Epístola de Barnabé 4

1Convém-nos, portanto, investigar profundamente a respeito do presente e buscar as coisas que têm poder para nos salvar. Fujamos, pois, totalmente de todas as obras da iniquidade, para que as obras da iniquidade não nos dominem; e detestemos o erro do tempo presente, para que sejamos amados pelo que há de vir.

1It behooves us therefore to investigate deeply concerning the present, and to search out the things which have power to save us. Let us therefore flee altogether from all the works of lawlessness, lest the works of lawlessness overpower us; and let us loathe the error of the present time, that we may be loved for that which is to come.

2Não demos relaxamento à nossa alma, para que não tenha liberdade de conviver com pecadores e homens maus, para que porventura não nos tornemos semelhantes a eles.

2Let us give no relaxation to our soul that it should have liberty to consort with sinners and wicked men, lest haply we be made like unto them.

3A última ofensa está à mão, a respeito da qual a Escritura fala, como diz Enoque. Pois para este fim o Mestre abreviou as estações e os dias, para que o Seu amado se apressasse e viesse à Sua herança.

3The last offence is at hand, concerning which the scripture speaketh, as Enoch saith. For to this end the Master hath cut the seasons and the days short, that His beloved might hasten and come to His inheritance.

4E o profeta também fala deste modo: Dez reinos reinarão sobre a terra, e depois deles levantar-se-á outro rei, que abaterá três dos reis sob um só.

4And the prophet also speaketh on this wise; Ten reigns shall reign upon the earth, and after them shall arise another king, who shall bring low three of the kings under one.

5Do mesmo modo Daniel fala a respeito do mesmo: E vi a quarta besta, má e forte e mais intratável do que todas as bestas da terra, e como dela surgiram dez chifres, e destes um pequeno chifre e excrescência, e como este abateu sob um só três dos grandes chifres.

5In like manner Daniel speaketh concerning the same; And I saw the fourth beast to be wicked and strong and more intractable than all the beasts of the earth, and how there arose from him ten horns, and from these a little horn and excrescence, and how that it abased under one three of the great horns.

6Deveis, portanto, entender. Além disso, peço-vos ainda esta única coisa, como sendo um de vós e amando-vos a todos em particular mais do que à minha própria alma: que presteis atenção a vós mesmos agora, e não vos façais semelhantes a certas pessoas que acumulam pecado sobre pecado, dizendo que a nossa aliança permanece também para elas.

6Ye ought therefore to understand. Moreover I ask you this one thing besides, as being one of yourselves and loving you all in particular more than my own soul, to give heed to yourselves now, and not to liken yourselves to certain persons who pile up sin upon sin, saying that our covenant remains to them also.

7É nossa; mas eles a perderam para sempre desta maneira, quando Moisés acabava de recebê-la. Pois a Escritura diz: E Moisés esteve no monte jejuando quarenta dias e quarenta noites, e recebeu a aliança do Senhor, tábuas de pedra escritas com o dedo da mão do Senhor.

7Ours it is; but they lost it in this way for ever, when Moses had just received it. For the scripture saith; And Moses was in the mountain fasting forty days and forty nights, and he received the covenant from the Lord, even tablets of stone written with the finger of the hand of the Lord.

8Mas eles a perderam voltando-se para os ídolos. Pois assim diz o Senhor: Moisés, Moisés, desce depressa; porque o teu povo, que tiraste da terra do Egito, agiu ilicitamente. E Moisés entendeu, e lançou das mãos as duas tábuas; e a aliança deles foi despedaçada, para que a aliança do amado Jesus fosse selada em nossos corações na esperança que brota da fé n'Ele.

8But they lost it by turning unto idols. For thus saith the Lord; Moses, Moses, come down quickly; for thy people whom thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt hath done unlawfully. And Moses understood, and threw the two tables from his hands; and their covenant was broken in pieces, that the covenant of the beloved Jesus might be sealed unto our hearts in the hope which springeth from faith in Him.

9Mas, embora eu quisesse escrever muitas coisas, não como mestre, mas como convém a quem vos ama a não ficardes aquém do que possuímos, tive o cuidado de escrever-vos, sendo o vosso devotado servo. Por isso tomemos cuidado nestes últimos dias. Pois todo o tempo da nossa fé de nada nos aproveitará, se agora, na época da iniquidade e nas ofensas que haverão de vir, como convém a filhos de Deus, não oferecermos resistência, para que o Negro não efetue entrada.

9But though I would fain write many things, not as a teacher, but as becometh one who loveth you not to fall short of that which we possess, I was anxious to write to you, being your devoted slave. Wherefore let us take heed in these last days. For the whole time of our faith shall profit us nothing, unless we now, in the season of lawlessness and in the offenses that shall be, as becometh sons of God, offer resistance, that the Black One may not effect an entrance.

10Fujamos de toda vaidade, odiemos inteiramente as obras do caminho mau. Não fiqueis, entrando às ocultas, separados por vós mesmos, como se já estivésseis justificados, mas reuni-vos e consultai-vos a respeito do bem comum.

10Let us flee from all vanity, let us entirely hate the works of the evil way. Do not entering in privily stand apart by yourselves, as if ye were already justified, but assemble yourselves together and consult concerning the common welfare.

11Pois a Escritura diz: Ai dos que são sábios para si mesmos e entendidos aos seus próprios olhos. Tornemo-nos espirituais, tornemo-nos um templo perfeito para Deus. Na medida em que nos é possível, exercitemo-nos no temor de Deus, [e] esforcemo-nos por guardar os Seus mandamentos, para que nos alegremos nas Suas ordenanças.

11For the scripture saith; Woe unto them that are wise for themselves, and understanding in their own sight. Let us become spiritual, let us become a temple perfect unto God. As far as in us lies, let us exercise ourselves in the fear of God, [and] let us strive to keep His commandments, that we may rejoice in His ordinances.

12O Senhor julga o mundo sem acepção de pessoas; cada um receberá segundo as suas obras. Se for bom, a sua justiça irá adiante dele no caminho; se for mau, a recompensa da sua maldade está diante dele; para que porventura, se relaxarmos como homens que são chamados, não adormeçamos sobre os nossos pecados, e o príncipe do mal receba poder contra nós e nos lance fora do reino do Senhor.

12The Lord judgeth the world without respect of persons; each man shall receive according to his deeds. If he be good, his righteousness shall go before him in the way; if he be evil, the recompense of his evil-doing is before him; lest perchance, if we relax as men that are called, we should slumber over our sins, and the prince of evil receive power against us and thrust us out from the kingdom of the Lord.

13Além disso, entendei também isto, meus irmãos. Quando virdes que, depois de tantos sinais e prodígios operados em Israel, mesmo assim foram abandonados, prestemos atenção, para que porventura não sejamos achados, como diz a Escritura: muitos são chamados, mas poucos escolhidos.

13Moreover understand this also, my brothers. When ye see that after so many signs and wonders wrought in Israel, even then they were abandoned, let us give heed, lest haply we be found, as the scripture saith, many are called but few are chosen.
