Evangelho de Bartolomeu 4

1E tomou-os e levou-os de novo ao monte das Oliveiras.

1And he took them and brought them again unto the Mount of Olives.

2E Pedro disse a Maria: Tu que és altamente favorecida, roga ao Senhor que nos revele as coisas que estão nos céus.

2And Peter said unto Mary: Thou that art highly favoured, entreat the Lord that he would reveal unto us the things that are in the heavens.

3E Maria disse a Pedro: Ó pedra talhada da rocha, não edificou o Senhor a sua igreja sobre ti? Vai tu, pois, primeiro e pergunta-lhe.

3And Mary said unto Peter: O stone hewn out of the rock, did not the Lord build his church upon thee? Go thou therefore first and ask him.

4Diz Pedro de novo: Ó tabernáculo que estás estendido por toda parte, convém-te perguntar.

4Peter saith again: O tabernacle that art spread abroad it behoveth thee to ask.

5Diz Maria: Tu és a imagem de Adão: não foi ele formado primeiro e depois Eva? Olha para o sol, que segundo a semelhança de Adão é brilhante, e para a lua, que por causa da transgressão de Eva está cheia de barro. Pois Deus pôs Adão no oriente e Eva no ocidente, e estabeleceu as luzes de modo que o sol brilhasse sobre a terra para Adão no oriente, em seus carros de fogo, e a lua no ocidente desse luz a Eva com um semblante como leite. E ela contaminou o mandamento do Senhor. Por isso a lua foi manchada de barro e a sua luz não é brilhante. Tu, portanto, sendo a semelhança de Adão, deves perguntar-lhe: mas em mim ele foi contido, para que eu recuperasse a força da mulher.

5Mary saith: Thou art the image of Adam: was not he first formed and then Eve? Look upon the sun, that according to the likeness of Adam it is bright, and upon the moon, that because of the transgression of Eve it is full of clay. For God did place Adam in the east and Eve in the west, and appointed the lights that the sun should shine on the earth unto Adam in the east in his fiery chariots, and the moon in the west should give light unto Eve with a countenance like milk. And she defiled the commandment of the Lord. Therefore was the moon stained with clay and her light is not bright. Thou therefore, since thou art the likeness of Adam, oughtest to ask him: but in me was he contained that I might recover the strength of the female.

6Ora, quando subiram ao cimo do monte, e o Mestre se afastou deles um pouco, Pedro diz a Maria: Tu és aquela que anulou a transgressão de Eva, mudando-a de vergonha em alegria; é lícito, portanto, que tu perguntes.

6Now when they came up to the top of the mount, and the Master was withdrawn from them a little space, Peter saith unto Mary: Thou art she that hast brought to nought the transgression of Eve, changing it from shame into joy; it is lawful, therefore, for thee to ask.

7Quando Jesus apareceu de novo, Bartolomeu diz-lhe: Senhor, mostra-nos o adversário dos homens, para que o contemplemos, de que feição é, e qual é a sua obra, e de onde sai, e que poder tem, que nem a ti poupou, mas fez que fosses pendurado no madeiro.

7When Jesus appeared again, Bartholomew saith unto him: Lord, show us the adversary of men that we may behold him, of what fashion he is, and what is his work, and whence he cometh forth, and what power he hath that he spared not even thee, but caused thee to be hanged upon the tree.

8Mas Jesus olhou para ele e disse: Coração ousado! pedes o que não és capaz de olhar.

8But Jesus looked upon him and said: Thou bold heart! thou askest for that which thou art not able to look upon.

9Mas Bartolomeu perturbou-se e caiu aos pés de Jesus e começou a falar assim: Ó lâmpada que não se pode apagar, Senhor Jesus Cristo, criador da luz eterna, que deste aos que te amam a graça que tudo embeleza, e nos deste a luz eterna com a tua vinda ao mundo, que ... a essência celeste por uma palavra ... cumpriste a obra do Pai, converteste o pudor de Adão em alegria, desfizeste a tristeza de Eva com um semblante alegre pelo teu nascimento de uma virgem: não te lembres do mal contra mim, mas concede-me a palavra do meu pedido.

