1Então foi anunciado a Holofernes, general do exército de Assur, que os filhos de Israel se tinham preparado para a guerra, e fechado as passagens da região montanhosa, e fortificado todos os cumes dos montes altos, e posto obstáculos nas planícies.

1Then was it declared to Holofernes, the chief captain of the army of Assur, that the children of Israel had prepared for war, and had shut up the passages of the hill country, and had fortified all the tops of the high hills and had laid impediments in the champaign countries:

2Com isso ele se irou muito, e chamou todos os príncipes de Moabe, e os capitães de Amom, e todos os governadores do litoral,

2Wherewith he was very angry, and called all the princes of Moab, and the captains of Ammon, and all the governors of the sea coast,

3e lhes disse: Dizei-me agora, filhos de Canaã, quem é este povo que habita na região montanhosa, e quais são as cidades que habitam, e qual a multidão do seu exército, e em que está o seu poder e a sua força, e que rei está posto sobre eles, ou que general do seu exército;

3And he said unto them, Tell me now, ye sons of Chanaan, who this people is, that dwelleth in the hill country, and what are the cities that they inhabit, and what is the multitude of their army, and wherein is their power and strength, and what king is set over them, or captain of their army;

4e por que determinaram não vir ao meu encontro, mais do que todos os habitantes do ocidente?

4And why have they determined not to come and meet me, more than all the inhabitants of the west.

5Então Aquior, chefe de todos os filhos de Amom, disse: Ouça agora o meu senhor uma palavra da boca do teu servo, e eu te declararei a verdade acerca deste povo que habita perto de ti, na região montanhosa; e nenhuma mentira sairá da boca do teu servo.

5Then said Achior, the captain of all the sons of Ammon, Let my lord now hear a word from the mouth of thy servant, and I will declare unto thee the truth concerning this people, which dwelleth near thee, and inhabiteth the hill countries: and there shall no lie come out of the mouth of thy servant.

6Este povo descende dos caldeus.

6This people are descended of the Chaldeans:

7E habitaram antigamente na Mesopotâmia, porque não quiseram seguir os deuses de seus pais, que estavam na terra dos caldeus.

7And they sojourned heretofore in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers, which were in the land of Chaldea.

8Pois deixaram o caminho de seus antepassados e adoraram o Deus do céu, o Deus a quem conheceram; por isso os expulsaram da face dos seus deuses, e eles fugiram para a Mesopotâmia e ali habitaram muitos dias.

8For they left the way of their ancestors, and worshipped the God of heaven, the God whom they knew: so they cast them out from the face of their gods, and they fled into Mesopotamia, and sojourned there many days.

9Então o seu Deus lhes ordenou que saíssem do lugar onde habitavam e fossem para a terra de Canaã; ali habitaram e foram enriquecidos com ouro e prata e com muitíssimo gado.

9Then their God commanded them to depart from the place where they sojourned, and to go into the land of Chanaan: where they dwelt, and were increased with gold and silver, and with very much cattle.

10Mas, quando a fome cobriu toda a terra de Canaã, desceram ao Egito e ali habitaram, enquanto foram sustentados, e se tornaram ali uma grande multidão, de modo que não se podia contar a sua nação.

10But when a famine covered all the land of Chanaan, they went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, while they were nourished, and became there a great multitude, so that one could not number their nation.

11Por isso o rei do Egito se levantou contra eles, e os tratou com astúcia, e os oprimiu com o trabalho dos tijolos, e os fez escravos.

11Therefore the king of Egypt rose up against them, and dealt subtilly with them, and brought them low with labouring in brick, and made them slaves.

12Então clamaram ao seu Deus, e ele feriu toda a terra do Egito com pragas incuráveis; e assim os egípcios os expulsaram da sua presença.

12Then they cried unto their God, and he smote all the land of Egypt with incurable plagues: so the Egyptians cast them out of their sight.

13E Deus secou o mar Vermelho diante deles,

13And God dried the Red sea before them,

14e os conduziu ao monte Sinai e a Cades-Barneia, e expulsou todos os que habitavam no deserto.

14And brought them to mount Sina, and Cades-Barne, and cast forth all that dwelt in the wilderness.

15Assim habitaram na terra dos amorreus, e destruíram pela sua força todos os de Hesbom; e, passando o Jordão, possuíram toda a região montanhosa.

15So they dwelt in the land of the Amorites, and they destroyed by their strength all them of Esebon, and passing over Jordan they possessed all the hill country.

16E expulsaram diante de si o cananeu, o ferezeu, o jebuseu, e o siquemita, e todos os girgaseus, e habitaram naquela terra muitos dias.

16And they cast forth before them the Chanaanite, the Pherezite, the Jebusite, and the Sychemite, and all the Gergesites, and they dwelt in that country many days.

17E, enquanto não pecaram diante do seu Deus, prosperaram, porque o Deus que odeia a iniquidade estava com eles.

17And whilst they sinned not before their God, they prospered, because the God that hateth iniquity was with them.

18Mas, quando se desviaram do caminho que ele lhes designara, foram destruídos em muitas batalhas muito duras, e levados cativos para uma terra que não era sua, e o templo do seu Deus foi arrasado, e as suas cidades foram tomadas pelos inimigos.

18But when they departed from the way which he appointed them, they were destroyed in many battles very sore, and were led captives into a land that was not theirs, and the temple of their God was cast to the ground, and their cities were taken by the enemies.

19Mas agora voltaram para o seu Deus, e subiram dos lugares onde tinham sido dispersos, e possuíram Jerusalém, onde está o seu santuário, e se estabeleceram na região montanhosa, que estava desolada.

19But now are they returned to their God, and are come up from the places where they were scattered, and have possessed Jerusalem, where their sanctuary is, and are seated in the hill country; for it was desolate.

20Agora, pois, meu senhor e governador, se há algum erro neste povo, e pecam contra o seu Deus, consideremos que isto será a sua ruína, e subamos, e os venceremos.

20Now therefore, my lord and governor, if there be any error against this people, and they sin against their God, let us consider that this shall be their ruin, and let us go up, and we shall overcome them.

21Mas, se não há iniquidade na sua nação, passe agora o meu senhor ao largo, para que o seu Senhor não os defenda e o seu Deus não seja por eles, e nos tornemos um opróbrio diante de todo o mundo.

21But if there be no iniquity in their nation, let my lord now pass by, lest their Lord defend them, and their God be for them, and we become a reproach before all the world.

22E, quando Aquior terminou estas palavras, todo o povo que estava em redor da tenda murmurou; e os principais de Holofernes, e todos os que habitavam junto ao mar e em Moabe, disseram que o matassem.

22And when Achior had finished these sayings, all the people standing round about the tent murmured, and the chief men of Holofernes, and all that dwelt by the sea side, and in Moab, spake that he should kill him.

23Pois, diziam eles, não temeremos a face dos filhos de Israel; pois eis que é um povo que não tem força nem poder para uma batalha forte.

23For, say they, we will not be afraid of the face of the children of Israel: for, lo, it is a people that have no strength nor power for a strong battle.

24Agora, pois, senhor Holofernes, subiremos, e eles serão presa para ser devorada por todo o teu exército.

24Now therefore, lord Holofernes, we will go up, and they shall be a prey to be devoured of all thine army.
