Natividade de Maria 3

1Ora, estando ele ali havia já algum tempo, em certo dia em que se achava a sós, um anjo do Senhor pôs-se junto dele em grande resplendor.

1Now, when he had been there for some time, on a certain day when he was alone, an angel of the Lord stood by him in a great light.

2E, estando ele perturbado com a sua aparição, o anjo que lhe surgira acalmou o seu temor, dizendo: Não temas, Joaquim, nem te perturbes com a minha visão; pois eu sou o anjo do Senhor, enviado por Ele para te anunciar que as tuas orações foram ouvidas, e que as tuas esmolas subiram à Sua presença.

2And when he was disturbed at his appearance, the angel who had appeared to him restrained his fear, saying: Fear not, Joachim, nor be disturbed by my appearance; for I am the angel of the Lord, sent by Him to thee to tell thee that thy prayers have been heard, and that thy charitable deeds have gone up into His presence.

3Porque Ele contemplou a tua vergonha e ouviu a afronta da esterilidade que injustamente te foi lançada.

3For He hath seen thy shame, and hath heard the reproach of unfruitfulness which has been unjustly brought against thee.

4Pois Deus é vingador do pecado, não da natureza; e, por isso, quando cerra o ventre de alguém, Ele o faz para depois abri-lo miraculosamente, a fim de que se reconheça que o que nasce não provém da concupiscência, mas do dom de Deus.

4For God is the avenger of sin, not of nature: and, therefore, when He shuts up the womb of any one, He does so that He may miraculously open it again; so that that which is born may be acknowledged to be not of lust, but of the gift of God.

5Porventura não foi assim que Sara, a primeira mãe da vossa nação, foi estéril até ao seu octogésimo ano?

5For was it not the case that the first mother of your nation—Sarah—was barren up to her eightieth year?

6E, no entanto, na velhice avançada deu à luz Isaque, a quem foi renovada a promessa da bênção de todas as nações.

6And, nevertheless, in extreme old age she brought forth Isaac, to whom the promise was renewed of the blessing of all nations.

7Também Raquel, tão favorecida pelo Senhor e tão amada pelo santo Jacó, foi estéril por longo tempo; e, todavia, deu à luz José, que se tornou não somente governador do Egito, mas o libertador de muitas nações que estavam a ponto de perecer de fome.

7Rachel also, so favoured of the Lord, and so beloved by holy Jacob, was long barren; and yet she brought forth Joseph, who was not only the lord of Egypt, but the deliverer of many nations who were ready to perish of hunger.

8Quem dentre os juízes foi mais forte do que Sansão, ou mais santo do que Samuel?

8Who among the judges was either stronger than Samson, or more holy than Samuel?

9E, contudo, as mães de ambos eram estéreis.

9And yet the mothers of both were barren.

10Se, portanto, a razão das minhas palavras não te convence, crê pelo menos nos fatos, pois as concepções tardias e os partos de mulheres que foram estéreis costumam ser acompanhados de prodígios admiráveis.

10If, therefore, the reasonableness of my words does not persuade thee, believe in fact that conceptions very late in life, and births in the case of women that have been barren, are usually attended with something wonderful.

11Portanto, a tua mulher Ana te dará à luz uma filha, e lhe chamarás pelo nome de Maria; ela será, conforme prometestes em voto, consagrada ao Senhor desde a sua infância, e será cheia do Espírito Santo desde o ventre materno.

11Accordingly thy wife Anna will bring forth a daughter to thee, and thou shalt call her name Mary: she shall be, as you have vowed, consecrated to the Lord from her infancy, and she shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from her mother’s womb.

12Ela não comerá nem beberá coisa alguma impura, nem passará a sua vida no meio das multidões do povo cá fora, mas no templo do Senhor, para que não seja possível falar, nem sequer suspeitar, mal algum a seu respeito.

12She shall neither eat nor drink any unclean thing, nor shall she spend her life among the crowds of the people without, but in the temple of the Lord, that it may not be possible either to say, or so much as to suspect, any evil concerning her.

13Portanto, quando for crescida, assim como ela própria nascerá milagrosamente de uma mulher estéril, assim também de modo incomparável ela, sendo virgem, dará à luz o Filho do Altíssimo, que será chamado Jesus, e que, segundo o significado do Seu nome, será o Salvador de todas as nações.

13Therefore, when she has grown up, just as she herself shall be miraculously born of a barren woman, so in an incomparable manner she, a virgin, shall bring forth the Son of the Most High, who shall be called Jesus, and who, according to the etymology of His name, shall be the Saviour of all nations.

14E este te será o sinal destas coisas que te anuncio: quando chegares à Porta Dourada em Jerusalém, encontrarás ali a tua mulher Ana, que, ultimamente aflita pela demora de teu regresso, se alegrará então ao ver-te.

14And this shall be the sign to thee of those things which I announce: When thou shalt come to the Golden gate in Jerusalem, thou shalt there meet Anna thy wife, who, lately anxious from the delay of thy return, will then rejoice at the sight of thee.

15Tendo falado assim, o anjo retirou-se dele.

15Having thus spoken, the angel departed from him.
