1A declaração de Paulo: «Como Janes e Jambres resistiram a Moisés» (2 Tm 3:8), não se encontra nas Escrituras públicas, mas num livro secreto (apócrifo) intitulado Livro de Janes e Jambres.

1Paul's statement, 'As Jannes and Mambres withstood Moses' (2 Tim. iii. 8) is not found in the 'public' scriptures, but in a secret (apocryphal) book entitled the Book of Jannes and Mambres.

2Pois Janes e Jambres eram irmãos, magos ou envenenadores dos egípcios, os quais pensavam que podiam resistir, pela arte de sua magia, às poderosas obras de Deus que se realizavam por meio deles.

2For Jannes and Mambres were brothers, magicians or poisoners, of the Egyptians, who thought they could resist by the art of their magic the mighty works of God which were being accomplished through them.

3Mas, quando o poder de Moisés em suas obras se mostrou maior, eles foram humilhados e confessaram, com a dor de suas feridas, que era Deus quem operava em Moisés.

3But when the might of Moses in his works proved greater, they were humbled, and confessed, with the pain of their wounds, that it was God that wrought in Moses.

4Moisés castigou Janes e Jambres com chagas e enviou à morte a mãe de um deles.

4Moses chastised Jannes and Jambres with sores and sent the mother of one of them to death.

5Jambres abriu os livros mágicos de seu irmão Janes, praticou a necromancia e fez subir do inferno a sombra de seu irmão.

5Mambres opened the magical books of his brother Jannes, and did necromancy and brought up from hell the shade of his brother.

6A alma de Janes respondeu-lhe, dizendo: Eu, teu irmão, não morri injustamente, mas na verdade com justiça, e o juízo será contra mim, pois fui mais sábio do que todos os magos sábios, e resisti aos dois irmãos, Moisés e Arão, que fizeram grandes sinais e maravilhas; por isso morri e fui descido de entre os homens para o inferno, onde há grande ardor e a cova (lago) da perdição, de onde não se sobe.

6The soul of Jannes answered him saying: I thy brother died not unjustly, but of a truth justly, and judgment will go against me, for I was wiser than all wise magicians, and I withstood the two brethren, Moses and Aaron, who did great signs and wonders: therefore died I and was brought down from among men into hell, where there is great burning, and the pit (lake) of perdition, whence there is no coming up.

7E agora, meu irmão Jambres, cuida de ti mesmo durante a tua vida para fazeres o bem a teus filhos e a teus amigos; pois no inferno não há nada de bom, mas tristeza e trevas; e quando tiveres morrido e estiveres no inferno entre os mortos, a tua morada e o teu assento terão vinte (provavelmente dois) côvados de largura e quatro côvados de comprimento.

7And now, my brother Mambres, take heed to thyself in thy lifetime to do good to thy sons and thy friends: for in hell there is nothing of good, but sadness and darkness: and when thou shalt have died and shalt be in hell among the dead, thy dwelling-place and thy abode (seat) will be twenty (probably two) cubits broad and four cubits long.

8Eles, no meio de suas maravilhas mentirosas, reconheceram o dedo de Deus, mas eu estava inteiramente obstinado em que não havia Deus.

8They in the midst of their lying wonders acknowledged the finger of God, but I was wholly set upon it that there was no God.

9Se Deus não perdoou àqueles que até em parte O reconheceram, como haveria de perdoar a mim, que O ignorei por completo?

9If God did not pardon them who even partly recognized Him, how should He pardon me who ignored Him altogether?

10Eles mostram, àqueles que procuram contemplar, as faces (ou pessoas) dos que dormiram na terra desde os séculos.

10They show, to them that seek to behold, the faces (or persons) that have slept in the earth from the ages.

11Mas a respeito dos montes falaram Janes e Jambres, indicando o sinal da manjedoura do Senhor; e a respeito da pedra, pela qual se deu a pedra do sepulcro, como também foi dito pelo profeta: A pedra que os edificadores rejeitaram.

11But concerning the mountains Jannes and Jambres spake, signifying the sign of the manger of the Lord; and concerning the stone whereby the stone of the tomb, as also it was said by the prophet: The stone which the builders rejected.

12No tempo de Moisés, os magos se levantaram contra o filho de Anrão, mas o dedo de Deus os venceu, como eles mesmos também confessaram.

12In the time of Moses the magicians rose up against the son of Amram: but the finger of God overcame them, as they themselves also confessed.

