Evangelho de Bartolomeu 2

1Ora, os apóstolos estavam no lugar (Querubim, Cheltura, Chritir) com Maria.

1Now the apostles were in the place (Cherubim, Cheltoura, Chritir) with Mary.

2E Bartolomeu veio e disse a Pedro, e André, e João: Perguntemos àquela que é altamente favorecida como concebeu o incompreensível, ou como deu à luz aquele que não pode ser carregado, ou como gerou tão grande grandeza. Mas eles hesitavam em perguntar-lhe.

2And Bartholomew came and said unto Peter and Andrew and John: Let us ask her that is highly favoured how she conceived the incomprehensible, or how she bare him that cannot be carried, or how she brought forth so much greatness. But they doubted to ask her.

3Bartolomeu disse, pois, a Pedro: Tu que és o chefe e meu mestre, aproxima-te e pergunta-lhe. Mas Pedro disse a João: Tu és virgem e imaculado (e amado), e deves perguntar-lhe.

3Bartholomew therefore said unto Peter: Thou that art the chief, and my teacher, draw near and ask her. But Peter said to John: Thou art a virgin and undefiled (and beloved) and thou must ask her.

4E como todos hesitavam e discutiam, Bartolomeu aproximou-se dela com semblante alegre e disse-lhe: Tu que és altamente favorecida, o tabernáculo do Altíssimo, sem mácula, nós, todos os apóstolos, te pedimos (ou Todos os apóstolos me enviaram para te pedir) que nos digas como concebeste o incompreensível, ou como deste à luz aquele que não pode ser carregado, ou como geraste tão grande grandeza.

4And as they all doubted and disputed, Bartholomew came near unto her with a cheerful countenance and said to her: Thou that art highly favoured, the tabernacle of the Most High, unblemished, we, even all the apostles, ask thee (or All the apostles have sent me to ask thee) to tell us how thou didst conceive the incomprehensible, or how thou didst bear him that cannot be carried, or how thou didst bring forth so much greatness.

5Mas Maria disse-lhes: Não me pergunteis (ou Perguntais-me de fato) sobre este mistério. Se eu começar a dizê-lo, sairá fogo da minha boca e consumirá todo o mundo.

5But Mary said unto them: Ask me not (or Do ye indeed ask me) concerning this mystery. If I should begin to tell you, fire will issue forth out of my mouth and consume all the world.

6Mas eles continuaram a pedir-lhe ainda mais. E ela, porque não podia recusar ouvir os apóstolos, disse: Levantemo-nos em oração.

6But they continued yet the more to ask her. And she, for she could not refuse to hear the apostles, said: Let us stand up in prayer.

7E os apóstolos puseram-se atrás de Maria: mas ela disse a Pedro: Pedro, tu que és o chefe, tu que és a grande coluna, estás atrás de nós? Não disse o nosso Senhor: a cabeça do homem é Cristo, mas a cabeça da mulher é o homem? agora, portanto, ficai diante de mim e orai.

7And the apostles stood behind Mary: but she said unto Peter: Peter, thou chief, thou great pillar, standest thou behind us? Said not our Lord: the head of the man is Christ but the head of the woman is the man? now therefore stand ye before me and pray.

8Mas eles disseram-lhe: Em ti o Senhor armou o seu tabernáculo, e foi do seu agrado que o contivesses, e tu deves ser a guia na oração.

8But they said unto her: In thee did the Lord set his tabernacle, and it was his good pleasure that thou shouldest contain him, and thou oughtest to be the leader in the prayer.

9Mas ela disse-lhes: Vós sois estrelas brilhantes, e como disse o profeta: 'Levantei os meus olhos para os montes, de onde me virá o socorro'; vós, portanto, sois os montes, e cabe a vós orar.

9But she said unto them: Ye are shining stars, and as the prophet said, 'I did lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence shall come mine help'; ye, therefore, are the hills, and it behoveth you to pray.

10Os apóstolos dizem-lhe: Tu deves orar, tu és a mãe do rei celestial.

10The apostles say unto her: Thou oughtest to pray, thou art the mother of the heavenly king.

11Maria diz-lhes: À vossa semelhança Deus formou os pardais, e os enviou aos quatro cantos do mundo.

11Mary saith unto them: In your likeness did God form the sparrows, and sent them forth into the four corners of the world.

12Mas eles dizem-lhe: Aquele que mal é contido pelos sete céus quis ser contido em ti.

12But they say unto her: He that is scarce contained by the seven heavens was pleased to be contained in thee.

13Então Maria levantou-se diante deles e estendeu as mãos para o céu e começou a falar assim: Elphué Zarethra Charboum Nemioth Melitho Thraboutha Mephnounos Chemiath Aroura Maridón Elisén Marmiadon Seption Hesaboutha Ennouna Saktinos Athodr Belelam Ophedth Abo Chrasar, que em língua grega é: Ó Deus excessivamente grande e sapientíssimo e rei dos mundos (eras), que não podes ser descrito, o inefável, que estabeleceste a grandeza dos céus e todas as coisas por uma palavra, que da escuridão (ou do desconhecido) constituíste e firmaste juntos os polos do céu em harmonia, deste forma à matéria que estava em confusão, puseste em ordem as coisas que estavam sem ordem, separaste a treva nebulosa da luz, estabeleceste num só lugar os fundamentos das águas, tu que fazes tremer os seres do ar e és o temor dos que estão sobre (ou sob) a terra, que firmaste a terra e não a deixaste perecer, e a enchestes, ela que é a nutridora de todas as coisas, com chuvas de bênção: (Filho do) Pai, tu a quem os sete céus mal continham, mas a quem foi do agrado ser contido sem dor em mim, tu que és em pessoa a palavra plena do Pai, na qual todas as coisas vieram a ser: dá glória ao teu excessivamente grande nome e manda-me falar diante dos teus santos apóstolos.

