1A bendita e gloriosa sempre virgem Maria, procedente da estirpe real e da família de Davi, nascida na cidade de Nazaré, foi criada em Jerusalém, no templo do Senhor.
1The blessed and glorious ever-virgin Mary, sprung from the royal stock and family of David, born in the city of Nazareth, was brought up at Jerusalem in the temple of the Lord.
2Seu pai se chamava Joaquim, e sua mãe, Ana.
2Her father was named Joachim, and her mother Anna.
3A casa de seu pai era da Galileia e da cidade de Nazaré, mas a família de sua mãe era de Belém.
3Her father’s house was from Galilee and the city of Nazareth, but her mother’s family from Bethlehem.
4A vida deles era íntegra e reta diante do Senhor, e irrepreensível e piedosa diante dos homens.
4Their life was guileless and right before the Lord, and irreproachable and pious before men.
5Pois dividiam todos os seus bens em três partes.
5For they divided all their substance into three parts.
6Uma parte dedicavam ao templo e aos servos do templo; outra distribuíam aos peregrinos e aos pobres; a terceira reservavam para si e para as necessidades de sua família.
6One part they spent upon the temple and the temple servants; another they distributed to strangers and the poor; the third they reserved, for themselves and the necessities of their family.
7Assim, amados de Deus e benévolos para com os homens, viveram por cerca de vinte anos em sua própria casa, numa casta vida conjugal, sem terem filhos.
7Thus, dear to God, kind to men, for about twenty years they lived in their own house, a chaste married life, without having any children.
8Todavia, fizeram o voto de que, se o Senhor lhes concedesse descendência, a consagrariam ao serviço do Senhor; razão pela qual costumavam visitar o templo do Senhor em cada uma das festas ao longo do ano.
8Nevertheless they vowed that, should the Lord happen to give them offspring, they would deliver it to the service of the Lord; on which account also they used to visit the temple of the Lord at each of the feasts during the year.
