Epístola de Barnabé 13

1Vejamos agora se este povo ou o primeiro povo tem a herança, e se a aliança se referia a nós ou a eles.

1Now let us see whether this people or the first people hath the inheritance, and whether the covenant had reference to us or to them.

2Ouvi, pois, o que a Escritura diz a respeito do povo: E Isaque orou por Rebeca, sua mulher, pois era estéril. E ela concebeu. Então Rebeca foi consultar o Senhor. E o Senhor lhe disse: Duas nações há no teu ventre, e dois povos no teu seio, e um povo vencerá outro povo, e o maior servirá ao menor.

2Hear then what the scripture saith concerning the people; And Isaac prayed concerning Rebecca his wife, for she was barren. And she conceived. Then Rebecca went out to enquire of the Lord. And the Lord said unto her; Two nations are in thy womb, and two peoples in thy belly, and one people shall vanquish another people, and the greater shall serve the less.

3Deveis entender quem é Isaque, e quem é Rebeca, e em cujo caso Ele mostrou que um povo é maior do que o outro.

3Ye ought to understand who Isaac is, and who Rebecca is, and in whose case He hath shown that the one people is greater than the other.

4E em outra profecia Jacó fala mais claramente a José, seu filho, dizendo: Eis que o Senhor não me privou da tua face; traze-me os teus filhos, para que eu os abençoe.

4And in another prophecy Jacob speaketh more plainly to Joseph his son, saying; Behold, the Lord hath not bereft me of thy face; bring me thy sons, that I may bless them.

5E ele trouxe Efraim e Manassés, desejando que Manassés fosse abençoado, porque era o mais velho; pois José o conduzia para junto da mão direita de seu pai Jacó. Mas Jacó viu em espírito um tipo do povo que viria depois. E que diz? E Jacó cruzou as mãos, e pôs a sua mão direita sobre a cabeça de Efraim, o segundo e mais novo, e o abençoou. E José disse a Jacó: Passa a tua mão direita para a cabeça de Manassés, pois é o meu filho primogênito. E Jacó disse a José: Sei, meu filho, sei; mas o maior servirá ao menor. Contudo, este também será abençoado.

5And he brought Ephraim and Manasseh, desiring that Manasseh should be blessed, because he was the elder; for Joseph led him by the right hand of his father Jacob. But Jacob saw in the spirit a type of the people that should come afterwards. And what saith He? And Jacob crossed his hands, and placed his right hand on the head of Ephraim, the second and younger, and blessed him. And Joseph said unto Jacob, Transfer thy right hand to the head of Manasseh, for he is my first born son. And Jacob said to Joseph, I know it, my son, I know it; but the greater shall serve the less. Yet this one also shall be blessed.

6Observa em cujos casos Ele ordenou que este povo fosse o primeiro e herdeiro da aliança.

6Mark in whose cases He ordained that this people should be first and heir of the covenant.

7Se, então, além disto, Ele também o registrou por meio de Abraão, alcançamos a plenitude do nosso conhecimento. Que diz, então, a Abraão, quando somente ele creu, e lhe foi atribuído como justiça? Eis que te fiz, Abraão, pai de nações que creem em Deus na incircuncisão.

7If then besides this He also recorded it through Abraham, we attain the completion of our knowledge. What then saith he to Abraham when he alone believed, and was ascribed for righteousness? Behold I have made thee, Abraham, a father of nations that believe in God in uncircumcision.
