Pastor de Hermas 47

1Estas coisas me disse em tons da mais profunda ira, de modo que fiquei confuso e extremamente temeroso dele, pois a sua figura se alterou de tal modo que um homem não poderia suportar a sua ira.

1These things he said to me in tones of the deepest anger, so that I was confounded and exceedingly afraid of him, for his figure was altered so that a man could not endure his anger.

2Mas, vendo-me totalmente agitado e confuso, começou a falar-me em tons mais suaves; e disse: “Ó tolo, insensato e duvidoso, não percebes quão grande é a glória de Deus, e quão forte e maravilhosa, pois criou o mundo por causa do homem, e sujeitou a ele toda a criação, e lhe deu poder para governar tudo o que há debaixo do céu? Se, pois, o homem é senhor das criaturas de Deus e governa sobre todas, não é ele capaz de ser também senhor destes mandamentos? Pois,” diz ele, “o homem que tem o Senhor no seu coração pode também ser senhor de tudo e de cada um destes mandamentos.

2But seeing me altogether agitated and confused, he began to speak to me in more gentle tones; and he said: “O fool, senseless and doubting, do you not perceive how great is the glory of God, and how strong and marvellous, in that He created the world for the sake of man, and subjected all creation to him, and gave him power to rule over everything under heaven? If, then, man is lord of the creatures of God, and rules over all, is he not able to be lord also of these commandments? For,” says he, “the man who has the Lord in his heart can also be lord of all, and of every one of these commandments.

3Mas para os que têm o Senhor apenas nos lábios, e o coração endurecido, e estão longe do Senhor, os mandamentos são duros e difíceis. Ponde, pois, vós que sois vazios e volúveis na vossa fé, o Senhor no vosso coração, e sabereis que nada há mais fácil, ou mais doce, ou mais manejável do que estes mandamentos.

3But to those who have the Lord only on their lips, but their hearts hardened, and who are far from the Lord, the commandments are hard and difficult. Put, therefore, ye who are empty and fickle in your faith, the Lord in your heart, and ye will know that there is nothing easier, or sweeter, or more manageable, than these commandments.

4Voltai, vós que andais nos mandamentos do diabo, em dura, amarga e selvagem libertinagem, e não temais o diabo; pois não há nele poder contra vós, pois estarei convosco, eu, o anjo do arrependimento, que sou senhor sobre ele. O diabo só tem medo, mas o seu medo não tem força. Não o temais, pois, e ele fugirá de vós.”

4Return, ye who walk in the commandments of the devil, in hard, and bitter, and wild licentiousness, and fear not the devil; for there is no power in him against you, for I will be with you, the angel of repentance, who am lord over him. The devil has fear only, but his fear has no strength. Fear him not, then, and he will flee from you.”
