Fragmentos de Papias e Quadrato 6

1E o presbítero disse isto: Marcos, tendo-se tornado intérprete de Pedro, escreveu com exatidão tudo o que recordava. Não foi, contudo, em ordem exata que relatou os ditos ou feitos de Cristo. Pois ele nem ouviu o Senhor nem O acompanhou. Mas depois, como eu disse, acompanhou Pedro, que adaptava as suas instruções às necessidades dos seus ouvintes, porém sem intenção de fornecer uma narrativa regular dos ditos do Senhor.

1And the presbyter said this: Mark having become the interpreter of Peter, wrote down accurately whatsoever he remembered. It was not, however, in exact order that he related the sayings or deeds of Christ. For he neither heard the Lord nor accompanied Him. But afterwards, as I said, he accompanied Peter, who accommodated his instructions to the necessities [of his hearers], but with no intention of giving a regular narrative of the Lord’s sayings.

2Pelo que Marcos não cometeu erro algum ao escrever assim algumas coisas como delas se lembrava. Pois de uma coisa teve cuidado especial: não omitir nada do que ouvira, e não inserir nada de fictício nos relatos. Isto é o que foi relatado por Papias a respeito de Marcos;

2Wherefore Mark made no mistake in thus writing some things as he remembered them. For of one thing he took especial care, not to omit anything he had heard, and not to put anything fictitious into the statements. [This is what is related by Papias regarding Mark;

3mas quanto a Mateus, fez as seguintes declarações: Mateus reuniu os oráculos do Senhor na língua hebraica, e cada um os interpretou da melhor maneira que pôde.

3but with regard to Matthew he has made the following statements]: Matthew put together the oracles [of the Lord] in the Hebrew language, and each one interpreted them as best he could.
