Martírio de Policarpo 10

1Porém, insistindo o procônsul outra vez e dizendo: 'Jura pelo gênio de César', respondeu ele: 'Se vãs pretensões te iludem de que eu hei de jurar pelo gênio de César, como dizes, fingindo ignorar quem eu sou, ouve com toda a clareza: Eu sou cristão. Se desejas aprender a doutrina do cristianismo, designa um dia e escuta'.

1But on his persisting again and saying, 'Swear by the genius of Caesar,' he answered, 'If thou supposest vainly that I will swear by the genius of Caesar, as thou sayest, and feignest that thou art ignorant who I am, hear thou plainly, I am a Christian. But if thou wouldest learn the doctrine of Christianity, assign a day and give me a hearing.'

2Disse o procônsul: 'Persuade ao povo'. Policarpo respondeu: 'A ti considerei digno de prestar contas, pois fomos ensinados a dar às autoridades e potestades instituídas por Deus a honra que lhes é devida, desde que não nos traga dano; mas a este populacho não julgo digno de perante ele apresentar a minha defesa'.

2The proconsul said; 'Prevail upon the people.' But Polycarp said; 'As for thyself, I should have held thee worthy of discourse; for we have been taught to render, as is meet, to princes and authorities appointed by God such honor as does us no harm; but as for these, I do not hold them worthy, that I should defend myself before them.'
