1E no décimo oitavo ano, no dia vinte e dois do primeiro mês, falou-se na casa de Nabucodonosor, rei dos assírios, de que ele se vingaria, como dissera, de toda a terra.

1And in the eighteenth year, the two and twentieth day of the first month, there was talk in the house of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians that he should, as he said, avenge himself on all the earth.

2Então convocou todos os seus oficiais e todos os seus nobres, e comunicou-lhes o seu conselho secreto, e decidiu pela sua própria boca a ruína de toda a terra.

2So he called unto him all his officers, and all his nobles, and communicated with them his secret counsel, and concluded the afflicting of the whole earth out of his own mouth.

3Então decretaram destruir toda carne que não obedecesse à ordem da sua boca.

3Then they decreed to destroy all flesh, that did not obey the commandment of his mouth.

4E, terminado o conselho, Nabucodonosor, rei dos assírios, chamou Holofernes, general do seu exército, que era o segundo depois dele, e lhe disse:

4And when he had ended his counsel, Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians called Holofernes the chief captain of his army, which was next unto him, and said unto him,

5Assim diz o grande rei, senhor de toda a terra: Eis que sairás da minha presença e tomarás contigo homens que confiam na sua própria força, cento e vinte mil infantes, e doze mil cavalos com os seus cavaleiros.

5Thus saith the great king, the lord of the whole earth, Behold, thou shalt go forth from my presence, and take with thee men that trust in their own strength, of footmen an hundred and twenty thousand; and the number of horses with their riders twelve thousand.

6E irás contra toda a terra do ocidente, porque desobedeceram à minha ordem.

6And thou shalt go against all the west country, because they disobeyed my commandment.

7E anunciarás aos que lá estão que me preparem terra e água; pois sairei na minha ira contra eles, e cobrirei toda a face da terra com os pés do meu exército, e os entregarei como despojo aos meus soldados;

7And thou shalt declare unto them that they prepare for me earth and water: for I will go forth in my wrath against them and will cover the whole face of the earth with the feet of mine army, and I will give them for a spoil unto them:

8de modo que os seus mortos encherão os seus vales e as suas torrentes, e o rio se encherá dos seus cadáveres até transbordar;

8So that their slain shall fill their valleys and brooks and the river shall be filled with their dead, till it overflow:

9e os levarei cativos até os confins de toda a terra.

9And I will lead them captives to the utmost parts of all the earth.

10Tu, pois, sairás e tomarás de antemão para mim todos os seus territórios; e, se se renderem a ti, tu os guardarás para mim até o dia do seu castigo.

10Thou therefore shalt go forth, and take beforehand for me all their coasts: and if they will yield themselves unto thee, thou shalt reserve them for me till the day of their punishment.

11Mas, quanto aos rebeldes, o teu olho não os poupe; entrega-os à matança e saqueia-os por onde quer que fores.

11But concerning them that rebel, let not thine eye spare them; but put them to the slaughter, and spoil them wheresoever thou goest.

12Pois, pela minha vida e pelo poder do meu reino, tudo o que eu disse, eu o farei pela minha mão.

12For as I live, and by the power of my kingdom, whatsoever I have spoken, that will I do by mine hand.

13E tu guarda-te de transgredir qualquer dos mandamentos do teu senhor, mas cumpre-os inteiramente, como te ordenei, e não demores em executá-los.

13And take thou heed that thou transgress none of the commandments of thy lord, but accomplish them fully, as I have commanded thee, and defer not to do them.

14Então Holofernes saiu da presença do seu senhor, e convocou todos os governadores e capitães, e os oficiais do exército de Assur;

14Then Holofernes went forth from the presence of his lord, and called all the governors and captains, and the officers of the army of Assur;

15e alistou os homens escolhidos para a batalha, como o seu senhor lhe ordenara, cento e vinte mil, e doze mil arqueiros a cavalo;

15And he mustered the chosen men for the battle, as his lord had commanded him, unto an hundred and twenty thousand, and twelve thousand archers on horseback;

16e ordenou-os como se ordena um grande exército para a guerra.