9But Bartholomew was troubled and fell at Jesus' feet and began to speak thus: O lamp that cannot be quenched, Lord Jesu Christ, maker of the eternal light, that hast given unto them that love thee the grace that beautifieth all, and hast given us the eternal light by thy coming into the world, that hast... the heavenly essence by a word... hast accomplished the work of the Father, hast turned the shamefacedness of Adam into mirth, hast done away the sorrow of Eve with a cheerful countenance by thy birth from a virgin: remember not evil against me but grant me the word of mine asking.

10E enquanto ele assim falava, Jesus levantou-o e disse-lhe: Bartolomeu, queres ver o adversário dos homens? Digo-te que, quando o contemplares, não só tu, mas o resto dos apóstolos e Maria cairão sobre os seus rostos e ficarão como cadáveres.

10And as he thus spake, Jesus raised him up and said unto him: Bartholomew, wilt thou see the adversary of men? I tell thee that when thou beholdest him, not thou only but the rest of the apostles and Mary will fall on your faces and become as dead corpses.

11Mas todos lhe disseram: Senhor, deixa-nos contemplá-lo.

11But they all said unto him: Lord, let us behold him.

12E levou-os para baixo do monte das Oliveiras, e olhou com ira para os anjos que guardam o inferno (Tártaro), e acenou a Miguel que tocasse a trombeta na altura dos céus. E Miguel tocou, e a terra tremeu, e Beliar subiu, seguro por 660 anjos e atado com cadeias de fogo.

12And he led them down from the Mount of Olives and looked wrathfully upon the angels that keep hell (Tartarus), and beckoned unto Michael to sound the trumpet in the height of the heavens. And Michael sounded, and the earth shook, and Beliar came up, being held by 660 angels and bound with fiery chains.

13E o comprimento dele era de 1.600 côvados e a sua largura de 40 côvados, e o seu rosto era como um relâmpago de fogo e os seus olhos cheios de trevas. E das suas narinas saía uma fumaça fedorenta; e a sua boca era como o abismo de um precipício, e uma das suas asas tinha oitenta côvados.

13And the length of him was 1,600 cubits and his breadth 40 cubits, and his face was like a lightning of fire and his eyes full of darkness. And out of his nostrils came a stinking smoke; and his mouth was as the gulf of a precipice, and the one of his wings was four-score cubits.

14E logo que os apóstolos o viram, caíram por terra sobre o rosto e ficaram como mortos.

14And straightway when the apostles saw him, they fell to the earth on their faces and became as dead.

15Mas Jesus aproximou-se e levantou os apóstolos e deu-lhes um espírito de poder, e diz a Bartolomeu: Aproxima-te, Bartolomeu, e pisa com os teus pés o seu pescoço, e ele te dirá a sua obra, qual é, e como engana os homens.

15But Jesus came near and raised the apostles and gave them a spirit of power, and he saith unto Bartholomew: Come near, Bartholomew, and trample with thy feet on his neck, and he will tell thee his work, what it is, and how he deceiveth men.

16E Jesus ficou ao longe com o resto dos apóstolos.

16And Jesus stood afar off with the rest of the apostles.

17E Bartolomeu teve medo, e levantou a voz e disse: Bendito seja o nome do teu reino imortal desde agora e para sempre. E quando terminou de falar, Jesus lho permitiu, dizendo: Vai e pisa o pescoço de Beliar: e Bartolomeu correu depressa contra ele e pisou-lhe o pescoço: e Beliar tremeu.

17And Bartholomew feared, and raised his voice and said: Blessed be the name of thine immortal kingdom from henceforth even for ever. And when he had spoken, Jesus permitted him, saying: Go and tread upon the neck of Beliar: and Bartholomew ran quickly upon him and trode upon his neck: and Beliar trembled.

18E Bartolomeu teve medo, e fugiu, e disse a Jesus: Senhor, dá-me uma orla das tuas vestes, para que eu tenha coragem de me aproximar dele.

