Mateus 3

1E naqueles dias veio João Batista, pregando no deserto da Judeia,

1In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2E dizendo: Arrependei-vos, porque perto está o Reino dos céus.

2And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

3Porque este é aquele que foi declarado pelo profeta Isaías, que disse: Voz do que clama no deserto: “Preparai o caminho do Senhor; endireitai suas veredas”.

3For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4Este João tinha sua roupa de pelos de camelo e um cinto de couro ao redor de sua cintura, e seu alimento era gafanhotos e mel silvestre.

4And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

5Então vinham até ele moradores de Jerusalém, de toda a Judeia, e de toda a região próxima do Jordão;

5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

6E eram por ele batizados no Jordão, confessando os seus pecados.

6And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

7Mas quando ele viu muitos dos fariseus e dos saduceus que vinham ao seu batismo, disse-lhes: Ninhada de víboras! Quem vos ensinou a fugir da ira futura?

7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8Dai, pois, frutos condizentes com o arrependimento.

8Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

9E não imagineis, dizendo em vós mesmos: “Temos por pai a Abraão”, porque eu vos digo que até destas pedras Deus pode fazer surgir filhos a Abraão.

9And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

10E agora mesmoo machado está posto à raiz das árvores; portanto toda árvore que não dá bom fruto é cortada e lançada ao fogo.

10And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

11Realmente eu vos batizo com água para arrependimento, mas aquele que vem após mim é mais poderoso do que eu; suas sandálias não sou digno de levar. Ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo.

11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

12Ele tem sua pá na mão; limpará sua eira, e recolherá seu trigo no celeiro; mas queimará a palha com fogo que nunca se apaga.

12Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

13Então Jesus veio da Galileia ao Jordão até João para ser por ele batizado.

13Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

14Mas João lhe impedia, dizendo: Eu preciso ser batizado por ti, e tu vens a mim?

14But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15Porém Jesus lhe respondeu: Permite por agora, porque assim nos convém cumprir toda a justiça. Então ele o permitiu.

15And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

16E tendo Jesus sido batizado, subiu logo da água. E eis que os céus se lhe abriram, e ele viu o Espírito de Deus descendo como uma pomba, vindo sobre ele.

16And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17E eis uma voz dos céus, dizendo: Este é o meu Filho amado, em quem me agrado.

17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
