1Não contendas com um homem poderoso, para que não caias nas suas mãos.

1Strive not with a mighty man, lest thou fall into his hands.

2Não estejas em desavença com um homem rico, para que não te sobrepuje; pois o ouro destruiu muitos e perverteu o coração dos reis.

2Be not at variance with a rich man, lest he overweigh thee: for gold hath destroyed many, and perverted the hearts of kings.

3Não contendas com um homem falador, e não amontoes lenha sobre o seu fogo.

3Strive not with a man that is full of tongue, and heap not wood upon his fire.

4Não gracejes com um homem grosseiro, para que os teus antepassados não sejam desonrados.

4Jest not with a rude man, lest thy ancestors be disgraced.

5Não censures o homem que se aparta do pecado, mas lembra-te de que todos somos dignos de castigo.

5Reproach not a man that turneth from sin, but remember that we are all worthy of punishment.

6Não desonres o homem na sua velhice; pois também alguns de nós envelhecemos.

6Dishonour not a man in his old age: for even some of us wax old.

7Não te alegres com a morte do teu maior inimigo, mas lembra-te de que todos morremos.

7Rejoice not over thy greatest enemy being dead, but remember that we die all.

8Não desprezes o discurso dos sábios, mas familiariza-te com os seus provérbios; pois deles aprenderás a instrução e a servir aos grandes com facilidade.

8Despise not the discourse of the wise, but acquaint thyself with their proverbs: for of them thou shalt learn instruction, and how to serve great men with ease.

9Não percas o discurso dos anciãos; pois também eles aprenderam de seus pais, e deles aprenderás o entendimento e a responder quando for necessário.

9Miss not the discourse of the elders: for they also learned of their fathers, and of them thou shalt learn understanding, and to give answer as need requireth.

10Não acendas as brasas do pecador, para que não sejas queimado pela chama do seu fogo.

10Kindle not the coals of a sinner, lest thou be burnt with the flame of his fire.

11Não te levantes irado diante do insolente, para que ele não te arme ciladas para te apanhar nas tuas palavras.

11Rise not up in anger at the presence of an injurious person, lest he lie in wait to entrap thee in thy words.

12Não emprestes a quem é mais poderoso do que tu; pois, se lhe emprestares, dá-o por perdido.

12Lend not unto him that is mightier than thyself; for if thou lendest him, count it but lost.

13Não sejas fiador acima das tuas posses; pois, se fores fiador, trata de pagar.

13Be not surety above thy power: for if thou be surety, take care to pay it.

14Não entres em juízo com um juiz; pois julgarão a favor dele, segundo a sua honra.

14Go not to law with a judge; for they will judge for him according to his honour.

15Não viajes com um homem temerário, para que não se te torne pesado; pois ele fará segundo a sua própria vontade, e tu perecerás com ele pela sua loucura.

15Travel not by the way with a bold fellow, lest he become grievous unto thee: for he will do according to his own will, and thou shalt perish with him through his folly.

16Não contendas com um homem irado, e não vás com ele a um lugar solitário; pois o sangue nada é aos seus olhos, e, onde não há socorro, ele te derrubará.

16Strive not with an angry man, and go not with him into a solitary place: for blood is as nothing in his sight, and where there is no help, he will overthrow thee.

17Não te aconselhes com o insensato; pois ele não pode guardar segredo.

17Consult not with a fool; for he cannot keep counsel.

18Não faças coisa secreta diante de um estranho; pois não sabes o que ele produzirá.

18Do no secret thing before a stranger; for thou knowest not what he will bring forth.

19Não abras o teu coração a todo homem, para que ele não te retribua com uma má jogada.

19Open not thine heart to every man, lest he requite thee with a shrewd turn.