18And Bartholomew was afraid, and fled, and said unto Jesus: Lord, give me an hem of thy garments that I may have courage to draw near unto him.

19Mas Jesus disse-lhe: Não podes tomar uma orla das minhas vestes, pois estas não são as vestes que eu usava antes de ser crucificado.

19But Jesus said unto him: Thou canst not take an hem of my garments, for these are not my garments which I wore before I was crucified.

20E Bartolomeu disse: Senhor, temo que, assim como ele não poupou os teus anjos, também me engula a mim.

20And Bartholomew said: Lord, I fear lest, like as he spared not thine angels, he swallow me up also.

21Jesus diz-lhe: Não foram todas as coisas feitas pela minha palavra, e pela vontade de meu Pai os espíritos foram sujeitos a Salomão? tu, portanto, sendo mandado pela minha palavra, vai em meu nome e pergunta-lhe o que quiseres.

21Jesus saith unto him: Were not all things made by my word, and by the will of my Father the spirits were made subject unto Solomon? thou, therefore, being commanded by my word, go in my name and ask him what thou wilt.

22E Bartolomeu fez o sinal da cruz e orou a Jesus e foi por trás dele. E Jesus disse-lhe: Aproxima-te. E quando Bartolomeu se aproximou, acendeu-se fogo de todos os lados, de modo que as suas vestes pareciam de fogo. Jesus diz a Bartolomeu: Como te disse, pisa o seu pescoço e pergunta-lhe qual é o seu poder. E Bartolomeu foi e pisou-lhe o pescoço, e apertou-lhe o rosto contra a terra até as orelhas.

22And Bartholomew made the sign of the cross and prayed unto Jesus and went behind him. And Jesus said to him: Draw near. And as Bartholomew drew near, fire was kindled on every side, so that his garments appeared fiery. Jesus saith to Bartholomew: As I said unto thee, tread upon his neck and ask him what is his power. And Bartholomew went and trode upon his neck, and pressed down his face into the earth as far as his ears.

23E Bartolomeu diz-lhe: Dize-me quem és e qual é o teu nome. E ele disse-lhe: Alivia-me um pouco, e te direi quem sou, e como vim aqui, e qual é a minha obra e qual é o meu poder.

23And Bartholomew saith unto him: Tell me who thou art and what is thy name. And he said to him: Lighten me a little, and I will tell thee who I am and how I came hither, and what my work is and what my power is.

24E ele aliviou-o e diz-lhe: Dize tudo o que fizeste e tudo o que fazes.

24And he lightened him and saith to him: Say all that thou hast done and all that thou doest.

25E Beliar respondeu e disse: Se queres saber o meu nome, no princípio chamava-me Satanael, que se interpreta mensageiro de Deus, mas quando rejeitei a imagem de Deus, o meu nome foi chamado Satanás, isto é, um anjo que guarda o inferno (Tártaro).

25And Beliar answered and said: If thou wilt know my name, at the first I was called Satanael, which is interpreted a messenger of God, but when I rejected the image of God my name was called Satanas, that is, an angel that keepeth hell (Tartarus).

26E Bartolomeu diz-lhe de novo: Revela-me todas as coisas e não me escondas nada.

26And again Bartholomew saith unto him: Reveal unto me all things and hide nothing from me.

27E ele disse-lhe: Juro-te pelo poder da glória de Deus que, ainda que eu quisesse esconder alguma coisa, não posso, pois está perto aquele que me convenceria. Pois, se eu pudesse, vos teria destruído como a um dos que foram antes de vós.

27And he said unto him: I swear unto thee by the power of the glory of God that even if I would hide aught I cannot, for he is near that would convict me. For if I were able I would have destroyed you like one of them that were before you.

28Pois, de fato, fui formado o primeiro anjo: pois quando Deus fez os céus, tomou um punhado de fogo e formou-me primeiro, Miguel segundo, Gabriel terceiro, Uriel quarto, Rafael quinto, Natanael sexto, e outros anjos cujos nomes não posso dizer. Pois eles são os lictores de Deus, e me ferem com as suas varas e me perseguem sete vezes de noite e sete vezes de dia, e não me deixam de modo algum e quebram em pedaços todo o meu poder. Estes são os anjos de vingança que estão diante do trono de Deus: estes são os anjos que foram formados primeiro.