13A justiça de Deus feriu os homens ímpios com uma chaga maligna, para que, mesmo contra a vontade deles, proclamassem a verdade; pois a Verdade costuma suportar com paciência até que os enganadores se arrependam, mas, quando se ensoberbecem e se julgam seguros, são lançados na cova.

13The righteousness of God smote the wicked men with an evil sore, that even against their will they might proclaim the truth: for the Truth is wont to bear patiently until deceivers repent: but when they are puffed up and think themselves safe, then are they cast down into the pit.

14Pois, quando Moisés foi enviado para tirar o povo do Egito, por ordem do Senhor de Faraó veio a Faraó e lhe anunciou a ordem de Deus.

14For when Moses was sent to bring the people out of Egypt, at the bidding of Pharaoh's Lord he came to Pharaoh and told him the command of God.

15Quando Faraó ouviu isso, foi tomado de cólera e furor e entregou-se à blasfêmia; e, quando o fato foi divulgado por toda a cidade e chegou aos ouvidos dos nobres daquelas paragens, alguns disseram: É a ordem de Deus e deve ser obedecida a todo custo.

15When Pharaoh heard it he was driven to rage and fury and turned to blasphemy; and when the matter was published throughout the city and was come to the ears of the nobles of those parts, some said: It is the command of God and must be obeyed at all costs.

16Mas o rei, quando viu Moisés, temeu e começou a sentir o castigo que pairava sobre ele.

16But the King, when he saw Moses, feared, and began to feel the punishment that hung over him.

17Haverá alguém que não tema à vista do Senhor? ou quem não tremeria ao contemplar a Deus? Assim Faraó temeu a Moisés, porque ele era o deus de Faraó.

17Is there any that does not fear at the sight of the Lord? or who would not tremble at beholding God? So Pharaoh feared Moses, because he was the god of Pharaoh.

18Toda a multidão dos magos do Egito apressou-se a reunir-se para ver uma nova maravilha, pois no semblante de Moisés estava o anjo de fogo e vento, superando o brilho do sol e do relâmpago, de modo que quem quer que fitasse os olhos nele o julgava um deus; mas aqueles que ouviam a sua voz — pois ele era gago e hesitava na fala — desprezavam-no e desdenhavam dele como homem.

18The whole multitude of the magicians of Egypt hasted together to see a new marvel, for in the face of Moses was the angel of fire and wind, surpassing the brightness of the sun and of lightning, so that whoever fixed his eyes on him took him for a god; but they who heard his voice—for he was stammering and stuttered—despised and contemned him as a man.

19E um afirmava que ele descera do céu, enquanto outro o julgava de nenhum valor; pois dizia: Se houvesse nele alguma grande virtude, certamente ele teria curado a si mesmo.

19And one affirmed that he was come down from heaven: another set him wholly at naught: for, said he, if there were any great thing in him, surely he would have healed himself.

20Ora, Moisés, como ouvistes, conhecia bem a língua daquele país; educado na casa de Faraó, havia absorvido toda a sabedoria dos egípcios, como o Apóstolo nos testifica a respeito dele.

20Now Moses, as you have heard, knew the tongue of that country well; bred up in the house of Pharaoh, he had drunk in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, as the Apostle witnesses to us of him.

21E, embora ele mesmo não o percebesse, tinha o Espírito Santo habitando nele, de quem havia aprendido tudo o que acontecera desde Adão até os seus próprios dias, e não ignorava o que os magos tramavam contra ele.

21And though he were not aware of it himself, yet he had the Holy Spirit dwelling in him, from whom he had learned all that had happened from Adam even to his own days, and was not ignorant of what the magicians were plotting against him.

22Convocou, pois, Faraó todos os magos e os seus discípulos e lhes falou acerca de Moisés desta maneira: É chegado o tempo de manifestardes, para o bem comum, todo o poder que tiverdes.

22So Pharaoh called together all the magicians and their disciples and spoke to them of Moses thus: It is now time that whatever power you have you should put forth for the common good.

23Quando a guerra cai sobre nós, há necessidade de homens valentes, e a perícia dos médicos manifesta-se quando as enfermidades grassam.

23When war is upon us there is need of mighty men, and the skill of physicians appears then when diseases are rife.

24Por todo o mundo os povos rirão de nós com grande desonra para o nosso nome, se formos vencidos por este gago e tartamudo.

24Throughout all the world the people will laugh at us with great disgrace of our name if we are overcome by this stammering stutterer.

25Sede, portanto, fortes no combate até alcançarmos a vitória; pelejai valorosamente até triunfarmos.

