Martírio de Policarpo 5

1Ora, o glorioso Policarpo, de início, ao ouvir tais coisas, longe de se perturbar, desejava permanecer na cidade; mas a maioria persuadiu-o a retirar-se. Ele retirou-se, pois, para uma pequena quinta não distante da cidade, e ali permanecia com uns poucos, noite e dia não fazendo outra coisa senão orar por todos os homens e pelas igrejas espalhadas por todo o orbe, como era seu costume constante.

1Now the glorious Polycarp at the first, when he heard it, so far from being dismayed, was desirous of remaining in town; but the greater part persuaded him to withdraw. So he withdrew to a farm not far distant from the city; and there he stayed with a few companions, doing nothing else night and day but praying for all men and for the churches throughout the world; for this was his constant habit.

2E, enquanto orava, entrou em êxtase três dias antes de ser preso; e viu o seu travesseiro ardendo em fogo. E voltando-se para os que com ele estavam, disse: 'Cumpre que eu seja queimado vivo'.

2And while praying he falleth into a trance three days before his apprehension; and he saw his pillow burning with fire. And he turned and said unto those that were with him: 'It must needs be that I shall be burned alive.'