28For, indeed, I was formed the first angel: for when God made the heavens, he took a handful of fire and formed me first, Michael second, Gabriel third, Uriel fourth, Raphael fifth, Nathanael sixth, and other angels of whom I cannot tell the names. For they are the rod-bearers (lictors) of God, and they smite me with their rods and pursue me seven times in the night and seven times in the day, and leave me not at all and break in pieces all my power. These are the angels of vengeance which stand before the throne of God: these are the angels that were first formed.

29E depois deles foram formados todos os anjos. No primeiro céu há cem miríades, e no segundo cem miríades, e no terceiro cem miríades, e no quarto cem miríades, e no quinto cem miríades, e no sexto cem miríades, e no sétimo está o primeiro firmamento (superfície plana), onde estão os poderes que operam sobre os homens.

29And after them were formed all the angels. In the first heaven are an hundred myriads, and in the second an hundred myriads, and in the third an hundred myriads, and in the fourth an hundred myriads, and in the fifth an hundred myriads, and in the sixth an hundred myriads, and in the seventh is the first firmament (flat surface) wherein are the powers which work upon men.

30Pois há outros quatro anjos postos sobre os ventos. O primeiro anjo está sobre o norte, e chama-se Chairoum, e tem na mão uma vara de fogo, e reprime o excesso de umidade, para que a terra não fique molhada demais.

30For there are four other angels set over the winds. The first angel is over the north, and he is called Chairoum, and hath in his hand a rod of fire, and restraineth the superfluity of moisture that the earth be not overmuch wet.

31E o anjo que está sobre o norte chama-se Oertha: tem uma tocha de fogo e a põe nos seus flancos, e eles aquecem o grande frio dele, para que não congele o mundo.

31And the angel that is over the north is called Oertha: he hath a torch of fire and putteth it to his sides, and they warm the great coldness of him that he freeze not the world.

32E o anjo que está sobre o sul chama-se Kerkoutha, e eles quebram a sua fúria, para que não sacuda a terra.

32And the angel that is over the south is called Kerkoutha, and they break his fierceness that he shake not the earth.

33E o anjo que está sobre o sudoeste chama-se Naoutha, e tem na mão uma vara de neve e a põe na sua boca, e apaga o fogo que sai da sua boca. E se o anjo não o apagasse na sua boca, poria fogo em todo o mundo.

33And the angel that is over the south-west is called Naoutha, and he hath a rod of snow in his hand and putteth it into his mouth, and quencheth the fire that cometh out of his mouth. And if the angel quenched it not at his mouth it would set all the world on fire.

34E há outro anjo sobre o mar, que o torna revolto com as suas ondas.

34And there is another angel over the sea which maketh it rough with the waves thereof.

35Mas o resto não to direi, pois aquele que está presente não me permite.

35But the rest I will not tell thee, for he that standeth by suffereth me not.

36Bartolomeu diz-lhe: Como castigas as almas dos homens?

36Bartholomew saith unto him: How chastisest thou the souls of men?

37Beliar diz-lhe: Queres que te declare o castigo dos hipócritas, dos maldizentes, dos zombadores, dos idólatras, e dos avarentos, e dos adúlteros, e dos feiticeiros, e dos adivinhos, e dos que creem em nós, e de todos os que eu olho (engano?)

37Beliar saith unto him: Wilt thou that I declare unto thee the punishment of the hypocrites, of the backbiters, of the jesters, of the idolaters, and the covetous, and the adulterers, and the wizards, and the diviners, and of them that believe in us, and of all whom I look upon (deceive?)

38Bartolomeu diz-lhe: Quero que o declares em poucas palavras.

38Bartholomew saith unto him: I will that thou declare it in few words.

39E ele bateu os dentes uns nos outros, rangendo-os, e subiu do abismo sem fundo uma roda que tinha uma espada flamejando de fogo, e na espada havia canos.