25Be therefore strong in conflict till we bear off victory: contend valiantly till we triumph.

26Não há homem que não conheça o nosso nome ou não vos exalte como operadores de maravilhas; vós costumáveis ser ajudadores até mesmo de reis quando a guerra os acometia.

26There is no man who knows not our name or extols you not as workers of wonders: we (ye?) have been wont to be helpers even of Kings when war came upon them.

27Se, pois, nos virem transformados em motivo de riso diante de um gago, muito mais seremos desprezados por todos os outros homens.

27If then they see us made a laughing-stock to a stammerer, much more shall we be despised by all other men.

28Levantai-vos, pois, revesti-vos de ânimo varonil e ide à peleja como heróis de renome, para que alcancemos um nome eterno, e todos os que ouvirem falar disto fiquem tomados de temor e não ousem resistir ao nosso povo.

28Up then, put on a manly spirit, and go forth to battle like heroes of renown, that we may gain an eternal name; and so all who hear of it may be smitten with fear and not dare to resist our people.

29E, ainda que eu sobressaia em dignidade real, sustento a causa comum convosco; para todos nós haverá igual honra ou igual vergonha.

29And though I excel in royal dignity, yet I uphold the common cause with you: to all of us there will be like honour or like shame.

30Os magos, incitados por essas palavras, como se estivessem embriagados de vinho, prometeram mares e montanhas a Faraó, rei do Egito.

30The magicians, stirred by these words, as if made drunk with wine, promised seas and mountains to Pharaoh King of Egypt.

31O sol, disseram eles, não tornará a nascer para iluminar o Egito antes que o filho de Anrão deixe de viver.

31The sun, said they, shall not again rise to lighten Egypt before the son of Amram has ceased to live.

32No momento em que tu, ó rei, descansares em sono tranquilo no teu leito, ouvirás que Moisés foi castigado com uma morte vergonhosa.

32What time thou, O King, takest quiet slumber in thy bed, then shalt thou hear that Moses has been punished by a shameful death.

33E a isto, na verdade, consideramos como nada: é brincadeira de criança.

33And this, indeed, we account as nothing: it is child's play.

34Entra, pois, no teu aposento, sobe ao teu leito e dorme; porque a morte de Moisés está às portas, e ele não verá outro dia, podes crer em nós.

34Come then, enter thy chamber and climb up upon thy bed and sleep: for the death of Moses is at the doors, and he shall not, believe us, see another day.

35Assim os magos se retiraram da presença de Faraó.

35Thus the magicians left Pharaoh.

36E ele, crendo nas palavras deles, não podia dormir por causa de sua impaciência, aguardando o romper do dia; e, se dormisse, não encontraria repouso sem que as mesmas imagens lhe viessem ao sono.

36And he, believing their words, could not sleep for his impatience, looking for the dawn of day: nor, had he slept, could he rest without the coming of the same images to him in his slumber.

37Eles, porém, exercendo suas artes, invocaram demônios e os enviaram contra Moisés.

37But they, practising their arts, called up devils and sent them against Moses.

38Os espíritos malignos arremeteram em multidões contra o homem santo; mas o poder de Deus e a oração do justo os repeliram, como a tempestade dissipa o fogo e o vento espalha a fumaça.

38The evil spirits rushed in hosts upon the holy man: but the power of God and the prayer of the righteous one drove them back as the storm scatters the fire and the wind the smoke.

39Assim fugiram os demônios da presença de Moisés, como os vencidos fogem na batalha diante dos vencedores, e como os ladrões dão as costas ao ouvirem a voz dos guardas que se aproximam.

39So did the demons fly from the face of Moses as the conquered flee in battle before the victors, and thieves turn their backs when they hear the voices of the watchmen approaching.

40Assim como a luz dissipa as trevas, assim Moisés afugentou os malignos.

40As light dispels darkness, so did Moses drive away the wicked ones.

41Precipitadamente retornaram aos magos que os haviam contratado e disseram: Perdemos o nosso trabalho contra este homem, pois ele é mais forte do que nós, e não podemos sequer nos aproximar do termo do lugar onde ele habita.

41Headlong they returned to the magicians by whom they had been hired; and, said they: We lose our labour against this man, for he is stronger than we, and we cannot get near to the border of the place where he dwells.

42Entrementes, despontou o dia, e Faraó esperava ansiosamente que se cumprisse o que os magos lhe haviam prometido a respeito da morte de Moisés.

42Meanwhile the day dawned, and Pharaoh anxiously expected that what the magicians had promised him, of the death of Moses, should have been fulfilled.

