1Todo amigo diz: Eu também sou seu amigo; mas há amigo que é amigo só no nome.

1Every friend saith, I am his friend also: but there is a friend, which is only a friend in name.

2Não é uma tristeza até a morte, quando um companheiro e amigo se torna inimigo?

2Is it not a grief unto death, when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy?

3Ó imaginação perversa, de onde vieste para cobrir a terra de engano?

3O wicked imagination, whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit?

4Há companheiro que se alegra com a prosperidade do amigo, mas no tempo da angústia será contra ele.

4There is a companion, which rejoiceth in the prosperity of a friend, but in the time of trouble will be against him.

5Há companheiro que ajuda o seu amigo por causa do ventre, e toma o escudo contra o inimigo.

5There is a companion, which helpeth his friend for the belly, and taketh up the buckler against the enemy.

6Não te esqueças do teu amigo no teu pensamento, e não te descuides dele nas tuas riquezas.

6Forget not thy friend in thy mind, and be not unmindful of him in thy riches.

7Todo conselheiro exalta o conselho; mas há quem aconselhe para si mesmo.

7Every counsellor extolleth counsel; but there is some that counselleth for himself.

8Guarda-te do conselheiro, e sabe primeiro que necessidade ele tem, pois aconselhará para si mesmo; para que não lance a sorte sobre ti

8Beware of a counsellor, and know before what need he hath; for he will counsel for himself; lest he cast the lot upon thee,

9e te diga: O teu caminho é bom; e depois fique do outro lado, para ver o que te acontecerá.

9And say unto thee, Thy way is good: and afterward he stand on the other side, to see what shall befall thee.

10Não te aconselhes com quem suspeita de ti, e esconde o teu conselho dos que te invejam.

10Consult not with one that suspecteth thee: and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee.

11Nem te aconselhes com uma mulher acerca daquela de quem ela tem ciúmes; nem com um covarde em coisas de guerra; nem com um mercador acerca de troca; nem com um comprador acerca de venda; nem com um invejoso acerca de gratidão; nem com um homem sem misericórdia acerca de bondade; nem com o preguiçoso acerca de trabalho algum; nem com um jornaleiro de um ano acerca de acabar a obra; nem com um servo ocioso acerca de muitos negócios: não dês ouvidos a estes em matéria alguma de conselho.

11Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous; neither with a coward in matters of war; nor with a merchant concerning exchange; nor with a buyer of selling; nor with an envious man of thankfulness; nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness; nor with the slothful for any work; nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work; nor with an idle servant of much business: hearken not unto these in any matter of counsel.

12Mas está continuamente com um homem piedoso, que sabes que guarda os mandamentos do Senhor, cujo ânimo é conforme o teu ânimo, e que se entristecerá contigo, se caíres.

12But be continually with a godly man, whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord, whose mind is according to thy mind, and will sorrow with thee, if thou shalt miscarry.

13E permaneça firme o conselho do teu próprio coração, pois não há homem mais fiel a ti do que ele.

13And let the counsel of thine own heart stand: for there is no man more faithful unto thee than it.

14Pois o ânimo do homem às vezes costuma dizer-lhe mais do que sete sentinelas que estão sentadas no alto de uma torre.

14For a man’s mind is sometime wont to tell him more than seven watchmen, that sit above in an high tower.

15E, acima de tudo isto, ora ao Altíssimo, para que dirija o teu caminho na verdade.

15And above all this pray to the most High, that he will direct thy way in truth.

16Vá a razão diante de toda empresa, e o conselho diante de toda ação.

16Let reason go before every enterprize, and counsel before every action.

17O semblante é sinal da mudança do coração.

17The countenance is a sign of changing of the heart.

18Quatro espécies de coisas aparecem: o bem e o mal, a vida e a morte; mas a língua domina sobre elas continuamente.

18Four manner of things appear: good and evil, life and death: but the tongue ruleth over them continually.

19Há quem seja sábio e ensine a muitos, e, contudo, seja inútil para si mesmo.

19There is one that is wise and teacheth many, and yet is unprofitable to himself.

20Há quem mostre sabedoria em palavras e seja odiado; esse ficará privado de todo alimento.

20There is one that sheweth wisdom in words, and is hated: he shall be destitute of all food.

21Pois não lhe é dada graça da parte do Senhor, porque está privado de toda sabedoria.

21For grace is not given him from the Lord, because he is deprived of all wisdom.

22Outro é sábio para si mesmo, e os frutos do entendimento são louváveis na sua boca.

22Another is wise to himself; and the fruits of understanding are commendable in his mouth.

23O homem sábio instrui o seu povo, e os frutos do seu entendimento não falham.

23A wise man instructeth his people; and the fruits of his understanding fail not.

24O homem sábio será cheio de bênção, e todos os que o virem o chamarão feliz.

24A wise man shall be filled with blessing; and all they that see him shall count him happy.

25Os dias da vida do homem podem ser contados; mas os dias de Israel são inumeráveis.

25The days of the life of man may be numbered: but the days of Israel are innumerable.

26O homem sábio herdará glória entre o seu povo, e o seu nome será perpétuo.

26A wise man shall inherit glory among his people, and his name shall be perpetual.

27Meu filho, prova a tua alma na tua vida, e vê o que lhe é mau, e não lho dês.

27My son, prove thy soul in thy life, and see what is evil for it, and give not that unto it.

28Pois nem todas as coisas são proveitosas a todos os homens, nem toda alma tem prazer em todas as coisas.

28For all things are not profitable for all men, neither hath every soul pleasure in every thing.

29Não sejas insaciável em nenhuma iguaria, nem demasiado guloso de comidas;

29Be not unsatiable in any dainty thing, nor too greedy upon meats:

30pois o excesso de comidas traz doença, e a glutonaria se converterá em cólera.

30For excess of meats bringeth sickness, and surfeiting will turn into choler.

31Pela glutonaria muitos pereceram; mas quem se guarda prolonga a sua vida.

31By surfeiting have many perished; but he that taketh heed prolongeth his life.