39And he smote his teeth together, gnashing them, and there came up out of the bottomless pit a wheel having a sword flashing with fire, and in the sword were pipes.

40E eu (ele) lhe perguntei, dizendo: Que espada é esta?

40And I (he) asked him, saying: What is this sword?

41E ele disse: Esta espada é a espada dos glutões: pois neste cano são enviados os que por sua gula inventam toda sorte de pecado; no segundo cano são enviados os maldizentes que difamam secretamente o próximo; no terceiro cano são enviados os hipócritas e o resto dos que derrubo com a minha astúcia.

41And he said: This sword is the sword of the gluttonous: for into this pipe are sent they that through their gluttony devise all manner of sin; into the second pipe are sent the backbiters which backbite their neighbour secretly; into the third pipe are sent the hypocrites and the rest whom I overthrow by my contrivance.

42E Bartolomeu disse: Fazes então tu sozinho estas coisas?

42And Bartholomew said: Dost thou then do these things by thyself alone?

43E Satanás disse: Se eu pudesse sair por mim mesmo, teria destruído o mundo inteiro em três dias: mas nem eu nem nenhum dos seiscentos saímos. Pois temos outros ministros ligeiros a quem mandamos, e os munimos de um anzol de muitas pontas e os enviamos a caçar, e eles apanham para nós almas de homens, seduzindo-as com a doçura de várias iscas, isto é, pela embriaguez e o riso, pela maledicência, a hipocrisia, os prazeres, a fornicação, e o resto das ninharias que saem dos seus tesouros.

43And Satan said: If I were able to go forth by myself, I would have destroyed the whole world in three days: but neither I nor any of the six hundred go forth. For we have other swift ministers whom we command, and we furnish them with an hook of many points and send them forth to hunt, and they catch for us souls of men, enticing them with sweetness of divers baits, that is by drunkenness and laughter, by backbiting, hypocrisy, pleasures, fornication, and the rest of the trifles that come out of their treasures.

44E dir-te-ei também o resto dos nomes dos anjos. O anjo do granizo chama-se Mermedth, e segura o granizo sobre a cabeça, e os meus ministros o conjuram e o enviam para onde querem. E há outros anjos sobre a neve, e outros sobre o trovão, e outros sobre o relâmpago, e quando algum espírito dos nossos quer sair por terra ou por mar, esses anjos lançam pedras de fogo e incendeiam os nossos membros.

44And I will tell thee also the rest of the names of the angels. The angel of the hail is called Mermedth, and he holdeth the hail upon his head, and my ministers do adjure him and send him whither they will. And other angels are there over the snow, and other over the thunder, and other over the lightning, and when any spirit of us would go forth either by land or by sea, these angels send forth fiery stones and set our limbs on fire.

45Bartolomeu diz: Cala-te (sê amordaçado), dragão do abismo.

45Bartholomew saith: Be still (be muzzled) thou dragon of the pit.

46E Beliar disse: Muitas coisas te direi dos anjos. Os que correm juntos pelos lugares celestes e terrestres são estes: Mermedth, Onomatath, Douth, Melioth, Charouth, Graphathas, Oethra, Nephonos, Chalkatoura. Com eles voam (são administradas?) as coisas que estão no céu, e na terra, e debaixo da terra.

46And Beliar said: Many things will I tell thee of the angels. They that run together throughout the heavenly places and the earthly are these: Mermedth, Onomatath, Douth, Melioth, Charouth, Graphathas, Oethra, Nephonos, Chalkatoura. With them do fly (are administered?) the things that are in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

47Bartolomeu diz-lhe: Cala-te (sê amordaçado) e desfalece, para que eu suplique ao meu Senhor.

47Bartholomew saith unto him: Be still (be muzzled) and be faint, that I may entreat my Lord.

