Pastor de Hermas 36

1“Ouve agora,” disse ele, “a respeito da fé. Há dois anjos com o homem: um de justiça e outro de iniquidade.” E eu lhe disse: “Como, senhor, hei de conhecer os poderes destes, pois ambos os anjos habitam comigo?” “Ouve,” disse ele, “e compreende-os. O anjo da justiça é gentil e modesto, manso e pacífico. Quando, portanto, sobe ao teu coração, imediatamente te fala de justiça, pureza, castidade, contentamento e de toda ação justa e virtude gloriosa.

1“Hear now,” said he, “in regard to faith. There are two angels with a man—one of righteousness, and the other of iniquity.” And I said to him, “How, sir, am I to know the powers of these, for both angels dwell with me?” “Hear,” said he, “and understand them. The angel of righteousness is gentle and modest, meek and peaceful. When, therefore, he ascends into your heart, forthwith he talks to you of righteousness, purity, chastity, contentment, and of every righteous deed and glorious virtue.

2Quando todas estas coisas sobem ao teu coração, sabe que o anjo da justiça está contigo. Estas são as obras do anjo da justiça. Confia, pois, nele e nas suas obras. Olha agora as obras do anjo da iniquidade. Primeiro, é irado, amargo e tolo, e as suas obras são más e arruínam os servos de Deus. Quando, pois, sobe ao teu coração, conhece-o pelas suas obras.” E eu lhe disse: “Como, senhor, hei de percebê-lo, não sei.” “Ouve e compreende,” disse ele.

2When all these ascend into your heart, know that the angel of righteousness is with you. These are the deeds of the angel of righteousness. Trust him, then, and his works. Look now at the works of the angel of iniquity. First, he is wrathful, and bitter, and foolish, and his works are evil, and ruin the servants of God. When, then, he ascends into your heart, know him by his works.” And I said to him, “How, sir, I shall perceive him, I do not know.” “Hear and understand,” said he.

3“Quando a ira vier sobre ti, ou a aspereza, sabe que ele está em ti; e saberás que é assim também quando fores atacado por um anseio de muitos negócios, e das mais ricas iguarias, e de orgias de embriaguez, e de vários luxos, e de coisas impróprias, e por um desejo ardente de mulheres, e por ganância, e orgulho, e arrogância, e por tudo o que se assemelha a estas coisas. Quando estas sobem ao teu coração, sabe que o anjo da iniquidade está em ti.

3“When anger comes upon you, or harshness, know that he is in you; and you will know this to be the case also, when you are attacked by a longing after many transactions, and the richest delicacies, and drunken revels, and divers luxuries, and things improper, and by a hankering after women, and by overreaching, and pride, and blustering, and by whatever is like to these. When these ascend into your heart, know that the angel of iniquity is in you.

4Agora que conheces as suas obras, afasta-te dele e em nenhum aspecto confies nele, porque as suas ações são más e inúteis para os servos de Deus. Estas, pois, são as ações de ambos os anjos. Compreende-as e confia no anjo da justiça; mas afasta-te do anjo da iniquidade, porque a sua instrução é má em toda ação. Pois ainda que um homem seja fidelíssimo, se o pensamento deste anjo sobe ao seu coração, esse homem ou mulher deve pecar.

4Now that you know his works, depart from him, and in no respect trust him, because his deeds are evil, and unprofitable to the servants of God. These, then, are the actions of both angels. Understand them, and trust the angel of righteousness; but depart from the angel of iniquity, because his instruction is bad in every deed. For though a man be most faithful, and the thought of this angel ascend into his heart, that man or woman must sin.

5Por outro lado, por pior que seja um homem ou mulher, se as obras do anjo da justiça sobem ao seu coração, ele ou ela deve fazer algo de bom. Vês, portanto, que é bom seguir o anjo da justiça, mas despedir-se do anjo da iniquidade.

5On the other hand, be a man or woman ever so bad, yet, if the works of the angel of righteousness ascend into his or her heart, he or she must do something good. You see, therefore, that it is good to follow the angel of righteousness, but to bid farewell to the angel of iniquity.

6“Este mandamento exibe as obras da fé, para que confies nas obras do anjo da justiça e, fazendo-as, vivas para Deus. Mas crê que as obras do anjo da iniquidade são duras. Se recusares fazê-las, viverás para Deus.”

6“This commandment exhibits the deeds of faith, that you may trust the works of the angel of righteousness, and doing them you may live to God. But believe that the works of the angel of iniquity are hard. If you refuse to do them, you will live to God.”