13Then Mary stood up before them and spread out her hands toward the heaven and began to speak thus: Elphué Zarethra Charboum Nemioth Melitho Thraboutha Mephnounos Chemiath Aroura Maridón Elisén Marmiadon Seption Hesaboutha Ennouna Saktinos Athodr Belelam Ophedth Abo Chrasar, which is in the Greek tongue: O God the exceeding great and all-wise and king of the worlds (ages), that art not to be described, the ineffable, that didst establish the greatness of the heavens and all things by a word, that out of darkness (or the unknown) didst constitute and fasten together the poles of heaven in harmony, didst bring into shape the matter that was in confusion, didst bring into order the things that were without order, didst part the misty darkness from the light, didst establish in one place the foundations of the waters, thou that makest the beings of the air to tremble, and art the fear of them that are on (or under) the earth, that didst settle the earth and not suffer it to perish, and filledst it, which is the nourisher of all things, with showers of blessing: (Son of) the Father, thou whom the seven heavens hardly contained, but who wast well-pleased to be contained without pain in me, thou that art thyself the full word of the Father in whom all things came to be: give glory to thine exceeding great name, and bid me to speak before thy holy apostles.

14E quando terminou a oração, começou a dizer-lhes: Sentemo-nos no chão; e vem tu, Pedro, o chefe, e senta-te à minha direita e põe a tua mão esquerda debaixo da minha axila; e tu, André, faze o mesmo à minha esquerda; e tu, João, o virgem, segura-me o peito; e tu, Bartolomeu, apoia os teus joelhos contra as minhas costas e segura-me os ombros, para que, quando eu começar a falar, os meus ossos não se soltem uns dos outros.

14And when she had ended the prayer she began to say unto them: Let us sit down upon the ground; and come thou, Peter the chief, and sit on my right hand and put thy left hand beneath mine armpit; and thou, Andrew, do so on my left hand; and thou, John, the virgin, hold together my bosom; and _ thou, Bartholomew, set thy knees against my back and hold my shoulders, lest when I begin to speak my bones be loosed one from another.

15E quando fizeram assim, ela começou a dizer: Quando eu permanecia no templo de Deus e recebia o meu alimento de um anjo, num certo dia apareceu-me alguém em figura de anjo, mas o seu rosto era incompreensível, e não tinha na mão pão nem cálice, como o anjo que me viera antes.

15And when they had so done she began to say: When I abode in the temple of God and received my food from an angel, on a certain day there appeared unto me one in the likeness of an angel, but his face was incomprehensible, and he had not in his hand bread or a cup, as did the angel which came to me aforetime.

16E logo o manto (véu) do templo se rasgou e houve um grandíssimo terremoto, e eu caí por terra, pois não era capaz de suportar a sua vista.

16And straightway the robe (veil) of the temple was rent and there was a very great earthquake, and I fell upon the earth, for I was not able to endure the sight of him.

17Mas ele pôs a mão debaixo de mim e me levantou, e olhei para o céu e veio uma nuvem de orvalho e me aspergiu da cabeça aos pés, e ele me enxugou com o seu manto.

17But he put his hand beneath me and raised me up, and I looked up into heaven and there came a cloud of dew and sprinkled me from the head to the feet, and he wiped me with his robe.

18E disse-me: Salve, tu que és altamente favorecida, o vaso escolhido, graça inesgotável. E bateu no seu manto do lado direito e veio um grandíssimo pão, e pô-lo sobre o altar do templo e comeu dele primeiro ele mesmo e deu-me também.

18And said unto me: Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the chosen vessel, grace inexhaustible. And he smote his garment upon the right hand and there came a very great loaf, and he set it upon the altar of the temple and did eat of it first himself, and gave unto me also.

19E de novo bateu no seu manto do lado esquerdo e veio um grandíssimo cálice cheio de vinho: e pô-lo sobre o altar do templo e bebeu dele primeiro ele mesmo, e deu-me também. E olhei e vi o pão e o cálice inteiros como estavam.

19And again he smote his garment upon the left hand and there came a very great cup full of wine: and he set it upon the altar of the temple and did drink of it first himself, and gave also unto me. And I beheld and saw the bread and the cup whole as they were.

20E disse-me: Ainda três anos, e enviarei a ti a minha palavra, e conceberás o meu (ou um) filho, e por meio dele será salva toda a criação. A paz esteja contigo, minha amada, e a minha paz estará contigo continuamente.

20And he said unto me: Yet three years, and I will send my word unto thee and thou shalt conceive my (or a) son, and through him shall the whole creation be saved. Peace be unto thee, my beloved, and my peace shall be with thee continually.

21E quando assim disse, desapareceu dos meus olhos, e o templo foi restaurado como estivera antes.

21And when he had so said he vanished away from mine eyes, and the temple was restored as it had been before.

22E enquanto ela dizia isto, saiu fogo da sua boca; e o mundo estava a ponto de acabar: mas Jesus apareceu depressa e disse a Maria: Não reveles este mistério, ou hoje toda a minha criação chegará ao fim. E os apóstolos foram tomados de temor, para que porventura o Senhor não se irasse com eles.

22And as she was saying this, fire issued out of her mouth; and the world was at the point to come to an end: but Jesus appeared quickly and said unto Mary: Utter not this mystery, or this day my whole creation will come to an end. And the apostles were taken with fear lest haply the Lord should be wroth with them.