48E Bartolomeu caiu de bruços e lançou terra sobre a cabeça e começou a dizer: Ó Senhor Jesus Cristo, o grande e glorioso nome. Todos os coros dos anjos te louvam, ó Mestre, e eu, que sou indigno, com os meus lábios ... te louvo, ó Mestre. Ouve-me, teu servo, e assim como me escolheste da coletoria e não permitiste que eu levasse a minha vida até o fim nas minhas obras anteriores, ó Senhor Jesus Cristo, ouve-me e tem misericórdia dos pecadores.

48And Bartholomew fell upon his face and cast earth upon his head and began to say: O Lord Jesu Christ, the great and glorious name. All the choirs of the angels praise thee, O Master, and I that am unworthy with my lips... do praise thee, O Master. Hearken unto me thy servant, and as thou didst choose me from the receipt of custom and didst not suffer me to have my conversation unto the end in my former deeds, O Lord Jesu Christ, hearken unto me and have mercy upon the sinners.

49E quando ele assim disse, o Senhor diz-lhe: Levanta-te, deixa levantar-se aquele que geme: eu te declararei o resto.

49And when he had so said, the Lord saith unto him: Rise up, suffer him that groaneth to arise: I will declare the rest unto thee.

50E Bartolomeu levantou Satanás e disse-lhe: Vai para o teu lugar, com os teus anjos; mas o Senhor tem misericórdia de todo o seu mundo.

50And Bartholomew raised up Satan and said unto him: Go unto thy place, with thine angels; but the Lord hath mercy upon all his world.

51Mas o diabo disse: Permite-me, e te direi como fui lançado neste lugar e como o Senhor fez o homem.

51But the devil said: Suffer me, and I will tell thee how I was cast down into this place and how the Lord did make man.

52Eu ia e vinha pelo mundo, e Deus disse a Miguel: Traze-me um torrão dos quatro cantos da terra, e água dos quatro rios do paraíso. E quando Miguel os trouxe, Deus formou Adão nas regiões do oriente, e deu forma ao torrão que era informe, e estendeu sobre ele nervos e veias e o firmou com articulações; e adorou-o, ele mesmo por si mesmo primeiro, porque era a imagem de Deus; por isso o adorou.

52I was going to and fro in the world, and God said unto Michael: Bring me a clod from the four corners of the earth, and water out of the four rivers of paradise. And when Michael brought them God formed Adam in the regions of the east, and shaped the clod which was shapeless, and stretched sinews and veins upon it and established it with joints; and he worshipped him, himself for his own sake first, because he was the image of God, therefore he worshipped him.

53E quando eu vim dos confins da terra, Miguel disse: Adora a imagem de Deus, que ele fez conforme a sua semelhança. Mas eu disse: Sou fogo de fogo, fui o primeiro anjo formado, e hei de adorar barro e matéria?

53And when I came from the ends of the earth Michael said: Worship thou the image of God, which he hath made according to his likeness. But I said: I am fire of fire, I was the first angel formed, and shall I worship clay and matter?

54E Miguel diz-me: Adora, para que Deus não se irrite contigo. Mas eu lhe disse: Deus não se irritará comigo; mas porei o meu trono defronte do seu trono, e serei como ele é. Então Deus irou-se comigo e lançou-me abaixo, tendo ordenado que se abrissem as janelas do céu.

54And Michael saith to me: Worship, lest God be wroth with thee. But I said to him: God will not be wroth with me; but I will set my throne over against his throne, and I will be as he is. Then was God wroth with me and cast me down, having commanded the windows of heaven to be opened.

55E quando fui lançado abaixo, perguntou também aos seiscentos que estavam sob mim se queriam adorar: mas eles disseram: Assim como vimos o primeiro anjo fazer, tampouco nós adoraremos aquele que é menor do que nós. Então os seiscentos também foram lançados por ele abaixo comigo.

55And when I was cast down, he asked also the six hundred that were under me, if they would worship: but they said: Like as we have seen the first angel do, neither will we worship him that is less than ourselves. Then were the six hundred also cast down by him with me.

56E quando fomos lançados sobre a terra, ficamos inconscientes por quarenta anos; e quando o sol resplandeceu sete vezes mais brilhante que o fogo, de repente despertei; e olhei em redor e vi os seiscentos que estavam sob mim inconscientes.

