Eclesiástico 25

1Em três coisas fui embelezada e me levantei formosa diante de Deus e dos homens: a união dos irmãos, o amor dos próximos, o marido e a mulher que vivem em concórdia.

1In three things I was beautified, and stood up beautiful both before God and men: the unity of brethren, the love of neighbours, a man and a wife that agree together.

2Três espécies de homens a minha alma odeia, e muito me ofende a sua vida: o pobre soberbo, o rico mentiroso e o velho adúltero que caduca.

2Three sorts of men my soul hateth, and I am greatly offended at their life: a poor man that is proud, a rich man that is a liar, and an old adulterer that doateth.

3Se nada ajuntaste na tua juventude, como acharás alguma coisa na tua velhice?

3If thou hast gathered nothing in thy youth, how canst thou find any thing in thine age?

4Oh, quão bela coisa é o juízo para os cabelos brancos, e para os anciãos saber dar conselho!

4O how comely a thing is judgment for gray hairs, and for ancient men to know counsel!

5Oh, quão bela é a sabedoria dos anciãos, e o entendimento e o conselho nos homens honrados!

5O how comely is the wisdom of old men, and understanding and counsel to men of honour.

6Muita experiência é a coroa dos anciãos, e o temor de Deus é a sua glória.

6Much experience is the crown of old men, and the fear of God is their glory.

7Há nove coisas que no meu coração julguei felizes, e a décima direi com a minha língua: o homem que tem alegria nos seus filhos, e o que vive para ver a queda do seu inimigo;

7There be nine things which I have judged in mine heart to be happy, and the tenth I will utter with my tongue: A man that hath joy of his children; and he that liveth to see the fall of his enemy:

8feliz o que habita com uma mulher de entendimento, e o que não escorregou com a língua, e o que não serviu a um homem mais indigno do que ele;

8Well is him that dwelleth with a wife of understanding, and that hath not slipped with his tongue, and that hath not served a man more unworthy than himself:

9feliz o que achou a prudência, e o que fala aos ouvidos dos que querem ouvir;

9Well is him that hath found prudence, and he that speaketh in the ears of them that will hear:

10oh, quão grande é o que acha a sabedoria! Contudo, não há ninguém acima daquele que teme o Senhor.

10O how great is he that findeth wisdom! yet is there none above him that feareth the Lord.

11Mas o amor do Senhor excede todas as coisas em iluminação; quem o possui, a quem será comparado?

11But the love of the Lord passeth all things for illumination: he that holdeth it, whereto shall he be likened?

12O temor do Senhor é o princípio do seu amor, e a fé é o princípio de se apegar a ele.

12The fear of the Lord is the beginning of his love: and faith is the beginning of cleaving unto him.

13Dá-me qualquer praga, menos a praga do coração; e qualquer maldade, menos a maldade da mulher;

13Give me any plague, but the plague of the heart: and any wickedness, but the wickedness of a woman:

14e qualquer aflição, menos a aflição dos que me odeiam; e qualquer vingança, menos a vingança dos inimigos.

14And any affliction, but the affliction from them that hate me: and any revenge, but the revenge of enemies.

15Não há cabeça acima da cabeça da serpente, e não há ira acima da ira do inimigo.

15There is no head above the head of a serpent; and there is no wrath above the wrath of an enemy.

16Antes quisera habitar com um leão e um dragão do que morar em casa com uma mulher perversa.

16I had rather dwell with a lion and a dragon, than to keep house with a wicked woman.

17A maldade da mulher muda o seu rosto e escurece o seu semblante como um pano de saco.

17The wickedness of a woman changeth her face, and darkeneth her countenance like sackcloth.

18O seu marido se assentará entre os seus vizinhos, e, quando o ouvir, suspirará amargamente.

18Her husband shall sit among his neighbours; and when he heareth it shall sigh bitterly.

19Toda maldade é pequena ao pé da maldade da mulher; caia sobre ela a porção do pecador.

19All wickedness is but little to the wickedness of a woman: let the portion of a sinner fall upon her.

20Como a subida de um caminho arenoso para os pés do velho, assim é a mulher palradora para o homem sossegado.

20As the climbing up a sandy way is to the feet of the aged, so is a wife full of words to a quiet man.

21Não tropeces na beleza de uma mulher, e não a desejes pelo prazer.

21Stumble not at the beauty of a woman, and desire her not for pleasure.

22A mulher, se sustenta o seu marido, é cheia de ira, de atrevimento e de muita afronta.

22A woman, if she maintain her husband, is full of anger, impudence, and much reproach.

23A mulher perversa abate o ânimo, faz o semblante carregado e o coração ferido; a mulher que não consola o seu marido na aflição faz as mãos fracas e os joelhos vacilantes.

23A wicked woman abateth the courage, maketh an heavy countenance and a wounded heart: a woman that will not comfort her husband in distress maketh weak hands and feeble knees.

24Da mulher veio o princípio do pecado, e por ela todos morremos.

24Of the woman came the beginning of sin, and through her we all die.

25Não dês passagem à água, nem à mulher perversa liberdade de andar por fora.

25Give the water no passage; neither a wicked woman liberty to gad abroad.

26Se ela não andar como tu queres, corta-a da tua carne, e dá-lhe carta de divórcio, e deixa-a ir.

26If she go not as thou wouldest have her, cut her off from thy flesh, and give her a bill of divorce, and let her go.