16And he ranged them, as a great army is ordered for the war.

17E tomou camelos e jumentos para as bagagens, em número muito grande; e ovelhas, bois e cabras sem número para o seu sustento;

17And he took camels and asses for their carriages, a very great number; and sheep and oxen and goats without number for their provision:

18e abundância de víveres para cada homem do exército, e muitíssimo ouro e prata da casa do rei.

18And plenty of victual for every man of the army, and very much gold and silver out of the king’s house.

19Então partiu ele com todo o seu exército, para ir adiante do rei Nabucodonosor na expedição, e cobrir toda a face da terra, para o ocidente, com os seus carros, e cavaleiros, e infantes escolhidos.

19Then he went forth and all his power to go before king Nabuchodonosor in the voyage, and to cover all the face of the earth westward with their chariots, and horsemen, and their chosen footmen.

20Também uma grande multidão de diversas terras veio com eles, como gafanhotos e como a areia da terra; pois a multidão não tinha número.

20A great number also sundry countries came with them like locusts, and like the sand of the earth: for the multitude was without number.

21E saíram de Nínive, caminho de três dias, em direção à planície de Bectilete, e acamparam desde Bectilete, perto do monte que fica à esquerda da Cilícia superior.

21And they went forth of Nineve three days’ journey toward the plain of Bectileth, and pitched from Bectileth near the mountain which is at the left hand of the upper Cilicia.

22Então tomou todo o seu exército, a infantaria, a cavalaria e os carros, e foi dali para a região montanhosa;

22Then he took all his army, his footmen, and horsemen and chariots, and went from thence into the hill country;

23e destruiu Fude e Lude, e saqueou todos os filhos de Rassés, e os filhos de Israel que estavam para o lado do deserto, ao sul da terra dos queleus.

23And destroyed Phud and Lud, and spoiled all the children of Rasses, and the children of Israel, which were toward the wilderness at the south of the land of the Chellians.

24Então passou o Eufrates, e atravessou a Mesopotâmia, e destruiu todas as cidades altas que estavam junto ao rio Arbonai, até o mar.

24Then he went over Euphrates, and went through Mesopotamia, and destroyed all the high cities that were upon the river Arbonai, till ye come to the sea.

25E tomou os limites da Cilícia, e matou todos os que lhe resistiram, e chegou aos limites de Jafé, que ficavam para o sul, defronte da Arábia.

25And he took the borders of Cilicia, and killed all that resisted him, and came to the borders of Japheth, which were toward the south, over against Arabia.

26Cercou também todos os filhos de Midiã, e queimou as suas tendas, e saqueou os seus apriscos.

26He compassed also all the children of Madian, and burned up their tabernacles, and spoiled their sheepcotes.

27Então desceu à planície de Damasco no tempo da colheita do trigo, e queimou todos os seus campos, e destruiu os seus rebanhos e as suas manadas; também saqueou as suas cidades, e devastou totalmente as suas terras, e feriu todos os seus jovens a fio de espada.

27Then he went down into the plain of Damascus in the time of wheat harvest, and burnt up all their fields, and destroyed their flocks and herds, also he spoiled their cities, and utterly wasted their countries, and smote all their young men with the edge of the sword.

28Por isso o medo e o terror dele caíram sobre todos os habitantes do litoral, os que estavam em Sidom e em Tiro, e os que habitavam em Sur e Ocina, e todos os que habitavam em Jâmnia; e os que habitavam em Azoto e Ascalom o temeram grandemente.

28Therefore the fear and dread of him fell upon all the inhabitants of the sea coasts, which were in Sidon and Tyrus, and them that dwelt in Sur and Ocina, and all that dwelt in Jemnaan; and they that dwelt in Azotus and Ascalon feared him greatly.