56And when we were cast down upon the earth we were senseless for forty years; and when the sun shone forth seven times brighter than fire, suddenly I awaked; and I looked about and saw the six hundred that were under me senseless.

57E despertei meu filho Salpsan e o tomei por conselheiro sobre como poderia enganar o homem por causa de quem fui expulso dos céus.

57And I awaked my son Salpsan and took him to counsel how I might deceive the man on whose account I was cast out of the heavens.

58E assim o planejei. Tomei um frasco na mão e raspei o suor do meu peito e os pelos das minhas axilas, e lavei-me nas fontes das águas donde saem os quatro rios, e Eva bebeu dela e o desejo veio sobre ela: pois se ela não tivesse bebido daquela água, eu não teria podido enganá-la.

58And thus did I contrive it. I took a vial in mine hand and scraped the sweat from off my breast and the hair of mine armpits, and washed myself in the springs of the waters whence the four rivers flow out, and Eve drank of it and desire came upon her: for if she had not drunk of that water I should not have been able to deceive her.

59Então Bartolomeu mandou-o ir para o inferno.

59Then Bartholomew commanded him to go into hell.

60E Bartolomeu veio e caiu aos pés de Jesus e começou a dizer com lágrimas: Abba, Pai, que és impenetrável a nós, Palavra do Pai, a quem os sete céus mal continham, mas a quem foi do agrado ser contido facilmente e sem dor no corpo da Virgem: a quem a Virgem não soube que dera à luz: tu com o teu pensamento ordenaste que todas as coisas existissem: tu nos dás o que precisamos antes que te peçamos.

60And Bartholomew came and fell at Jesus' feet and began with tears to say thus: Abba, Father, that art past finding out by us, Word of the Father, whom the seven heavens hardly contained, but who wast pleased to be contained easily and without pain within the body of the Virgin: whom the Virgin knew not that she bare: thou by thy thought hast ordained all things to be: thou givest us that which we need before thou art entreated.

61Tu que usaste uma coroa de espinhos para preparar para nós, que nos arrependemos, a preciosa coroa do céu; que foste pendurado no madeiro, que (falta uma oração): (que bebeste vinho misturado com fel) para nos dar a beber do vinho da compunção, e foste traspassado no lado com uma lança para nos encher do teu corpo e do teu sangue:

61Thou that didst wear a crown of thorns that thou mightest prepare for us that repent the precious crown from heaven; that didst hang upon the tree, that (a clause gone): (that didst drink wine mingled with gall) that thou mightest give us to drink of the wine of compunction, and wast pierced in the side with a spear that thou mightest fill us with thy body and thy blood:

62Tu que deste nomes aos quatro rios: ao primeiro Fison, por causa da fé (pistis) que apareceste no mundo para pregar; ao segundo Geon, porque o homem foi feito de terra (gê); ao terceiro Tigre, porque por ti nos foi revelada a Trindade consubstancial nos céus (para fazer algum sentido disto devemos ler Trigis); ao quarto Eufrates, porque pela tua presença no mundo fizeste toda alma alegrar-se (euphránai) mediante a palavra da imortalidade.

62Thou that gavest names unto the four rivers: to the first Phison, because of the faith (pistis) which thou didst appear in the world to preach; to the second Geon, for that man was made of earth (gé); to the third Tigris, because by thee was revealed unto us the consubstantial Trinity in the heavens (to make anything of this we must read Trigis); to the fourth Euphrates, because by thy presence in the world thou madest every soul to rejoice (euphránai) through the word of immortality.

63Meu Deus e Pai, o maior, meu Rei: salva, Senhor, os pecadores.

63My God, and Father, the greatest, my King: save, Lord, the sinners.

64Quando ele assim orou, Jesus disse-lhe: Bartolomeu, meu Pai me deu o nome de Cristo, para que eu descesse à terra e ungisse todo homem que vem a mim com o óleo da vida: e chamou-me Jesus para que eu curasse todo pecado dos que não sabem ... e desse aos homens a verdade de Deus.

