Eclesiástico 33

1Nenhum mal acontecerá àquele que teme o Senhor; mas na tentação ele o livrará outra vez.

1There shall no evil happen unto him that feareth the Lord; but in temptation even again he will deliver him.

2O homem sábio não odeia a lei; mas quem é hipócrita nela é como um navio na tempestade.

2A wise man hateth not the law; but he that is an hypocrite therein is as a ship in a storm.

3O homem de entendimento confia na lei, e a lei lhe é fiel como um oráculo.

3A man of understanding trusteth in the law; and the law is faithful unto him, as an oracle.

4Prepara o que hás de dizer, e assim serás ouvido; e ordena a instrução, e então responde.

4Prepare what to say, and so thou shalt be heard: and bind up instruction, and then make answer.

5O coração do insensato é como a roda de um carro, e os seus pensamentos são como um eixo que gira.

5The heart of the foolish is like a cartwheel; and his thoughts are like a rolling axletree.

6O cavalo garanhão é como um amigo zombador; relincha debaixo de todo aquele que o monta.

6A stallion horse is as a mocking friend, he neigheth under every one that sitteth upon him.

7Por que um dia excede o outro, se toda a luz de cada dia do ano vem do sol?

7Why doth one day excel another, when as all the light of every day in the year is of the sun?

8Pelo conhecimento do Senhor foram distinguidos, e ele mudou as estações e as festas.

8By the knowledge of the Lord they were distinguished: and he altered seasons and feasts.

9Alguns deles fez dias solenes e os santificou, e alguns deles fez dias comuns.

9Some of them hath he made high days, and hallowed them, and some of them hath he made ordinary days.

10E todos os homens são do pó, e Adão foi criado da terra.

10And all men are from the ground, and Adam was created of earth:

11Com muito conhecimento o Senhor os dividiu e fez diversos os seus caminhos.

11In much knowledge the Lord hath divided them, and made their ways diverse.

12Alguns deles abençoou e exaltou, e alguns deles santificou e pôs perto de si; mas alguns deles amaldiçoou e abateu, e os tirou dos seus lugares.

12Some of them hath he blessed and exalted, and some of them he sanctified, and set near himself: but some of them hath he cursed and brought low, and turned out of their places.

13Como o barro está na mão do oleiro, para o formar a seu gosto, assim o homem está na mão daquele que o fez, para lhe dar conforme melhor lhe parecer.

13As the clay is in the potter’s hand, to fashion it at his pleasure: so man is in the hand of him that made him, to render to them as liketh him best.

14O bem está posto contra o mal, e a vida contra a morte; assim o piedoso contra o pecador, e o pecador contra o piedoso.

14Good is set against evil, and life against death: so is the godly against the sinner, and the sinner against the godly.

15Olha, pois, para todas as obras do Altíssimo; são duas e duas, uma contra a outra.

15So look upon all the works of the most High; and there are two and two, one against another.

16Despertei por último de todos, como quem rebusca atrás dos vindimadores; pela bênção do Senhor prosperei e pisei o meu lagar como um vindimador.

16I awaked up last of all, as one that gathereth after the grapegatherers: by the blessing of the Lord I profited, and trod my winepress like a gatherer of grapes.

17Considerai que não trabalhei só para mim, mas para todos os que buscam a instrução.

17Consider that I laboured not for myself only, but for all them that seek learning.

18Ouvi-me, ó grandes do povo, e escutai com os vossos ouvidos, ó governantes da congregação.

18Hear me, O ye great men of the people, and hearken with your ears, ye rulers of the congregation.

19Não dês ao teu filho e à tua mulher, ao teu irmão e ao teu amigo, poder sobre ti enquanto viveres, e não dês os teus bens a outro, para que não te arrependas e tenhas de suplicar por eles outra vez.

19Give not thy son and wife, thy brother and friend, power over thee while thou livest, and give not thy goods to another: lest it repent thee, and thou intreat for the same again.

20Enquanto viveres e tiveres fôlego em ti, não te entregues a ninguém.

20As long as thou livest and hast breath in thee, give not thyself over to any.

21Pois melhor é que os teus filhos te busquem do que ficares tu à mercê da cortesia deles.

21For better it is that thy children should seek to thee, than that thou shouldest stand to their courtesy.

22Em todas as tuas obras guarda para ti a preeminência; não deixes mancha na tua honra.

22In all thy works keep to thyself the preeminence; leave not a stain in thine honour.

23No tempo em que acabares os teus dias e terminares a tua vida, distribui a tua herança.

23At the time when thou shalt end thy days, and finish thy life, distribute thine inheritance.

24Forragem, vara e cargas são para o jumento; e pão, correção e trabalho para o servo.

24Fodder, a wand, and burdens, are for the ass; and bread, correction, and work, for a servant.

25Se puseres o teu servo a trabalhar, acharás descanso; mas, se o deixares ocioso, ele buscará a liberdade.

25If thou set thy servant to labour, thou shalt find rest: but if thou let him go idle, he shall seek liberty.

26O jugo e a coleira dobram o pescoço; assim são as torturas e os tormentos para o servo mau.

26A yoke and a collar do bow the neck: so are tortures and torments for an evil servant.

27Manda-o trabalhar, para que não esteja ocioso; pois a ociosidade ensina muito mal.

27Send him to labour, that he be not idle; for idleness teacheth much evil.

28Põe-no a trabalhar, como lhe convém; se não for obediente, põe-lhe grilhões mais pesados.

28Set him to work, as is fit for him: if he be not obedient, put on more heavy fetters.

29Mas não sejas excessivo com ninguém, e nada faças sem discrição.

29But be not excessive toward any; and without discretion do nothing.

30Se tens um servo, seja ele para ti como tu mesmo, porque o compraste por preço.

30If thou have a servant, let him be unto thee as thyself, because thou hast bought him with a price.

31Se tens um servo, trata-o como irmão; pois tens necessidade dele como da tua própria alma; se o tratares mal e ele fugir de ti, por que caminho irás buscá-lo?

31If thou have a servant, entreat him as a brother: for thou hast need of him, as of thine own soul: if thou entreat him evil, and he run from thee, which way wilt thou go to seek him?
