ele; e, se não reconhecer o seu pecado, comete dupla ofensa; e, se jurar em vão, não será inocente, mas a sua casa se encherá de calamidades.

11A man that useth much swearing shall be filled with iniquity, and the plague shall never depart from his house: if he shall offend, his sin shall be upon him: and if he acknowledge not his sin, he maketh a double offence: and if he swear in vain, he shall not be innocent, but his house shall be full of calamities.

12Há uma palavra que está revestida de morte; Deus permita que não se ache na herança de Jacó; pois todas essas coisas estarão longe dos piedosos, e eles não se revolverão nos seus pecados.

12There is a word that is clothed about with death: God grant that it be not found in the heritage of Jacob; for all such things shall be far from the godly, and they shall not wallow in their sins.

13Não acostumes a tua boca ao juramento desregrado, pois nele está a palavra do pecado.

13Use not thy mouth to intemperate swearing, for therein is the word of sin.

14Lembra-te de teu pai e de tua mãe quando te assentares entre os grandes. Não te esqueças diante deles, para que não te tornes insensato pelo teu costume, e desejes não ter nascido, e amaldiçoes o dia do teu nascimento.

14Remember thy father and thy mother, when thou sittest among great men. Be not forgetful before them, and so thou by thy custom become a fool, and wish that thou hadst not been born, and curse the day of thy nativity.

15O homem acostumado a palavras injuriosas nunca se corrigirá em todos os dias da sua vida.

15The man that is accustomed to opprobrious words will never be reformed all the days of his life.

16Duas espécies de homens multiplicam o pecado, e a terceira trará a ira: o ânimo ardente é como fogo que queima, nunca se apagará até ser consumido; o fornicador no corpo da sua carne nunca cessará até ter acendido um fogo.

16Two sorts of men multiply sin, and the third will bring wrath: a hot mind is as a burning fire, it will never be quenched till it be consumed: a fornicator in the body of his flesh will never cease till he hath kindled a fire.

17Todo pão é doce para o devasso; não desistirá até morrer.

17All bread is sweet to a whoremonger, he will not leave off till he die.

18O homem que quebra o matrimônio, dizendo assim no seu coração: Quem me vê? Estou cercado de trevas, as paredes me cobrem e ninguém me vê; que necessidade tenho de temer? O Altíssimo não se lembrará dos meus pecados;

18A man that breaketh wedlock, saying thus in his heart, Who seeth me? I am compassed about with darkness, the walls cover me, and no body seeth me; what need I to fear? the most High will not remember my sins:

19tal homem só teme os olhos dos homens, e não sabe que os olhos do Senhor são dez mil vezes mais brilhantes do que o sol, contemplando todos os caminhos dos homens e considerando as partes mais secretas.

19Such a man only feareth the eyes of men, and knoweth not that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter than the sun, beholding all the ways of men, and considering the most secret parts.

20Ele conhecia todas as coisas antes que fossem criadas; e assim também, depois de acabadas, olhou para todas elas.

20He knew all things ere ever they were created; so also after they were perfected he looked upon them all.

21Este homem será castigado nas ruas da cidade, e, onde não suspeita, será apanhado.

21This man shall be punished in the streets of the city, and where he suspecteth not he shall be taken.

22Assim acontecerá também à mulher que deixa o seu marido e lhe dá um herdeiro de outro.

22Thus shall it go also with the wife that leaveth her husband, and bringeth in an heir by another.

23Pois, primeiro, desobedeceu à lei do Altíssimo; em segundo lugar, pecou contra o seu próprio marido; e, em terceiro lugar, prostituiu-se em adultério e teve filhos de outro homem.

23For first, she hath disobeyed the law of the most High; and secondly, she hath trespassed against her own husband; and thirdly, she hath played the whore in adultery, and brought children by another man.

24Será levada à congregação, e far-se-á inquirição acerca dos seus filhos.

24She shall be brought out into the congregation, and inquisition shall be made of her children.

25Os seus filhos não lançarão raízes, e os seus ramos não darão fruto.

25Her children shall not take root, and her branches shall bring forth no fruit.

26Deixará a sua memória para ser amaldiçoada, e o seu opróbrio não será apagado.

26She shall leave her memory to be cursed, and her reproach shall not be blotted out.

27E os que ficarem saberão que não há nada melhor do que o temor do Senhor, e que não há nada mais doce do que atender aos mandamentos do Senhor.

27And they that remain shall know that there is nothing better than the fear of the Lord, and that there is nothing sweeter than to take heed unto the commandments of the Lord.

28Grande glória é seguir o Senhor, e ser recebido por ele é longa vida.

28It is great glory to follow the Lord, and to be received of him is long life.