64When he had thus prayed Jesus said unto him: Bartholomew, my Father did name me Christ, that I might come down upon earth and anoint every man that cometh unto me with the oil of life: and he did call me Jesus that I might heal every sin of them that know not...and give unto men the truth of God.

65E de novo Bartolomeu diz-lhe: Senhor, é lícito revelar estes mistérios a todo homem?

65And again Bartholomew saith unto him: Lord, is it lawful for me to reveal these mysteries unto every man?

66Jesus diz-lhe: Bartolomeu, meu amado, a todos quantos são fiéis e são capazes de guardá-los para si, a esses podes confiar estas coisas. Pois há alguns que são dignos deles, mas há também outros a quem não convém confiá-los: pois são vãos (fanfarrões), bêbados, soberbos, impiedosos, partícipes da idolatria, autores de fornicação, maldizentes, mestres de tolice, e praticantes de todas as obras que são do diabo, e por isso não são dignos de que estas coisas lhes sejam confiadas.

66Jesus saith unto him: Bartholomew, my beloved, as many as are faithful and are able to keep them unto themselves, to them mayest thou entrust these things. For some there are that be worthy of them, but there are also other some unto whom it is not fit to entrust them: for they are vain (swaggerers), drunkards, proud, unmerciful, partakers in idolatry, authors of fornication, slanderers, teachers of foolishness, and doing all works that are of the devil, and therefore are they not worthy that these should be entrusted to them.

67E também são secretas, por causa dos que não podem contê-las; pois todos quantos podem contê-las terão parte nelas. Nisto (Até aqui?), portanto, meu amado, te falei, pois bem-aventurado és tu e toda a tua parentela, que por sua escolha têm esta palavra confiada a si; pois todos os que podem contê-la receberão tudo o que quiserem no dia do meu julgamento.

67And also they are secret, because of those that cannot contain them; for as many as can contain them shall have a part in them. Herein (Hitherto?), therefore, my beloved, have I spoken unto thee, for blessed art thou and all thy kindred which of their choice have this word entrusted unto them; for all they that can contain it shall receive whatsoever they will in the day of my judgement.

68Então eu, Bartolomeu, que escrevi estas coisas no meu coração, tomei a mão do Senhor, amigo dos homens, e comecei a regozijar-me e a falar assim: Glória a ti, ó Senhor Jesus Cristo, que dás a todos a tua graça, que todos nós percebemos. Aleluia. Glória a ti, ó Senhor, a vida dos pecadores. Glória a ti, ó Senhor, a morte é posta em vergonha. Glória a ti, ó Senhor, o tesouro da justiça. Pois a Deus cantamos.

68Then I, Bartholomew, which wrote these things in mine heart, took hold on the hand of the Lord the lover of men and began to rejoice and to speak thus: Glory be to thee, O Lord Jesus Christ, that givest unto all thy grace which all we have perceived. Alleluia. Glory be to thee, O Lord, the life of sinners. Glory be to thee, O Lord, death is put to shame. Glory be to thee, O Lord, the treasure of righteousness. For unto God do we sing.

69E enquanto Bartolomeu assim falava de novo, Jesus tirou o manto e tomou um lenço do pescoço de Bartolomeu e começou a regozijar-se e a dizer: Sou bom. Aleluia. Sou manso e gentil. Aleluia. Glória a ti, ó Senhor: pois dou dons a todos os que me desejam. Aleluia. Glória a ti, ó Senhor, pelos séculos sem fim. Amém. Aleluia.

69And as Bartholomew thus spake again, Jesus put off his mantle and took a kerchief from the neck of Bartholomew and began to rejoice and say: I am good. Alleluia. I am meek and gentle. Alleluia. Glory be to thee, O Lord: for I give gifts unto all them that desire me. Alleluia. Glory be to thee, O Lord, world without end. Amen. Alleluia.

70E quando ele cessou, os apóstolos o beijaram, e ele lhes deu a paz do amor.

70And when he had ceased, the apostles kissed him, and he gave them the peace of love.