43Mas, passado o tempo determinado, e não aparecendo ninguém para dar as notícias que desejava, o rei chamou os magos e lhes falou desta sorte: Por que o fato sucedeu de modo diverso daquele que prometestes? pois dissestes que Moisés não veria outro dia após este.

43But when the appointed time was past, and there came none to tell the tidings he desired, the King called the magicians and spake thus to them: Why, said he, hath the matter fallen out otherwise than as you promised? for you said, Moses shall not see another day after this.

44Os magos lhe responderam: Tem um pouco de paciência; a morte deste homem está de fato próxima, mas não podemos agir precipitadamente, ó rei, e este dia não o permite, porque hoje é lua nova; quando a lua começar a minguar, falecerá a vida de Moisés.

44The magicians said to him: Have patience a little: the man's death is indeed near, but we can do nothing in haste, O King, and this day allows it not, for to-day it is new moon: when the moon begins to wane, then shall the life of Moses fail.

45Este foi o pretexto que alegaram diante dele, até que chegasse a hora determinada para Moisés; e o rei acolheu de bom grado as palavras deles, estando sujeito aos mesmos enganos que eles.

45This was the cause they pretended to him, until the appointed hour should come to Moses: but the King received their words gladly, being subject to the same errors as they.

46Puseram-se, pois, os magos a trabalhar: tomaram uma porção dos cabelos e das vestes de Moisés, fizeram uma imagem dele, guardaram-na num túmulo e instigaram contra ela os espíritos malignos.

46The magicians therefore set to work: they took somewhat of the hairs and garments of Moses, and made an image of him, and laid it up in a tomb, and set evil demons against it.

47Imediatamente vieram os demônios e os seus príncipes; Satanás estava pronto com as suas hostes, todos eles sob diversas formas, para destruir Moisés.

47Immediately the demons came, and the princes of them: Satan was ready with his hosts, all of them in divers forms, to destroy Moses.

48Arremeteram contra ele em bando.

48They ran against him in a troop.

49Mas, quando levantaram os olhos para o santo profeta e o viram cercado por uma hoste de anjos, como acontecera outrora a Eliseu, não puderam suportar o seu olhar, e muito menos atacá-lo, e todos juntos fugiram em desordem, entre gritos e uivos.

49But when they lifted up their eyes to the holy prophet and saw him encompassed by a host of angels, like as it was once with Elisha, they could not bear the look of him, much less attack him, and all together they fled away in confusion with cries and howlings.

50Este acontecimento deixou os magos perplexos.

50This thing brought the magicians to perplexity.

51Recorreram, por conseguinte, a outros meios para salvarem o seu nome e não serem achados culpados de falsidade e mentira perante o rei.

51They turned therefore to other means to save their name and not be found guilty of deceit and lying before the King.

52Tomaram, pois, uma taça cheia de vinho e, por meio de seus encantamentos, forçaram víboras e dragões a expelirem ali o seu veneno; e, estando tudo pronto, deram a taça a Moisés para que a bebesse e rebentasse.

52Accordingly they took a cup full of wine and by their enchantments compelled vipers and dragons to spue their venom into it; and when it was ready they gave the cup to Moses, that he might drink it and burst asunder.

53Toma, disseram eles, este vinho que o rei do Egito te envia, e bebe-o, pois a este ápice de honra ele deseja que sejas elevado, como desde muito almejava; e este mesmo vinho é semelhante ao desejo do rei, pois é antigo e, com o decurso do tempo, tornou-se turvo e escuro.

53Take, said they, this wine which the King of Egypt sends thee, and drink it, for to this pinnacle of honour he will have thee raised, as he hath long ago desired; and this wine itself is like the desire of the King, for it is old, and by reason of length of time is become muddy and dark.

54A isto sorriu Moisés, tomou a taça, abençoou-a em nome de Deus e bebeu o vinho sem dano algum.

54At this Moses smiled, and took the cup and signed it in the name of God and drank the wine without any hurt.

55Mas, para que soubessem que o engano deles não lhe ficara oculto, voltou-se para eles e disse: Ide, dizei ao rei, que me enviou a beber vinho misturado com peçonha de serpentes, que nenhuma destas coisas causa dano algum aos servos de Deus.

55But that they might know that their deceit was not hidden from him, he turned to them and said: Come, tell the King, who hath sent me to drink wine mingled with the poison of serpents, that none of these things do any hurt to the servants of God.

56Até aqui a respeito de Moisés e dos Magos.

56Thus far concerning Moses and the Magicians.
